    Hi Curtis, I'm just starting with my new Tascam DR60mkll and your video helped a lot! Things are much clearer now and although I still need to read through all the instructions, I already know how to us the Tascam in a very basic way following your video.
    Many thanks for taking the time to explain all this!

    I recently bought a Rode ntg4+ and connected it right to the recorder. Im not getting anything, I have the power on on the mic. And on the main screen I don't see anything indicating that it is receiving audio (those black bars that move as you talk). I set my settings to mono, and now I don't know what else to do

      LivinLikeBlackLarry hi Larry. Do other mics work with the same cable and recorder? You'll want to follow the signal chain from microphone to SD card and test all the possible places along the way that may cause the problem.

    Thank you Curtis :) Regarding the DR60, can I record 2 lav mics and shotgun mic in an iso track mode? I feel like I’d need a device with more inputs for this like the Zoom 6 or 8 …?

      Yes, it will record two "stereo" files with the XLR1 and XLR2 in the first and the Left and Right of the 3.5mm input on the second file.

    I know this is 4 years old but I am doing exactly this for live youtube. I record in the Tascam 60d mk2 to make smaller videos later, but the live doesn't sound professional enough. With the AKG SE300b with CK93, I am thinking of not using the tascam anymore..... is there a better recorder to go straight into a computer now?

      A Sound Devices MixPre-3 II would be a good choice. If you will always be recording to computer, an audio interface costs less and can do a great job.

    Hi Curtis,
    I joined your,"Learn Light and sound" and it is amazing. I have a Tascam 701D and have a question that I may have overlooked in your courses, yet the manual doesn't really explain. In the input of the tascam, When the SEL is "Ext In" and gain can only be Low, Mid, Hi, Hi+, but when the SEL is "In 1-2" I get the "Line" option. Do I want to use the Line Option in the gain when I am recording from a Mixer at a conference? Does it matter if I use SEL "Ext In" or "1-2"? Lastly, does line just cause me to lose control of gain giving all control to the mixer? I guess my big question is, "What exactly is the line for and how do i use it correctly?"
    If you can better explain this or point me to the video in your course, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

    • @LearnLightAndSoundSessions
      @LearnLightAndSoundSessions  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nick, I hope you received my response over on the other video where you left the same comment. If not, line level does not need further amplification which is why the gain option disappears. The signal coming from the mixer is already amplified up to line level. Best wishes!

    Hello Curtis,
    Thank you so much for the session learned a lot. Based on your previous video reviews on Tascam DR60D MK II and Rode NTG2, I just ordered from B&H, plus the boom and the Blimp. Since I don't have it right now. I should be getting by the end of the week.
    On other forums some people mentioned that Rode NTG2 is not very strong in pick up/weak input signal, and if you push the gain up you get more noise so your end up working more in the post. They suggested I buy "FetHead". Currently, I don't have all the stuff on hand so I don’t even know where to begin.
    Would you suggest I should buy this pre amp adaptor also? I thought Tascam DR60D MK II is a preamp/recorder that should eliminate that problem without doing too much work in the post.
    From the above Video session you mentioned briefly regarding a course, where would I find it or where should I sign up. Thank you so much for your time. I know you keep getting repeated questions, but greatly appreciated.
    -Kevin

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kevin, I have had good luck with the NTG2 and the Tascam DR-60DmkII together. I think people who record with the Zoom H4n have more problems because its preamps are not as strong/clean. No need for the FEThead since you'll have the Tascam recorder.

    hello, i like the video! could you please explain what the difference is on the dr-60mk2 camera out (low) and camera out (high) 3.5mm output jacks? is the camera out (low) set on level 10 still lower in output then camera out (high) set to level 1?

      Camera out low is to send audio to cameras which have microphone inputs. Camera out high is for cameras which have a line level input.

    Sorry. Tried looking through comments for an answer 1st but didn't see it. I'm using multiple mics on the tascam mkii. How do I record to individual tracks/files? I keep running into everything being on one track. I'm using lavs with 1/4"and shotgun with xlr.

    • @LearnLightAndSoundSessions
      @LearnLightAndSoundSessions  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      REC MODE -> Dual Stereo (or 4CH if using both XLR inputs plus the 3.5mm Input)
      SOURCE -> CH 1/2
      That will put them all into one file with each mic input on a separate channel within that file. You can then break them apart in post.

