    I am a single 25 year old female graduate student living by myself, about a month ago my regulator broke. Because of this video and the video on how to remove the door panel I was able to get the part (from 1A Auto Parts) and tools I needed to get the job done. I need to say thank you and what a great job explaining on how to do things. You helped me with every step.
    Unfortunately when replacing the regulator that was very badly broken, it had also broke the window sash, It would be great if you could create a step by step video on how to replace the window sash. I have already ordered the part from you!
    Thanks again!

    THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! With your help I was able to fix this with the help of my son - all by our selves!!! Both my front windows have been broken for a YEAR. So HAPPY ONE WORKS AGAIN!!! Now for the drivers side window... YAY!

    You're welcome. The motor could be betting tired, or you may want to take the door panel off to see of the window regulator is broke. You could also try to spray the window seals with silicone spray to see if that helps it to glide up and down a little easier.

    I can't tell you how much I appreciate all of your videos. I live in Hawaii and I just bought a 2001 Pontiac Grand AM for my son as a surprise when he gets home from vacation. All of these minor repairs that I have done saved me tons of cash. You make it so easy anyone can do it. I replaced my window regulator in less than an hour...OMG! AMAZING! Thank you so very much. Please keep the videos coming.

    My 2001 Grand Am had a broken motor on the drivers side and a broken clip on the passenger side. After watching the video, I felt confident that I could make the repairs myself. I ordered the parts (they arrived in business 3 days) and went to work. The step-by-step video was spot-on. With a little patience, I was able to remove and replace both regulators on my car. The local GM dealer quoted me $350 per door. I think I paid $130 for both the parts (including delivery) from 1A. I saved at least $550 by doing this myself. Thanks 1A!!

    Appreciate you taking time do offer this to the public! How about a 2004 grand prix??? Window was partially down, tried to roll up, heard a thunk and now won't move either way. Auto glass repair shop thought it was a regulator.

    I'm so glad I found this video...just changed two front regulators in no time. The shop quoted me a while back at $600 for a single replacement (which I thought was ridiculous)! I got a pair of new regulators from ebay for $75 and spent about an hour replacing them. Just saved $1100...this calls for a beer.

    @sritz1967 You could try to use some silicone spray (found at the auto parts store) to spray on the weatherstrip around the door glass. This will help it to glide easier.

    If you're just replacing a bad window regulator, this video will show you how to do that. If you need to replace the window, once the regulator is free from the window you may be able to pull it out of the top of the door. Sometimes this requires you to remove any weatherstrip that the window may be coming into contact with while trying to remove it. You may also need to angle the glass in and out, in order to take it out of the door and replace it with a new piece of glass. Hope this helps you.

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If it's stuck in the up position it'll be easier to remove the bolts that we show in the video on the regulator. You can use painters tape to tape the window in the up position so that it doesn't fall down once the regulator is removed. Hope this helps you out.

    UPDATE: Success!!! I got my part in a few days, as promised. I'm to cheap for faster delivery. I have a 4 door but like the video states its the same but different. Got the job done an about an hour and it works great!!! AND it was half the price of the " ---- Know How" Parts place. Which is awesome because my younger driver has a slight issue with keeping a car in one piece for any extended period of time.

    Thank you so very much for posting this, my whole window fell in the door and the dealership here gave me an estimate of $500 for a repair. Turns out that the "blooper" you had was the same problem I had. The piece that moved the window up and down the track shattered. That ought to be fairly cheap to replace. Once again, thank you!

    @Garonyldas As far as not going up all the way that is very odd. The regs usually just go until they either the window is all up or the down until it hits the bottom stop. If you want send me a PM with where you purchased the reg from. There are various manufacturer's of these regs and we like to avoid the lower quality ones.

  • @niktnad

    Awesome videos, Chilton leaves some safety details out that you mentioned, (taping glass, etc..) I left my window down too many times during rain storms and the manual WR got rusted thus pushing window out of track. After conjuring the motivation to replace it, it's not so bad, I'd rather do brakes though. I have a 94 grand am 2dr, for anyone that has rivets holding the regulator, pop out the stem of rivet with an awl and hammer (hit it like you mean it too). Nut and bolt the new one IMO.

    If you are just replacing the regulator the white clips will stay clued to the window and you just have to screw the new regulator onto the window. If you are replacing the glass you’ll have to buy new clips and clue them too the glass and then you can screw the regulator onto the window.

