Engineers should have to disassemble and re-assemble their creations to see why they don't design things certain ways. It's funny how when I go to sell anything on the internet, people want to offer 50% of the price, but when I go to buy things, no one wants to come down 50%. I don't even respond to those people any more.
Sadly when it comes to motorbikes, quad bikes, cars ect they are now designed so you choose not to work on them at home and take it to a garage/dealership instead
As a nearly gratuated engineer, unfortunately we don’t get to design things based just on how easy they are to take apart and put back together. There’s also looks, size, weight, durability, cost to manufacture etc. If the average customer wanted something that’s easy to disassemble then that’s exactly what companies would still make, because at the end of the day the companies just want to make money.

First off, I love this channel! You do a great job of explaining and videoing what you are doing .I have a question, you seam to rev the throttle a LOT, after a major rebuild , Is this a “ Break in” technology or something else ( you just like that sound?) . It seams a bit excessive on a four stroke engine and harsh on a fresh rebuild.
You had one of these when you were doing videos at your parents house a few years ago I think because you did a top speed run on one I think but it definitely looks and sounds amazing and fast great job
the stripped out hex head in the crankshaft plug ;..grind a large slot in it with a die grinder and use a large flat blade screw driver to remove it..!
I have watched a lot of your videos in the last month or so and I'm impressed with your hard graft to get these machines up and running again, and you would put a lot of so called mechanics to shame bud, well done from Scotland 🏴🏴🏴

Next time you do valves on a head like this, you always lap them! It’s doesn’t take much, just some compound and spin with your hands with lap tool. When your down clean everything, put the valves & springs in, put the spark plug in backwards & tighten it. Pour a little water in where the valves are seated & spray a little compressed air into the intake & exhaust ports. If you see no bubbles or a worse leak coming through the water, you know they’re seated properly! Never bolt a head down without checking. No sense on doing it twice….✌🏻🏁
I am old so I am not buying an atv- but riding with your camera attached made me feel like I was right there with you, awesome! How do you feel about about jumping over barrels on a motorcycle? : )
This is probably five years ago. You made this video but again I’m just having a drink here talking to myself lol I learned something new on every video for sure and not in a negative way
I've always thought Hondas were engineering marvels. You showed that they are not what they used to be. Curious, why are the rings so stiff? It's not a compressed engine. Great video you are so fun to listen to. BTW, I always take the feeler out when I tighten so I don t flatten it...
For stripped allen bolts use a torx bit just big enough that it's tight hammer it in with firm stedy taps as the alloy may crack,be careful you will probably only get one chance at it, slowly an firmly apply pressure as i said be careful, its advisable to replace the part removed, don't reuse any stripped parts. I have to be clear about these alloy casting they can be very brittle or soft, be careful, this could be very costly if done wrong, if your not sure have some one that knows what they're doing do this job. I had a lot of success with this. It's not a bad thing that you turned it over for so long it allowed oil to get to the top end before it fired up, I've seen guys take the plug out and turned it over for a wee while to get oil circulation before setting the plug in and firing up an engine, it sounds good tho.
I love your videos. I envy the way you have the patience of a monk. I was wondering if the valves you got for it are better quality aftermarket ones? Im from the great white north and do a bit of work on quads and such as well. Keep up the good work. Nice to see some of those classics running again.
I’m retired. I spent a crazy amount of time in school, my final degree is a Masters degree in Finance. I incurred a ridiculous amount of student loan debt but had a good career…..Now I wish I would have followed this young man’s example in tandem with with my financial career and developed the skills and knowledge this young man has. I could be having so much fun now.
Happy the quad wasn’t junk. I’m trying to learn bike mechanics. But I’m not sure about cams, and timing. You make it look so easy but putting back together doesn’t seem like something I can do, I’d love to be able to fix them like you do. I’d buy alot of cheap will not start bikes
congrats, Joe. I worried this one would be a total disaster a year or so ago. I’d consider getting to rip it out there a win, regardless of $s spent. like you said, you gained experience and knowledge…that’s priceless, IMO. cheers
That whole exercise with the starter bolt and cam chain tensioner bolt is why I bought a KTM 1290 over the Honda Africa Twin. I looked under the plastics for both and knew immediately that I didn’t want to ever work on the Honda… especially with the stupid DCT.
Well done! Very satisfying. So chime in anyone if you will but is this the same engine that was in the XR650R? Also the Dominator? Do Honda still put these in any of their models now? Also just realised thanks to 2vintage and this video the difference between a single cam and twin cam engine. I really appreciate the knowledge you share with us.
I was just watching you set the valves on the 750 when you tightened her up and pulled out the gauge you should’ve checked it again before you said it was good because she could go tight down on her and then when you pull it out the gap smaller because it’s spring loaded you might have to couple times to get the feel of it
You def. have to up the fuel delivery with the larger more open pipes. Nice job, she sounds good. On the website of the Power Commander, there should be a suggestion of settings for certain pipes. My JD Jetting tuner has a .pdf of the recommended settings. Should be the same for that unit.
Hey Joe You buy and sell a lot of machines, out of all the machines you restored, which machine was the easiest to resell and which was the hardest? Is the hovercraft up there with the hardest?
Nice work! I feel ya bud I got scammed on the 05 raptor 660 I have. Has a crack in the valve cover which was hidden to me at the time of purchase. As I’m sure you know from your raptor build you can’t just change the cover you gotta get an entire cylinder. Hate that design honestly.

