    i like how at 3:24 you can tell how powerful this performance was because of how utterly silent the audience is. like everyone is holding their breath waiting to see what will happen.

      And goddamn, did you hear the way he said “try my patience”? Intimidating asf. He mastered the “domineering” factor of the phantom.

    This is what they call TOTAL "character freedom" folks. Everyone is going too have little subtleties that are different from each other. That's why people have gone too see this marvelous production so many times. Because each Phantom is played a bit differently. And i love that about this character.

      Omg! Yes true to the book where he cries before he finally lets Christine good for good. This why I love theater and why people don't get how I can see the same show more than once (I saw Joseph three times, Cats 3 times and POTO twice and will see it again someday!). Performers always bring their own flair to a role.

    It's so not fair that we may never see this version ever performed again. The room for character interpretation in the original was an absolute blessing to both cast and audience.

    Thank you so much for this video. I saw Brad Little perform this on tour when I was 10. He read "You try my patience," exactly like this, and while I have seen Phantom multiple times in my life, this interpretation is the one that has never left my mind since I was a kid. If you do another one of these, I would love to see more moments with Gina Beck. I've never seen another actress perform Christine as unhinged and multifaceted as Beck does, and I think the character is all the more compelling for it.

    Thanks for making this, super interesting, its amazing how even tho its the same dialogue, how different acting choices can really convey different unspoken meanings. One of my fave Christines is Rachel Barrell for this reason. Her voice is fine, but it's the little acting choices she makes and just the way she embodies the character that makes the believable naivety needed for this plot, well, believable, and even likable. Well you can tell i've thought about this way too much lol.

    So sad too see this WONDERFUL musical come to an end. I was lucky enough too see Crawford and Brightman back in the 80's when they finally made it over to NY. I also saw Sierra Boggess and Ramin in their respective roles. WOW JUST WOW too both of them...!!! They had great chemistry together for sure. I was also shocked but not surprised too hear Andrew Lloyd Webber discussing how much it costs to put this production on each week. Something like close to a million dollars...!!! That's just insane but worth every penny. Especially, after he commented on the younger generation really taking an interest in this musical now. And i understand it's a cost cutting measure after all as a singer myself music doesn't make a lot of money folks. But their is something VERY special about this musical because it's more than just a love story at it's roots. It's about acceptance of one's differences. And individual being The Phantom who feels like an outcast of society. If that doesn't speak volumes and hold A TON of relevancy in today's political landscape. Especially, in the LGBTQ+ community which i'm a part of. Then i don't know what does. It's a damn shame it's being pulled. They younger generation deserves too see this live and in living color not on a computer or TV screen.

    Thank you for putting all this together! I love all of them, 'cause I like when things are dynamic. I like the idea that every one of them has his version of the Phantom/Christine/Raoul. I love a scene that is missing: Earl Carpenter's Phantom after Christine's kiss: She touches his face, then he also does so. It seems that he suddently remember the way he looks. Almost as he had forgotten it during the miss.
    The idea: no mask-a different Charakter (animal) is something really cool, then if should be suddenly naked before other people we also would act differently. The mask is like clothes to him.

