I grew up with a C64 and it's an absolute delight seeing how so many amazing games are being developed for it right now, some of them showing that the C64 could do so much more than we ever imagined. the only true limitation or problem I see with the C64 is that it only uses one button. but a new controller with remapped keys into the buttons could solve that. I hope new developers start using that resource.
Actually you can add (at least) two more individual fire buttons (via the potentiometer lines). These have been used in some software already back in the commercial days of the C64, for example for the C64 mouse and a few games too (mostly 2 buttons there). Today there are 2 button patches for a number of classic games, but some of the more recent releases support up to 3 buttons from the start (like e. g. MW Ultra, Super Mario Bros.). There are some recent controllers that have that featres for the C64 available for purchase. I use a wireless dedicated gamepad that has those 3 buttons plus a fourth one for remapping the joystick up positiion.
Great video as always OSG! I can't go past the fact you put Impossible Mission in 29th especially considering some of the games you put ahead of it. It's your list of course but I have to make my case for Impossible Mission as it truly is an exceptional game on the platform: A) there's more depth than you think. It generally has two major gameplay modes: 1) exploration/map-completion/puzzle piece collection. 2) Passcode deciphering. Working towards these goals is really rewarding, and here are a few other things that make it great: - while the room designs don't change, almost everything else in the game is randomised making it infinitely re-playable. - first class graphics, sounds, player and robot movement and animation, and gameplay mechanics It is hard, but you can beat the game repeatedly using the following strategy once you can reasonably control how often you die: 1) you need to collect 36 puzzle pieces to win the game, keep exploring the map until you collect them all 2) forget about solving the Passcode until you've got them all 3) Search each room as much as you can without dying too much (this is the key because dying takes time away from your deadline to win) 4) if a room is too hard to get to all the places to search without dying too much, use snoozes, or make a note of the room's position on the map so you can come back later with a snooze 5) Once you've finished the map, count your puzzle pieces and see how many you need to get 36 6) start going back over the rooms you marked until you get all 36, but go to the password rooms and collect more snoozes on the way (you should have noted these too, including Attombender's room) 7) Once you have all the pieces, start solving password letter puzzles - each letter in the password has four pieces that fit together. If you complete one but it doesn't give you the letter, keep changing its rotation until it clicks. Those pieces will now disappear from your inventory. 8) Once you have the password, go unlock Attombender's room for the win. Sounds complicated? Well that's what I mean, more depth than you think. Such a great game! Great vid again.

Great list. I used to play Impossible Mission a lot! Honorable mentions for games that I used to play are The Human Race, Lode Runner, Aztec Challenge, Mr. Do, Leaderboard Golf and Transformers (Terrible game I know but I was 7 at the time). They are just a few that I can remember. There was another one but I can't remember the name. You flew a plane and had dogfights with others above an Aircraft Carrier. It wasn't one of those that were trying to be realistic. You could see your plane and it was tiny. Great game nevertheless. 👍
Great list. I'd have included one of the Leader board golf games. It started the power and snap control method that is still being used in golf games. For a system as limited as the C64 they are really good games. I was hooked on them as a kid and still occasionally play them today.
Definitely. World Class Leaderboard against my best friend was probably the game we played the most. Introduced trees and bunkers over the weird islands of grass in water of the first so the courses finally felt like they could be real.
@@hazy33 yes indeed 😁. The introduction of the punch shot was good too and the added challenge on the hardest level when the putting gauge disappears. I have the tape version of World Class Leaderboard where every hole loads separately taking around 10 seconds to load each hole. Pretty good list but the first Last Ninja imho should be number one and the sequel number two. Labyrinth isn't even in the list which was an amazing graphic adventure for its time. All in all, thanks for the great memories!

Mail Order Monsters should have made the list. It was ahead of its time for features. The first game to have character development/upgrades (multiple creatures for each player name) that could be saved for future games and usable for both two player or single player. Many people never explored or found this feature as it was not available on easy or intermediate level, you had to play on the difficult setting to allow saving of monsters for future matches. Edit: Wizzball should have also made the list.
Yes! Below The Root was such a revolutionary game (maybe the first ever 'action RPG'?), and perhaps inspired games like Zelda, afterwards (i played BTR before Zelda, as a kid, and i love both...both such whimsical adventures, for the time).
