  • In this episode, I ventured out to a well known marsh system that I have fished plenty of times. I wanted to get some experience marsh fishing on the Bote Rover. I also towed a buddy out there.
Everyone, I do not recommend towing anything on the Bote Rover. Please do not try this! Be smart and don't be stupid like me.
If you are wanting to pick up a Bote Rover to fish the marsh, always be aware of oysters and shallow water. One wrong move can destroy your outboard!
    Stay safe everyone!

When your running, need to be on plane, and position for wind to drift you slowly, you have shallow water drive, circle round for next drift over what you just fished. Last, get a carbon marine 12-14 ft push pole, extension handle for you motor. Some tips to get you going in the right path 😉

I fish off an L2fish. If I see it’s going to be a windier day I bring out my 12’ push pole and plan my route based on projected wind direction. Shallow water the push pole is clutch against wind. If you do end up having to paddle into the wind you have to get as low as possible and paddle your ass off until you’re out of the shallows. Standing turns you into a giant sail. Just what I’ve learned on my board, I hope it helps.

You need to get you a parachute drifting anchor when it is windy and drift fish. We us it in the marsh in Louisiana Marsh they work good just throw your line out and let it drift the same speed of the tide. Use plastic bait like split tails and cocahoe minnow. Or live shrimp only on a hook by it self. don,t move the bait let the tide do the work. Live minnows work good this way to.

If you haven't done it yet, I'd suggest you ditch the SUP paddle and buy or make an extra long double bladed kayak paddle. I'd also suggest you buy a low slung folding chair instead of sitting on the cooler. I learned those tricks paddling a canoe in Thailand where I couldn't take my kayaks. The long kayak paddle is a lot more efficient than a single blade paddle ( I modified mine to 9' long because the canoes were higher and wider than a kayak), and sitting in a chair with back support will keep you from a very sore back at the end of a long paddling day. Great channel, BTW! That coming from a Sea Isle dweller here in Galveston.

I have a bluesky cat and i put a trolling motor mount on the front. I was in Matagorda marsh when it was blowing 15+ and what saved my butt was a good stake out pole/push pole. Even my 30lb minnkota couldn't get me out of the shallow mud in a high wind. Water is so skinny the prop has nothing to push against. See if you can mount a trolling motor to the front and get a looooong light stake out push pole.

Yes, can actually say I really like the skiff type set up; obviously seems somewhat less of an all around craft than the Outback, but getting to a fishing spot deep in the marsh and back in short time seems worth admission price, especially if you’re sight fishing. I can see an avid fishing enthusiast with both the aforementioned craft in the fleet. I would go with a 5 HP so I could fly fish Inks Lake.

I've been wanting to get a rover since they first came out but don't have the money. Hope you enjoy it. Just an fyi - it looks like you're holding the paddle the wrong way. You want the blade angled away from you, not toward you. That allows you to reach forward and pull toward you more efficiently.

You should have probably got the 15 HP. The 9.9 and 15 HP both weight the same thing. Great motor just pulled it out of storage to get ready for the spring and it started right up on the first pull. Wished I lived somewhere where I could go boating and fish all year round.

The only thing that boat is good for is getting you to the spot. It looks pretty inconvenient and not as intuitive as a kayak with peddles. Maybe you just need a longer paddle, or a paddle with two oars that makes it easier to get around with, without using the motor.
And with the wind limitation as you are emphasizing, this boat is pretty limited.
Heavier than a hobie and harder to maneuver around. To be honest, you fish more than you travel to the fishing spot with a kayak regardless. The pros and cons that you are presenting are saying, "Exploit this Rover thing since you bought it already, make some videos with it, get views and subs, then sell it!"
Hopefully your experience with it gets better and the weight on the scale changes.

I still say without a doubt, if he woulda got an old 13' Dargel Skooter he would be accessing the exact same waters, actually even shallower, and it would be a much more comfortable and safer experience, and without a doubt have been cheaper than whatever he paid for this thing. Ive seen some for under $500. We run a huge 21' Bay Stealth with a 140 (4 blade prop / power lift / tilt trim) and we can totally run in 7 inches, we do it every week, even take off in less than a foot without a problem and without making ruts. Its all about skill and knowing how to do it. .... buuut Im sure this all has to do with having the latest gimmick and looking cool. - I am not trying to hate in any way, I am just speaking from doing this stuff for years, and experience on the water. - I do hope to see more action and hope he gains confidence and experience.
