Velo Solex wont run!

  • In this video I take a look at my old Velo Solex 2200 moped.. Its not runing and i try to figure out why by checking the basics- Is there a spark? is there compression? is fuel getting to the carb and to the combustion chamber?
    Lets see if I can make it run again!

    Growing up I was part of the Hells Bells Moped Gang. Blue and white model 5000 Solex. Today weather permitting my daily rider is a Phatmoto. I miss my Solex.

    The roller is covered in carborundum. It does not cause any excess wear on the front tire like you think it would. It's one disadvantage is it doesn't work if the tire is wet, so you can't ride it in the rain, and you need to avoid puddles. I used to have a Puch Newport II ZA50 2 speed. That thing would climb right up the side of a mountain in first gear. DO NOT put ethanol gas in a VeloSolex. It will melt the rubber diaphragm in the fuel pump. I use only TruFuel with some extra oil added. If it has been sitting for while, it is very important to remove and clean out the tank. The fuel lines are aluminum and tend to break very easily, so you need to be really careful while working on them. It's also a good idea to clean or replace the spark plug, even if it works. A new or clean plug will work better. I use the small E string for a guitar to clean jets and other small passages. I then flush it out with spray carb or brake cleaner.

      They do wear the front tire more then the rear... the front is sort of riding the tarmac twice with the carborundum roller... :)
      I once hit a snail at the annual Velo Solex Rallye in Denmark... That slowed it down badly! ;)

      @@SeasideGarage I put a new set of Hutchinson tires on mine, they lasted a LONG time. Part of the reason my rear tire wore out faster than normal is because I weigh 240 pounds, and carried another 30ish pounds on the luggage rack.

      There's something else that the diaphragm in the fuel pump doesn't like: Seafoam! It's a great cleaner, but I ruined a diaphragm using it. So yeah, avoid using modern day chemical-laced products on older engines.

    Great video! Im getting the urge to get my solex running again! 👍😁 They're fun little bike, definitely turns heads! 😊
    I ended up ruining the diaphragm in my fuel pump by spraying it with Seafoam, the rubber didn't like the strong chemicals in that product. I've got a replacement, just gotta get at it. 😉

    I use to start mine with my friend sat on the back whilst I spun the front wheel with my hands when I was too young to drive it. Great memories . Great video

    That's awesome you still have your solex. Iv been riding solex for 22 years now and I have many but I also still have my first one. I also started a solex gang we were the solex angels.

      Watch out for fake 3800 , there are a Lott of rebranded 4800,s around .

    I drive everyday a Solex 2200, the only way to make the machine working great is rebuild the whole engine,there's a gasket between the Transmission galet and the crankshaft carter for the compression in the down the engine which make working the fuel pump, it's essential, a lot put new piston,new cylinders but forgot to replace this gasket, if you see a lot of oil on your transmission galet, i found your problem

    Great video and massive help. Still struggling to get mine going, have changed the filters, plug etc. About to try spinning the fly wheel with my drill just wondering how you fixed the socket to the drill? Many thanks.

      I cut the socket end of an extension to it fitted into my drill.... But be very careful doing this because it can kick back and twist your wrist....
      Check your fuel pump... many times thats the issue... :)

    Fed video! Jeg overvejer selv at købe en Velo til hobbybrug, men har ingen erfaring med dem. Jeg kørte selv over 30.000km på min Suzuki K50, som jeg virkelig fortryder at jeg solgte.

      @@SeasideGarage Jeg endte med at købe en NSU Quickly i stedet. Jeg fik den billigt, da den ikke kørte særlig godt. Jeg flyttede nålen i karburatoren, så den fik mindre benzin, og justerede tændingen til frabriksmarkeringen, og nu kører den stort set perfekt!

      @@SeasideGarageJeg solgte egentlig alle mine knallerter da jeg fik bilkørekort for nogle år siden (med en enkelt afstikker til en kinesisk Dax, men det var en kæmpe fejltagelse!). Det var faktisk fordi min kammerat købte en Quickly for et stykke tid siden, og jeg fik lov til at skrue i knallerter igen, at jeg kom til at savne det. De er dejligt simple, og det tiltaler mig helt vildt at man kan få alle reservedele fra ny, hvis man kommer i problemer. Ellers har jeg det ligesom dig og synes det er sjovest at reparere de gamle dele :)

    Alot that goes on in the design of the solex engine and really the carburetor is more like a fuel vaporizer the fuel gets warmed up on it's way into the carburetor by the fuel line right next to the exhaust pipe and then overflows back into the tank and gets heated again by heat blowing on the overflow pipe and the intake is almost touching the exhaust pipe. Solex actually started out making carburetors and radiators.

    Nice video and moped that you have :) I have 2200 just like yours, but I can't get the fuel pump working. Have changed the membrane and checked the glass balls are there. But it still dosen't deliver any fuel. Do you have any ideas what could be wrong? :)

      If both balls are there including the seats, and the plastic piece is fitted the right way (its concave) then i would suspect the hole in the block to be clogged...
      Also check that fuel can actually flow to the pump from the tank. :)

    Yes you can get more power, even up to 65 kmh.
    But first try a so-called fast exhaust, and for more , try the 40 mm alu cylinder .
    It will run about 40 kmh.
    3 port cylinder bigger than card high presure head will give you about 65 kmh🤷🏻‍♀️🙈

    Hej. Tak for en fantastisk video.
    Jeg har fået en Velo Solex 3800 fra 1967 foræret. Desværre har den stået i et utæt skur i mange år, så jeg er i fuld gang med at skille ad, slibe ned og male. Det er hyggeligt.
    Men mit spørgsmål: Nu har jeg set så mange videoer af folk, der kører 3800. Det er jo uden gashåndtag, men der sidder den fine kobling. Men hvornår bruger man den? Flere bruger den ved nedbremsning, og andre gør ikke. Jeg er med på, at snøfteventilen lukker af og slukker motoren, men koblingen tager vel bare gassen af? Hvordan bruger jeg den korrekt?
    Jeg håber, det jeg skriver giver mening.

      Hej! og tilykke! Det er en fantastisk knallert...
      Der sidder en slyng kobling på de nyere modeler som gør det muligt at holde stille med motoren tændt... men det er ikke en kobling man selv slår til eller fra... det lyder til at du taler om nedgasnings funktionen på karburatoren som oftes arbejder sammen med forbremse kablet....
      Så den kan man bruge til at få motorens omdrejninger ned imens man bremser den. :)

    Hej. Min kammerat har en Velo Solex til at stå med et blæserhjul der har sat sig. Har du nogle ideer til, hvordan man muligvis kan få det til at dreje igen? Det er en 3800.

    Never ever run a small engine whit regular gas just buy non ethanol and it will run great ethanol live residue resine in the Small pasages of the carb and it won't run

    Hejsa. Jeg har et problem med min velo solex 3800. Den gider ikke at starte. Der er gnist og der kommer benzin, men der kommer ingen gnist efter at tændrøret bliver vådt. Håber du stadig svarer på kommentarer herfra :)