Great to see you giving Martin a shout out OSG, an awesome channel full of passion and he is a top top guy who I’ve had the pleasure to meet a few time now and proud to call a good friend Love to watch these videos seeing games from the other side (I grew up with the speccy) so that will always be my number 1 but I do love playing the other micros Some really interesting games I need to get onto my c64 maxi

I hope Martin gets some traction as well, awesome bloke, awesome channel and a good friend, top stuff mate, awesome video!!
Great video! I know you're not in to role-playing-games, otherwise you might have included gems like the Ultima or the D&D Gold Box series. RPGs aside, I would have included Paradroid, Bruce Lee and Archon.
Interesting video, I have used the 64 but not played the games. It is good to see that games are still being made for it. I don’t play now, but I’ll keep on watching channels like yours.
Loads on the list I owned back in the day. Loved the epyx summer , winter games the graphics stunning So many great homebrew releases too that I need to check out
Very cool list and brilliant video. I miss Creatures2, wizard of wor, mayhem in monsterland only. And from your list one exception is Sonic, as it cannot run on a basic c64.
@@oldstylegaming for me rather like amiga with mem expansion only. But yes, still a c64, i hope once i have a reu or similar, and i can try to run Sonic. Great job!
Great choices. I would have had CREATURES in there somewhere personally. And don't forget to wait until the title music ends. Change joystick port and waggle like crazy until Clyde turns grey. Infinite lives😍
Can't believe you missed Elite, Lords Of Midnight, Paradroid, Uridium, Infiltrator, Spy Vs Spy, Way Of The Exploding Fist, Green Beret, Racing Destruction Set.....
Oooh, I remember The Train: Escape to Normandy, just awesome, with the different parts! Very immersive. (Also love Zak McKracken, Maniac Mansion , Stunt car racer and Pirates. Great games. )
Cool picks! Interesting lack of CRPGs, a genre which dominated the "AAA" game scene here in the USA. Also interesting that one (mostly) BASIC game made it into your list, but that's not TOO surprising considering how great Pirates is. CRPG development has continued in the modern era, which is a bit surprising considering the vast amount of effort they require (compared to other types of game). I mean ... the amount of effort put into something like Ultima IV Remastered or Eye of the Beholder is mind numbing, not to mention the effort required to put together an original CRPG of significant scale. I'm not into most platformers, so I'd easily slot in Ultima IV over many in your list. (Personally, I prefer the single colored tiles of the original, over the more Ultima V style pixel art of Ultima IV Remastered.)
I agree with you with rpg's as the C64 greats. Its almost impossible to compare Bard's Tale , Pool of Radiance and my personal fav Ultima 5 to any thing arcade like. You need a separate list, one I'd like to see cause lists like this let me see all the good stuff I missed
@@El_Guapo74 There are a ton of mostly overlooked CRPGs and proto-CRPGs. Of course, they aren't as good as the big popular ones, but they can still be interesting for what they were. The big problem with trying to compile a list of them is that they usually take some deep diving to even see if there's something special or noteworthy to them. It's often not obvious how to "get" what you're supposed to do or what the interesting challenge is.
The Usagi Yojimbo title screen is messed up in this video. It's supposed to say "Usagi Yojimbo", but in this video it just says "Usagi". I played this one all the time as a kid as I was (and still am) a fan of the comics. When I bought it in the USA it was just called "Usagi Yojimbo", not "Samurai Warrior...". This was one of the few games I actually beat as a kid. There was a smartphone Usagi Yojimbo game a few years ago, but it was not very good.
Frankie Goes to Hollywood was an awesome game I spent many hours trying to complete with an awesome soundtrack and numerous mini games, it's one of the best.
Nice list! So many great games on the C64, I suppose you could have a number of these top 30s. I thought the Defender copy, Guardian, was awesome. Loved Boulder Dash. Pitstop was engrossing, really felt like a race, clever game. And there was a scrolling pinball game that I played for hours on end (recently rediscovered via emulation). Good work, OSG!
@@oldstylegaming thanks will try that. Want to get this running on amiga mini. My brother and me completed this as kids. I was second player flying the orbit. Two player games where awesome back in the day. Battle Squadron on the Amiga was amazing. I was only 13 at the time and was splicing wires together to get the game running on two tv’s at the same time. Extension cable for one joystick. So my brother and myself could play the game together in different bedrooms. My brother was one of the first people to get a Japanese sega megadrive in U.K. I remember seeing ghouls n ghosts for the megadrive for first time and being blown away by it. I was like that to myself it’s finally here a home console just as good as the arcade. The sega megadrive three button controller was awesome. Kids nowadays won’t understand what it was like. It’s all we had at the time and it was awesome.
