*sigh* Yes, BIOS modding is a thing, and when you're building the entire motherboard in-house including its BIOS, it's not even a stretch to think you can just add NVMe support to the BIOS (EFI ROM, pedantry, etc). No, it's not SATA. It's PCIe. It's not difficult. Those little PCIe-to-m.2 adapter cards are awesome, and you can boot them by either inserting an EFI module into the ROM (win-raid dotcom has info), or by using the DUET EFI boot loader on a (secondary) SATA hard drive or permanent-fixture USB stick, which has support for NVMe booting. There's a whole host of ways to get this done on any platform you want. I'm over here booting NVMe on a Core 2 Duo, ok? Not kidding.

I love the "Reduce, Re-use, Recycle" aspect of these mobos. It's so refreshing in a throw away society. I also love the attitude of "Oh you aren't supposed to do this? You say you can't do this? Whatever, we did it anyway. And it works. Haters gonna hate."
Wish this was the norm. There is a legislation for right to repair for users. If this passes, it will be the first step to abolishing the built-in expiry dates into electronics.
I literally just replaced my old HEDT workstation (X79 / i73930k) with a ryzen rig (yesterday!) . I Bought it back in 2013 and overclocked it from day one....and still works perfectly! It will continue its life as a media center and a retro gaming rig (mame, 8bit/16bit emulators).
If they were reusing old motherboards I would say yes. But they're making new boards with old chips... how much material is used to create a few chips, compared to a giant circuit board with metal connectors all over? It might be a good way to save *money* however.
linus reviewed a mobo that had support for like three generations of intel chip iirc on a chipset that "officially" didn't support those chips. I think it was titled intel lied or something.
Yup. And even on an older server motherboard (C602/604 chipset) you can boot from NVMe. Edit the UEFI if you're ballsy, find a 950 PRO or Plextor M8 if you just want it to work out of the box.
Brian Yurkanin except he kinda touched on that later in the video when he did some quick Craigslist checking. so he didn't entirely miss the point. he just didn't come to the budget conclusion until later on.
Also giving new life to your cpu after the old X79 board dies.. Damn things are pricey even used, I saw something comparable (no name brand) on new egg so their out there for sure!
@@sheik124 I am still getting by just fine with my P9X79 WS, which I originally bought because at the time it was one of Linus's favorite boards, when he was still reviewing mobos; the video is still on here somewhere. After some research I was able to find some custom BIOSs for that board that enabled NVMe boot support, and it worked like a charm. With 7 PCI-E full length slots the expandability is great. Right now I mostly rely on single thread performance so I'm using a 4820k OC'd to 4.5 Ghz but the same socket will accept up to a 12 core Xeon. Before I went with the BIOS flash I just used an M.2 SATA drive which has the same overall speeds but far better IOPS, so that's an option. The problem is the GOOD X79 boards and CPUs are not actually cheap (if you want the extreme editions or the high core count Xeons they are as much as a modern CPU), and you are really better off buying new. I spent $300 on my P9X79 and that was only a few years ago, only because I couldn't afford a complete upgrade for a workstation board. Was the day I realized just how important not skimping on your mobo is if you're a serious power user. So I wouldn't really suggest this for someone building a new rig, but X79 is still a super powerful platform for the right uses and just because it's nearly 10 year old hardware doesn't mean it still can't pack some serious power. They make absolutely fantastic server platforms too, great way to re-use your old hardware.
Brazilian here, theres a lot of people importing these bizarre mobos and processors from Aliexpress. I even saw a dual chip mobo, very cheap. Saw a lot of russians reviews in aliexpress too. Basically two reasons: 1 - As Linus said: cheap option. 2 - Brazilians custom dont tax anything under 100 USD, so, brazilians import everything separately.
even though im not brazilian i can confirm this, its better to just directly import them from aliexpress instead of buying locally because they inflate the price like 1.5-2x
@sol badguy well the logic behind it is ppl that buy these have limited budget and isnt likely to upgrade any time soon (in the time span of 3 years or so which currently released platform will be obsolete anyway), its better in their mind to buy an older near TOTL platform for cheap rather than new but entry level for the same price
@sol badguy Sandy supported sse 4.2, mostly AMD processors were behind on instruction sets, the phenom II notable for being the most "modern" cpu to suffer from patchy game support.
Titan X's are cheap as hell now. You can pick them up for £200, the low price of 1080 TI has killed the Titan X as a GPU platform. It is best for workstations on graphics, CAD etc. If you have £600 to build a Workstation a second hand TITAN X is a solid choice
For sure! Even in 2021, having access to new-ish legacy boards like x79 makes getting cheapo 3rd and 4th gen Intel extreme cpus in ebay a fantastic option for budget servers, render boxes, overkill nas setups, plex, etc.
Doesn't seem legit, but I gotta admit, if they're recycling old/used computer parts and bundling them together for sale to people in poorer nations, it's not actually a bad idea and a win win for everyone.

