He was ambitious (Shooting for the stars) so he pursued fame and fortune. After accomplishing his goals, he realizes that material rewards aren't as important as he once thought. He misses his life on the farm and all of its simple beauties. He later says "Turn me back into that wild haired gale," and "Turn these diamonds straight back into coal," meaning he would trade it all to go back in time and be that boy on the farm again. At least that's how I see it!
For someone who has only experienced this earth for 40 years this guy taps into a vibration as old as the concept of time itself. This could be played anywhere on the planet and resonate with anyone who hears it. It is equally tranquil and a little painful combined with a fragile sense of hope. Truly beautiful.
What does that mean? Im kinda assuming that by tin man he means like a homeless man? Like I ached for my heart like some homeless man? Cause if thats it then it does surely hurt.. cant even imagine the life a homeless man is going through
This song played in a beach restaurant when I was with my wife and I remember everything it was so beautiful. We got pregnant soon after and now I want to learn guitar so I can sing this to my baby girl. She was two days old and crying and she listened to me sing the whole thing despite my happy tears. Great song.
Love it. Learn c,g,f,a minor chord then you can play basically any song including this one. Don't overthink it these songs are simple it's the heart that makes them great.
You know that feeling when you have been inside all day and as you walk outside and feel the warmth of the sun and the cool breeze across your face, that’s how this song makes me feel.
Zach Byrd Adventure Hour this is the song and the version that got me. Pretty much he's got a couple masterpieces - suitcase full of sparks this sessions comes to mind.wish I could have been the guy filming
I agree. This song is in league with Amazing Grace. It's a hymn of the universe. a divine invention that Gregory was somehow able to hear and capture to lift all of us.
remember when our songs were just like prayers. like gospel hymns that you called in the air. come down come down sweet reverence, unto my simple house and ring… and ring. ring like silver, ring like gold ring out those ghosts on the ohio ring like clear day wedding bells were we the belly of the beast or the sword that fell…we’ll never tell. come to me clear and cold on some sea watch the world spinning waves…like some machine now i’ve been crazy couldn’t you tell i threw stones at the stars, but the whole sky fell now i’m covered up in straw, belly up on the table well i drank and sang, and passed in the stable. that tall grass grows high and brown, well i dragged you straight in the muddy ground and you sent me back to where i roam well i cursed and i cried, but now i know…now i know and i ran back to that hollow again the moon was just a sliver back then and i ached for my heart like some tin man when it came oh it beat and it boiled and it rang…it’s ringing ring like crazy, ring like hell turn me back into that wild haired gale ring like silver, ring like gold turn these diamonds straight back into coal.
There are so many profound lines in the lyrics that have obviously gripped so many people. I think for me one of them is "Ring crazy, ring like hell. Turn me back into that wild-haired gale." 4:58. There's something so immensely nostalgic about the line. Plus the way he altered the melody on this particular line was so painfully good.
The banjo lines made me perk my ears while waiting for my cappuccino in a coffee shop a few minutes ago. I asked the barista what was playing. Looks like I discovered some great, new-to-me artists. Playing a banjo tastefully and sparsely is very difficult, not many can (or want to) do it. I'm also happy to hear that the folks in my old home (Germany) are finally catching on to this kind of music. When I still lived there, nobody knew what Americana is nor wanted anything to do with it....
I am so glad I discovered this beautiful man and his music. This song is probably one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. The version with the “Colorado symphony” is the best version of this song for me.
I first listened to this song in high school over a decade ago (I think Gregory still lives in my home town), one of the first songs I bought. Heard the Colorado Symphony version just recently. Loved it. Hey if you like Gregory you should check out "Chris and Thomas", they are very obscure but give off a similar but unique style to Gregory.
Mine too!!! I heard it on Pandora and I had to look up the song and then the artist and I just fell in love with his music... And I never look up artist from Pandora!
Same here. Not sure where I heard it but I can’t explain how happy I am that I did. When people talk about music from the 60’s and 70’s and how many good artists there were back then, I wish I could show them all this guy as living proof that there are musicians who are just as good if not better. The issue is humans got too stupid and lazy to appreciate it.
This has consistently remained the most moving song I've heard in my entire life ever since I discovered it 7 years ago and I don't see that changing until the day I die.
There's no specific meaning, but Gregory has said that the song is simply "about everything." The meaning is whatever you interpret it to be, which in a song is rare. It's beautiful.
Dream of my lifetime was being at his concert with my daughter at Red Rocks in August '19 - Pre COVID days. I've lived long enough to easier attend 100 concerts and this was definitely one of the best of my lifetime. Had tickets to see him again with the Lumineers last summer ('20 COVID summer); hoping I live long enough to cash those tickets next summer. Whenever live music safely returns, his will be the first ticket I buy. The best poet of this generation.
This song is one of my favorites of all time and a big fan of Gregory Alan Isakov.... something about the guitar strum opening and one of the most poetic and beautiful stanzas ever written... "Remember when our songs were just like prayers. Like gospel hymns that called up in the air. Come down, come down sweet reverence. Unto my simple house and ring. And ring."
Gregory is brilliant... Steve Varney comes along and adds the icing to this particular cake. Sweet, evocative and timeless banjo artistry. It's like both being transported back in time, and forward to something even better. This is brilliance, it is just, magnificence - a modern classic. I want to say more but that's just wasted effort. This work shines.
Carolina Theater in Durham last night. It was one heck of a show. The venue was great, acoustics perfect, and he was so relaxed. This guy's horticulture background shows in all of his lyrics. He's inspiring things on my farm and my soul is better because of this man's music. He in 2016 is what Jackson Browne was to me in my teens and into my twenties.

