Great news! We've just been informed that the birds at the end of the video were rescued from an illegal bird trade and the ones that are healed do get released back into the wild! Of course, we'll still be doing the donation! ☺

What is in the museum complex is not a zoo, it is a refuge for birds that are recovering to be reinserted into their habitat, some of which can no longer fly and will stay there.
I used to eat dulce the Higo with Ecuadorian cheese (Quesillo). I am Ecuadorian, my mom used to give that when I was a kid. You guys reminded me of that 😊
Just a note referring to the zoo bit, in Ecuador zoos usually have native species that have been hurt by poachers or are sick, in the zoos we try to rehabilitate them of just give them a permanent home.
Hi Jordan and Emily, thanks for this video about Cuenca Ecuador. It is so interesting to see how the architecture is so different around the world. Must say they have a lot of detail and everything is so colorful. Glad that you showed the fluffy Meringue that looked like Ice-cream. Just looking at it on video you could sure trick someone that it was a mound of Ice-cream. The different ways that food in prepared is a great education by itself when traveling the world.
Hello 👋🏻Jordan and Emily, Thank you for showing us in your videos. Welcome to Ecuador, this beautiful country. And what is it called or considered a country of the four worlds? How good it is that foreign Americans visit us, this helps us a lot for tourism. Now I am a fan of yours and make more videos. to show us this beautiful country of ours
The Pumapungo archaeological site was a military fort but also where the Inca Huina Capac's resting palace was located and it is said that he had several species of exotic birds and animals at this site, which is why the bird rescue center is located there.

Great video. As Ecuadorian and having lived in Cuenca for many year I tell that more pillo wasn’t the best, it looks dry, you needed to eat it at the mercado, and also the figs you don’t eat just like they you have to have it with cheese. Those shops sell it like that for you to put the cheese of your preference at home, but if you see it in a restaurant as desert it comes with cheese and fresh milky cheese that cuts through the sweetness of the syrup. Also the milhojas wasn’t really the milhojas. Glad you guys enjoying Cuenca 💛💙❤️

The igos you eat it with cheese, the birds are from different places and stay there to recover and then are realice or if there to sick they stayed there.
The photography in your video is spectacular, it allows those who watch it to enjoy in detail the beautiful scenery that the city has, congratulations! I would like to send you some observations to give context, the humita, the oreja, the aplanchado, the fig (dulce de higos) were not designed in the local gastronomy to be eaten alone, you can do it, but it would be very strange for a local to eat them like that, except for the fig, the custom is eat them accompanied by a drink (coffee, chocolate, aromatic herbal tea) because as you could see they are dry, the fig is extremely sweet and it is totally unusual to eat it alone, it is prepared at carnival to be eaten inserted in "carnival bread" or accompanied by soft cheese called "quesillo", eating them that way is the closest to enjoying Cuenca food as the locals do. Thank you for visiting us, you are always welcome.
Tigrillo is with green plantains and mote pillo with Hominy that basically is corn, but not straight off the cob. Hominy is whole kernels of dried field corn (aka maize) that have been nixtamalized, a process that cooks have been doing since ancient times lol
I would have liked you guys to go to AMARU Zoo, there are modest animals there and the entrance is a little expensive but it is for the treatment of rescued animals.
Great video you guys, you did good crossing off your list. The juice you got perhaps the orange/tomato fruit you were thinking of, was it a blood orange? Glad the birds were rescued & have a safe place to rehabilitate. Miss you both, love you, mum.xx ❤️

