The problem is improvement has become conceptualised. Before it was popular on TH-cam you'd never say "I'm on self-improvement" that actually sounds stupid out loud. Just do the actions required to get to where you want to go, the end.

I think you're perpetuating a fundamental misunderstanding of the definition of "self-improvement". Put very simply, it's improving one's self. This video, by definition, promotes someone improving themselves by cutting out a new-agey fluff (e.g., working toward a meaningful goal, as you suggest in this video). It's not *that* you journal, it's *how*. Separately, if I recall, you meditate everyday. You read. You work out. This is all self-improvement...
To get from point A to point B, you have to learn. You have to practice. You have to develop yourself into the type of person who *can* reach new levels. You do this through trial-and-error of better practices that the poor decisions you're currently making. Just like you did.
I know you're a millionaire+ now, but there's a reason you started where you did. We'll never know for sure if you'd have reached the level of success you have now without those early stages of... improving yourself.
I like your content, but this clickbaity material isn't what I subbed for (information provided in an unproductive way - meaning that it is based on the premise of misunderstanding, and therefore promotes misunderstanding).

For example, too many people try to get out of bad financial situations by earning more money instead of just focusing on removing their bad spending habits first. Making more money isn’t a bad thing, but if you’re bad spending isn’t dealt with you’ll make slow progress.

When you've mastered this stage, then you can move on to goals.

The problem with self-improvement is the self part. If you forget your ego and give yourself to "your mission" you open up to the world, and change the paradigm, from a circular one to a spiral one. Think about improvement, how can you improve the world for you, for others and for the transcendent, and vices will remain very limited.
I always see this kinds of behaviours as stick and carrot situations you play with yourself. But in general if you have vices is because you are lacking something deep in your life, so instead of punishing or restricting yourself, I recommend going deeper, and finding that meaningful thing that can fill those voids. It can be work, it can be relationships, it can be wisdom, but it surely isn't cold showers 😂 (I've done them for a year though 😂)

Once again it all comes back to balance.
Don't implement these self improvement habits to feel justified or "enough" but to actually increase your quality of life. If these habits don't do that for you than you have no reason to keep doing them. Don't get obsessed over them and don't center your life around them. Don't become that guy that's personality and identity is based on "self-improvement".
Focus on one clear goal that is meaningful to you and eradicate everything that's holding you back from getting there. That's all you have to do in order to become a better person.

  • @developtogether

I'm sensing quite a bit of projection of your own experiences towards anyone who wants to improve themselves. We don't all think the same way as you did when you were going through your process of refocussing on work and elimintating or reducing those self improvement activities.
I operate my Personal Development framework on a much more simplified level that's not full of many lengthy activities that absorb more time than is effective to actually make personal progress, and it's this framewotk that I promote to my potential clients.
There's a middle ground where the majority of people live where they're not overfilling their days with self improvement activities, but are only on the plateue due to being confused with continued messages of what to do and what not to do, so they end up not doing anything.
My framework allows for personal development to fit nicely into anyoe's life, rather than making it a time-sapping chore and an excuse to continue with other vices as you described. This framework allows for a natural transition away from those vices, by gradually reducing or removing them at a pace that suits each individual, while they gradually make progress towards their goals at the same time.
You weren't completely wrong in your explanation, however your approach to assume everyone does self improvement in them same way as you, isn't really that helpful for the large amount of people who think differently.

I think there’s lots of valid points here. But I also think that self improvement isn’t all or nothing either. People have different standards of how they define self improvement and that’s based on their pre conceived notions and presuppositions that are individual to them and relative to their experiences. I think better is better even if it could still be better. That’s life and you’re always going to have problems to face anyway. Sometimes you gotta prioritize and compromise. Forward motion is forward motion. If you have purpose and something to aim at, chances are yes you will behave more optimally in the direction of that. Life is also more than work. Creating an identity based on your work is also a vice.

