story time: when i was in college i became good friends with my english professor. we bonded over a lot, but music was always in discussion. i told him i loved Iron & Wine and he informed me that when he was attending Radford University, Sam actually stood in as teacher one day for his cinematography class. one day i went with him to his house so we could pick up this mobile coffee-cart he had built for a coffee shop that was opening that week. before we loaded it into his truck he told me to open the drawer, and inside was Iron & Wine's "Our Endless Numbered Days" on vinyl, which he was giving me as a gift from his personal collection. a couple of years after i graduated he passed away, and to this day, anytime i listen to Sam sing, i think of my old mentor and pal. this performance made me emotional, yet calm. life is about feeling...and remembering. thank you for this
That is a beautiful story! ✨
Thank you for sharing this magic 🙏
❤️🔥
Right on. Thanks for sharing! Story time is a good concept. Everyone has a good story to tell and that was a good one.
this is the gift of creation, passing on that fire, now you passed it to us . Thank You x
thank you, reader
Imagine you are just hiking through Yosemite on a nice sunny day and walk into a clearing and see these two dudes just jamming out.
My Hubby and I married one full moon @ deadhorse point in So. Utah... Just a couple witnesses, a campfire and the officiant ~ Out of the blue this lonely saxophone started to play at the most wonderous moment during the moons ascent. When it finished we exploded in cheers and applause. Then found the musician, invited him to share our champagne~ Magical.
I would prefer witnessing this live jam once in my life than finding an actual unicorn
I would cry like a bitch
I’d be happy with either one. Both and I’d probably die 💀
...tripping on Shrooms😌🌿
My son came to my daughter after he crossed.. He told her this was his song to me. Sons are like birds flying upwards over the mountain.
My son's name is Robin. And yes my Robin bird is flying always over the mountains. He is with me all the time. He was 33. I see 33 all the time.
Thank you Mr. Bird too! The sounds were awesome.
I have three sons and can't imagine the pain of losing a child. It sounds like you have found some peace. Wishing you the best and here's a hug from one mom to another.
Dude! Nobody warned me that it would be Iron and Wine AND ANDREW BIRD! Why is his name not in the title?! This is amazing. Two of the absolute best artists out there. Nice to hear Upwards Over The Mountain again. and to see Sam and Andrew do something together absolutely makes my day.
It would be special enough with just Sam playing for the Park but Andrew kind-of slides in from the right & harmonizes like he's singing to himself in a church.
The two together are very powerful but in a quiet way.
Like they're both saying thank you for this amazing scenery. 👏
I came back to this comment to thank you for mentioning the artist's name. I never would've known about all his great music if it wasn't for this comment. It is surprising they didn't include him in the title. I've enjoyed all his stuff I've found so far. Thanks!
Right?
I had to look it up
I have watched this video literally countless times.
a whistle off in a song that makes a grown man weep...never thought I'd type those words...I'm not crying, you are!
Maybe I'm missing it but I see no mention of the name of the fiddle player. That is Andrew Bird and he's a genius in own right.
It is there at 0.05 "Ïron & Wine ft Andrew Bird". I noticed it because I wondered who he was and agree that he is very good.
The mysterious production of eggs has a permanent spot as a playlist in my library. My dewy eyed Disney bride what has tried, swa…..
Literally my favorite musician of all time. I've seen Andrew Bird in concert a few times, and he's just so accomplished as a performer. He brings new life to his songs every performance, it's crazy to see. I'm seeing both of these gentlemen in August and I couldn't be more excited!
he needs more recognition!
@@watenallace663 funny how a decade changes the game as new people discover artists. he was ubiquitous in the mid oughts & far from underrated. glad he seems to be seeing a resurgence?
for a lil cool niche interesting thingy - check out his rotary speakers he uses for performances. he's brilliant live (or otherwise).
The colour correction is absolutely beautiful
what do we call this
celluloid film
Good eye
As beautiful as a good film
Indeed it is...
So good. This version should be released to Spotify!
This is the best “take away show” I think they’ve made in over 5 years at least in my humble opinion.
My youngest son introduced me to Iron & Wine two decades ago. We are still loving his music. Sam Beam is the closest thing to the genius of Joni Mitchell that I've ever heard. His way of weaving poetry and music is akin to hers. Beautiful and moving. And Andrew Bird is a major plus!
When Sam came to Brazil a few years back, he started playing tree by the river, the crowd started singing along immediately, he got genuinely flustered by the reception he was getting and started over the song, his reaction was so authentic and humble I loved him way more than I already did
Oi! Quando foi que ele veio? Que coisa incrível ♥
@@sorayareinecken isso foi em 2016? Acho, foi em são Paulo, no cine joia, talvez o melhor show que eu já vi?
