You need a spark tester ..never rely on a spark plug .I was 8 yo dealing with a bad plug .hell I didn't know anything. Kicked and kicked still no spark until my brother kicked the dam thing over while I'm pulling the plug out of the boot I was electrified .learned that day never trust a spark plug ..cleaned it out tiny piece of break-in material in the dam plug .at 26 yo had it happened again but I didn't get my dumb ass fried 😂😂😂😂😂

I've been retired for a few years now, but watching these videos and realizing that an established channel can generate thousands of dollars each month has me considering starting back up. Yea getting the channel up n running is the hard part and reaching the requirements to make anything is hard. You basically need a couple vids to go viral in order to reach them requirements. Ive beed at it over a year now and have yet to earn anything because i havent reached the requirements yet. @Lee-tp2kh

I was the first owner of the 2 when I lost spark im glad to see it running good was a headache for sure 6 months or better countless hours and parts who would of thought of a ac or DC cdi box
@@starsailor49 I would debate this does not happen very often, and if it does the quad is 25 years old roughly. I would think that would be reliable and that over the years some parts may need to be replaced as normal wear and tear . Also we don’t know what the previous owners done or exposed the Cdi box to?
Get yourself a spark tester. They are like $2 and you plug them in line with the sparkplug. You can see the spark much better and it would look better in video
@@richs7362 it's a quick testing method where you don't have to pull the sparkplug out and mess with it five minutes just to see if it's sparking. If there's no spark you know where's the problem and you can investigate further.

The people who sold him this non-running 4 wheeler, after watching his fix-em-up videos, are probably really upset that they were not able to diagnose the problem correctly and buy the new relatively inexpensive CDI unit that was the thing that got it up and running again. As it turns out though, even he was stumped until one of the commenters clued him in about the CDI not being compatible with that particular 4 wheeler. That's a huge advantage for him to have the input of tens of thousands of people who watch his video. Even without his viewers' clues, he's still one hell of a mechanic.

After the previous Owner(s) unleashed the Parts Cannon all it really needed was a correct CDI and a good spark plug... A super if frustrating problem solving job!
Next step in your growth as a tech.... soldering those wiring connections and using heat shrink tube for longer lasting, waterproof electrical repairs. Something to seriously consider. Good fix and video.

One time I had a bayou 300 that wouldn’t charge, turned out the previous owners had straight up cut the plug for the voltage regulator off the harness😂

Nice job Joe! I did the top and bottom end on my son's 300ex and the ticking is still there. I think that's normal because I also did the same to his buddies raptor and it wasn't doing it. I think that's a common honda thing for that model. Machine runs great still with no issues. Ride Red!!😂
Hey mate just a heads up, TH-cam hasn’t sent notifications for the last two videos even though I have notifications turned on. Don’t know if anyone else has had the same problem but worth checking out. Also when your out at the land is there a reason you only ride on the field now, you don’t seem to use the few trails around your property anymore, donuts are fun but you can only watch so many. I miss my 300. Such a fun little quad. They do tend to click like that. I also had an issue with cdi but it was the pins in the plug going bad. Put a Bandaid on it on the trail. Fixed it at home and it never let me down again. Sorry I sold it.
I've always found it best that when it comes to things such as CDI and or Stator. You could never go wrong buying OEM. I understand if your trying to be profitable but if it's strictly your machine buy OEM electricall

Plug gap is supposed to be closed like that on the 98. This was the first year Honda got into ramps and jumping, and that closed gap gives the engine a surge to get the quad airborn. Gospel.

Worked on that 96 polaris Trailboss, barely had 20 lbs compression. Oiled it up it went to bout 50. Pulled top end, it was nasty. I pulled the right gs to check gap, they were nearly 1/8". I'm guessing they were staggeredjust right so it would pop off but wouldn't run, guy said just needed carb work, it did need that too, Junk. Thought it was funny, so I wanted to share it with you.
Never had a problem with Amazon taking returns so if you are not sure just buy several and return the ones you don't need. Doesn't matter if they have been installed or not.
I actually got a brand new spark plug for 4 stroke single Honda that was bad right from the get go. No spark. btw, the CDI was one of the first places I would go back in the 80s.

If you would please though my friend, could you show -- maybe in a "Short" on how you reinstall a carb back onto the intake? I have the hardest time putting my 2002 Polaris Sportsman 500 carb back on, without the use of a rubber mallet. Could you show us your way? Thanks in advance for something so petty, but very useful.
I have a 1990 Honda Quad that runs like new. Has lost spark twice in 34 years - both times it was the CDI Box. I even bought a factory CDI the first time and it was a faulty one.
Some Honda machines from that era have two boxes which have the same plug ins connected to the harness. One is for ignition and the other is for oil temp ect. If you get your CDI from a third party source you may end up with the wrong one. If you plug the wrong one in the wrong spot it will fry the box
They make offset rachet wrench adapters that might make the cam tension adjustment go easier. I recently discovered that watching Rainman Ray's TH-cam channel. They have those in Amazon
I say you should eventually strip the head and barrel down to investigate that top end rattle. Apart from that it looks like you got yourself a little snorter. Well done!

I've seen people purchase the wrong stator and have issues like you're having with this one. Staters are AC and DC as well differentiated by having one or two different colored coils
I’ve been working on dirt bikes and atv’s since I was about 15, I worked in a dealership and went to honda school. I have to say you seem to be very knowledgeable and you figure problems that can stump the best of us but one of the only problems I see is that you never torque anything that should be. Cylinders, heads, cam hold downs all need to be torqued to proper specs. Do yourself a favor and buy a good torque wrench in 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch and follow torque specs. Also be careful running bolts into aluminum threads with power tools that’s something I would never do but to each is own. Other than that great videos.

Years ago I bought a 1995 Seadoo XP that the owner thought had a locked up engine, only had a rock in the pump. Easy 1 hr fix.

Love the videos but everytime I see you use a impact on those small bolts that only get torqued to like 8ft/lbs it makes my head hurt lol.
Reminded of my father seeing lugnuts done by impact wrench, get home and loosen with tire iron and put some grease (lithium grease?)

I have a 1990 Honda Quad that runs like new. Has lost spark twice in 34 years - both times it was the CDI Box. I even bought a factory CDI the first time and it was a faulty one.

Some Honda machines from that era have two boxes which have the same plug ins connected to the harness. One is for ignition and the other is for oil temp ect. If you get your CDI from a third party source you may end up with the wrong one. If you plug the wrong one in the wrong spot it will fry the box

They make offset rachet wrench adapters that might make the cam tension adjustment go easier. I recently discovered that watching Rainman Ray's TH-cam channel. They have those in Amazon

I've seen people purchase the wrong stator and have issues like you're having with this one. Staters are AC and DC as well differentiated by having one or two different colored coils

I’ve been working on dirt bikes and atv’s since I was about 15, I worked in a dealership and went to honda school. I have to say you seem to be very knowledgeable and you figure problems that can stump the best of us but one of the only problems I see is that you never torque anything that should be. Cylinders, heads, cam hold downs all need to be torqued to proper specs. Do yourself a favor and buy a good torque wrench in 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch and follow torque specs. Also be careful running bolts into aluminum threads with power tools that’s something I would never do but to each is own. Other than that great videos.
Forgot to mention I’m 38 now so it’s been a few years
