You should listen to some more recordings... (nothing wrong with the movie, Gerard Butlers acting was great but his singing was a bit meh) there are so many good ones out there
A Smith i actually have listened to many other recordings. the 2004 movie was the first phantom of the opera movie i watched so when i watched other ones, they were different & i didn’t enjoy it as much as other people. to me, i love gerard’s voice. he only had one vocal lesson before shooting the movie & personally, his low voice is soothing & doesn’t sound too perfect. i do respect other versions though of the movies/musicals!

There always seems to be a debate about the difference between Ramin Karimloo and Ben Lewis and their voices, skills and training. I am, personally, a fan of Ramin's voice and acting. This doesn't take anything away from Ben's gifts - I just don't care for his voice or style. To each is own. Someone pointed out Ben's training, which is extensive and admirable. Whether that makes him better or not is questionable. It occurred to me that he may have had the good fortune to have a family who could send him to school. I don't know what Ramin's family situation was, just that he saw Phantom when he was about 14 or 15 and decided that was his goal - to play the Phantom. Doubt he even knew he could sing - but he could. One of his teachers commented that he and others were blown away when they hear Ramin sing a song from POTO. Ramin left school and began working as a singer, actor, dancer. So his "training" was actually doing the work. This is generally one of the best ways to learn a craft, is to do it. He is also an accomplished musician (keyboard, guitar and banjo), likely all self taught. Kind of like Erik. One thing I'd like to point out is that Ramin seems to have moved on from Phantom and has had success in other roles and media. Ben is still playing the Phantom. Nothing wrong with that - it's a role that a man can play well into his 50s so long as the voice lasts, thankfully. Musical theater is a tough career to take on - playing Broadway and the West End are the ultimate. That said, why not take on new challenges? Or are you even being asked? Just saying that all the training in the world doesn't make the jobs appear.
Penelope Addy Ben Lewis was in many roles before. But he stayed away from West end. He could be ridiculously funny as well like in Forbidden Broadway. Maybe he was called by ALW to save the doomed POTO London again, just like he did with the doomed LND. He is a phantom saviour.