...Tbh nearly every parts of a pc are directly coming from a chinese factory but the component in it might not, including this used X79 chipset. Which mean it's hard to decide what can be called a chinese part and what can not.
Actually, in China we use Xeon E5 and ECC REG memory on boards like that. That's what the boards are used for, it's just cheap and high performance. There are even many 2011 boards with H61 or B75 Chipset inside. Linus really should test them out. In South America they should also doing like that, nobody uses i7 on it. Maybe that's the only board who have experienced that high-grade treatment XD.
So here in Brazil, i know so many people who use a X99 motherboard and a Xeon, and every one buys it from Aliexpress, and if you have a new Ryzen or a new Intel Core, it's pretty much over the top, because a upgrade with a Intel Core i7 8800k for example with 16gbs of memory, costs double then a X99 motherboard with a Xeon V3 and 16gbs of ddr4 memory
These boards are meant for the surplus of Xeon processors that have entered the market through depreciating server hardware from around 2012. You should've paired it with the Xeon 2690 or 1650v2 which are both sub-$150. This way you also get access to cheaper used ECC RAM.
"I don't know why they wouldn't be upfront about that" Well I think the language barrier, and possibly technical knowledge, has something to do with that.

That's how most of the Chinese reps are, especially the females. You're tying to buy a car and ask them to tell you about the car "uhhhh yes, this car, this door, this color, this drive long long distance."
Dear Linus, Here's Kenny again, you're always my favorite TECH channel, but the truth is you really need to study more about Chinese TECH culture and products, Just like last time I replied on the onda h310 Mb about intel lied. I'm working with these motherboard almost every day to make budget build for my costumers in HK, I know almost everything about them First of all, it's not anything new to see m.2 NVMe support on old CPU and motherboard, actually since sandy bridge, every single CPU that has direct access between PCIe lanes and CPU, a very little BIOS modification can make perfect support on NVMe, especially x79/ x99, these CPUs had 40+ PCIe lanes directly from the CPU, they can even support NVMe raid0, I'll talk about this later. Second, In China, these x79 / x58 motherboard are even more common then mainstream MB and CPU, you're paying a very very extreme price for these MB due to the area you're in, the very best china x79 motherboard in HK and China just cost less than $70 USD, they have perfect support on NVMe/ quad channel 1866 ddr3 (ecc reg available for XEON CPUs) / overclocking ability on unlocked CPUs (e.g 3930k/4960x/e5 1650v2/e5 1680v2....) Third, these are meant to use with e5 XEONs and ecc reg RAM to make budget gaming builds, instead of i7s. PC builder like me in HK and China can build a high quality 4k gaming rig with these MB within $800usd, e.g E5 1680v2 overclocked MB like this one 8gx4 ecc reg 1866 ddr3 Vega64 / GTX 1080 NVMe ssd And all other HW for a rig...... Finally back to the NVMe support, you're the greatest LINUS, you should know how a PCIe m.2 ssd works, it has almost nothing to do with the motherboard if you have direct PCIe lanes to your CPU, architecture like a x79 CPU has all the PCIe lanes you'll ever need, these manufacturer just pre-moded their BIOS to made it done, that's nothing really to be Surprised about, you're already very lucky to work with this model, it built with a real x79 chipset, most of the Chinese "x79" MB are built with modified sandy bridge/ ivy bridge chipset (e.g h61/b75/q67/c202...Etc), these Mb can't support overclocking and some of them will stuck with 1600mhz ddr3 although you have a e5 v2 CPU, you really should work a little harder to dig more into these Chinese TECH, there are much more for you to be amazed, I'll leave a little rabbit hole here to let you guys to dig into, let's just say, PC builder like me can build an 8 core 16 threads higher frequency gaming rig with these MB and e5 CPUs that can play PUBG over 100 fps high settings 1080p within the budget $300usd... You're always my best inspiration, I'll always love you all, thanks LINUS and all those made LTT the greatest TECH channel ever!
Wait one of the best X79 in China only cost $70? Is there any good board in AliExpress or Alibaba that we (non Chinese) can buy? @@RatchetRorschach the main focus of this kind of hardware is build cheap gaming platform that goes along some mid and mid high graphic cards.. in most cases, higher core count doesnt affect much the performance in this situation, but the cpu frequency. so if the focus is gaming, better get, for instance, a 4 core 3.7ghz than a 8 core 2.6 ghz. but if you use some specific multi threaded applications than could get some benefits going with 8, 10 or even 12 cores.