I don't know what it is about this song but I just can't seem to kill it. I've been listening to it for several years now and it still radiates my soul. I go to sleep to this song. It calms my day. I've seen them in concert several years ago in Atlanta and they were great. He's so nice as we had the chance to chat and take pictures with them. By far one of the best songwriters of our time. Great video btw. The color of the fall is the best color and this song definite compliments the video. One of the best video from Cardinal Sessions.
There are tons of beautiful artists on Cardinal Sessions, yet this session truly makes me nostalgic the most. I find this live performance so melancholic and deep, played with the heart, genuinely.
I love that it's singing, in a park, somewhere? Could be anytime, in history. A covered wagon, or a campfire song, right now, in the woods. Just instrument's & the talented artists, music. Time traveling music. ❤
I can't believe I only found this song today. beautiful. Saw him in Feb 2022 in Glasgow supporting the Lumineers and since then, been meaning to listen to more of his songs. This is brill.
+Thomas Mallon i think the lyric is "Ache for my heart like some tin man." i think it is referencing the tin man from the wizard of oz because he wanted a heart. I could be wrong though.
This video is probably the most human and personal music video I've ever watched. Two men, a guitar, and a banjo, playing an amazing song in a park surrounded by people just going about their daily lives. It's grounded, peaceful, and utterly beautiful ❤️
Gregory I where have you been all my life. Your songs and music so soothing to the soul. God bless you young man may he keep you on your path. I'm late husband could sing he had a beautiful voice he would have loved you. I sent your video to my daughter she can sing and plays guitar little bit she also has a beautiful voice. It has a lot of lack of confidence. I think a lot of singers seem to have that my husband was really good but he didn't believe in himself. I hope you keep making soul searching Soul soothing songs they are wonderful
I cannot stop listening to this version. It’s beyond beautiful. To me this song is about him breaking up & moving on even though it hurt . Which is exactly what I’m going through right now. I love this! It helps sooo much! Music is my life! ❤️
Remember when our songs where just like prayers. Like gospel hymns that you called in the air. Come down come down sweet reverence, Unto my simple house and ring And ring. Turn these diamonds straight back into coal.
This is a wonderful song. I've listened to many versions on You Tube, but like this one the best. The banjo is crisp and the tempo just right, to me. The lyrics are mysterious, but if broken into smaller parts all feel familiar. Especially the lyrics "Now I’ve been crazy couldn’t you tell. I threw stones at the stars, but the whole sky fell. Now I’m covered up in straw, belly up on the table. Well and sang and drank, and passed in the stable " I'm not sure if the person in the song passed out or died on the table, but I interpret it my own way. I believe this "vagueness" and "disconnectedness" is deliberate and intended. Gregory's song writing style reminds me of my past. Hardly a song writer, but very much a single traveler, I can still feel "Distance" and "Transient" in his songs, and it reminds me of what I'd experienced. Thank you for posting this song, and to Gregory for writing this beautiful song!