Imagine hiking through Yosemite, feeling the breath of planet earth, when you hear this music carried on the warm breeze.
Upward Over the Mountain Is an all timer for me, and this rendition is incredible. Jaw dropped over a song I've listened to a thousand times. Bravo
It's so stupid. This shouldn't exist. It's like the perfect live rendition of this song I've been dreaming about since I first heard that song all those years ago.
This version of 'Upward Over the Mountain' is so precious. Just, wow.
andrew bird and iron & wine in the same video holy shit this is unreal
is it really andrew bird?
@@cheirinhodepacoca Yes it is
My thoughts exactly!
And they're touring together in 2022!
Ya I was looking for this comment I thought that was Byrd. Sweet
I've always loved Upward Over the Mountain, and this is the best version together with Andrew Bird. I think of my 2 year old son when I listen to this song. Hes such a momma's boy, but I know he'll reach that age where he'll do it all by himself and I will let him be a man and he'll be okay.
Yeah I loved this song in college but it hits so different as a mom to a little boy.
Lyrics:
Mother don't worry, I killed the last snake that lived in the creek bed
Mother don't worry, I've got some money I saved for the weekend
Mother remember being so stern with that girl who was with me?
Mother remember the blink of an eye when I breathed through your body?
So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten
Sons are like birds, flying upward over the mountain
Mother I made it up from the bruise on the floor of this prison
Mother I lost it, all of the fear of the Lord I was given
Mother forget me now that the creek drank the cradle you sang to
Mother forgive me, I sold your car for the shoes that I gave you
So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten
Sons could be birds, taken broken up to the mountain
Mother don't worry, I've got a coat and some friends on the corner
Mother don't worry, she's got a garden we're planting together
Mother remember the night that the dog got her pups in the pantry?
Blood on the floor, fleas on their paws,
And you cried 'til the morning
So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten
Sons are like birds, flying always over the mountain
Thank you
Thank you, sincerely.
I always thought he said "father"
Where we pray when our hearts are strong enough
We can bow, 'cause our music's warmer than blood
Where we see enough to follow
We can hear when we are hollow
Where we keep the light we're given
We can lose and call it living
Where the sun isn't only sinking fast
Every night knows how long it's supposed to last
Where the time of our lives is all we have
And we get a chance to say
Before we ease away
For all the love you've left behind
You can have mine
just giving some love to Andrew bird in the comments here. when he comes in around 2 min, chills. saw these two together in Pittsburgh last night and they preformed three white horses together with upward over the mountain for the finale. as someone else said, this music simply touches your soul. you feel so seen as a human being, with all accompanying pain and joy. thank you two for your music - it is healing!!
I feel that "folk" music was the original "Indy Music" , pure & unfiltered - this is beautiful.
I'm not someone who usually leaves comments on videos, but this here is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful and perfect things I have ever seen/listened to, it is so perfectly made, everything is so in touch that I literally can't find words to describe how it makes me feel. Everytime that I watch it, my soul and heart is touched so deep, it reaches levels that I didn't even know existed, it brings me a feeling of peace, completeness and, at the same time (even though it might not make any sense) that there's always more to life and living. I feel emotions that I would not be able to tell of. Anyways, love it so so much, hope that everyone here feels, at least, a little bit the same. Thank you so much for all the people involved in this project. Love and light for y'all people!
Thank you for expressing how I feel.
me 3
Just had a good cry over the meaning this video and your comment have given me
I surpress a lot of feeling and this beautiful video let me vent it out in a healthy way
@@zarz55 crying sometimes is the best we can do, and this "good crying" usually helps a lot. Hope you're doing good and that you get better from the things you don't tell anyone. Love and light for you and the people you care for
@@zarz55 two months on, and I hope you haven't forgotten to come back to this and remember there is a good part of feeling. Two months ago I was gonna kill myself. Right now.. I'm still going. I hope you've got some peace right now bud.
I'm convinced this is the best video on all of TH-cam
Everything about this brings peace to my soul. Sam and Andrew are soul saviors.
A ball of emotion I didn't know I had just melted and came out of my eyes. Pretty sweet listening
The same thing happened to me…what a gift.
When Andrew plays 3:43 his face shows the true emotion of this beautiful song.
This gave me the same shivers down my spine as when I heard 9 crimes of Damien Rice for the first time.
You are a man a excellent taste
Man, I listened to that song yesterday and I still got shivers like it was the first time hearing it. One of the most wonderfully melancholic songs I can think of. There are an awful lot of songs out there, but you incidentally brought together two that are of great importance to me, and I appreciate you for that.
