Red Dead Redemption is one the few games that truly captures the spirit of the Wild West. The story takes place in 1911, as the frontier is finally catching up with the modern world. Cars, trains, and telephones are popping up everywhere, but in Armadillo is a sleepy desert town still caught in the times of old. Rockstar did a good job of giving you things to do in an otherwise empty world. There are some excellent mini games. You can play liar's dice, hunt for animals, capture horse and a lot more.
The pace is definitely slow. And it's deliberate. I think Rockstar wanted to capture that old Western movie feel. The game builds up, until it boils to a simmer. And just when you think it's over, there's an entire third act.
We tried to cut as much as we can. We left a lot of the relevant dialogue as Marston is traveling from one place to the next, but we also made sure to cut when it was getting repetitive, and we also wanted to cut all the unnecessary activities like herding cattle. But as always we included important gameplay, relevant dialogue and all cutscenes to create one fluid cinematic experience. We hope you enjoy!

I just finished it too and damn it still feels a little unreal that rockstar gave us the prequel everyone wanted to play rather than another story based on different characters like I had initially expected. Both games are heavily connected yet can be understood and loved individually. Fantastic storytelling.

Finished rdr2 , then watched this. Never played rdr before and had no idea how it was going to end. Cried like a baby for 10 minutes. Somehow, playing in this particular order makes it so much more devastating. All that effort to give John and his family a decent life - everything that Arthur did, everything John did - all that was in vain. What would Jack do with his life now? Resort to the outlaw way of living too? So heartbreaking...Rockstar, I hate you and love you at the same time.

The sad part is we will probably never see red dead redemption 3. Rockstar has to make GTA 6 but they’re not even working on it since they keep adding to GTA 5 online. So weird watching this story again after RDR2, the little details I never noticed in the dialogue like John saying to Bonnie that he's only been a rancher for 3 years or so (4 years in reality), brings back fond memories of building the place with Uncle and Charles :)

I did with my dad after he watched me play RDR2, he's 72 and he loves westerns
I've already watched 1:24:41 of this video and I'm enjoying it. I finished RDR2 recently.
When i play this game few months after it was released i didn't have much idea of the story, just a dude wanted to kill and capture his old gang members to save his family. But after playing RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2. It's all different now, dutch, bill and Javier were like family but after a betrayal the memories still there while hunting those men. It's kinda sad that arthur was never mentioned in this game, i hope they make a remaster and try to put arthur somewhere in the game. He deserves it.
I'm not too mad at Arthur not being mentioned, just because from my large amount of time spent wandering the Ranch in RDR 2 listening to the family. I got a heavy impression that John really dislikes talking about Arthur, which would be understandable enough I guess, they were basically brothers for 15+ years then Arthur saved Johns whole family and John himself and died in the process, John likely finds it tough to think about him without losing his edge. At least thats how I explain it to myself.
John's never really been the most open of guys at the end of the day, he isn't given much reason to discuss Arthur, especially not with some of the people he finds himself associating with through this story. The only person I could have seen him talk about Arthur with would have been Dutch, at the end. But I guess him and Dutch had said all they needed to say to eachother about Arthur at the top of Mount Hagen when they killed Micah. No need to rehash it.
Another good time to mention him might have been right at the start of the game with Bill at Fort Mercer, when Bill says "You never tried to save me before, you only seemed to save yourself". Bill could have mentioned Arthur there if all had been known in advance, it would have made sense. But it still kind of does, as Bill could be meaning you only saved yourself, because Arthur died and John couldn't save him.