  • @1AAuto

    @Mr16430 We do not carry the adhesive. You may want to visit our local auto body supply store, and they could help you out with the correct adhesive.

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Garonyldas As far as the switch being backward, your regulator is wired backward. It is fixable. You need a small screw driver or paperclip. Note or take a picture of how the regulator wires are installed in the plastic connector. With the regulator unplugged force the small screwdriver or a paperclip in to the middle of each terminal. It should unlock a tab then the wire pulls out from the back side. Pull the tab on the terminal back up so it will lock back in to the connector.

    @adcnortty your new window regulator should bolt right in as the video shows. You may want to check to make sure that the cables aren't twisted and that the window bracket is facing the right way.

  • @ant1h
    @ant1h 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    good video, but when i checked my grand am i realized it was the white plastic window guide on the cable. i had already bought the sash from my dealer and it was 30$, luckily they had a return policy since i didn't open them. i'm gonna try to remove the regulator like in the video and add new guides to it. thanks for showing me how to take it off. Maybe you can show me how to change the fuel filter on the Grand am too, its in a tight spot. Thanks

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Usually the cable will let go and break on them, causing the window to not go up or come down.

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Mr16430 They should connect to the lower part of the window with a special adhesive,and then bolt to the window regulator where the hole is in the tab.

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    You could take the door panel off to see if the cable on the window regulator has broken. You could also test the plug going to the window motor with a test light to see if the motor has power going to it.

    You can use a heat gun to remove the sash connections you just need to be careful not to overheat the glass and crack it. I believe they do sell some epoxy remover at your local parts store or you could try looking up what other people on through the online forms.

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @bardaso It sounds like there may be something binding on the window regulator. It could possible also be a dry weatherstrip seal. You could try a little silicon spray on them if that's the case.

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @phouli65 You should be able to hold the window up with some painters tape, and then unbolt the window regulator from the window and remove it. Hope this helps you out.

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You may want to test the power going to the door from the switch. If it's on the driverside, and the switch is bad, you may need a new master switch. Hope this helps you out.

    Hey folks... if your window regulator is fine, but the 2 P.O.S. plastic attaching "sash" clips that are glued to the glass are busted, please read my entire following response.
    I promise you won't regret it.
    To attach 2 NEW window retaining "sash" clips to the glass, you can use EITHER of the following products:
    1.) 3M #08641 Channel Bonding & Sidelite Adhesive (Epoxy).
    - OR -
    2.) Dow / DuPont Betaseal #U-428 Plus, window glass primerless Urethane Adhesive.
    So basically, you're gonna use either epoxy or urethane.
    As a quick "heads up", both products are quite costly & each of them has trade offs:
    First off, the epoxy costs almost double the cost of the urethane. However, the epoxy cures substantially faster than the urethane, so if time is of the essence... well, as usual, you're gonna pay the piper.
    Epoxy:
    Working Period: 4 to 5 minutes.
    Cure: Approx 1 hour.
    *Note: A special (costly) applicator gun & disposable mixing nozzles ARE required for the proper use of this product.
    *Important note from 3M Support:
    The product #08641 is one of our professional adhesives that does require the use of the 3M™ Performance Manual Applicator (part number 08190) and 3M™ Static Mixing Nozzle (part number 38191) which will also allow the use of many of our other 50mL adhesives. For one time use or adhesives that does not require an applicator, please feel free to contact us with your application details, we be glad to assist. Our technical team can be reached at 1.877.666.2277 M-F 8am-4:30pm CT
    **Urethane:
    Cure: Approx 5 hrs.
    Full Cure: 24 hrs
    **Note from me: A extreme/heavy-duty caulking gun is required to use this product. A standard caulking gun will NOT work.
    (Some procedural Notes:
    New clips adhesion comes AFTER you have taped & marked the precise location of the old clips & you have carefully chiseled/cut/ground away the old broken ones completely from the window.
    ***A few Pro tips regarding old broken clip removal from glass:
    A small hammer, a SHARP chisel, a good sharp pocket knife, & a razor blade are all your best friends for removing old clips & adhesives from glass. Just be patient & take your time, or you can bust the glass. ***Do NOT pry!!!*** Cut/chisel sideways. Basically, kinda like whittling away at a piece of wood. Chemical expoxy/adhesive removers are available, but I personally wouldn't bother with them.
    ****When installing new sash clips: There IS indeed an "inside" & an "outside" to the clips. Do NOT glue them on incorrectly, as it will prove to be a very costly & time-consuming mistake. I use a black permanent marker & write the words "inside" & outside" on each plastic clip. It may sound silly, but it basically eliminates second thoughts, guesswork, & the chance of a "do-over".)
    DuPont Betaseal U-428 Plus is what I, and many glass replacement business Pros use. (The slightly "softer/thinner" U-418 can also be used.)
    The urethane comes in a 10.5oz metal caulk tube.
    You also will need a professional grade extreme / heavy-duty caulk gun. As previously mentioned, el "cheap-o" hardware store caulking guns will NOT work.
    Best to plan on spending $40 to $60 dollars for a tube of Urethane & a heavy-duty Pro-Grade caulk gun.
    It will very likely cost you even more $$ for the 3M epoxy & applicable dispensing tools.
    I bought a Red Devil brand "Extreme Duty" caulk gun #3989. It was around $35, shipped, from Amazon.
    It's made from nearly all metal construction & is very well made. It pushes the very thick Urethane effortlessly.
    Anyhow, all of the stuff you need to do the entire job ends up being rather pricey. Believe it or not, Purchasing the "expensive" plastic window glass retaining/sash clips was the cheapest part of the ordeal.
    Anyhow, now you'll now have a handy Professional-grade caulk gun to use for other heavy-duty uses (construction adhesive, tar, urethane) or light duty (silicone, window/tub/tile caulk, etc) projects.
    As for the Urethane, well, you will ultimately use very little Urethane on each clip... 95% of your tube of urethane will likely go to waste, once finished.
    But, sometimes that's just the way the cookie crumbles.
    Now, can you all understand why repair shops charge what they do? Parts, Labor, & Special Tools ARE REQUIREMENTS for this type of glass repair job.