Love your video and I would love to add that this can happen however in today's society we are surrendered by vices and dopamine driven habits so sometimes its not about saying "its okay that I touch my wiener as long as I meditate" but rather replacing the vice with the good habit.. you clearly have a great mindset and see things through but most young men need that personal development to get to that mindset first - same way if they don't put in the work to get rid of the vices and suddenly they become successful or wealthy the money will only amplify those struggles and vices so sometimes focusing on self improvement is really beneficial but like you said - with healthy boundaries. Thank you for the value brother

Self-improvement can be a good, when it is an ethic of a group of people who serve each other. If a group says "if you are a part of us, one thing we think is important is that you continually improve your abilities or ethics while with us", as a parameter to belong, it is good, because you are improving yourself for the benefit/improvement of other's experience and how you contribute to them.
But yeah you'd have to be crazy to think improving yourself, for yourself and own personal, selfish gain, is somehow to be lauded/good...or even an improvement

Very good point but still self improvement itself wasnt meant to bring you closer to a goal. It was meant for people who are in a horrible stage of life whether mentally, physically, emotionally etc...I agree thst having a goal or purpose that you work hard to is the most important but most people cant even do that because their mental health is bad.
I can say experience that most people never make progress on self improvement because they consume too much self improvement videos and forget that they literally are their own person by mindlessly following what they see online. Or they see videos like this that challenge what they thought was the way and without question drop off self improvement and when they dont see immediate results they start doubting their choice qnd the cycle continues. The issue all boils down to consistency.

The reason why self improvement doesnt work for you is because youre already a successful millionaire with everything in place. Self improvement are for those who have everything to improve, which is the majority of people. Meditation helps therm become aware they are degenrates, journalling helps them claify their purpose, physical fitness makes them more aware of what they are eating, and this helps lead them in a better direction. I bet when you were a degenrate (which we all were at one point), you never openly hated self improvement, it would make you look stupid. But from where you're standing now, you feel you can.

You can operate in a state of loving your vices and all of your improvement activities, do this over an extended period of time, and develop no actual momentum toward the better you declare you want. I agree that these opposing activities keep you at baseline, not growing. Appreciate the insight to replace improvement tactics with
    better goal-accomplishing behavior. Thanks.

Great video and self-reflection! A little bit of clickbait title, but I agree on the central theme of the video, although I dont agree with the absolute statement that all people justify degenerate behaviour because they will rectify it later(even though many do), many people struggle with physical addiction. The phenomena of quitting vices due to a larger purpose is often seen in people expecting children, or for people working towards a specific goal, typically one that requires more from their current character. Corn use, among other vices is highly related to how meaningful you perceive youre life to be, adults with high corn use generally find low meaning in their life. Overall good video and reflection, but I would like to say that if you are in the phase of conceptual "self-improvement", great! We all need a place to start, but if you can envision a better life in 5 years, developing perseverance and patience, than you are half-way there!

I've been on self improvement for about 10 months at this point. Before I found self improvement I never drank any alcohol or used any nicotine products, but I was binge eating candy and snacks and energy drinks like crazy. I watched atrocious forms of adult content every day. I was antisocial and on the verge of suicide.
Then I found Hamza's youtube channel and his content helped me get motivated to make some big changes. I stopped eating all candy, snacks, desserts, sodas, energy drinks, all that sugary stuff, cold turkey style and haven't had any for 10 months. Started going to the gym. I also started nofap and have had some good success. I've reached two month streaks at best and I'm working on it. I also started daily meditation and journaling a few months ago because it's part of Hamza's 'Adonis Protocol'. I've been dropping things like processed foods, seed oils, soy products, milk and caffeine one by one along the way and I will eventually only eat meat. Right now I'm only eating single ingredient foods and I feel very good because of this lifestyle. I feel like a 'chad' superhuman in the middle of the average people with all these sugar and processed food addictions.
For this whole time I've been unemployed. I did go to a school for about 3 months, but now I've just been doing self improvement and just chilling for about 3 months. I've applied to jobs but haven't been accepted to any. I am constantly feeling pressure because I have to make the '10k a month' business but I haven't been able to quit my procrastination to do it yet and I probably won't be able to do it for months. I'm still taking cold showers and meditating and journaling every morning, because I think I would be disappointed in myself if I didn't because Hamza says I have to do them and Hamza literally saved my life so I feel like I have to listen to him.
This video made me think again if I should drop the cold showers and meditation and journaling and just try working every morning. I do have had an idea for an online business for a while now but I just couldn't make myself do it.
Thiss was a long ass ramble of a comment but thank you for this advice I'm sure I became smarter from watching this

