      I would like a solid mobile kit for doing portraits outside with kids. We go to a bunch of parks and historic areas, and I have been trying to find the smallest, easiest kit, that gives good fill lighting while properly exposing the background, that I want in the photo in the first place. Small enough to be easy, but strong enough to work outside...is the tough part. Side note, I feel like the battery didn't need to upgrade, I feel like the battery in the ii was so good.

    • @Reggiebphoto
      @Reggiebphoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me personally the battery sucked for wedding photography. It constantly overheated and now that problem is resolved.

      @@Reggiebphoto I belive that, I'd don't do weddings, so that makes sense.
      Edit, I do mostly portraits if I'm doing flash, and in that context, I've never had an issue. I do image that in a wedding it gets thumped on more.

    6:28 - just wanna say this sold it for me. Despite me being a Sony user your video was the only one that I’ve seen so far to actually show how the shape of the beam is different on a blank surface rather than always on a person / subject. I saw that Magmod2 is out for V1 users at the same price - initially like your video at the time of it posted, the fact that magmod didn’t have accessories for V1 made me lean to the 680iii.
    Thank you for your awesome comparison video, I really liked it and helped me a lot 🥰

    The v860iii has the modeling light shooting straight on, because it’s better for low light events to assist the camera in attaining focus quickly, giving the photographer the ability to still bounce the light. The v1 can’t do that unless you point the flash directly at the subject.
    That’s why the 860iii is the perfect low light event flash!!!

    • @Reggiebphoto
      @Reggiebphoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That isn’t a modeling light then. It’s an af assist light

    It's much better that the "modeling lamp" is facing forward. This way if your mirrorless camera can't focus due to super dark lighting conditions you can turn that on so the camera can lock focus. If you're bouncing the flash and the light was on the head then it wouldn't work as a good focus assist beam.

    • @Reggiebphoto
      @Reggiebphoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      that would be an af assist lamp, not a modeling lamo. all I'm trying to say is let's define the actual function of the light to be accurate to what it is designed for.

      @BryanKeithPhoto ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Reggiebphoto he's right. That's what this modeling lamp is for. Mirrorless cameras can't see the AF assist beam, so they implemented the LED modeling lamp.

    • @michelmonney
      @michelmonney ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you are right. I don't see it as a modeling lamp at all. It's to assist while focusing. If it were intended as a modeling lamp it would be located as close as possible to the flash tube. Also it would have to follow the illumination angle. Useless otherwise. Just my opinion ion of course.

  • @spiroszaharakis2648
    @spiroszaharakis2648 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think it's a mistake that Godox advertises that light as a modeling light. It should be just called a video light for hybrid users. That way if you happen to shoot both photos and videos you can have one unit on the camera for both purposes. I find the "modeling" light "advantage" of being on the flash head on the V1 useless as such because it is pretty weak to make any difference once you point it away from the subject. Again, it only makes sense if it is used as a video light.

    Remembering what is what letter and then trying to get them all to a decent exposure.
    In events many times I only get one shot at important moments.. And sometimes just one flash gets complicated because of cealing variations, or ambient colors, etc...
    I can imagine using them so increase the over all ambient lighting and not having to bump up my ISO to balance the lighting in the entire room.

    wow, o k so I disagree on the placement of the modelling light on the V860iii. For a canon shooter, its perfect for low light situations where the new mirrorless system, doesn't allow AF assist beams from Speedlight's, so in dark clubs etc, this is so handy for assisting in focusing. I don't use direct flash, so putting the lamp inside the flash from facing doesn't work, having it below means whether you front face or bounce the flash, you have the lamp there on the lower end of the body if you need it. I've had to use torches to assist with focusing, thats how bad the R6ii is in low light.

    The Godox V860iii is not compatible with the settings of in camera body flash control available with newer Sony camera like A7IV, A7RV. The settings called “external flash settings “ under flash settings in these cameras is greyed out when V860iii is attached on hot shoe or connected as off camera flash. Can a firmware update to V860iii be a solution to make it compatible with a very useful function within camera body to use the Godox flash to its fullest potential like the Sony Flashes? Hi Reggie. I often get a clear light shadow bar on each and every picture depending on what side I use on my Godox V860iii. It fails to give a full light spread, like a straight vingette but on one side only. I have used 1/1 full flash in manual mode and I use 50 zoom mode with of my 50 mm lens. Latest photos with this issue had a shutter speed of 80 and f.4.0, iso 400 on a canon 5dsr, so clearly not a sync problem. Could it be resolved with a firm ware update?

    Thanks for such a useful video, Reggie. I ended up going with the v860iii. So far it has been working well for me. The only thing I don’t understand is why I can’t enable the manual flash mode in-camera (I use the X-T3). On the flash’s screen, it does say “M” and I’m able to control the exposure settings. However on my camera screen it stays at TTL and whenever I try to change it to M in the settings, the M is just greyed out. Do you know what is causing this and how to fix it? I’ve tried googling for a solution but it doesn’t seem to be a common issue. Thanks Reggie.

  • @I0nut09

    I will explain why the modeling light is better placed on the v860iii. You wondered and couldn't explain it to yourself. If you shoot it towards the ceiling, then the modeling light on v1 is useless. If the flash head is not pointed at the model then why would you need the modeling light? Most of them pull it upwards and use diffusion, then again it makes no sense to put it on the head. You shoot the flash directly at the model, is that how you always shoot?

    • @Reggiebphoto
      @Reggiebphoto  หลายเดือนก่อน

      A modeling light is supposed to “model” and simulate the expected flash output.
      Call it a flash light then or some other name.
