I've had the Nitro Acer 5 for almost a year now (GTX 1060, i7, 144hz) and it was a giant leap from gaming on a macbook air from 2013. Runs well but has HUGE problems with thermals. The CPU hits +90c in almost every game, throttles every now and then, and that's all after I've repasted, downclocked the cpu, undervolted and cleaned the fans of dust. Runs modern titles on medium at decent framerate, but the sucker runs rocket league like a charm, 9/10 great for car-soccer.
I was actually sceptical of the design and was looking for a more toned down on like Lenovo's, but after buying it I can definitely say I love the design, especially the backlit keyboard.

They did that for awhile which was great but now they are slipping and we need to tell them that we notice and want it back. Or they might sneakily just stop doing the right thing entirely.

Oh ok thank. I have placed an over its costing me 400 bucks on black Friday deal. Last laptop I played it on was a average none gaming laptop and I never had a problem. I'm sure this will be more than fine for sims and a little online mmorpg

Also in my book anything NEW under $500 USD is budget, but of course I'm the type to buy used Lenovo Thinkpads for under $200 USD(most of the time under $100 USD), and I'm find with a 720p screen, or better, since I don't usually game on my laptop with anything more taxing on Manjaro Budgie Linux beyond something like PacMan 256, or Sonic Mania, and do my major gaming on my desktops, so take my comment as you will.
I have the Nitro 5 from this year and it is indeed a great bargain. The only real downside is if you're a power user, you'll want to double the RAM. And get the model with SSD!!

Plus is it a fact that a lot of people doesn't care about a shitty webcam that manufacturers keep on using time and time again. If the omission of the webcam can reduce the price of a product then by all means they should do it or at the very least manufacturer should give us the option to buy a webcam-less version. A price reduction is a plus to any consumer.
Considering that the major flagship phones have cameras that as a single component costs around 50$ it's a joke not to include a similar one on laptops. My 2 cents.
February 2020, I got the Acer Nitro 5 at best buy for $649 and I am beyond satisfied. Can run modern warfare, sea of thieves, fortnite, and overwatch perfectly fine. I was kind of surprised when I first played each of these games it recommended high-ultra settings. One downside is it makes me slightly uncomfortable that they run at high temps around 80-90 when playing but they've added a coolboost feature which increase your max fan speed and keeps it cool. I've played for hours on end with zero issues. Great pc
I’ve had the Nitro 5(i5 8th Gen) since 2017. I %100 recommend. I’m no video editor so I can’t speak for that. However, I did put this thing through school & am now using this for work- I do a lot of writing & have never had any problem with the keyboard. For gaming you can run pretty easily on high settings for 60fps. However I recommend running on low to medium & putting the far vision setting on high. Like this you hover anywhere from 80-100fps easily. Only negatives are: The key pad is not “good” it’s pretty bad haha. I recommend getting a mouse. Also, it’s pretty heavy. About 5-6pounds.

I would say yes. The Helios 300 1660ti/144hz/16gb/256gb goes for around 1200. So if you do have the money I would hands down go for the Helios 300. It is a performing monster. Look up reviews! It's beating some 2060 laptops too. I also think it looks much much better than the Nitro.
Thank you for this review. I've been looking for an affordable gaming laptops, and came across the Acer Nitro 5, but wasn't quite sure if it was good or not. Now after watching this review, I think I've made the right decision. Amazing video, keep up the good work.
I have the 2018 edition and I can say it was well worth the money. My only complaint is that the ethernet port has this weird plastic door on the lower side that doesn't really secure cables correctly.
@Chrismon if you're thinking about getting a Nitro, do yourself a favor and look into getting one with a Ryzen chip. While it works quite well out of the box and you can't overclock it, you can do some pretty impactful tuning, like raising your power limit as those usually come set quite conservatively. My 2500u came with a 25W limit out of the box, but I can get it to do 35W comfortably without throttling and 40W for tasks that require short bursts of performance as it throttles hard to 2GHz on all cores if it hits the temp limit. Without tuning, it boosts up to 2.9 GHz and stays there, on 35W I can get about 3.3 and 3.5 on 40W. I tend to lock the clockspeed a bit lower so that the APU can maintain stable max clocks ( the power draw is shared between the CPU and the APU), which gives me a considerably smoother framerate ( which is also a bit higher) since I don't have a dGPU

@@jonixas1 Exactly. All of this is because they wanted to try and keep the laptop "thin", but it doesn't make sense for a laptop like this. Just make it thick and allow me to use proper ports, if I wanted something thin and light I would've bought an ultrabook.

