- Gregory Alan Isakov is a Singer/Songwriter living on his ranch in Colorado. His latest record 'The Weatherman' was released in 2013. His folk-music songs are both fragile and strong, packed with beautiful melodies and great lyrics. We met him a few days ago in Cologne on his European tour together with Steve Varney on banjo on a sunny afternoon. This one is off the recent record and it's called "Suitcase Full Of Sparks".

Cardinal Sessions was founded in the summer of 2010. They challenge the classic music video and try to replace impersonal footage with immediate and emotional snapshots.
Bands from all over the world with their different genres present their songs reduced to the essence of the musical spectrum - only vocals and unplugged instruments. Due to the spontaneous live-aspect and the approach to record every song without any additional rehearsal, songs emerge that often sound significantly different to their album versions.
We film on locations that the musicians mostly choose by themselves: remote places, frequented streets, parks, woods, fields, bars; nothing is impossible. We have accomplished our goal if the location fits well to the background of the music we and the artists want to present. But our most important purpose is that there are no borders: we film everything that we like, no matter how popular, famous or also unknown a band might be. It is still important for us to support local talents and it will always stay part of our concept.
The Cardinal Sessions team can also be booked: for example to film short documentaries of album recordings, studio recordings or live concert moments that you want to capture.

LOVE FROM IRELAND 💚💛💚
Steve Varney's background vocals and banjo really adds magic to this song. This version is better than almost all renditions of this song, including the studio one
ah man agreed love me some steve varney
Which version is better though? "Almost"
Varney is a gem.
That thumb up-strum at 0:46 is so well timed!
Still listening to one of my favorite performances in 2020. Who's with me?
I’m with ya 💕
BBBBBINGGGGG! 🙋🏻♀️
I'll be always here....
Something in the voice.
Crying my eyes out I'm with you
I pulled up the lyrics to sing along with accuracy, and boy.. What a well-written song. Not a line out of place. Not too bulky nor lacking. Just enough color to paint exactly the right picture, without dashing the whole thing out with over statements. He's really got a nack for this, and we're all richer for it.
I heard this song for the first time after coming across someone sing this in downtown Denver today. I sat for hours listening to him sing and play. Now I have a new favorite song ❤🥹 thank you
Greg Isakov and Steve Varney, what a fantastic duo!! ❤️
Probably the thousandth time Ive listened to this version, and I could listen to Gregory and Steve a thousand more times.
I have a park down the block, trees are trees, wish Gregory was there and people could live in unity too...
I love Gregory's hat! And this song!
Just plain glorious!
Always makes my heart beat faster. It wants to love again ❤
Gregory Alan Isakov, you've been blessed with a beautiful voice and talent to play guitar and write beautiful songs! Please, keep making great music and sharing it with the world and stay humble and nice.
Listening to Isakov on dark lonesome dirt roads taking pictures in the mountains sort of sums up my 2020
Every time I hear someone say "Theres no good music today" I direct them to GA Isakov
StuON22 their is always good music around. An I am a 60 year old scouser iou
Finding these 2 bros in a park singing this song is exactly what 2020 needs.
Love this guy! While listening this this, the world could stop...Thanks for these 4 minutes out of time.....
Simply Beautiful🌹🎼🎶 The best place to play music is in nature
This is best version ❤
He's one of the most beautiful souls I've had the pleasure of seeing live and meeting. He's so humble and genuine, and is truly blown away by how much people love his music. :)
you blew Gregory when you met him? Wow! A real fan.
Yup! He totally is! He is. my friend and like family to me. He played one of his songs at my moms second wedding that I was at in Scotland! I love and miss you Gregory!! (: I hope we can go to Scotland again sometime soon!! By the way.... I am in 7th grade, and he is like family to me and my mom and of course Tyler Knott Gregson.
Went to my first office job today for data entry, came home listened to this and broke down crying. I'm literally doing what I swore I'd never do.
hope you find something to do closer to your heart. Good luck and God bless.
Get up and just get out man
when my anxiety is high I listen to Greg It always goes away
Definitely road trip music..
Buy a copy of tao te ching
I love his soft soothing voice.
Thank you for brightening up my Monday. It's week 8 of lockdown in 2020 in the UK & listening to some great music on TH-cam. I saw Gregory play in London a couple of years ago with Joe Purdy and it was a great night. I was also fortunate to meet someone sat next to us called Alex who goes by the name of Our Man In The Field. He's worth checking out if you love this kind of music.
Have listened to this version tons of times. By far my favorite. Steve Varney absolutely kills the harmonization on this version and every subsequent version since he has linked up with Greg. What a treat to have these two musicians playing together.
Colten Steve Harney is amazing what luck for these two to link up.
Thanks for that. Was astounded by how good the Banjo was harmonically and didn't know his name.
The subtleties in his singing, playing, and lyrics add up to sheer perfection.
Man. Steve’s banjo play is so great
There are people with angelical voices. There are angels who sing. And then there is this guy.
Benjamín Castillo Listen to Pete Siner- Tonight
The vibe in this one, the banjo and the harmonies and that sunshine through the trees is just magical. I absolutely love it. So hope to see this guy live sometime. Thank you, Cardinal Sessions, one of my new fav places to hang out.
If you go see him live sometime, make sure it's one of those cozy, intimate venues for
+spreagadh I could really imagine that. He actually played a super intimate gig here in Copenhagen a couple years ago but I didn't know him then. Really bummed. I guess I could always set my sails for the states sometime and try to catch him there. Either way its gonna happen.
that whole band is amazing. I saw him in Charlotte NC last year. They play one of the best concerts i have ever seen. GO SEE THIS GROUP
He writes about dirt, sky ,water and love. What else is there?
Christmas Carpenter pain
The last two stanza are close to me .Threw my bottle to the ocean she never wrote me back " seems like he wants to communicate with his long lost love, just like people used to write down their wishes, put it in a bottle and throw it in the ocean . He puts forth his feelings but doesn't get an answer thereby the "she never wrote me back " spending all of his time in anticipation of her reply is harsh on him and after all this time "all the countless days along the sea of blue " he just wants to move on with his life but finds it difficult . Without her answer to his proposal he feels he needs to be content with the thought that no matter where she goes in the the end they'll both die and will be buried close to each other "I'll meet you in the graveyard" with "winter trees" and "stars" above them where they'll lie peacefully forever showing his eternal love for her . Even after all this self-deluding he catches himself hopeful, craving to know the possibilities of what life could be if she were with him. " Let's open up this suitcase full of sparks " Moving on can be very tough .
Great analysis. As someone who moved to the west coast after a breakup I can relate to the “countless days along the sea of blue” line. Good job.
I discovered Gregory with this song. What an introduction into an amazing talent. This version and the banjo/vocal accompaniment is pure magic.
Steve Varney kiiiills it. Both of them . I love Steves understated but brilliant banjo but I came for the harmony
Love, Love, Love this song! 🖤🖤🖤
one of the few talents who sound as good live as they do on their album.
I think he sounds even better live than on record. I've seen him live 3 times.
I can attest to that. GAI is totally legit live.
+James Buttram I saw him live last month! Amazing experience.
I'm about 99% sure this is the version on the album :)
James Morrison-Knight nope this is a live version... but it's still good!
That's gold right there!!!
It was because of this song, this exact video, I tried my hand at folk music. I couldn't have finished my album were it not for Gregory and his music. Nothin' but pure admiration for that soul right there.
you can tell by that old and very well used guitar, this guy is nothing but genuine and a REAL musician.
Soothing to the soul
My favorite song. Reminds me of my favorite love
I love that hat
I need so much more of this in my life.
Most incredible musician. I love him....
love me
Great sound. Heartfelt lyrics and delivery..
That Oklahoma sky
Like his voice. Very unique voice.
Herd Him on roadies one time and was immediately hooked on his voice since my discovery of him I've taken the time to listen to a soiled portion of his work and I was not disappointed in a day and age when music all sounds the same this man sounds completely different from everything else and I love it
Must learn to play this banjo part!
this is my last real relationship in a nut shell good shit
Love his voice and his guitar!!
such smooth mellow vocal skills. I'm loving the awesome lyrics
A gift. Incredible talent.
he's on my list of bands to see, just waiting for him to come to town.
a harmony fer the ages
Enjoying your music
Fantastico !
3:21 something about that progression on the banjo there that he does a couple of times during the song is just mesmerizing