What I appreciate about the Commodore 64 is that unlike Nintendo, Jack Tramiel pretty much let anyone make games for the C64 without having to worry about any kind of licensing fee. Commodore was a hardware company, and the availability of a huge library of games would drive sales of the C64 and give them a huge chunk of market share.
Here I was racking my brains to remember a favorite game from my youth and voila! Ultimate Wizard …much obliged, good sir and keep up the great work :)
You may want to consider a few more great Arcade bar games that C-64 was able to replicate: Salamander, R-Type, Barbarian II, New Zeland story, Hawkeye. Double Dragon.
fantastic video - must have been tough sam's journey lived up to the hype prince of persia was magnificent ln2's soundtrack was the best i agree & stuntcar racer still astounds me to this day
What about Pogo Joe? Raid Over Moscow? Bruce Lee? Pool of Radiance? Jumpman Junior? Lots of great games on your list but those should be up there too! :)
Well, I had a C64 growing up, and when you said the graphics are amazing for the first time in this video, I thought eh, not really. But then you got to IK+, Turrican and TLN2 and I can't deny they look, sound and play fantastic, and that reminded me: A good game is a game that you want to come back to. Any other factors only aid in making a game great. Edit: And to make it absolutely clear, there are many C64-games I love to come back to every now and again. Personal favourites include Zack McKracken, Maniac Mansion, Wintergames, TLN2, Commando, Cauldron 2, IK and IK+, Boulderdash 1-3, Spy vs Spy, Bop 'n Rumble and Rock 'n Wrestle.
some years ago I saw a cmd64 enthutiast make his own RTS game on the CMD64 right here on youtube. It was apparantly hailed as being really good. I forgot the name of him and the game he made sadly.
Solid list. I'd include M.U.L.E., Archon, Bruce Lee, Wizball, Sword of Fargoal. Honorable mentions: Mayhem in Monsterland, Defender of the Crown, Leaderboard Golf, Hardball, Pitstop II, Kickstart II, Racing Destruction Set, Jumpman/Jumpman Jr, Raid Over Bungling Bay, Raid Over Moscow, Beachhead. You already have WInter Games, but California Games and World Games I'd consider as equals. If including nostolgia: Test Drive, Temple of Apshai, Might & Magic, Outrun, GI Joe, Ghostbusters So many more could easily be included...lol
A few C64 games I remember from when I was 5-7 yrs old that I don't often see mentioned: Patton vs Rommel: strategy turn-based war game ("fog of war"). Perhaps part of why I fell in love with StarCraft 10 years later. F15 Strike Eagle: I know Gunship was better, but as a young kid I found F15 easier to play. Roger Rabbit: most frustrating game of my childhood, partly because it took a long time to load every time I died. GI Joe: I can't find this one online, and may have been a different computer/system, but I remember I really enjoyed this game around 1988-90. I believe it was a fighting game, like Mortal Kombat.... I see other versions of GI Joe, but not the one I remember. Dig-Dug: What is better than burrowing into a German flag and then using a taser on bugs? Treasure Island: mostly text-based adventure. "Go North," "Open Window", "Pick up candle," etc. Batman Dino Eggs: ...and spiders dropping down. Anyone else play these games for C64?
it was mate, there are loads of games that if i let myself get clouded by memories would have been in here...like Kikstart 2 etc. but are they really great games now..... maybe not
I owned a C64 back in the day and it had some amazing games, but some of the modern games here are off the chart. I didn't realise games were still being made for it. Don't know how some of these games were made on such limited hardware.
I know they are opinions, Glad to see Gunship and Bubble Bobble in there. Shame no creatures game, speedball 2, Ghostbusters, Platoon or Ikari warriors, which I alsways thought was the better game over commando.

Yes! Below The Root was such a revolutionary game (maybe the first ever 'action RPG'?), and perhaps inspired games like Zelda, afterwards (i played BTR before Zelda, as a kid, and i love both...both such whimsical adventures, for the time).
