But manga really did a bad job of establishing any relationships (as well as failed in character development and made a plot feel too boring in many places). And anime became a real joke
The manga really did drop the ball. The quality of the entire last third was... not up to standards.

Please do not take offense to what I'm going to say. I mean no ill intent, but it is a genuine question I've had for a long time. I've seen a lot of people justify the RayEmma ship by saying that Ray was always there for her, supporting her. Which is true. But, my God, I used to call that basic friendship. Do people not support and encourage their friends through rough times? Is that not what would be expected of someone who grew up with you and holds you in high regard?
Even if it was indeed proof of Ray's affection for Emma--even though Ray has never openly shown romantic affection for anyone--I still can't understand how people can ship them considering how badly Ray was treated through most of the manga by his supposed best friends. Time after time he was constantly ignored or quickly cast aside by his friends. I just can't comprehend how could anyone could see that and use that as a basis for a relationship.
But, hey. Maybe I'm being too rough. Maybe I just don't see it.
If it makes you happy, then ship RayEmma to your heart's content.

@@Corerayyyy There are a few. Anna cutting off her hair to help fake Ray's suicide was what more or less kickstarted the ship. Another reason is how both of them have, at some point, served as paternal figures to Jemima, both in the actual manga and in some volume extras.
You can add the visual parallels between Yuugo and Dinah. Thematically, they represent Emma and how she lost Norman, but just looking at them you can see some clear resemblance with Ray and Anna.
Also chapter 116 made it clear that they author is aware of the ship. I mean, the entire group teased Ray about being worried about Anna coming with them on a mission and even made comparisons to Yuugo.
Now, it's true that these are minor points, and some even debatable, but we have to remember that Neverland is NOT a romance series. If you want romance, all that you've got is Norman's feelings for Emma, Yuugo's love for Dinah, and Isabella and Leslie. Nous and Nouma too, now that I think about it...
Either way, that doesn't mean you have to accept RayAnna, or even like it. Hell, the manga ended with just barely a hint at a NorEmma end. But as far as fanships go, there are reasons to understand why some people like RayAnna.

Basically after reading the manga I don’t get how people ship them,I get it’s other people’s ship and I respect it so much but,I’m still confused and idk about Emma and ray yes I have seen them grow their friendship stronger and they have hold hands before and teaming up on the manga (wait holding hands???) and basically all I’ve seen is Anna and ray getting the medicine? I can understand where you're coming from. I've always thought an issue with most shipping in general is that most take their ship for granted and then retroactively justify it by looking for stuff to support it rather than the other way around. I mean, if you want romance in Neverland, the only explicit scenarios are Norman and Emma, Yuugo and Dinah, and Isabella and Leslie. That is it.
That being said, there is nothing wrong with wanting to ship two characters you like, and there are reasons within canon for wanting to ship Ray and Anna.
The most obvious one is how Anna cut off her hair to help fool mama and escape. That's more or less what kickstarted the ship. As you said, prior to that point, Ray did not care about anyone other than Norman and Emma, he accepted Don and Gilda escaping with them as a concession more than being interested in their well-being. All of the events of the escape are what kickstarted his character growth and how he saw them all as his precious family and later was willing to die for them, not just Emma and Norman.
Another reason is how both of them have, at some point, served as paternal figures to Jemima, both in the actual manga and in some volume extras.
You can add the visual parallels between Yuugo and Dinah. Thematically, they represent Emma and how she lost Norman, but just looking at them you can see some clear resemblance with Ray and Anna.
This was enough to catapult Anna to the top 5 in the popularity poll, where she was drawn right next to Ray, because I'm sure Shirai and Posuka know.
Also chapter 116 made it clear that they author is aware of the ship. I mean, the entire group teased Ray about being worried about Anna coming with them on a mission and even made comparisons to Yuugo.
It's true that these are minor points, and some even debatable, but we have to remember that Neverland is NOT a romance series, despite the best wishes of some of the fans.
That doesn't mean you have to accept RayAnna, or even like it. Hell, the manga ended with just barely a hint at a NorEmma end. But as far as fanships go, this one has more foundation than most.