Yes, I have had similar situations where customers fail to pay for a producthat I sent to them early.Because they were waiting on their next paycheck
That's what I like about your videos, you're always up for a challenge.
Another one saved ! Nice to see the final result ! You just prove that most can be salvaged in the end.
Try an impact driver , it may break free.
It's never too late!!
Great work! Once again, such an inspiring video!
i"m not a mechanic but I enjoy your videos you do such good work something I wish I knew
I’d consider getting to rip it out there a win, regardless of $s spent. like you said, you gained experience and knowledge…that’s priceless, IMO. cheers
YES !!!!!!! ust be the best feeling, ever to hear that fire right up after countless hours of waiting.
That whole exercise with the starter bolt and cam chain tensioner bolt is why I bought a KTM 1290 over the Honda Africa Twin. I looked under the plastics for both and knew immediately that I didn’t want to ever work on the Honda… especially with the stupid DCT.
Good job bro. I used to own a 700xx. Was an awesome quad.
Hope you get your money back from the douche that didn't hold up his end of the deal! Keep up the great work man! Love the channel!
Always use the box end of a wrench when tightening final valve lash...the open end with round off the set nut leading to more issues down the road.
I think the spark plug boot thing worked out right, because you should be priming the oil pump anyway.
The XR 650R was an air cooled engine. The 700 was liquid cooled.
@@97420Chris the 650L was air-cooled the 650R was liquid cooled.
Thought you might give up on this one...NEVER!!!
I was just watching you set the valves on the 750 when you tightened her up and pulled out the gauge you should’ve checked it again before you said it was good because she could go tight down on her and then when you pull it out the gap smaller because it’s spring loaded you might have to couple times to get the feel of it
So happy you got it going. Some things just take a while and you have patience.
You def. have to up the fuel delivery with the larger more open pipes. Nice job, she sounds good. On the website of the Power Commander, there should be a suggestion of settings for certain pipes. My JD Jetting tuner has a .pdf of the recommended settings. Should be the same for that unit.
Good going. For winter conditions you might want to run it a bit richer.
Great job as usual. Sounds like the motor in my Pioneer. Sorry you got scammed, a lesson for us all.
Hey Joe
You buy and sell a lot of machines, out of all the machines you restored, which machine was the easiest to resell and which was the hardest? Is the hovercraft up there with the hardest?
Nice work! I feel ya bud I got scammed on the 05 raptor 660 I have. Has a crack in the valve cover which was hidden to me at the time of purchase. As I’m sure you know from your raptor build you can’t just change the cover you gotta get an entire cylinder. Hate that design honestly.
Great Job 👍 Put some new tires & Registration on it & get out on the trails. Enjoy your work
Nice work man sounds good. Looks like it runs pretty good as well.
You need to get a plastic welder to fix the cracked fender. Best thing I’ve found. Look it up, very inexpensive.
Love these videos, unfortunate that you got scammed.
Broke my thumb years ago while endoing a jump on my old cr 500...and man doesn't it hurt these days with those thumb throttles...still not a fan of 4 wheelers. Great video though!!!
Same here. I used to be an adventurer, then I took an arrow to the knee.
He needs to open up a dealership: "2vintage Classic Powersports"
If you buy something from him make sure to buy a starter warranty!!! Haha