Played this song for a dear friend while camping a few weeks before he unexpectedly passed. He said "that's a mighty pleasant song"....I agree.
Ron P wow rip to your friend
Sorry for your loss....I hope you keep his memory alive, and I hope you keep camping
You could play this on my death bed and I’d be cool with it. Though I’d want to toss in my mando licks lol
Sorry about your friend...fine song to choose for him
So sorry for your loss. That is terrible news😥😥

"Remember when our songs were just like prayers" Great stuff. Shout out to Steve Varney the banjo player.
Yeah that banjo just adds so much character in Gregory’s songs.
Hats off to the amazing vocal harmonies from him too.
The man can sing and that banjo has great tone.
"And I ached for my heart like some tin man." Powerful stuff.
this
+S Wilson I sing that line to myself because I swear it's me he's talking about..

Love it. Learn c,g,f,a minor chord then you can play basically any song including this one. Don't overthink it these songs are simple it's the heart that makes them great.
I have been singing this song around the house so much I caught my 6 year old son singing..."Ring like silver ring like gold".

Damn. I love this song. It hurts me in that inarticulable way that good art does.
Oh it damn sure hurts. It's supposed to.
How is it that people are just walking by and not even noticing this beauty?
Some people see no value in music....shame...I'd hate to see what they value if not this...

I love that banjo.

Has anyone else cried every single time you listen or am I the only one?
The banjo player steals the show, Steve Varney kills it, even on the harmonies when he's asked to. The most memorable parts of the song belong to him.
The other singer gives him the stage….
There are so many profound lines in the lyrics that have obviously gripped so many people. I think for me one of them is "Ring crazy, ring like hell. Turn me back into that wild-haired gale." 4:58. "I threw stones at the stars but the whole sky fell" What a BRILLIANT line. OMG. Fantastic tune. love it.
I love Gregory but I want to give love to the Banjo player. Watching him play slow banjo to his own voice and Gregorys was beautiful.
I can listen to Gregory under any circumstance. He brings me constant deliverance.

play that FUKN BANJO STEVE!
I've been waiting years to yell this to him at a concert. Last night I succeeded.
What IS IT about this song? I keep wanting to hear it over and over.
There's no specific meaning, but Gregory has said that the song is simply "about everything." The meaning is whatever you interpret it to be, which in a song is rare. It's beautiful.
It’s a beautiful chord progression
To me it's about losing your heart or your faith and then finding it once again.
i know, right? I never get sick of it
It’s the banjo that puts it over the top.
Sometimes you listen to a song for the first time and then wonder how it could be that you didn't know it before.