    @BondoFox Nothing leaking just some melting snow running down the driveway. I have not yet taken apart a '98 so I can't help you directly. I can say that it is probably similar, some screws and bolts then clips hold it on. My advice is just don't force it. If it does not seem to be coming apart, pause look for another screw or bolt before pulling or potentially breaking something.

    +Tyrone Coleman It's hard to make a diagnosis over the internet, but, if the motor runs, but the window doesn't move, that does sound like it could be a problem with the regulator.

    Normally when there is an issue with power it is related to a frayed wire possibly in the hinge of the door itself. 9 times out of 10, the issue is a wire related one and not a fuse holder one.

    @filipina1979 If it has manual windows check to see if there's something binding it up inside the door. If there isn't then it's more than likely the door regulator that has worn out. If you have electric windows, the window motor may be tired, you could try to spray some silicon spray on the weatherstrip that seals around the window on your 1999 Pontiac Grand AM.

    If there's power going to the window motor and the motor's running very slow, it could be a worn window motor that needs to be replaced. You could also try a little silicone spray on the weatherstrip that the glass slides into on the door, and also put some white grease on the window regulator channel. These two things would help to speed it up. We carry new window regulators and window motors with FREE Shipping on our website 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

    There would more than likely be quite a bit of work involved with doing this.

    The concept is the same but the positioning of the screws and bolts that hold the panel on will be different between the two.

    @xMurderxmurderjoey There are a couple of springs on those window regulators. You might want to check to see if they are still intact. If you can't repair them we do sell new replacement ones on our website 1aauto.com Here's a link to them on our website. 1aauto.com/1A/WindowRegulators/Pontiac/GrandAm/1AWRK00287/515893/1995?ATony

    @bossman519 Take a look at the cables to see if they are caught on something, preventing the window from moving down.

    They're called sash connectors. You can relace them. You would need to glue them back onto the window. We carry them on our website 1aauto.com 888-844-3393 Part Number: 1AWRG00523

    @sritz1967 It sounds this the window has a great deal of resistance on it somewhere slowing it down.

    Let the vehicle get up to temperature.Then with the car running check the level of the transmission fluid. It looks like the oil dipstick and should be labeled as transmission. Pull the dipstick out and wipe the fluid off, then stick it back into the tube and pull it out and then check the level. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

    We carry new window regulators as seen in our video. You should be able to get some small bolts at your local hardware store to bolt the new window regulator in place. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