Amazing. So so good.
So. Fucking. Good
Love this man
Love this song! Beautiful!
This is just the best thank you so much for doing what you do love this session
This version is so good it gives me goose bumps!
Traveling through the graveyard with a suitcase full of sparks
Honey, I'm just trying to find my way to you
Lit up every campfire I found out in the dark
Oh, I cut down all the cottonwoods
I picked up all the arrowheads off buffalo trails of the Indians
The Oklahoma sky was cutting through
Along the tracks with the Runaway,
He just talks and talks and talks
Honey, I'm just trying to find my way to you
I quit counting stars that night in the cold by the satellite field
And I quit panning gold,
Digging holes
Yeah, I'm just trying to find my way to you
Swam across the Poncha
Took a train to Cataloo
Opened up my guitar case and all the songs were blue
I haunted all the alleys
Lord, I drifted down the valleys
Honey, I'm just trying to find my way to you
And I quit casting hooks off the California coast we held so dear
And I quit flashing smiles, and running wild
Yeah, I'm just trying to find my way to you
Threw my bottle to the ocean,
She never wrote me back
All the countless days along the sea of blue
Learned the language of the Mockingbird
She took and twisted all my words
Yeah, I'm just trying to find my way to you
And I'll meet you in the graveyard
With the winter trees and stars
Oh, we could open up this suitcase full of sparks
beautiful
This just feels good, Thanks Gregory
I FOUND U💜💜💜
yesss!!
mesmerizing
:'( so beautiful
The Oklahoma sky was "shining blue" and not "cutting through" 😆😋 Maybe Greg got a little distracted with the beautiful weather in which this video was shot.
This is so perfect...
See you at Red Butte garden in SLC in August, the best venue in SLC. Of 30-40 shows I'm seeing this year, this is the one I am most excited for. With Blind Pilot, who is also amazing. Maybe I'll luck out and meet you.

you can find more of him in his personal project called Kid Reverie
@@Gofaw thank you
What brand of banjo is this?
"The knews."
,dan'
anyone know how to play this on banjo?
Haha if you figure it out let me know! :P
I have a feeling it's in double c tuning but I'm not totally sure
James Berryhill Haha I still can't work it out! I feel like it's something different.
I've been focusing on the rolling pattern, and at least in standard tuning, on open G, I've been plucking 3 - 2 - 5 - 1 - 4 - 2 - 5 - 1 - 3 - 3 - 4 (or 5). I'm not sure! It's hard to see without being able to see what chords he's playing with it, since it might change the roll. But it's kinda sounding right.
It's a start at least!
Chords I'm seeing are F, E, and G, but he's all just fretting and rolling too.
Thoughts?
When did andy take a leave from the office and join alan?