Got my Nitro 5 AMD version about a year ago, love the thing. It almost 95% of the time does the job for what I do, just note, fan noise might be a problem for you in games like cs:go or other 3D-rendered & shaded games, but you really don't recognize it with a good pair of headphones on :). Overall worth shelling out the $800 or so I got it for. I'd highly recommend if you just want something to play games on or do work. One last thing, the screen looks amazing!
I just got a 5 today. It looks nothing like yours (has ports in different places, ram slots are towards the center, etc... Maybe I have this years as it was a bit more expensive than what you say in this video. Mine has a 500gb ssd with 8 gig Ram (upgradable to 32) a spare slot for a HDD, Nvidia GTX1660Ti 6gb graphics card. and can out put 4k. It runs every game I own at over 100fps on max settings. It also doesn't have the red marks around the WASD keys. But those and the arrow keys are a bit more tactile than the others and have a better feel to them. I wish they'd have used that for every key. But the keyboard is really good, great positive feel to every key apart from the spacebar... Track pad on a huge TV is very fast even on the lowest setting and it's crying out for 2 dedicated mouse buttons. And the final point, you can not get this model with an AMD. It only comes with I5. I paid just over £800 so just over $1000... And I'm very happy with the video editing, alone. My old, not too, shabby laptop would output videos at about 1 minute per every 1% rendered at 720p @ 30fps. This will do 1% every 3 seconds @ 1080p 60fps... And that's while I'm watching hd vidios on YT Chrome... lol

I got my Nitro 5 for $500 flat on tax-free weekend! Love this thing! It does render some windows kind of weird though, some windows have blurry text compared to everything around them... Not sure what that's about - but I'm sure I can tweak it.That's my only "complaint" if you can call it that. Oh and Windows 10 is an actual complaint, but there's no helping that, unfortunately.
i bought this laptop a few months ago and then on amazon i buy one 16gb ddr4 ram and 1 seagate 1tb hdd. put those in and this laptop is amazing... 24gb ram, 1tb hdd, 256gb ssd. the laptop costed me $600 and the 2 things like around $100. so for $700 thats not a bad laptop. does get a little hot but nothing too major i also bought a cooling pad with adjustable fan speed so heat is no problem. Highly recommend it for anyone with a $700 budget.

@@zetoski610 cs:go is not a big game, it was made in 2012 and you can run it on a trash laptop. I can run CS:GO at max settings 80fps. Fortnite is around 60fps at high settings and Rainbow Six Seige 60fps at medium settings
I have the 1650 model and to be honest with you I kind of regret getting it but it will play games really well but at the cost of being really loud if you’re playing a new game. And coming out factory wasn’t able to do what I wanted it to do so I had to upgrade the RAM but that’s not really a big deal
There is a VITAL point that i didnt expect you to skip it. Im an student and i've been with this laptop (nitro 5) for more than 3 months and need to say that for the price and what you get inside is a good option, i would recomend it if you wanna play games at a decent quality and work with it. Im an student and i take this laptop to college so i need some battery life and something not too heavy and there Acer Nitro 5 got a point. Nonetheless here comes the big BUT and is the fact that Acer uses TERRIBLE thermal pastes so as soon as you buy it, change it. In addition we got a second problem and is the distribution and where componentents are setted up. Doesnt matter how hard you clean it (i unmounted entirely in order to clean it), what thermal paste you use (i use Artic Silver 5) it will keeps a maximum of 97ºC what is INSANE. Of course this temperature is not with every game, i have had this problem so long with GTA V and Watchdogs and TW3 near to 85 but do not reach it. if you search "Acer nitro 5 heat" you will see the problem at every forum Look at 7:00 and how the pipes are setted. There you will possibly find a why. Ironically my gpu is cool as fuck, ir hardly reach 80ºC even if i pull the crap of it. Need to say that i got my laptop in a high place, with nothing obstruying the air and with the total air flow possible. Is a wonderful laptop with a terrible inside design. May with this i've helped someone so, if you got any question here you got me.
@@tmasterix513 sorry for this late answer aaand nope, i do not experience thermal throttling. Even if it gets that hot i do not feel a lose of fps or performance in general. But i've found a solution about this hot temperatures, and its working for me without a noticeable power lose. And it's with undervolt. I make it run to 3.4 max (may up or down) and it do not get ovsr 85 degrees. Another thing i do is juts turning off the turbo boost with a 99% performance and hardly surpass 80-85 degrees and need to say that i did not experience ANY fps drop while playing TW3. It went as smoothy as always and i got impressdd
@@yack6182 Oh, well I got Dell G5 yesterday. It's awesome and has enough power for my use (I5 8300h + gtx 1050ti). It also never gets over 60-70 degrees thx to it's cooling design. Only downside is the screen, I've definetly seen better ones. Sucks that acer is still using the same cooling design from last year's nitro. 2018 Nitro was 650€ in our country with the same I5 8300h + gtx 1050ti but didin't buy it when I saw how it looks inside. Also my dell has a lot better overall design and features like SD card slot, fingerprint reader and backlit keyboard (not edgy gaming-red). Also my old laptop was dell aswell and it's very old but still works perfectly. Oh, and Dell G5 was 779€ here. But thx from the answer :)

