    Just got back from Cuenca. After see this video I got up every morning before my spouse got moving to make a trip to PECA. Nice place to read a book and enjoy some fresh bake goods.

      yes...and so close to the square...PECA is one of my favorite spots. Did you try the Cinema Cafe while you were there?

    All that walking and eating my way through Cuenca would make me take naps during the lazy afternoons. But despite the tendency to overindulge and be lazy if I were there, your videos definitely show that Cuenca is a place that's alive with energy and sounds-- from the street cleaners, produce sellers to the gas men powering everything.

    • @SlowpokeTravel
      @SlowpokeTravel  ปีที่แล้ว

      definitely alive with sounds! I feel like I've been noise-sensitive most of my life, but once we started traveling to Latin American countries, I had to give that noise sensitivity up :^)

    I occasionally tip "The Minions" and thank them for their work. They do a good job of keeping Cuenca clean.

    • @SlowpokeTravel
      @SlowpokeTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They do! I need to make a point of emphasizing that in a future video...for all that's going on in Cuenca, the city is very clean and crews always seem to be out working to make it so

    I can say with all the walking you and CG do, you can eat anything you want at the end of the day.
    Those dare garbage racks can be a death trap and they always pop up when you least expect it. Oh nice work on completing your Spanish lesson of the day. You will be speaking just like a local in no time at all. Cuenca is a beautiful place and I think you both have really enjoyed it

    • @SlowpokeTravel
      @SlowpokeTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I definitely understand spoken Spanish much better than I used to, but coming up with the words and speaking Spanish on my own still seems like a zillion miles away. And the pastries took a while to catch up with me, but they certainly have...the scales are tipping a little heavy and my britches are definitely getting more snug along my waistline ...oh well, that's science. Hope you and your wife are having a great weekend!

      @SlowpokeTravel  ปีที่แล้ว

      we had a great time in Cuenca and I'd definitely return (although it's a slight pain in the butt to get there). We spent a week in Guayaquil, but I wouldn't do that again anytime soon since Ecuador seems to be having a real issue with crime along the coastal regions. Hopefully the authorities in Ecuador will get crime under control and the issues won't grow and expand beyond where they are right now, but the news outlets aren't painting a positive picture--although "news" is a tricky thing to decipher nowadays.

    Many US cities are very walkable. I live in N Central Phoenix and walk 2 hours a day even in summer. 110F today, I love it. I have the neighborhoods all to myself, rarely see a car for 80% of the walk. Do all my food shopping on foot. I fill my car's 10 gal gas tank 1-2 times per year.
    I hear this in every expat video no matter where in the world they are. "Ya can't do this in America." Yeah, actually you can. Just because they didn't, or most Americans don't, doesn't mean you're forced to follow the herd.

    • @SlowpokeTravel
      @SlowpokeTravel  ปีที่แล้ว

      There are many walkable areas in the USA, especially in the cities, and I think many people can design a walkable lifestyle for themselves if they make the effort, but I feel pretty confident saying that most homes in the USA (apts, houses, trailers, ect) are not in areas designed for walkability. This is a stat from Forbes regarding automobile ownership: "91.7% of households had at least one vehicle in 2021. Only 8.3% of households did not have a vehicle. Idaho and Wyoming tied for the highest rate of car ownership nationwide, with 96.2% of households in both states reporting access to at least one vehicle in 2021" There are a millions and millions of US citizens living walkable lifestyles, but for the vast majority of citizens, this isn't possible; the country just isn't designed for it (they paved paradise and put up a parking lot, I heard)

    Enjoyed the video of Cuenca. Well done. What brand are your hats? I would like to get one for my husband. Thank you.

    • @SlowpokeTravel
      @SlowpokeTravel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Here's a link from where we purchased the hats on Amazon amzn.to/3q8xdPQ ...the hats have worked out very well. CG got her hat with a neck flap and I got mine without. The hat folds and travels well and does great in the rain and dries quickly. CG loves her hat. I'm happy with it, but I don't love it. It's a little too floppy for me and doesn't hold it's shape the way I like a wide-brimmed hat to do. I have a hat at home that I prefer, but it's a heavier hat, it doesn't fold as easily, and it doesn't dry as quickly, so in a nutshell, my favorite hat doesn't travel as well, so for me these hats we have in Ecuador are a functional compromise and work very well for travel. Thanks for watching our vids!

    Wonderful video. Thanks.My plan is to move to EC 2023. Cuenca looks like where I'll land. Your info/insites are helpful. Question: How long did it take you to adjust to the altitude ? Did you notice altitude ? What did you do ? I dont even know what questions to ask. I'm moving from MI, near sealevel. Thanks in advance.

      CG and I were coming from sea level as well, so I wondered how we would do with the change in elevation as well. CG really didn't feel much of a difference, but I did. We made a point of not being overly physically active the first few days we were in Cuenca, and we didn't drink any alcohol that first week. I felt easily short of breath, especially climbing stairs. It took me about two weeks to adjust to the elevation completely, to a point where I didn't even think about it...I even got to where I'd hustle up the long stairs for the exercise, but I'd still feel pretty wiped out at the top of the stairs.

    What? "You had to wait until you quit crying to start the video?" . . . . Was feeling good walking, eating & exploring Cuenca (thanks), when this comment popped my mood. Not always good to have a travel partner. Don't let them inhibit you. Just be you -- go ahead & cry, if appropriate.
