- In this video, I demonstrate how to Tie-Dye the HashTag Rainbow Spiral. It is a Discharge Design where I start with a black tee and remove color with 3 different folds and then I tie and dye it with Rainbow Colors. I use Decolourant for this one and steam to remove color.

You are welcome and yeah it is a multiple step design.... I had started doing these one white tees, folding the same way, but instead of adding the Decolourant, I added thick black dye, then batched, washed and then folded again and added more black dye .... so it is fun to do them starting with a black tee ... have fun!! ✌🏻

I like this t-shirt especially since if you only do one set of lines no matter which direction it goes in you could turn this into a tiger stripe and it would look super cool.
Yes, there are so many ways to play with this stuff... you could even make the do a loose scrunchie pleat instead of a tight straight line.... I did this tiger stripe video, but I started on a white tee ... this would look awesome to start with a black tee : th-cam.com/video/5mPyuZR65fQ/w-d-xo.html
That decolourant works great! I love this concept, I’m going to order some of that from jacquard stat! 🔥 I started using 100% cotton knitting thread for some ties. It’s not very strong but it’s totally transparent and absorbent. It’s called Lydia’s #10 I think. Joanne’s carries it. ✌🏻❤️
Awesome! Thank you! and I have used some 100% cotton Crochet thread when I ran out of kite string a couple times... after batching and rinsing, I cut the rainbow strings and now use them as book marks ✌🏻

Yes there are so many ways to play with this design... I plan to explore more folds and yes the fan fold is one of them ... plus I want to explore this design with OWB as well... so many things to try and so little time LOL ... have fun with your experiments, I wish you success!! ✌🏻🥳🌈
Awesome results. Have you tried this with OWB powder instead of the “paste” Jaquard deColourant? Do you think sprinkling the powder on the shirt in the steamer would do something similar?

its like you are reading my mind... I do have plans to play with OWB and this design .... one way was to coat one side with OWB and try steaming it... I will do a video when I try it so I can post if it works ... plus I want to try some other methods of folding to get different patterns of color removal ... have fun with your experiments!! ✌🏻🙏🥳🌈💚

I rarely mix the soda ash into the dyes as that would activate them and they would need to be used soon as they will slowly deteriorate and produce lighter colors ....
So, usually I would soak the tee in soda sh after I did a good rinse job on it.... but lately I have been adding my soda ash after I add the dyes....
I just add a coat of soda ash to the top and bottom of the tee and then batch ...

Gorgeous! Question, you said Out White Bright a few times when using your decolorant. I bought a few bottles of the OWB from watching some of your other vids. Can I use that on the steaming step?
Thank you and yeah I get confused while talking sometimes.... BUT, to your question, I have tried to use steam on the OWB, but I have not had success just yet, but I have more experimenting to do... if I find a way, I will make a video for sure....

Looks great. About how long does it take in the steamer? I will definitely give it a go. I wonder if Would work in a microwave steamer?
it took mine about 30-45 minutes for most of the color to come out ... and I have not tried a microwave with this process, but I did use it years ago when I was dyeing silk and it needed steam to set the colors, so you could try it and see ... BUT, I do this steaming outside just to avoid having the chemical steam in the house ✌🏻

How long usually till the tee looses it's dyed color?
You are welcome, I am glad to be of help. AS for the colors, they will stay, I use Procion Dyes and they are permanent dyes... very long lasting... over years they will fade slightly, but usually the tee gives out first ✌🏻

@@MrTieDye do you steam threat/heat threat your tee's? i found this ideea regarding some dye manufacturer, to heat treat for 30 mins or so ... but if you say your dye is good, and from what I've seen you recomend letting the fabric soak for at least 48 hours so you might not need this
@@MrTieDye out of your experience with this particular brand of colours, do you do your own blends or you prefer the premade ones? i've seen you doing ur own version of turquise for example in blending. And let's say you want to lighten a color for a specific design, would titanium dioxide or barium oxide powder work for this? from my breef googling titanium dioxide seems toxic but apparently not so much as barium oxide seems to be.....
So after a couple of mins into writing this it appears from my little corner of the universe that it's not quite advisable to use white oxided to brighten the colours

I was wondering if you could use the vegetable steamer in the microwave? How long would I need to put it in for? I'm thinking that it will accomplish the same thing but with a lot less time.
You should do this with a brown shirt and dye it yellow/gold. Waffle fry tie dye shirt!
Yes that would be Awesome.... you can mark out an area on the tee with dry erase crayons, or chalk and then when you pleat it up, put the decolourant on just the marked area ... just have to re mark it before each pleat and then you would have the design just in the middle of the chest if you want ✌🏻. and the waffle fry sounds awesome!! ✌🏻🌈🥳
Can you do the dye removal without steam? Like out in the sunshine? I love this concept…
You need it hotter than that. A metal colander over a pan of boiling water (put the pan lid in the colander) works as does an iron (iron on the folded piece first and then untie and iron again - more of a pick it up and place in a mew area than the usual back and forth ironing)
depending on where you live, like maybe in AZ or FL you might get enough heat, but I'm not sure ... I leave this in the steamer for about 40 minutes to get this much color out ... and there are other ways to get the heat/steam ... Amanda gave some ideas below ... I have also used a microwave when I was steaming silk, and I have let the decolourant dry and used a steam iron to remove color, but that takes longer, especially when you have to do it 3 times on one tee