I got a board manufactured by these guys about a year ago back when DDR4 was still way too expensive. It's pretty good, actually. The highest clock speed supported on them normally is 3.9ghz but if you flash a custom bios you can get them a bit higher. Keep in mind that there's no voltage adjustment so obviously these boards aren't designed for extreme overclocking, but you can get a nice bump out of them.
there are actually better ones that do have full quad channel support and ram and cpu overclocking. and 2 m.2 slots, one for boot drive, one for wifi/bluetooth.
Most likely he havent. And he bought this board at CES in January. It has just been sitting around, as this is not a type of video where its really important when its showed. Im using a Ebay motherboard similar to this got it for $80, and a Xeon E5-2630, with 16gb ddr3 ecc ram! These builds are literally budget beast! running it with a budget used GTX 1070 also !
I think Linus gets a bit jaded because he is constantly around not just the latest consumer hardware, but future engineering samples and stuff that outperforms anything X79 could ever do by leaps and bounds, and he does not really have price constraints. In the past he made a video about the P9X79 board from Asus being his favorite board yet, but when the next, faster platform is right around the corner and it's your JOB to buy it and review it, that doesn't last long. Eventually I'll will be getting a 12 core Xeon and replace my server with this board, but for now, as you say, it's powerful enough to play the latest games at high or better settings (w/ RTX 2070, I sometimes do get CPU bottlenecking of course) at very high resolutions with all the background tasks I usually have going. The CPUs on the platform have extremely good OC capabilities and you can run some of them stable at clocks up to 4.7 Ghz. Based on benchmarks my 4820k is at least as good as a 6700K and close to a stock 7700K, even if it does suck up more power and put off more heat. For single threaded stuff there is very little performance change for the newer CPUs, as clock speeds haven't been going up.
As a chinese. I have played the renew x79 for a long time. When it first appear, the stable of the system is trash. But after iterating many times, the situation is getting better and better. Now it could run as server... There are many kind of "x79" motherboard. They use different southern bridge chipsets, I even heard that they use C61 as the replacement of x79 chipset.
I'm still running an i7-3930K OC'd to 4.5 Ghz as my daily driver for software development and gaming. x79 is / was a beast. Shame they long since stopped supporting it with drivers.

That was actually a pretty stupid quote you used....
I love the "Reduce, Re-use, Recycle" aspect of these mobos. It's so refreshing in a throw away society. I also love the attitude of "Oh you aren't supposed to do this? You say you can't do this? Whatever, we did it anyway. And it works. Haters gonna hate."
Makes me wanna build and resell cheap gaming PCs with used parts, these poor chips in dusty warehouses need a home~

Totally missing the point of these boards is to use the 6-10 core cheap Xeons.

Cheap Xeons AND DDR3 ECC RAMs,since they are cheap too,and these X79 usually takes them since they were server boards that uses ECC.
Brazilian here, theres a lot of people importing these bizarre mobos and processors from Aliexpress. I even saw a dual chip mobo, very cheap.
Saw a lot of russians reviews in aliexpress too.

