    I recently bought the Canon EOS RP, my first FF camera, and I am very happy with it, I also love the colors, sometimes I don't even need to edit my pictures.
    I fully agree with your review, on the RP there are two more things I don't like :
    It's sad that the shutter doesn't close on the RP like on the R (5:15), and the feature presented at 5:45 does not exist on the RP, but there's focus peaking (highlights on contrasting edges)

    I brought EOS R in March, 2022 and I can charge batteries by USB connecting to computer. You need very good USB cable only 3 ft long. Longer cable drops the voltage at the end.

    Doubt Canon will make the EOS R smaller in the future, and personally I think the size is perfect, or could be a hint bigger. Consider people still add grips for more to hold ... and the RP can be the tiny model for people with tiny hands.

    RIght now, I am charging my Eos R via the USB port, which is plugged into my computer's USB-C port. Works like a champ without needing to use Canon's expensive USB charger. It also works with my relatively inexpensive Anker PowerPort II wall charger. I think, when I first bought the camera back in Nov 2018, on firmware 1.0, it didn't do this. But since Firmware 1.1, it definitely charges via USB without the Canon USB adapter. EDIT: the little battery icon on the top screen now says full after being charged from my computer's USB-C port.

    I can't believe the timing. I ordered a Canon EOS R so I could dip my toes in the water of the mirrorless world. It arrived last night! I went with the EOS R since I am already a Canon shooter (7D and 5D Mark II) and discovered that I could still use EF lenses with this camera. The 5D Mark IV sensor and the compatibility with my other Canon gear (right down to the batteries) made it a relatively easy decision for me.

      @@christopherfrost Thanks! I'm trying to figure out how I want to customize the buttons/settings. My 7D and 5D2 are set up pretty much the same way and I have to somehow translate that to the R. Still odd to me coming from a DSLR that the back display turns on when my face is off the viewfinder, wish there was a dedicated button to turn that on/off. So far I think I'll like the camera once I get used to it. Thanks for posting your reviews!

    Shot video with this camera for 5 weeks, and I love it. The lack of IBIS I manage to come around, and the crop will be fixed with the R2 in a couple of years. As you say yourself, the results is the best out there compared to other cameras with more specs. And that's the most important. The USB charging works if I plug in my EOS R into my laptop's USB-C port or with my Anker PowerCore 20100 battery pack by using its Power Delivery USB-C port. You don't need the official Canon adapter as long as you plug the EOS R direcly into a USB-C port that can deliver enough power.

    @toooner 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Newbie question. I was under the impression that if you're shooting RAW then you didn't need to worry about WB adjustment on camera. If adjusting WB on camera is so important then I'm guessing it can't always be adjusted satisfactorily in post processing?

    • @rclutsam2112
      @rclutsam2112 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's really a personal preference. The philosophy of many shooters is to "get it right in camera", and therefore lessen the load in post, while many others subscribe to the "fix it in post" philosophy. There are pros and cons to doing it either way. For example, AWB will attempt to correct color cast based on what the sensor sees. That's not ideal when shooting a sunrise, or sunset. Setting your WB for a particular scene will give you consistency in color across all of your shots, where shooting in AWB can result in inconsistent color due to changes in focal length and lighting. As you stated, when shooting in RAW, all the color data captured by your camera is retained, therefore can be corrected in post. Again, it is personal preference. IMO, and in order to completely master and understand your camera, it should be learned regardless of whether you use it or not.

    Mine is Canon's M6, and I also found it comfy to set Whithe Balance by rubbing Quick control Dial with my thumb.
    It's almost a year now.
    But I'm sure that Canon's a bit off when they place buttons on their cameras time to time.
    I'd like to expect to the next model would let me control functions more to my left hand.
    And maybe the Power Switch around to my right thumb or right index finger would work comfy for me.
    Also I'm not quite used to back side control dial yet, doesn't feel comfy to reach my thumb there.
    So I cannot tell whether it was good move or not to took that dial outta there.
    I'm just using it to adjust shutter speed and ISO value.

    You don't need a bulky charger to charge EOS R, all you need is a charger that supports PD (should be common nowadays) and is able to out put 9V 3A. I read some people successfully charge their EOS R using that charger of the iPad Pro 11". However, you do really need a genuine LP-E6N battery.

    I've heard that the R series support EF-S lenses through some kind of compatibility mode, but no review that I've seen has gone into detail as to the ramifications of this. It would be nice to see an in-depth video on the use of Canon EFS lenses and on crop-factor EF lenses from third parties when used with the adapter, including if there are any issues with still picture or video resolution, and how things like the 4K crop factor might be affected.
    Thank you for making videos about the camera and photography equipment rather than about yourself, by the way. The lack of narcissism is very much appreciated.

    all agree aside from the size. The main complaint many have about sony cameras is its handeling. While it makes sense for consumer grade cameras to be more compact, professional level cameras should really be design for the best handeling.

    Oh I do hope they don't make their higher end cameras smaller. That's the primary reason I found the Sony A7III to be completely unusable for me was due to the small and uncomfortable grip. I do enjoy the classic feeling of DSLR's, so I find the EOS R's weight and size to be quite good.