Great to see you giving Martin a shout out OSG, an awesome channel full of passion and he is a top top guy who I’ve had the pleasure to meet a few time now and proud to call a good friend
Love to watch these videos seeing games from the other side (I grew up with the speccy) so that will always be my number 1 but I do love playing the other micros
Some really interesting games I need to get onto my c64 maxi
Yeah Martin's a good un mate but ill promote anyone who puts the effort in that i know
Sam's Journey deserves first place. brilliant game.
Sam's journey isn't legit as it's a bootleg of Mayhem in Monsterland. At least make a reference to the original game if you're going with a bootleg.
@@MultiScooter68 r´you kidding??? anyone who has played both games can realize that Mayhem in Mosterland is only a shadow of Sam´s Journey is!!
Thak you sir, you really make me wish I had space to set up my c64. Maybe someday soon
Get it set up man
WOW, what a collection of games here mate, even a couple I’ve not played which is awesome and yes, all my faves are in here even gunship!
Phew, glad stunt car racer made it, the best c64 racer ever!!
LN2, just that music alone gives me goosebumps, brilliant.
Fair point on sonic, we need more REU’s, still it’s stunning to play via other means.
Ah, glad to see the No1, stunning game, the absolute best that’s ever been made on the c64, I can’t see it ever being bettered.
I hope Martin gets some traction as well, awesome bloke, awesome channel and a good friend, top stuff mate, awesome video!!
he is a great bloke and a quality channel too
Thank you buddy!
@@oldstylegaming I dont think I can say it enough but thank you.
@@TheHobbyLodge you dont need to say thankyou mate, its like 2 seconds of my time to splice this into a video, hope you get more subs you deserve them
Love that you paint models too. we share some good hobbies! C64 games and painting..
Great video! I know you're not in to role-playing-games, otherwise you might have included gems like the Ultima or the D&D Gold Box series. RPGs aside, I would have included Paradroid, Bruce Lee and Archon.
Nothing like a top 10/20/30 list on YT to bring folks out of the woodwork to let you know your objective opinion is wrong. These are all solid games!
Great list!
Gutz and Midnight Resistance probably deserve their spot!
There is a hidden gem called Highway Encounter. It doesn't have a lot of replayability but original. Winter Games. Spy vs Spy, Archon 2 etc.
Great list will be checking out the games myself. Might find a new favorite! Thank you!
Interesting video, I have used the 64 but not played the games. It is good to see that games are still being made for it. I don’t play now, but I’ll keep on watching channels like yours.
Needs a bit more Eye of the Beholder in it, but yeah, great list! :D
Loads on the list I owned back in the day. Loved the epyx summer , winter games the graphics stunning
So many great homebrew releases too that I need to check out
Great list! There are quite a few new games I need to try.
Agree with Sam's Journey, its the equivalent of Mario 3 for the c64. I hope those developers are working on a sequel
Impossible Mission was to hard for me too back then. I still played it fairly often to listen to the scream of the guy falling off a ledge.
Very cool list and brilliant video. I miss Creatures2, wizard of wor, mayhem in monsterland only. And from your list one exception is Sonic, as it cannot run on a basic c64.
Still a c64 game though, i mean its a bit like discounting aga games on the amiga cos they dont run on a a500, a600
@@oldstylegaming for me rather like amiga with mem expansion only.
Can't believe you missed Elite, Lords Of Midnight, Paradroid, Uridium, Infiltrator, Spy Vs Spy, Way Of The Exploding Fist, Green Beret, Racing Destruction Set.....
commando, hulsbeck soundtrack???? think mr hubbard would have something to say about that osg!!!!
Yeah, given the popularity of Rob Hubbard it had me wondering how anyone familiar with the C64 could get that wrong. ;D
Oooh, I remember The Train: Escape to Normandy, just awesome, with the different parts! Very immersive.
(Also love Zak McKracken, Maniac Mansion , Stunt car racer and Pirates. Great games. )
There were so many games for the Commodore 64 that were awesome it must have been hard to choose just 30 games.
If at least one game by Sarah Jane Avory didn't appear on this left, it would've been a crying shame! So it's good to see an entry.
Soul Force is awesome mate, probably the best 8bit shooter...alongside the likes of Space Manbow
I absolutely love it I got you to play slicks on a live stream. And now you consider it a top 30 game. Remember when you had no clue it existed haha x
Yeah mate cant believe id never played it...what an absolute cracker of a game it is
Good stuff man, thank you ❤
Frankie Goes to Hollywood was an awesome game I spent many hours trying to complete with an awesome soundtrack and numerous mini games, it's one of the best.