I can confirm that its possible to overclock your panel to 90hz. I just did it a few hours ago. I lucked out I guess! Nice little bonus from an already great laptop.
Comparing the Acer that I got in 2018, it's quite sad compared to the current models. Got a 950m and an i5-7200U. The Nitro 5 is a super good value now I think.
For $700 (Best Buy price matched with BJs) I got the Acer Nitro 5 with an i5-9300, GTX 1650, 8GB RAM, 128 SSD, 1TB HDD. Phenomenal bang for your buck, I highly recommend. I love being able to play ATS, Euro Truck, and all the amazing strategy games I’ve missed out on as a console player.

I probelly have around 15 total channels that i cycle around so its not that big of a deal for me. If you have over 150 channels you watch on a regular basis, then you might have a problem lol. I would be more afraid of that overflowing my email with all the notifications constantly going off. I'm terrible at keeping my email up to date so that would be a major problem for me lol!

I got the Acer Nitro 5 (2020), I like it a lot, but there is a con. It's battery life is around 2 hours and at most 2 and a half hours. It doesn't matter if you lower lights, sounds, or display. It won't last long. That is it's only con though.
Still rocking a Y5070, only with shadow of War and other modern AAA titles do I get issues, just can't stand partserve here in south Africa for warranty, which means it was sadly my last Lenovo. In Europe and US I hear they have great support.
Zephyrus G has a 1660ti and has much better cooling and battery life + it's thin/light and looks much better than the Helios. Helios has better performance but if weight and thermals is a important factor then Zephyrus is better.

@Federal Republic of Aurelia I haven't bought the Zephyrus yet. I borrowed one from a friend to use for a couple of days and see how much I like it. I never purchase electronics before trying. I tested the Zephyrus G, Helios 300 2019, Legion y540 and the Omen 15t with i5+ 1660ti. Zephyrus was the lightest and the cleanest looking as compared to the rest (only one comparable here was the Y540) and the Helios had the best performance. But Zephyrus was Lighter and definitely had better Thermals, and I need to use this in class occasionally so I did not want a gamery look or RGB that the Helios and Omen had. So I decided that it's between the Zephyrus and the Y540 and since the Zephyrus has a better Battery and lower power consuming 35 TDP Ryzen 7, I have decided to get the Zephyrus. I haven't purchased it yet, but for my use case scenario, it is the best laptop. If you just want the best performance then I admit Helios and Omen have better performance, so if you just want the best performance laptop you should buy a Helios 300. But in the Thin & Light Department, The Zephyrus series is second only to Razer, which is out of my budget 😂
I'm going to update. After a week my SSD has failed. Browsing through Windows and opening folders takes ages. I tried loading up Tomb Raider and it took 8 minutes to load the game. (But when it does I get an average 126fps on ultra settings). After running a few tests it seems my SSD is only R/W @ 27mbs (27 was the max using Crystal, other tests were around the 24 mark) . Compared to the Hybrid 1T that's installed that gives me 173mbs R/W speeds. And, my standard, cheapest on Amazon, WD 4T external HDD that gives me 115mbs R/W speeds... I've got in touch with Acer. I'll let you know if they ever get back to me.
@@YtDay I fixed it now. It was my 1tb Hybred drive was slowing down my SSD for some reason. I now have a 2nd SSD installed instead so the 500GB boot drive and and extra 1tb storage drive. So it's all great now.