I follow your teachings and I think you have some really good valid advice. I myself believe the number one advice is just taking action consistently and just keep doing it over and over until you get good, really good.
Anyway, you was a big advocate of 'Shadow work' not long ago which is a big form of self improvement! You yourself praised this form of self improvement as a great way of overcoming and linked it to the success you're seeing now due to removing and overcoming mental blocks, emotional trauma etc.
Anyway again I myself have done lots of shadow work, meditation, hypnosis, mainly to overcome my blocks in order to take the action on my goals (it's working rather well). Anyway again my belief is you need to take consistant, focused action in achieving your goals, you may be rubbish at first but as long as you're taking the action and keep practicing taking that action always, you get very good at it! But in order to take this action, when there hasn't been before, or not enough, was the realisation, understanding and (ironically) taking action on the mental blocks that stopped you doing this! Remove the mental blocks, then take the action! Simples. Anyway Charlie, this is more of an observation than a critique. Again love your work and your teachings and onwards and upwards on your continued success.
    Dean

People who are TRULY self aware, follow a process of 'self improvement' that factors in moral licensing
Which implies, one idea of self improvement is to NOT allow negative behaviours to sustain by 'offsetting' them with better behaviours
So you have your own idea of self improvement, in a way. So I don't thing the whole concept of self improvement is wrong :D

I can't agree here, maybe this concept is being thrown around too much these days, but the argument that you make is not against self-improvement as I understand it
To me, at its core, self-improvement is about realizing, experiencing first-hand that you're better off without these vices, for example eating healthy and not watching p*rn
It's not about justifying to myself, or even worse forcing myself to see these as vices, which would be coping; it's about actually experiencing the improvement - in this case feeling more energized and having a clear mind

Alex Hormozi says the same thing, just start the hardest work first thing in the morning.
The thing that some of your guys don't get, is that some people are so f*cked up that they can't just do the hardest thing.
That advice is akin to saying "just lift the 400lbs bro". No training, no warm up necessary.
The best the some people can do is small increments forward.
A key is indeed to root out all vices. Replace them with healthy, challenging forms of gratification. Instead of p*rn, fk IRL. Instead of snacks, eat fruits and veges. Instead of vicarious social media, socialize irl. instead of scrolling random media daily, consume random media only on Sundays, or once a month.
All of these are incremental processes, interspersed with some leaps of faith.
Like you said, content itself is a vice for many, including your content.
What you may be missing too is those 3 hrs that you spent every morning meditating, exercising and journalling might be what built the muscles to allow you to just start working immediately without any prep, to immediately lift the heavy weight.
There's plenty more to say on this but I'm out of time for now. Good video overall, especially what you said about vices.

I respectfully call "click bait", Charlie. 😁
And, I'm not saying you did something bad or wrong, you're obviously a great marketer and you know one of the first objectives is to get people to click play.
You DO believe in self-improvement... just the self-improvement that worked and continues to work for you.
From the 2:08 minute mark to 2:20, you spent some time clarifying that self-improvemnt is important. You did it again later in the video.
Also, I strongly believe that at least some of the training or information you learned from a "guru" somewhere... a book, a podcast, a video, a webinar, a live seminar, etc. helped you get to where you are today.
In order for you to put in the "work" that you correctly stated that is necessary to advance in life, you first had to THINK a certain way, BELIEVE certain things, and LEARN certain things you didn't know before. And I can bet that you did NOT figure everything out by yourself. Others that came before you left clues that you picked up to then... IMPROVE YOURSELF ;-), so you could become the person you are today.
    I could be wrong though.
