Are Democrats Less Authoritarian Than Trump? We Asked DNC Delegates

  • Reason TV asked DNC delegates about issues ranging from freedom of speech to trade to executive power, guns, and foreign policy.
    ----
A recent University of Massachusetts, Amherst study found one trait linking all Donald Trump supporters-their authoritarian inclinations.
Trump presented his dystopian outlook in his closing speech last Thursday at the Republican National Convention (read Reason's coverage of it here) where he stated that he alone was the solution to the nation's problems.
But do Democrats and their selected candidate Hillary Clinton offer a viable anti-authoritarian alternative?
Reason TV talked to delegates on day two of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, PA and asked them how Clinton contrasted with Trump on major issues such as free speech, free trade, the sharing economy, gun rights, Citizens United, and foreign policy.
    Approximately 5 minutes.
Produced by Zach Weissmueller. Camera by Weissmueller, Alexis Garcia, and Joshua Swain. Graphics by Swain. Music by Podington Bear and Antiqcool.

"...it's about internal consistency and neither side has any."
      This...and more.
Internal consistency requires holding irreducible primary truths upon which other truths depend on...i.e., principles. The reason neither side has any internal consistency is because they have rejected all principles in favor of pragmatism. Without Principles a person's thoughts and actions (politically speaking) resemble that of a drunk: they vacillate between one policy position to another, ignoring the fact that both require a form of government which is antithetical to liberty and happiness. Eventually, like the stumbling drunk, they end up face down in the political ditch of an authoritarian society.

abcw It reminds me of someone that cheats on a test. They memorize all the answers to all the questions, but when asked at how they arrived at that answer, they start stuttering, looking at you like a dear caught in the headlights. I believe some realize at the point that they are nothing more than intellectually lazy zombies or sheeple. Sometimes these gorilla tactics are necessary to ignite a spark in someone to get them to rethink all that they believed was true and unending.

    • @fakecubed
      @fakecubed 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I actually find Republicans to be more internally consistent, at least the conservative kinds, they're just operating on a different axis. They are authoritarians, certainly, and they will generally admit that they are, but their goals with that authoritarian power are generally (and again, I'm talking about the conservatives here, not the crony capitalists) based around following human nature and human traditions that have come out of human nature. They're not out to change people, as they believe people are, and they're consistent on that point even if they are sometimes wrong about their base assumptions.
Of course it's worth noting that the conservative wing of the Republican party has not really been in control of the party in a good while. I see some movement on that front, at least. There are some Republicans I respect, and are truly ideological in nature. I haven't yet encountered a Democrat who can adequately explain the principles behind their political views. What Democrats care about is power for power's sake, and then they believe once they've achieved absolute power they can make the world a better place... somehow. Republicans can quote actual political philosophers, point to aspects of human nature that govern a sort of natural morality, and while they rarely ever actually follow through when they get power, I'd say that's more a flaw with politicians than the party platform. Like it or hate it, politics is a rather practical business, and power has a corruptive influence.
One problem with criticizing either major party is they are both, in their own ways, big tents. It's easy to find a Democrat or Republican that disagrees with a fellow party member on something, in a way that makes the whole party seem hypocritical. Then, of course, any major party candidate has to carefully walk the line of supporting the issues of different parts of their party that those parts care about most without offending the rest of the party. It's probably more productive to address specific wings of each party, at which point you will probably see fewer hypocrisies among their respective ideologies.

I really don't know what your asking me because I am totally misinformed or uninformed about most everything. But here is a pamphlet they gave me that told me what to think, it is really easy to read and has bright colors. And they said if I vote for them they will give me money by taking my money and giving it back to me minus a small transaction fee that they keep.

The government is nothing but an authority, it does everything it does, by and within that authority. You cannot expand government without expanding authoritarianism.

I love how one woman talks about how how it's Hillarys right if she becomes president is to do an executive action banning guns by saying, "She represents the people" and completely forgets about all of the pro-gun people's freedom of speech. If she did that, she wouldn't represent the people, she would represent a portion of the people.