I have the Nitro 5 from this year and it is indeed a great bargain. The only real downside is if you're a power user, you'll want to double the RAM. And get the model with SSD!!

February 2020, I got the Acer Nitro 5 at best buy for $649 and I am beyond satisfied. Can run modern warfare, sea of thieves, fortnite, and overwatch perfectly fine. I was kind of surprised when I first played each of these games it recommended high-ultra settings. One downside is it makes me slightly uncomfortable that they run at high temps around 80-90 when playing but they've added a coolboost feature which increase your max fan speed and keeps it cool. I've played for hours on end with zero issues. Great pc

I’ve had the Nitro 5(i5 8th Gen) since 2017. I %100 recommend.
I’m no video editor so I can’t speak for that. However, I did put this thing through school & am now using this for work- I do a lot of writing & have never had any problem with the keyboard.
For gaming you can run pretty easily on high settings for 60fps. However I recommend running on low to medium & putting the far vision setting on high. Like this you hover anywhere from 80-100fps easily.
Only negatives are:
The key pad is not “good” it’s pretty bad haha. I recommend getting a mouse.
Also, it’s pretty heavy. About 5-6pounds.

I would say yes. The Helios 300 1660ti/144hz/16gb/256gb goes for around 1200. So if you do have the money I would hands down go for the Helios 300. It is a performing monster. Look up reviews! It's beating some 2060 laptops too. I also think it looks much much better than the Nitro.

Thank you for this review. I've been looking for an affordable gaming laptops, and came across the Acer Nitro 5, but wasn't quite sure if it was good or not. Now after watching this review, I think I've made the right decision. Amazing video, keep up the good work.
I have the 2018 edition and I can say it was well worth the money.
My only complaint is that the ethernet port has this weird plastic door on the lower side that doesn't really secure cables correctly.
@Chrismon if you're thinking about getting a Nitro, do yourself a favor and look into getting one with a Ryzen chip. While it works quite well out of the box and you can't overclock it, you can do some pretty impactful tuning, like raising your power limit as those usually come set quite conservatively. My 2500u came with a 25W limit out of the box, but I can get it to do 35W comfortably without throttling and 40W for tasks that require short bursts of performance as it throttles hard to 2GHz on all cores if it hits the temp limit. Without tuning, it boosts up to 2.9 GHz and stays there, on 35W I can get about 3.3 and 3.5 on 40W. I tend to lock the clockspeed a bit lower so that the APU can maintain stable max clocks ( the power draw is shared between the CPU and the APU), which gives me a considerably smoother framerate ( which is also a bit higher) since I don't have a dGPU

Just make it thick and allow me to use proper ports, if I wanted something thin and light I would've bought an ultrabook.

Got my Nitro 5 AMD version about a year ago, love the thing. It almost 95% of the time does the job for what I do, just note, fan noise might be a problem for you in games like cs:go or other 3D-rendered & shaded games, but you really don't recognize it with a good pair of headphones on :). Overall worth shelling out the $800 or so I got it for. I'd highly recommend if you just want something to play games on or do work. One last thing, the screen looks amazing!

I just got a 5 today. It looks nothing like yours (has ports in different places, ram slots are towards the center, etc... Maybe I have this years as it was a bit more expensive than what you say in this video.
Mine has a 500gb ssd with 8 gig Ram (upgradable to 32) a spare slot for a HDD, Nvidia GTX1660Ti 6gb graphics card. and can out put 4k.
It runs every game I own at over 100fps on max settings.
It also doesn't have the red marks around the WASD keys. But those and the arrow keys are a bit more tactile than the others and have a better feel to them. I wish they'd have used that for every key. But the keyboard is really good, great positive feel to every key apart from the spacebar...
Track pad on a huge TV is very fast even on the lowest setting and it's crying out for 2 dedicated mouse buttons.
And the final point, you can not get this model with an AMD. It only comes with I5.
I paid just over £800 so just over $1000...
And I'm very happy with the video editing, alone. My old, not too, shabby laptop would output videos at about 1 minute per every 1% rendered at 720p @ 30fps.
This will do 1% every 3 seconds @ 1080p 60fps... And that's while I'm watching hd vidios on YT Chrome... lol

