    Note: In Maya 2023, Booleans have changed a bit. To use them as this video shows, do the following:
    1.) When using the Union command, click the small square icon next to the tool to open the options window.
    2.) Set "Input object display" to "Hidden"
    00:00 - Introduction and model breakdown
    00:40 - Transforming a primitive sphere (using the Toolbox)
    00:54 - Adding a booster (using Component Mode)
    02:35 - Adding a porthole (adding divisions to an object)
    04:52 - Adding a nose cone (using Soft Select)
    07:00 - Adding fins (using Deformers)
    11:10 - Duplicating the fins around the rocket

    • @NavyGatorMyEye
      @NavyGatorMyEye 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Dhroov BMX Nonlinear deformers automatically apply themselves to selected geometry along the Y axis (vertically). He built his shape so that the extra edge loops were along the X axis (horizontally). See the result at 8:25 - the deformer (represented by the green line) is perpendicular to the object. Normally when you are deforming things, you rotate them to line up with the object first, then play with the start and end settings, etc., to deform it. When you do it that way it won't deform until you make changes to the settings, which is probably the way you should do it when you're first starting to play with them. He made changes first to show that it didn't give him the shape he wanted and then rotated it to show that it would change the shape when you rotate and translate, cool extra features but not so clear for someone new to it.

    I am a bit confused. I get that the Maya tools are super handy to deform the shapes for the handles but... how would you know that rotating it a little or moving it will yield the result you wanted? Thanks in advance.

    • @Autodesk_Maya
      @Autodesk_Maya  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The deformation region will always act predictably relative to the handle, so in fact, it's actually your best way of controlling it. For example, flares always occur at the very ends of the Flare deformer, so I need to rotate the object so that the parts I want to flare are at either end. Meanwhile, the bend of a Bend Deformer always takes place in the middle (in fact, you can even see a curve on the handle itself denoting the exact bend), so it's just a matter of placing where I want that bend to happen.

    Hi! Really good video. I want to rotate the first leg of the rocket, but I don't want to deform the piece anymore. Is there any way to rotate the piece like 90º, 180º withput doing the deform? I only want to rotate normally. Thanks!

      So the only way I have found is to duplicate the "leg" with Shift + left button and then the new leg is a normal piece.

      Pol Galea You can also group the leg with the deformed handle, then rotate the group.

    I'm quite a ways into maya at this point but I find myself coming back to this vid as you explain some of the tools very well. Today I needed the duplicate special for something and knew that you'd show it in this video, very useful, very powerful, and helpful, thanks.