Glad you enjoyed your trip to Cuenca. I lived there for a number of years. Never had the street meringue cream bc I would rather have rich galato for $1 more. Hate you missed encebellado (fish stew) - there's a good place in Cuenca although the coast is known for it. And yes, the sparkling water is the BEST - also great for digestion and altitude sickness.
The " dulce de Higos" is usually served with a piece of cheese to balance the sweetness of the desert. It's also consumed inside a bread (like a sandwich) with cheese. well.
Guys the one that you had as milhojas is not 😅 that's called aplanchado. The milhojas is like a cake and isn't that dry 😅 great video BTW the milhojas is shown in 18:23 the white one with brown stripes 😁 great video thanks for showing my country to the rest of the world.
The way you eat dulce de higo is together with salty white cheese . Otherwise it is too much sugar to take. You didn't try the empanadas de viento. One of the best savory pastries in the highlands and hornado the signature pork dish in Cuenca.
Gotta say, really nice intro and awesome food tour but it hurt me deeply that encebollado was not on that list. Those are not milhojas. You got “aplanchados” (“ironed out” because they are flat). Milhojas are literally the same as French mille-feuille. They are easily recognisable. The top layer is white sugar glaze with a geometrical chocolate pattern.
That’s not how you eat Dulce de Higo. 😂 That would make anyone sugar nauseous. You have it in a bread roll 🥖 with slices of White cheese. You use it as a spread. You did the equivalent of eating a spoon of marmalade. 😝
@@JordanandEmily haha. And it must always be with white fresh cheese in the bread roll, preferably with a creamy texture whether unsalted or salted cos that cuts through the sweetness.
No, at one point, while trashing Ecuador, you mentioned it “might be a possibility” that they were rehabbing the birds, but followed it up by saying you didn’t think so. Again, shame on you for spreading hate and lies.
Sorry for making a mistake - we didn’t see any signs at the facility to point out this fact. The only thing we can find stating this (in English) is a trip advisor comment! Do you have a website or anything we can post the url for everyone to see this great info? Thank you for advising us. It is ultimately great news that the birds are being looked after and rehabilitated.
Just so you know, when Jordan replied “I don’t think so” he was replying to Emily’s comment that the birds could possibly have some sort of disease not to the rehabilitation comment. When you don’t speak the language of the country you’re visiting & there’s no sign in English to let you know what is what, of course you’re going to guess as to what is going on. I know for a fact that they both do a lot of research before they go out exploring, this museum & the birds were unexpected as they thought they were just seeing the ruins, they certainly weren’t being disrespectful to the locals or Ecuador. Perhaps you should rewatch the video!
@@juliannedean537or, and bear with me here, it’s a difficult concept, they could have spent 30 seconds to google it. Or, they could remove the section from the video. Or, they could add add some subtitles explaining that the birds are rescued. But hey, they get clicks and money for this….
Let’s be clear: there are some great initiatives in Ecuador to save animals but in general animals aren’t treated well in Ecuador. Just look at all the stray dogs and how they are treated. Btw, how Ecuadorians treat each other isn’t an example for the rest of the world either.

Birds in Pumapungo are rescued and most of them can't be put in liberty again because they has lost their instict to catch... don`t critizice what you can`t understand, inform yourself a little bit before making your videos and saying your opinons, be more respectful, don't be dumb.
I’m very upset about this video. You provided false, inflammatory information. The birds at Pumapongo are all seized from the illegal bird trade. The ones that can be healed and released are released. Only the ones that are too sick or damaged stay there. It is classified as a bird rescue and sanctuary. If you are going to go to other countries, do even the smallest amount of research before you start trashing that county. I’m appalled at your behavior, and you owe the people of Ecuador an apology. Better yet, ask for donations to the bird sanctuary to try to help some of the damage you did. Just…wow.
Maybe it isn't obvious to everyone but I know for me as a viewer that it seemed clear they were only sharing their opinions and not facts. I definitely didn't come away from watching thinking "what a horrible place" but more "I hope those birds are there for the right reasons". At the end of the day we all just want to see animals happy and healthy so that is a GOOD thing.
Güitig sparkling water comes up from a natural fountain in Machachi village, near Quito, and near the Cotopaxi volcano. The original owners, three women, sold the enterprise to Tesalia Springs Co, the actual owner. This water is pure gold.

😀
El dulce de Higo se lo come con Queso
Good to know!
Anyone who is Ecuadorian ( not forcing)
👇
😊
That’s not how you eat Dulce de Higo. 😂 That would make anyone sugar nauseous. You have it in a bread roll 🥖 with slices of White cheese. You use it as a spread. You did the equivalent of eating a spoon of marmalade. 😝
Haha whoops
@@JordanandEmily haha. And it must always be with white fresh cheese in the bread roll, preferably with a creamy texture whether unsalted or salted cos that cuts through the sweetness.

It wasn't ice cream 🤣
No, at one point, while trashing Ecuador, you mentioned it “might be a possibility” that they were rehabbing the birds, but followed it up by saying you didn’t think so.
Again, shame on you for spreading hate and lies.
Sorry for making a mistake - we didn’t see any signs at the facility to point out this fact.
The only thing we can find stating this (in English) is a trip advisor comment! Do you have a website or anything we can post the url for everyone to see this great info?
Thank you for advising us. It is ultimately great news that the birds are being looked after and rehabilitated.
@@JordanandEmilyyou bet! Here’s a really nice article in English.
onehealth47.blogspot.com/2013/11/pumapungo-aviary.html?m=1
No vayan a guayaquil, salvense
hahah we missed Guayaquil! hope we didn't miss anything?
@@JordanandEmily solo bromeo pero guayaquil sí es bonito y tiene buena comida, lastimosamente esta peligrosa la ciudad ahora, quizas en otra ocación la puedan visitar
Birds in Pumapungo are rescued and most of them can't be put in liberty again because they has lost their instict to catch... don`t critizice what you can`t understand, inform yourself a little bit before making your videos and saying your opinons, be more respectful, don't be dumb.
Hey there! Read the multiple comments as and the pinned comment before you comment yourself 😄
Just…wow.
Oh that's great news! Glad they are being healed, which was one of the things we said was a possibility in the video!
That's so cool! It really really is. Best water we've ever had!!