    I have watched nearly all your videos of your Canon lenses with the full frame Canon 6D camera, the APS-C Canon 60D and the older Canon 500D. So I guess that you have many Canon lenses and the choice of the Canon EOS R is reasonable.
    What I don't like with EOS R is that it doesn't support the EF-M lenses. Probably the EF-M mount wasn't designed with full frame compatibility. E-mount and L-mount for mirrorless cameras was designed better and can use both APS-C and full frame native lenses.
    Also the Canon EOS R has a long flange distance and can't accept other manual or autofocus lenses for mirrorless cameras.
    The Nikon Z mount cameras had the advantage with a very short 16mm flange distance. With an adapter the Nixon Z mount cameras can accept manual focus lenses suitable for mirrorless cameras with longer flange distance. For example E mount lenses (18mm), L mount lenses (20mm), Micro 4/3 lenses (19.25), EF-M lenses (18mm), X mount lenses (17.7mm), NX mount lenses (25.5mm) or even the RF mount lenses (20mm). That is really impressive.
    Actually just a few day ago Techart company has officially announced an AUTOFOCUS Z mount to E mount adapter. Yes an AUTOFOCUS adapter which permits native Sony autofocus e-mount lenses on the Nikon Z mount mirrorless cameras.
    Just check the TH-cam video for the Techart Pro TH-cam channel with the title: Introduction to Techart Sony E - Nikon Z Autofocus Adapter (TZE-01).
    According to the Techart website the Techart Sony E - Nikon Z Autofocus Adapter (TZE-01) will be available late June for 249 US$.
    Techart is already well known for allowing autofocus to the Leica manual focus M mount lenses on e-mount cameras. The Techart PRO LM-EA7 Leica M Mount Lens to Sony E-Mount Camera Autofocus Adapter is very innovative but a little expensive.

    Hey Chris! Congrats on the new camera! I got an EOS R a month ago and was surprised about the USB charging as well, though I've found a nice solution!
    I ordered a multi USB charger for my phone and other tech gadgets, has QuickCharge 3.0 for my phone, 3 other usb ports, and most importantly - a USB C port with PD (Power Delivery), which means the EOS R could be charged with it. This means that when I'm at home and when I travel, I carry only one charger with me for all my devices, including for the camera. Just note that only LPE6N batteries are supported for USB-C charging, it doesn't work with the older LPE6 batteries.
    Not sure if links are allowed here so the charger is called (on Amazon US):

      Resolution matters to me - I love landscape and wildlife photography, so being able to crop in to a high resolution image is very useful for me. If you're happy with the size and weight, then that's cool, that's up to you - personally I'd prefer something a bit lighter

    Hi Chris, i like your videos so much! It is a very interesting video. I have a Canon 6d i like it but the auto focus system is a little bit old. I'm planning to by a new camera for next year and a stay with the canon. What do you think which is the good choice 5d mkIII or Mk IV(much expensive OK, i may not need it) or the R? Mostly I use for wedding and event photography. I used with new L EF lenses. Overall: its worth to change 6d for R against 5d series - for work? Thanks for your answer!

    I really don't get the size complaints, it's nice and neat and ergonomically sound, unlike Sony's toy-like cameras. It's a meaningless 'con' because it's more personal preference.

    • @MegaNardman
      @MegaNardman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So is 'ergonomically sound' and 'toy-like,' as well as Frost's preference of Canon colors (vs the old Sony colors). A lot of pros and cons are subjective; if you disagree, that's great, but it doesn't invalidate his list.

    • @Cagey7531
      @Cagey7531 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MegaNardman I'm not the one doing the mini review though. Every other reviewer who's touched the R said it was possibly the most comfortable ML camera out there, and every where you look you'll see people moan about the shit ergonomics of Sony cameras. Weird that he's the only one complaining. I know Sony fanboys love to get butt hurt about everything related to their cameras as if they owned shares, but it's a fact, Sony's cameras are ugly and uncomfortable. They're not popular for those reasons, it's the output.

      The A7r2 is significantly cheaper than the R, that means at least $500 cheaper in my locas dealerships. My local Sony dealership sells the R3 for $50 dollars more than the canon selling the EOS R, which would make them straight competitors, and the Sony win here is undeniable.

    Hi - you have some Telelenses for the EF-Mount -> can you do a little test with an Adapter for this cam ..?? Why:
    I have some extreme nice Telelenses for Canon and use this at a Sony A7RIII - the AF is "ok" but at my EOS 1DX Mark II the EF ist faster (at a A9 the AF is slow, too) - so - i hope the new EOS R is better^^.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The autofocus using the EF-RF mount adaptor should be pretty much as good as you can get no matter what lens you can put on it - better than the performance using a Sony camera and adaptor

    Had the RP and returned it. Sensor way too noisy for a new camera. My M50 is cleaner at 100iso. The R is a much better camera.
    I ended up going with the A7III and absolutely love it. Way better than my last A7RII. Much better colors.
    I switched to Capture One and love the colors I get with it. Amazing program and never thought I would ever get away from Lightroom.
    I take pics of cars and the Sony is my favorite. Accurate colors. I would have went for the R if I shot portraits.
    I had the Fuji XT3 and hated the colors in raw. No matter which program I used, they were so far off. Fun camera though.

  • @Skapo
    @Skapo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I personally prefer the massively better speced (insert any other major brand's competing camera). Canon uses their color science as a goddamn crutch to not upgrade anything else. You didn't do it in this review but I swear it is ridiculous the number of times that I have heard some reviewer talking about "It doesn't matter the specs of a camera. It matters what you do with it." as an excuse for Canon's constant flipping of their fingers at anyone who invests in their ecosystem.

    I really like the EOS R, i don't think it's focusing is as good as the A7iii though. Don't really have a problem with the cameras size, I still have a 7D that I use ocassionaly for wildlife photography and it dwarfs my EOS R despite being an APS-C camera!