Wow. Listened to 9 crimes just b4 this. ❤️
Great taste. Both incredible songs and artists.
9 crimes is incredible, going to go listen after this
"Blood of the floor, fleas on their paws and you cried til the morning" i have a such distinct memory of being like 4 years old and watching my mum cry to that lyric
Aw
How ironic, This was the first CD I ever bought, in 2004. I was 16. This was my favorite song for years on it. And I just got to visit Yosemite for the first time in my life recently. And saw Sam play live for the first time too. What a treasure. I'm glad he hasn't forgotten these old ones as I feel they're the best.
It's a truly awe inspiring place. Come out to Utah and see Zion. It's equally breathtaking. ✌️🇺🇲
John Denver would be so proud of this. This wonderful music in a truly majestic place. This is something I could have seen him doing.
How is it possible to make such a beautiful magical place even more magical? Well done Sam and Andrew
iron and wine plus Andrew bird.............. sick. Cheers for that nice surprise
Was suppose to see them in 2020 at red rocks, it's been postponed twice 😣 hoping next year works out!
My two favorite artists performing in my favorite place in the world...This is a dream.
I was just clicking on random videos and came across this. I never expected to hear such a beautiful song!
There's a pristine beauty to these songs. I love them, they're really mirror the rhythms of the soul, these moments of the most sincere confrontations of one's soul with one's fate are the deepest realizations of truth.
Listening to this at the end of the year makes me excited and emotional. I cannot describe the feeling. Shivers down my spine. Love everything about it.
I got those shivers up my spine over the shoulders and out over my head.
Tiny Desk Concert does the same.
What a truly blessed soul and audience 🙏🏻
Man, two legends. Sam Beams ability to create an entire atmosphere with his melodies and lyrics is otherworldly.
Andrew Bird is a giant too , of course.
Yeah, he takes you on an incredible ride. Not just one of his songs, but all of them. WOW!
You've gotta love Sam Beam. He wrote, recorded, and produced his debut; The Creek Drank the Cradle entirely by himself. Shipped it off to Sub-Pop records and got signed on just like that. The true definition of a self made musician. I've loved, been moved, and been in silent awe of his music since those humble beginnings.
Yeah. He didn't even have a studio. He just borrowed a friend's 4 track to record the album. Gotta respect that.
Like Jewel, check out the great Joe Rogan conversation with her.
No doubt. He's a giant!
And now, though he has access to a studio full of musicians, he hasn't lost the magic of those humble beginnings.
The story is actually even better than that. He actually gave his friend the demo as a gift, and his friend was friendly with the people at Sub Pop. His friend showed them the demo and Sam got a call from the telling them they were interested. It hit him out of left field. I can’t imagine the look on his face during that phone call.
This is just purely fucking beautiful in so many ways. I cried a little bit.
Iron & Wine has a special place in my heart.
Sam is a legend. Found you in high school and been a fan ever since. Here's to many more years of enjoying your enchanting melodies.
La Blogothèque, the OG of this type of video. Still great after all these years! Thank you!
You missed Sideshow Alley :)
Just two dudes creating magic, making the world a better place for us to exist.
This is the America I love.
well said.
americana and folk is such a beautiful subset of the music from this country.
UK citizen here. I love America too.
Sam's music was the key to me learning that if i wanted to sing the songs I've written properly, i have to be on the very edge of the emotion placed within the words.
I don't have a great singing voice, but some of the recordings i feel best about, were sung while on the verge of tears.
This inspired the day, thoughtful lyrics in a natural environment
the violin plucking and sliding at the beginning is super good
Huge fan of Sam but recently was turned on to Andrew Bird. This is so cool. Lived in the Bay area for 20 years. Yosemite is my favorite place in the world and to see my favorite artist playing there is just incredible.
How could you be so cruel as to lay my life out for everyone to see in such a beautiful prose. Thank You. 🙏
At a loss for words on this one… thank you all of you guys, especially the Wine and the Bird.
Love this! Reminds me of the same sentiments from Cat Stevens, "Father & Son." Soulful, beautiful!
So beautiful. "Sons are like birds..." Yes, they are.
Wow, that whistling part was so good.
Serious goosebumps every time the violin starts. This song is hauntingly beautiful
Love this version of Call It Dreaming!!
I was introduced to Upwards Over The Mountain through the Duncan Trussell Family Hour, at the end of his most famous episode that included his mother mere weeks before she passed. It came to me at a time where I could not only relate to it, but I had just recently lost someone close to me. Cherish your loved ones, friends. Cherish them and let them know how much you cherish them. One day you may find it too late.