It does render some windows kind of weird though, some windows have blurry text compared to everything around them... Not sure what that's about - but I'm sure I can tweak it.That's my only "complaint" if you can call it that. Oh and Windows 10 is an actual complaint, but there's no helping that, unfortunately.
Quick update: fixed the weird rendering issue by just changing an integer in the registry. It's a Windows issue, not hardware.

i bought this laptop a few months ago and then on amazon i buy one 16gb ddr4 ram and 1 seagate 1tb hdd. put those in and this laptop is amazing... 24gb ram, 1tb hdd, 256gb ssd. the laptop costed me $600 and the 2 things like around $100. so for $700 thats not a bad laptop. does get a little hot but nothing too major i also bought a cooling pad with adjustable fan speed so heat is no problem. Highly recommend it for anyone with a $700 budget.

If you put it on a desk make sure you clean under the laptop regularly, you dont want any dust getting in the fan bearings causing a fan failure

@@zetoski610 cs:go is not a big game, it was made in 2012 and you can run it on a trash laptop. I can run CS:GO at max settings 80fps. Fortnite is around 60fps at high settings and Rainbow Six Seige 60fps at medium settings

I have the 1650 model and to be honest with you I kind of regret getting it but it will play games really well but at the cost of being really loud if you’re playing a new game. And coming out factory wasn’t able to do what I wanted it to do so I had to upgrade the RAM but that’s not really a big deal

There is a VITAL point that i didnt expect you to skip it. Im an student and i've been with this laptop (nitro 5) for more than 3 months and need to say that for the price and what you get inside is a good option, i would recomend it if you wanna play games at a decent quality and work with it. Im an student and i take this laptop to college so i need some battery life and something not too heavy and there Acer Nitro 5 got a point. Nonetheless here comes the big BUT and is the fact that Acer uses TERRIBLE thermal pastes so as soon as you buy it, change it. In addition we got a second problem and is the distribution and where componentents are setted up. Doesnt matter how hard you clean it (i unmounted entirely in order to clean it), what thermal paste you use (i use Artic Silver 5) it will keeps a maximum of 97ºC what is INSANE. Of course this temperature is not with every game, i have had this problem so long with GTA V and Watchdogs and TW3 near to 85 but do not reach it.
if you search "Acer nitro 5 heat" you will see the problem at every forum
Look at 7:00 and how the pipes are setted. There you will possibly find a why. Ironically my gpu is cool as fuck, ir hardly reach 80ºC even if i pull the crap of it. Need to say that i got my laptop in a high place, with nothing obstruying the air and with the total air flow possible. Is a wonderful laptop with a terrible inside design. May with this i've helped someone so, if you got any question here you got me.
Do you experience thermal throttling? If so, then I might still buy dell g5 with last year's specs but it has a lot better cooling design.
@@tmasterix513 sorry for this late answer aaand nope, i do not experience thermal throttling. Even if it gets that hot i do not feel a lose of fps or performance in general. But i've found a solution about this hot temperatures, and its working for me without a noticeable power lose. And it's with undervolt. I make it run to 3.4 max (may up or down) and it do not get ovsr 85 degrees. Another thing i do is juts turning off the turbo boost with a 99% performance and hardly surpass 80-85 degrees and need to say that i did not experience ANY fps drop while playing TW3. It went as smoothy as always and i got impressdd
@@yack6182 Oh, well I got Dell G5 yesterday. It's awesome and has enough power for my use (I5 8300h + gtx 1050ti). It also never gets over 60-70 degrees thx to it's cooling design. Only downside is the screen, I've definetly seen better ones. Sucks that acer is still using the same cooling design from last year's nitro. 2018 Nitro was 650€ in our country with the same I5 8300h + gtx 1050ti but didin't buy it when I saw how it looks inside. Also my dell has a lot better overall design and features like SD card slot, fingerprint reader and backlit keyboard (not edgy gaming-red). Also my old laptop was dell aswell and it's very old but still works perfectly. Oh, and Dell G5 was 779€ here. But thx from the answer :)

Comparing the Acer that I got in 2018, it's quite sad compared to the current models. Got a 950m and an i5-7200U. The Nitro 5 is a super good value now I think.