The Stable Song - by Gregory Alan Isakov
Remember when our songs were just like prayers
Like gospel hymns that you called in the air
Come down, come down sweet reverence
Unto my simple house and ring
And ring
Ring like silver, ring like gold
Ring out those ghosts on the Ohio
Ring like clear day wedding bells
Were we the belly of the beast or the sword that fell
We'll never tell
Come to me clear and cold on some sea
Watch the world spinning waves, like that machine
Now I've been crazy couldn't you tell
I threw stones at the stars, but the whole sky fell
Now I'm covered up in straw, belly up on the table
Well I drank and sang, and passed in the stable
That tall grass grows high and brown
Well I dragged you straight in the muddy ground
And you sent me back to where I roam
Well I cursed and I cried, but now I know
Now I know
And I ran back to that hollow again
The moon was just a sliver back then
And I ached for my heart like some tin man
When it came oh it beat and it boiled and it rang
Oh it's ringing
Ring like crazy, ring like hell
Turn me back into that wild haired gale
Ring like silver, ring like gold
Turn these diamonds straight back into coal
"Turn these diamonds straight back into coal"
I dunno why it's gripping me this hard, but this line breaks me ...
Words cannot describe how this song makes me feel. This is a masterpiece!

I find this live performance so melancholic and deep, played with the heart, genuinely.
He is soooooooo handsome.
They*** are so handsome. 😍
7 years later and I still come back to this song for comfort
Loving the vintage Gibson. Love the simple attire. This is a simple man with beautiful talent.
I love that it's singing, in a park, somewhere? Could be anytime, in history. A covered wagon, or a campfire song, right now, in the woods. Just instrument's & the talented artists, music. Time traveling music. ❤
I love that banjo player
beautiful song by a beautiful artist. thank technology and Pandora Internet Radio for sending me this beautiful song!
I motioned what you just said.
I can't believe I only found this song today. beautiful. Saw him in Feb 2022 in Glasgow supporting the Lumineers and since then, been meaning to listen to more of his songs. This is brill.
Always amazes me that curious people just pass by instead of listening at a respectful distance.
"Ache from my heart like a suntanned man." I feel that so deeply.
+Thomas Mallon i think the lyric is "Ache for my heart like some tin man." i think it is referencing the tin man from the wizard of oz because he wanted a heart. I could be wrong though.
i´m from colombia, and i love indie, i´m wanna live in USA or in Canada only for this music
I love this song. The more I listen to it the more I fall in love with it. And the Banjo player... haha haaa *sigh* ;)
This video is probably the most human and personal music video I've ever watched. Two men, a guitar, and a banjo, playing an amazing song in a park surrounded by people just going about their daily lives. It's grounded, peaceful, and utterly beautiful ❤️
This is the song that got me hooked like a son a.......
I hope you keep making soul searching Soul soothing songs they are wonderful
there are songs that are so powerful that have the power to represent a whole era of your life. this is one of them.
You always come back...
this song makes me very happy and also very sad. This song is so beautiful.
I cannot stop listening to this version. It’s beyond beautiful. To me this song is about him breaking up & moving on even though it hurt . Which is exactly what I’m going through right now. I love this! It helps sooo much! Music is my life! ❤️
Beautiful
The time of 3.00 is when Steve varney become God.and I'm an oul fella of 60.pure genius.
Remember when our songs where just like prayers.
Like gospel hymns that you called in the air.
Come down come down sweet reverence,
Unto my simple house and ring
And ring.
Ring like silver, ring like gold
Ring out those ghosts on the Ohio
Ring like clear day wedding bells
Were we the belly of the beast or the sword that fell
We'll never tell.
Come to me clear and cold on some sea
Watch the world spinning waves like machine
Now I've been crazy couldn't you tell
I threw stones at the stars, but the whole sky fell
Now I'm covered up in straw, belly up on the table
Well I drank and sang, and passed in the stable.
That tall grass grows high and brown,
Well I dragged you straight in the muddy ground
And you sent me back to where I roam
Well I cursed and I cried, but now I know
Now I know
And I ran back to that hollow again
The moon was just a sliver back then
And I ached for my heart like some tin man
When it came oh it beat and it boiled and it rang
Oh it's ringing
Ring like crazy, ring like hell
Turn me back into that wild haired gale
Ring like silver, ring like gold
Turn these diamonds straight back into coal.
Turn these diamonds straight back into coal.
Its been said so many times, but these lyrics in the stable song blow my mind, i dont know what it is about them
This is a wonderful song.