My favorite song in such a magical place!
I used to listen to this song last year, algorithm decided due to whatever reason, to never show this song in my feed again, it's been almost one year, i got this as a suggestion today, so happy.
Watching/listening to this music video was my first time experiencing your music and it was so beautiful and moving and it spoke to me in my soul and helped me realize that I needed to have this song in my life but just didn't know it, my father passed away 3 years ago from congestive heart failure 3 days after his 73rd b-day and I'm still recovering from that loss but these songs reminded me of him in so many ways it has theraputic value to me as I'm filled with peace when listening to your music video so thank you so much for your gift and talent
This is as wholesome as can be.
what a man he makes me know what having a soul feels like.
Violet skies 💜
these fellas look better & better as I keep up with their lovely performances. sound damn good, too.
Too beautiful
My story: I stumbled on this song when I was finishing high school. After my last exam (physics) I ditched my toxic friends that wanted to hang out cause I wanted to be alone, it was very cold, I was wearing a coat on 6th of June, 2013 and I walked to this beautiful park in my hometown that I had no idea existed listening to Upward Over the Mountain on repeat. I met a lovely old woman there and we became friends for a bit. But then fell apart
This feels like in wandered into a dream.
Such an organic way of creating heavenly pieces... Thank you
This song reminds me of a time in another life💫
At first I was like what is that beautiful instrument doing the lead, then I saw the violin and then realized it was Andrew Byrd. What a special video
Working for Lucky Brand took a year out of my life, but this video restored that year.
I've been watching this on loop for months.
Just saw him a little bit ago.
It was too much.
La photo est magnifique, la réunion Andrew Bird et Samuel Beam est une merveille, le cadre est à tomber,… spéciale dédicace à ma douce à qui je m’empresse de partager la vidéo.
This is relatable. I used to go to the park with a few friends and jam - while maintaining that deep connection and love for the nature surrounding us. This was beautiful, thank you.
Mountains and moments over business and stress. Thank you, I took this a perfect personal way
Wow! I didn’t know these two came together for a collab. My soul is so happy. 🖤
Beautiful.
Of the 18,000 years of content on TH-cam this is my favourite 9:55
Amazing location, the woods and two musicians, the one tracking shot throughout the video so beautifully and majestically done, interweaving scenery and music and performer as they bow to each other, the harmonizing between nature, voices, and instrument, the back and forth and whistling. The first shot at the beginning def set the tone.
Exquisite. Touches the soul. Captures the essence.
Beautiful musical mountain adventure!
the violin gets me every time, gonna blast this when on the road fur sure!
Favorite video of the year
This is my favorite musical collaborations of all time. For me personally, the only other thing that could compare would be Radiohead and Sigur Ros performing music together.
Words can't express what, but yours just did.... Beautiful feeling!
Sam Beam, you make me cry. This is a beautiful set of songs, and surrounded by the grace of nature. Wonderful!
I had the video playing in the background when the whistling started. Had to look and sure enough it was Andrew Bird. How cool!
this is it. the best video on youtube
So beautiful in it's simplicity. Always an inspiration, La Blogothèque.
This is literally hope for the future in a song, if you can wrap your brain around that.
What first word?
You know in meditation and hypnosis when you’re told to close your eyes and go to your happy place? This is mine, caught on film.
Everything about this is perfect. So beautiful.
Omg, two of my most favourite artists! What a treat to see Andrew Bird playing here.
Mine too!
If you listen closely at 0:29 you can hear a faint chuckle coming from someone overhearing them.
That laughter gives me a soothing warm aww everytime I hear it, the rift he plays starts to open up and they realize as we do that something special is about to happen...
One of them actually dead plucks a string and it kind of makes a bunk noise, and you are hearing Sam chuckle a bit at his fun, as I'm sure being around Andrew probably made him a bit giddy, I mean the artistic chemistry between these two is unparalleled
2:20 Sam's vocals exactly match the frequency of that note played on the violin.
Was going to see them together last year but it didn't happen because of covid, so I'm glad I get to see this now
This is simply amazing..so full of soul, spirit and emotion..leaves me almost speechless
This collaboration beautifully captures the bittersweet reality of life's changes, urging us to accept them with grace. Set against the backdrop of shifting seasons, it reminds us of the natural rhythm of life, where happiness and sadness often go hand in hand. In a way it reminds me of landslide by Fleetwood Mac
Nice!
I can’t stop listening to this, beautiful
Two of my favourite Iron and Wine songs played out in nature? amazing. AND Andrew Bird is in it? Call me dreaming.
Best music video. Ever.