Can you use a hand steamer on the decolorant? I have been trying to support my brother some as he is making tie dyes and I really love the reverse tie dyes. I have a hand steamer that I used a few times in soap making. If my brother can use it for the tie dyes, I think it would be great though. Thanks!
It is possible... in the past I had a great steamer, it was a stand up model with a big tank and a long hand wand to steam dresses or curtains or whatever, but it was before I knew about using Decolourant ... more recently I saw a small hand steamer and tried it, but it did not put out enough steam ... so I say try it out and see if it works ✌🏻🙏

What can you use instead of a vegetable steamer i seen on the back if thr jar where it says to use an iron but its kind of hard to iron the pleats evenly not to mention the rubber bands make it harder as well i tried using a steam cleaner but it did not work also did you wait for it dried before steaming it
So far with the Decolourant and doing this design, the best I have found is a vegetable steamer ... I have done some ironing with it, but that was when I did a stencil and the tee was laying out flat, but since this is the whole tee and it is tie up ... I found my steamer at goodwill for $5.00 ✌🏻 wish I could be of more help 🙏
@MrTieDye so i found out that you can tie it up apply the decolorant and let it dry then untie it and iron it but it only turned ut grey do you think it would still be died being grey
I have a question I know u said tge dyes from like walmart to use them RIGHT away but what about the procion dyes. How long can u use them for after you mix them
yes, the 'One Step Kits' have the soda ash mixed in with the dyes, so they are active as soon as you add water to the bottles....
BUT, with Procion Dyes, I mix the soda ash separately and soak my tees in it ... so then the dyes will last for 2-3 weeks at room temp (65-70F here in Oregon) BUT, they last even longer if stored in a mini fridge... I have one and set it to 42F and I have used dyes that were mixed 2 months ago and they still gave decent colors ... not as good as fresh mixed dyes, but still good ✌🏻
also, the dyes store at room temp are not 'bad' at the 2-3 weeks mark, they just produce lighter shades of color.... so you can keep using them... just know that they will continue to produce lighter shades of color .... I put duct tape on my dye bottles so I can write the mix date on them ..... and sometimes if I happen to have a lot of one color left over and it has been 3 weeks, I will add another scoop of dye powder and blend it again, this will freshen the dyes up, close to newly mixed, ... but I only do this once so I do not have a build up of dye powder in the bottles ... I hope this helps ✌🏻🌈🙏

Yes I brushed the top and the bottom, then I steamed it, then rinse and repeat a couple more times, but each time, I brush the top and the bottom before I steam it ✌🏻
@@MrTieDye you're a rare breed, sir! Thank you so much. Actually i ordered online a few locally made packets of dyes that are famous here, turns out, many were sad after using said/sad products. After many videos that i've viewed i learned that reactive dyes are the ones that stood out! Btw, the ending of your videos are quite funny, i mean the one-staff do-it-all stuff😊!
Would bleaching then using peroxide to stop the bleaching process work or white out?
I have not had much luck getting this much color out of a tee with just bleach ... but you can try it and see
and I have some ideas to do this with OWB, but I have not made that video yet ✌🏻

I have not 'switched' ... I just use the various products depending on what kind of results I am looking for ... it this case I wanted these lines of color removed.... Decolourtant is how I have done it in the past .... BUT, I am playing with some methods to remove color in a similar pattern, but with OWB ... I just love to experiment and get many of my inspirations from meditation... so it is an idea that pops in and I just figure out how I can do it.... so Yes, there will be more OWB videos ✌🏻💚🙏🥳🌈

Did you soak with soda ash??? If so, when?
the time to soak in soda ash is after you have done a really good rinse on it after you have finished removing color (you can even do a wash on it if you want) .... then you can soak in soda ash, twist up and dye it ... just like you would with a pre washed white tee ✌🏻
I somehow got Unsubscribed from your channel so I'm so glad this video popped up! I've miss your tutorials sir!!! Anyway, I only have the Out White Brite and no steamer. Will the other process work for this pattern? Since the shirt will be soaked in the solution. This is an amazing pattern!!! I just don't want to ha e to buy a steamer and the decolorant if possible. Is the steaming step a requirement?
the Decolourant needs heat and moisture to remove the color, this is a fast way to do it.... BUT, with Decolourant, I have used a steam iron as well and I have seen larger heat presses used, I have one of these as well, but I have not gotten it set up to use yet .... and I plan to try this design using OWB and see what I can come up with .... so you can experiment around and see if you can find a different way to add the heat and moisture ✌🏻

Hi mr. Tie dye i love your work and your tutorials just a friendly suggestion although you choose not to wear gloves while using the decolorant which is probably fine given that your a professional tie dyer but you should most definitely encourage your subscribers to wear them because that suff has the potential to offer some serious chemical burns from handling it without gloves and people who aren't as experienced with tie dying could really hurt themselves unfortunately I learned the hard way and I'm sure that you don't want your subscribers to do the same thanks for the tutorial btw I'm about to start on this one