    Hi Curtis, with the Tascam DR-60, is it possible to feed four separate microphones into the unit? (Say a 2 person interview where each person has a boom and lav). How do you physically connect the 2 lav mic's when there is only one 3.5mm input? cheers

    • @LearnLightAndSoundSessions
      @LearnLightAndSoundSessions  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, it is possible, but only with a rather complicated setup. The 3.5mm input on the DR-60 is a stereo input (which is why they call it channels 3 and 4). It can only be set to low, high, or high+ gain settings. There isn't an option for line level. So, you'll either need to use another mixer which can output a mic level signal or use an attenuating cable. Or, you could use a two-headed lavalier mic. These are rare. Giant Squid makes one but the mics have a cardioid polar pattern which is not ideal for general purpose lavaliers. You can check them here: darren-nemeth.squarespace.com/cardioid-stereo-microphone/ There may be others out there and a simple splitter may also work but you won't have the option to adjust each mic separately.
      If you're planning to use wireless for the lavalier mics, you might consider one of the stereo receivers from Sony which will feed both channels on a single 3.5mm TRS plug. We had a look at these last year at NAB and they looked interesting though they're not cheap: th-cam.com/video/bFUuGu4g5KU/w-d-xo.html
      Good luck!

    Hi Curtis, Thank you for this video. Recently i've been encountering an issue with the tascam dr 60. I was recording my audio with the rodelink film maker kit (2 lavalier mic) each mic to each channel ( channel 1 and 2). However i realised that channel 2's audio always gets a cleaner sound compared to channel 1 eventhough the gain levels are the same and the settings are the same. Do you happen to know why?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Yvonne, I'm sorry I don't. If all the gain settings are identical on both the RODELink and the Tascam, then it would seem that there's a problem somewhere in the signal chain. Try swapping out the cables between the RODELink and Tascam to see if there's a pattern there. Also, I'd try feeding both RODELinks (one at a time) directly to camera to confirm that they're both sending the same signal level. May need to contact support if that doesn't pan out. Good luck!

      Hi EpiVegan, in the input setting menu, you turn on Ch1 by setting the gain for your mic (I usually start with mid), Limiter: Mono, Low Cut: Off, Delay: Ref.
      Do the same for channel 2. Good luck!

    Curtis,
    Is it better with sound devices mix pre-d before going to tascam DR 60d MKII? Or it won't make any difference? Thank you

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lexian, I think that depends on which problem you're looking to solve by adding the mix pre-d. If you need the protection an analogue limiter can provide or need more gain for a mic which doesn't have the strongest output or you prefer a little more bass in your dialogue recordings then it can definitely make a positive difference. It is a little more work because then you have two devices rather than just one (which means you need to keep on top of batteries for two devices). But overall, yes, the audio quality can improve and help you deal with really loud bursts of sound.

    • @transition59
      @transition59 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Mix Pre D has the best preamp and limiter and will certainly quietly sort out your audio signal before it is recorded to the Tascam DR60D mk11.The trouble is that the Tascam will probably never release your xlr connector. Its a fatal flaw, and the reason the Tascam ( a good recorder) is sold at a surprisingly low price. so be aware that any xlr you plug in will probably never come out. I have my two devices connected like Siamese twins, third-party power options are essential, and available cheap on amazon Sound devices power adapters are crazy prices.

    Hi Curtis I am using a Tascam DR 60D MKII for the first time. How do I set up a boom mic and 2 lavs for audio recording and mixing?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which types of connectors do the lavalier mics have? If they both have 3.5mm inputs and are not wireless, we may have a challenge. If at least one of them has an XLR output, that should work fine with the DR-60DmkII. Use the same things we covered in this video turning on all 4 channels and set the gain as described for each microphone. Good luck!

      I'll know by this Thursday. But let's just they are wireless. Also I have a dinkum gorilla pod arm for my h4n and I attach it to my boom pole. Does the tascam have a quarter inch screw hole at the bottom?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, ok. Hopefully at least one of them will have an XLR output. That'll keep things much simpler. If they don't a RODE VXLR adapter should do the job for a wireless system (but not for connecting a lavalier directly to the recorder): amzn.to/2pVtIM8
      Yes, the Tascam has a 1/4-20 tap on the bottom of the recorder.

      I just checked with my RODE VMP and DR-60D and it is working here. In the Rec Mode menu you'll set the Rec Mode to Stereo and the source to Ch 3/4. Then in the Input Settings menu, scroll down to the Ch 3/4 page and set the gain to High. Adjust the fader knob on the Tascam to adjust from there. The VXLR adapter should also work, you'll just want to use Ch 1 instead of 3/4. Best wishes!

      Yes, this recorder just puts the two inputs into a single wav file with one on the first channel, the other on the second. In post, you'll need to split that into two separate tracks because most video editing apps will just assume it is a stereo recording. So the details depend on which app you're using.
