Absolutely fantastic video, I have long been a fan of the C16 and plus4. Criminally undervalued systems that thankfully found their loyal user base. I am in the UK and a fair few of my friends had either a plus4 or a C16 I enjoyed using them but didn’t own one until a while later but now I have 3 C16’s one expanded to 64k and one plus4 and I love them all to bits. To me the 264 series shows people in very sharp focus the fantastic programmers based predominantly in Hungary and Germany etc, some of the achievements here are absolutely unreal and get very little coverage in the UK media which really grinds my gears. Genius programmers are not confined to Japan, UK and the USA - as these great games prove. Plus4 World proves that the 264 series of Commodore computers has one of the most loyal and talented user groups out of all the 8bit systems.
264 serie is what zx spectrum had to be, a c16 with 64 ram exp is superior in quite every way if coded well onto sinclair...e.g. no colour clashing, vast and versatile colour palette, decent sound chip (compared to 16k or 48k zx models). with clever programming skills and a SID cartridge plus 4 could stand against c64, due to better color palette and improved basic, and even against nes or atari 8 bit line.
I'm really impressed. Thought that there were very few games which took advantage of the Plus 4's additional capability. Even the sound on some of them is not terrible by any means. The increased colour palette even makes some of them look more pleasing than the C64 variants.
I had a C16 then Plus 4. Some of the games are beyond c64 territory almost Amiga quality. I wish my local store stocked but a fraction of these games. I just watched a video on 100/150+ Plus 4 games. Admittedly local stores stocked a few good ones mostly C16 and Plus4 games. But in the 100/150 games video where they showed 10 secs of many games good and shit alike - I saw stuff that blow my mind today I never knew could be done. The C64 is the most stocked gaming platform to the exclusion of anything else - but some of the games available just weren't available if they didn't work on the c16 - but many Plus 4 games were just in a league beyond C64 - and with good audio on some of them these platforms were ridiculed for not having a SID chip - but even no SID some of the Audio I've seen is really good where coders knew how to make the most of its 3 voices. Back in the late 80's I even saw code to sample analogue audio. The sample required tweaked hardware and I was 12 and the code was huge by my perspective, but play back possible with just the right software. But the games I see on these retro lookbacks I wish I had access to this software back then - I remeber spending good oney on some very shit titles - having no idea that there was dedicated plus 4 software even the c64 could not produce but was only available to Amiga users. I wish I still had a Plus 4 - if you have one and a dataset and 5.25 games I got cash. Just to have one and experience what I missed I loved those machines - even the C16. Pity the sheep loved the c64
We had one too, I don't know whether my father sold it or binned it, I presume he sold it on because although not a very popular system it was still the days when most home computer users had 8-bits in the UK. I know we sold our Amiga 500 when we got the A1200, then the A1200 was sold circa 2000/2001 while I was at university. I often wondered who bought them and if they got as much enjoyment out of them as we had done.
Csavargás a gombák birodalmában te JézusAtyaÚrIsten!
Some of these games are quite impressive for a system with no sprites. The sound is kind of a mixed bag though. Some of them sound pretty good while others are downright annoying.
Időutazás,még megvan a plusim, rengeteg játékot újságot készítettünk rá. Már a a plusi is Microsd kártyával üzemel, mint az Amigák(Gotek). R.I.P. Skoro a videóban is mennyi jó játéka szerepelt.
This was a really overlooked machine that was basically sabotaged by Commodore. For the money, it was one of the best machines in the market. Ok, so no sprites and no SID, but 128 colors and decent sound. Way better than a Spectrum ZX or an Apple II. If you truly knew how to take advantage of the machine it gives the C64 a run for its money. It was a stupid release by Commodore, but the lack of developer support is what really killed it. It could have been a successful "first computer" if marketed right.
Not overlooked but ignored due to the stupidness of its concept. what was Commodore really thinking? As voted by the consumer, not much. Founder and CEO left almost immediately after introduction. I remember buying a mag back in the day for the big release and just being utterly dumb founded at such an unwanted product that literally no one asked for.
Man so many memories, about 35 years ago by now... was looking for some games I can remember like: -Annihilator -Lode Runner -Treasure Island -Tomb Thumb -Mr. Puniverse -Timeslip -Skramble -Varmit or Trail Blazer, but also recognized the one at 5:20, anyone knows the name of it please? Thanks a looot for the video, will continue watching now :)
I think we had just the games which came with the system; I can only remember Treasure Island and Icicle Works, both of which I enjoyed. I remember completing Treasure Island, with the pirate chasing you back to the start. Although I don't remember ever seeing the game you refer to at that time stamp, it's interesting that it includes a rather nice rendition of a tune which I can't quite place - I think it was a Beatles song or by one of their group in a solo capacity. Is it the John Lennon one that goes "I read the news today, oh boy..."? @8:21 there's another nice bit of music, I love that tune.
yes true...due to 121 colors of ted and same screen resolution. to do static scenes or painting/pixel art TED is better, but it lacks VIC II hardware assisted sprites, collision and scrolling, things that made c64 fortune....and it has no SID (another killing feature). imho a plus4 with SID cartridge and good programming skills could do really 8 bit wizardry.
Plus 4 owners unite! An underrated machine that could do magic in the right hands.

Wow ! I owned a plus4 back in the days.... but this computer only in this era rescued its revenge..... no games in the 80's for 64k
I remember being very sad when buying a game for my Plus/4, at the amount of C64 games in comparison.
Another great home computer from my childhood sadly sold on. Hope it found a good home

Wasn't this the one that was originally supposed to $49 to compete head to head with the Spectrum in that market? Or was it the C16?

but hey I was a big fan of my TS1000 back in the day in spite of it having no redeeming quantity but price.
It could have been fun but I owned a C64 already. It was more than enough.
What really killed this machine was the underpowered versions like the C=16. Programmers rarely used the increased memory of the Plus/4.
the plus 4 has a nice colour palette
I really should take my Plus/4 out of the closet! I didn't even know there *were* 100 games for the thing!
Thousands... Check out the link!

Great video. Why on Earth did the TED chip have soft-scroll capabilities and 121 colours if not for games? Productivity my ass..

No sprites or SID but could still put out a decent game!
Wow! I didn’t know there were so many Plus/4 games now. Back in the 1980s I had ACE, Mercenary and a bunch of pretty lame commodore 16 games.
8:00, what is that game? Can't make out that name on the title screen at all.

A lot of these C64 and spectrum games were not available on the Plus/4. Have they been ported in the last few years or is this a mistake?

No and Yes. No hardware sprites but had much more colors.

4:33 Why a clashing is there? It looks like center by ZX and border by Commodore. )
No hardware sprites. So some games had a bit of color clash going on.
OleeeeEEE 😁👍🕹️🇪🇸
What's the name of the racing game at 2:56?
plus4world.powweb.com/software/CarTeD
Very few of them games are c16+4
The Commodore Plus/4 is what the Commodore 64 should have been.
They could have made the plus 4 a C64 beater if they wanted to
If only they had ROM'd GEOS into the Plus 4
For me this machine is more pleasing than the c64.