For $700 (Best Buy price matched with BJs) I got the Acer Nitro 5 with an i5-9300, GTX 1650, 8GB RAM, 128 SSD, 1TB HDD. Phenomenal bang for your buck, I highly recommend. I love being able to play ATS, Euro Truck, and all the amazing strategy games I’ve missed out on as a console player.

@@666emam I have a handful of channels I watch on a daily basis and a bunch of channels I watch when I get tired of the main ones or are up to date with the main ones. I probelly have around 15 total channels that i cycle around so its not that big of a deal for me.
If you have over 150 channels you watch on a regular basis, then you might have a problem lol. I would be more afraid of that overflowing my email with all the notifications constantly going off. I'm terrible at keeping my email up to date so that would be a major problem for me lol!

not to be rude but its only 500 yeah its alot but it only took me a month and two weeks to get a 1000 dollar one and i make like 5 dollars more than the mimium wage
I got the Acer Nitro 5 (2020), I like it a lot, but there is a con. It's battery life is around 2 hours and at most 2 and a half hours. It doesn't matter if you lower lights, sounds, or display. It won't last long. That is it's only con though.

Still rocking a Y5070, only with shadow of War and other modern AAA titles do I get issues, just can't stand partserve here in south Africa for warranty, which means it was sadly my last Lenovo.
In Europe and US I hear they have great support.

acer helios 300 is the best one for the price with 1660ti in 2019.
Zephyrus G has a 1660ti and has much better cooling and battery life + it's thin/light and looks much better than the Helios. Helios has better performance but if weight and thermals is a important factor then Zephyrus is better.

@@Mobiltelekomnet Thermals on Helios are not even close to the Zephyrus lineup. I own a Zephyrus and my friend owns a Helios so I have checked Thermal performance on both laptops.
@Federal Republic of Aurelia I haven't bought the Zephyrus yet. I borrowed one from a friend to use for a couple of days and see how much I like it. I never purchase electronics before trying. I tested the Zephyrus G, Helios 300 2019, Legion y540 and the Omen 15t with i5+ 1660ti. Zephyrus was the lightest and the cleanest looking as compared to the rest (only one comparable here was the Y540) and the Helios had the best performance. But Zephyrus was Lighter and definitely had better Thermals, and I need to use this in class occasionally so I did not want a gamery look or RGB that the Helios and Omen had. So I decided that it's between the Zephyrus and the Y540 and since the Zephyrus has a better Battery and lower power consuming 35 TDP Ryzen 7, I have decided to get the Zephyrus. I haven't purchased it yet, but for my use case scenario, it is the best laptop. If you just want the best performance then I admit Helios and Omen have better performance,
so if you just want the best performance laptop you should buy a Helios 300. But in the Thin & Light Department, The Zephyrus series is second only to Razer, which is out of my budget 😂
The new asus tuf with ryzen 7 3750H and gtx 1660 ti is also a very good option

I'm going to update. After a week my SSD has failed. Browsing through Windows and opening folders takes ages. I tried loading up Tomb Raider and it took 8 minutes to load the game. (But when it does I get an average 126fps on ultra settings).
After running a few tests it seems my SSD is only R/W @ 27mbs (27 was the max using Crystal, other tests were around the 24 mark) . Compared to the Hybrid 1T that's installed that gives me 173mbs R/W speeds. And, my standard, cheapest on Amazon, WD 4T external HDD that gives me 115mbs R/W speeds...
I've got in touch with Acer. I'll let you know if they ever get back to me.
Make sure you are connected to an outlet, even the best gaming laptops run hilariously slow without being connected to power
@@YtDay I fixed it now. It was my 1tb Hybred drive was slowing down my SSD for some reason. I now have a 2nd SSD installed instead so the 500GB boot drive and and extra 1tb storage drive. So it's all great now.