    0:18 I dont know but this scene makes me laugh =))))))))))) he's just so cute =)))) and then he is like: "Ey shut the fck up you insolent boy, she's singing!"
    2:37 yes, the duck face =))))))))))))))))))))))))) he was so happy cause his dream had come true that Christine was real now for him to design her with his wedding dress =))))))))) We all know he's a genius at any form of art except cutting his hair, right? :')
    3:00 I have never seen such a gentle Phantom like that, omg omg omg omg MY HEART!
    3:41 if I were Christine, I swear I would be fainted because of that. Yo man, that's how you ask a girl out?
    5:52 Omg this one makes my heart broken 😭😭😭😭😭 the way he looked and flinched is just... urg... not to mention in 6:03 the smoke started appear behind his back makes me think he was beginning to melt and disappear forever :'(
    6:30 hey.... boy... you... when I first saw it my mother instinct woke up inside this teenage girl huhuhuhu, my boy, you deserve better!!!! 😭😭😭😭😭
    7:26 I saw Anthony Warlow a lot in some comparison videos but this is the first time I has heard his voice. OMG THAT'S SO AMAZING! I have goosebumps immediately after hearing him UwU and his acting too, he's such a good Phantom for me. I always think that Erik is a man who learned everything from opera and novels so he should act dramatically like that (ya know, even the way he expressed his love to Christine with "say you share with me one love one lifetime..." was learning from Raoul @@ that's my headcanon, I mean maybe he thought using Raoul's way would make Christine love him more UwU)
    10:17 that man was still afraid to touch Christine after kidnapping her, hanging her boyfriend, throwing her, yelling at her and kissing her =))))))))
    11:09 haha I remember in another video, after this part, Christine's actress who is Mauer's wife tried to reach his "that part" when she sang "When will the flames at last consume us" and smile mischievously =)))))
    13:22 this is the reason why I always love Raab's Christine 😍 the way she looked at the mannequin was so innocent and even tried like it was her new toy =)))))
    Ohhhh and by the way I want to share you this so much!!! In the part where Raoul sing "I love herrrrr", Christine and Erik turn to him immediately at the same time =))))) Erik was like: "You say what????" and Christine was like: "Man!? Wasn't he angry enough!?". They are so cuteeeeee

    About Christine fainting: Which Phantom first caught her gracefully and tenderly placed her on the boat? Originally, she used to just plop down indecorously unto the ground.

    • @hoodedcrows8966
      @hoodedcrows8966  ปีที่แล้ว +24

      In the original show (in west end), the phantom would catch Christine and carry her to the boat, but every where else (like broadway) she falls down to the ground
      From what I’ve read, it’s because catching Christine and carrying her every night was very hard for the actors back, so it was removed to prevent injury (This is just what I know tho!)

    I might be biased because I saw him on tour, but John Cudia is easily in my top five Phantoms (and is kind of underrated, tbh, but thank you for putting him in this vid all the same!).

    I know people couldn’t bring him up more than they already do, but considering he’s genuinely just my favorite, my portrayal of choice would still be Ramin’s more aggravated, menacing Erik (the growl in his voice at times, the screaming, the forcefulness at times like when he practically chokes the life out of Christine in the final lair) I live for that shit. Reminds us the Phantom is still, in fact, a threatening figure with a bit of an unhinged side to him.

      @@lilyann168 That's why I kind of like Anthony Warlow's delivery in final lair. He sounds like he is older (no shade at the actor I think he was doing that on purpose) when he says. "This is indeed..." which makes sense because the Phantom is old enough to be Christine's father which is one of the things he use to control her.

    We all needed it. Such a great vid. xx
    I like Hugh Panaro, Brad Little, Anthony Warlow, John Cudia, Peter Jöback and Michael Crawford (ofc 🖤) the most.
    Hugh is often considered as very psychotic, but I wouldn't agree. He's definitely crazy (because the character of Erik is), but for me that's Ramin who seems almost psychopatic and also acts far more agressive. (he's not one of my favourite Eriks truth to tell)
    Anthony Warlow definitely had very coherent idea on his performance. It's interesting to watch. Cudia is obviously great. Jöback the same, his queer vibe really does the job for me, it's refreshing.
    And the one and only Michael Crawford, he's just special. Ghastly, very vulnerable, and romantic. His voice's unique, it has this depth, operatic vibe and is extremely expressive. By looking at his acting choices you can clearly see Michael deeply empathised with Erik.

    • @hoodedcrows8966
      @hoodedcrows8966  ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Thank you! I agree 100%, Hugh's acting is so multi-faceted, he gives Erik a much more child-like vulnerable side while also being scary when he wants to be. Also with Jöback I often see people say that he "doesn't sound like the Phantom", but I disagree- I think the "lightness" of his voice brings him the same kind of "creepy-yet-still an angel of music" kind of vibe.
      Michael Crawford of course is unparalleled, I wish there were more clips of him!