1:07:25 people always say arthur is a better gunslinger than john but I'd argue that at this point in John's life he is superior in gun slinging, just look at how effortlessly he shoots off someones hat. Let us not forget that he also killed like entire ARMIES in the first game and literally becomes a legend of the west by the time he returns to beeches hope at the end of the game
I think Arthur is better in a fight and John is better at shooting but in his prime, Arthur was the best gunslinger around. I feel like he passed that trait down to John when he sacrificed himself to help him get away
You must be forgetting Arthur ALSO fought off the army and shot SEVERAL BIRDS out of the air during a small gamble in the wild. A lot more impressive than a floaty hat slowly drifting downward.
In my opinion the story of this game was so much darker than red dead 2. The dead guy in the barn still fucks with me and for that I think this game had the better story.
Agreed the story was far darker and for that matter better as you stated better. For whatever reason tho I was more fond of Arthur than John. The better game I guess is RDR2 but a lot of that has to do with the technological advancements and the vastness of the gameplay options and world

Now I believe it's time for a 12 hour movie with the RDR2 story curscenes first, leading into the events of RDR1. That would be a true western epic.

Even though I love Arthur and consider him my all time favorite protagonist, something that is far more respectable in John is that he made the choice to sacrifice himself for the sake of his Family's wellbeing when he could of ran.
Arthur didn't have a choice in the matter, he changed and became an honorable and relatable Character after he got diagnosed with TB.
This isn't ragging on Arthur because he is my favorite, so I do take into consideration that John became the man he was in RDR1 because of Arthur's example.
The remaining question is, will Jack now follow John's example after killing Ross if there is a Jack DLC in RDR2 based off of the voice glitch

I think John is the best part of this game. He talks about Redemption and he works hard to fix his mistakes and make things right for his family constantly being told by people like Landon Rickets that there's no such thing as Redemption or escape. That first Cutscene also says and you can see John thinking about everything that's happening wondering if there truly is Redemption. This game is amazing and still is my favorite

and the ride to get back to your family with Compass playing (my fav song in the game), but I guess the soundtrack isn't owned by 2K or Rockstar.

I was surprised in red dead redemption 2 when the game kept going after Arthur died, I don’t play very many games so this was the first series that allowed you to play as a different character after the main character dies
One of the games that definitely deserves a remaster or a remake (preferably remake, same activity and detail scale as RDR2 and maybe even expand more into making Mexico larger to counteract the exemption of New Hanover, Lemonye, and Armbagio.)

When i heared the voice of Hosea in RDR2 i thought it was the same voice actor West Dickens had in the first game. I was telling my wife while playing "hey listen, that's West Dickens voice". But now i googled it and apparently both characters have diffrent voice actors. Hosea is spoken by Curzon Dobell and Dickens by Don Creech. But just listen to both and tell me what you think.

Damn, more than 7 years later I realize that I missed the real ending of the game , I stopped playig after John's death and never saw his son's revenge......
Least Im not the only one. I re loaded my save point, and didn't finish it. I liked John's voice, not his son. And i didn't want John to die, that pissed me off.
When I played red dead redemption two I didn’t even finish the stranger missions after Arthur died. It’s so weird continuing doing tasks for people as John. I did that with God of war also. We came back from jotunheim and I didn’t realize you have to go home to see the cut scene with Thor

Thanks for posting this. I'm finally getting around to playing the sequel after hearing so many good things about it. Before playing I really wanted to get a good grasp of the first game as I've never played it and this was the shorter option compared to watching a full playthrough. Halfway through watching this I'm regretting not actually playing it myself!

The final showdown is legendary!! I love how Rockstar incorporates the Colt 1911 .45 semi auto to mark the coming of the new Western era.

I feel like Bully and RDR were the best Rockstar games. Don't get me wrong-GTA is fun but these games deserve just as much love as the GTA, maybe not as many sequels but at least something.
Naz Dhillon It feels like GTA in the Wild West, kinda how Bully feels like GTA in Prep School, but it does so much more: really, if you're a fan of either games you should play it. This one's the best 'GTA' in my opinion.

I played Gun upon its release, and that gave me a fresh pallet for more westerns. I missed out on Red Dead Revolver, but when I saw the commercial for Red Dead Redemption, I was sure it would deliver what was presented. I had never been so happy to be wrong in my expectations. This game delivered a once in a lifetime experience that remains fresh in my mind to this day, and RDR2 only sweetened the universe.