2 - Brazilians custom dont tax anything under 100 USD, so, brazilians import everything separately.
even though im not brazilian i can confirm this, its better to just directly import them from aliexpress instead of buying locally because they inflate the price like 1.5-2x
@sol badguy but 6 cores & 12 threads for a total of more or less $100 is a good deal
@sol badguy well the logic behind it is ppl that buy these have limited budget and isnt likely to upgrade any time soon (in the time span of 3 years or so which currently released platform will be obsolete anyway),
its better in their mind to buy an older near TOTL platform for cheap rather than new but entry level for the same price
@sol badguy Sandy supported sse 4.2, mostly AMD processors were behind on instruction sets, the phenom II notable for being the most "modern" cpu to suffer from patchy game support.
The dual cpu ones must really be c602's or something rather than x79. AFAIK the x79 chipset doesn't support QPI for multi cpu support

Dear Linus,
Here's Kenny again, you're always my favorite TECH channel, but the truth is you really need to study more about Chinese TECH culture and products,
Just like last time I replied on the onda h310 Mb about intel lied.
I'm working with these motherboard almost every day to make budget build for my costumers in HK, I know almost everything about them
First of all, it's not anything new to see m.2 NVMe support on old CPU and motherboard, actually since sandy bridge, every single CPU that has direct access between PCIe lanes and CPU, a very little BIOS modification can make perfect support on NVMe, especially x79/ x99, these CPUs had 40+ PCIe lanes directly from the CPU, they can even support NVMe raid0, I'll talk about this later.
Second, In China, these x79 / x58 motherboard are even more common then mainstream MB and CPU, you're paying a very very extreme price for these MB due to the area you're in, the very best china x79 motherboard in HK and China just cost less than $70 USD, they have perfect support on NVMe/ quad channel 1866 ddr3 (ecc reg available for XEON CPUs) / overclocking ability on unlocked CPUs (e.g 3930k/4960x/e5 1650v2/e5 1680v2....)
Third, these are meant to use with e5 XEONs and ecc reg RAM to make budget gaming builds, instead of i7s. PC builder like me in HK and China can build a high quality 4k gaming rig with these MB within $800usd,
e.g
E5 1680v2 overclocked
MB like this one
8gx4 ecc reg 1866 ddr3
Vega64 / GTX 1080
NVMe ssd
And all other HW for a rig......
Finally back to the NVMe support, you're the greatest LINUS, you should know how a PCIe m.2 ssd works, it has almost nothing to do with the motherboard if you have direct PCIe lanes to your CPU, architecture like a x79 CPU has all the PCIe lanes you'll ever need, these manufacturer just pre-moded their BIOS to made it done, that's nothing really to be Surprised about, you're already very lucky to work with this model, it built with a real x79 chipset, most of the Chinese "x79" MB are built with modified sandy bridge/ ivy bridge chipset (e.g h61/b75/q67/c202...Etc), these Mb can't support overclocking and some of them will stuck with 1600mhz ddr3 although you have a e5 v2 CPU,
you really should work a little harder to dig more into these Chinese TECH, there are much more for you to be amazed, I'll leave a little rabbit hole here to let you guys to dig into, let's just say, PC builder like me can build an 8 core 16 threads higher frequency gaming rig with these MB and e5 CPUs that can play PUBG over 100 fps high settings 1080p within the budget $300usd...
You're always my best inspiration, I'll always love you all, thanks LINUS and all those made LTT the greatest TECH channel ever!
Wait one of the best X79 in China only cost $70? Is there any good board in AliExpress or Alibaba that we (non Chinese) can buy? I want to build a E5 1000/2000 overclocked system with these Chinese X79 boards but I don't know which one has the best or at least decent VRM to handle overclocked E5-1650 for example. Would be great if you can show us a which mobo has a decent VRM.

@@NaoVII I sometimes wonder why we don't get more companies like Huawei, which take parts built in China, pack them together and sell them under one big brand to the rest of the world, but do that for something else than phones. Laptops and all-in-one PCs would be a good example of what could make them popular. All you have to do to make them popular is to give the list of components which would be around as powerful as the thing you're trying to sell, as well as how much money people would save by buying the already-built product from you than buying all the parts themselves.

Yup. The value old Xeons can offer is extremely hard to beat. I have more X79, X58, C602 and 5520 Chipset systems a single Person can ever need but in total i probably still spent less than the average Gaming PC costs.

Indeed, but at least they commit it right from the... middle.^^

I guess she might be referring to 4 slots there, do they come in 4 or 8 btw?
4 slots usually 2 channel, CMIIW. If you want 4 channel (8 slots), go hunt an msi, gigabyte or asus x79. Go get a asus rampage if you could
@@rkadi6540 a lot of chinese mb supports quad channel with x79
there are actually better ones that do have full quad channel support and ram and cpu overclocking. and 2 m.2 slots, one for boot drive, one for wifi/bluetooth.