Some of my favourites are Bruce Lee, FIST 2, Jammin', Paradroid and Wizball. Played those for hours at a time :)
Anyone know where you can get Katakis / Denaris one tape rom. Being on two tapes I can’t get it to run.
can you not use D64 files?
Games that come to my memory that weren’t listed were: Bill & Teds, Burgertime, Archon, and Ghostbusters.
I'm shocked that Elite isn't on this list.
The game was ground-breaking and had an amazing opening song.
Yeah the keyword there is "was" ... it was great yeah but compared to these hasnt aged well in my opinion
Just ordered a C64 mini, need that good old 8 bit Nostalgia Hit!! 🤟🏻
A fantastic array of C64 goodness. If this video doesn't finaly nail what was the best ever 8-bit micro what the hell will!? Great vid m8 :)
True that mare i cant think any of the others could knock out such a solid list
Nice list. Plenty on there I've never played
Here I was racking my brains to remember a favorite game from my youth and voila! Ultimate Wizard …much obliged, good sir and keep up the great work :)
Glad to be of service ;-)
You may want to consider a few more great Arcade bar games that C-64 was able to replicate: Salamander, R-Type, Barbarian II, New Zeland story, Hawkeye. Double Dragon.
Double Dragon was horrendous on the c64... So bad the developers put a note in the original big box game apologising for how bad it was
@ ohh I didn’t remember that note on the beautiful big box
fantastic video - must have been tough
sam's journey lived up to the hype
prince of persia was magnificent
ln2's soundtrack was the best i agree
& stuntcar racer still astounds me to this day
Is there a name of the tune at 0.10?
Ocean Loader One, by Martin Galway.
Gunship; did you have the option to balance power between rotors and jets?
Best for me was Giana Sisters and The Last Ninja.....great vid zthx 4 the memories
Subbed to your friends channel, looks great
Knights of Bytes ARE working on a port of Sam's Journey for the NES
What about Pogo Joe? Raid Over Moscow? Bruce Lee? Pool of Radiance? Jumpman Junior? Lots of great games on your list but those should be up there too! :)
Fort Apocalypse and Oil's Well are my favorites.
Some awesome games on that list, and many childhood memories. Just surprised you put Katakis so low ;)
In my head I had it top 5 :-) but dont tell no one
Great stuff as always OSG but now that A pig quest is out I am afraid you have to do it again!
If including nostolgia: Test Drive, Temple of Apshai, Might & Magic, Outrun, GI Joe, Ghostbusters
So many more could easily be included...lol
Yeah theres loads or substitutes that could be made and it would still be a solid list
When are the amazing things about project fire start is that it basically has all the features of a survival horror before Resident Evil did it.
No "Raid over Moscow"!? Hands down the best C64 game ever made imo!
My brother had an Amiga. I had the 64! Pretty cool childhood
@8:12 I believe you mistook Chris Huelsbeck for Rob Hubbard (the composer of Commando on C64)
Yeah i realised after.. it was right in the script but said huelsbeck by accident
A few C64 games I remember from when I was 5-7 yrs old that I don't often see mentioned:
Patton vs Rommel: strategy turn-based war game ("fog of war").
Batman
Dino Eggs: ...and spiders dropping down.
Anyone else play these games for C64?
This must of been a tough list to make
it was mate, there are loads of games that if i let myself get clouded by memories would have been in here...like Kikstart 2 etc. but are they really great games now..... maybe not
I owned a C64 back in the day and it had some amazing games, but some of the modern games here are off the chart.
Platoon was the first game I ever loaded up on my C64 nostalgia overload
Great upload Matey 👊🏻😁🇦🇺🍻🍻
Glad you enjoyed it
Sword of Kadash, Modem Wars, Battle Command (rare) were my favorites.
Interesting... The only games I played back in the day from this list was The Last Ninja and IK+. My list would have had Monty on the Run, Uridium and Paradoid in the mix....
I'd also suggest MW Ultra
Yeah they good but I think very similar to Steel Ranger and for me that game is a bit better, great games the the MW series
Even with the Psytronik titles included (no Knight & Grail?), I cannot take any list lacking Armalyte, Retrograde, Creatures, Mayhem in Monsterland or Wizball too seriously.
