  • San Juans Traverse - In this episode of my Continental Divide Trail Thru Hike Documentary, I hike from Pagosa Springs to Lake City. It's a 5.5 day, 125 mile hike through the San Juan mountains. The route passes through the Weminuche Wilderness, Colorado's largest. This section of trail averages over 12,000' in elevation, making it the highest on the entire CDT. This area boasts some of the longest continuous above treeline hiking in the US, and offers some of the best hiking along the CDT (my top 5). The forest fire smoke from the 416 fire in Durango obscured views in the late afternoon, but made up for it with some of the most consistently beautiful sunsets of my entire journey.

    Maybe at the end of this series you could do a video about what it took to pull off this hike, and make these videos (The best thing on TH-cam right now!). I would love to know what camera equipment you used, and how you kept batteries charged on these long sections. Also what gear you used for the different sections, and how it performed. Also, maybe some pointers about logistics for the trip. One more thing, I am hoping you will do the PCT this year so we can have that to look forward to next winter! Not asking much I know!

    • @SeekingLost
      @SeekingLost  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely, thanks for your suggestions! I have a growing list of videos along those lines to do after I finish up with this series, I've got you covered. A "How I Filmed It" video is definitely on the list. Camera wise, I used a GoPro hero4 with an Evo SS gimbal, mounted on a mini tripod/grip(link to the tripod/grip in the video description). I used an Anker powercore 20000 mAh portable charger to charge my phone (every 2-3 days depending how much music I listen to), gopro batteries (one battery per day usually), gimbal batteries (every 2 days), and batteries for my still camera, a Sony Nex-7. The only time I came close to running out of juice for all my electronics was in the Wind River Range. It was a 10 day section and I was using the cameras a LOT.
      Ah man I wish I had some long trail plans for this year! Sorry to disappoint. However, I am working on a big (3000+ miles) loop out west, through Utah, Idaho, eastern Oregon, Nevada and a little of Arizona (Grand Canyon). Very preliminary plans, but this is my next big idea for a long route. I'm plotting as many interesting things as I can on a map and will string together a route that hits as many of them as possible. I love the route planning aspect of these hikes. This one will be a ton of off-trail hiking with little beta, but lots of adventure!

    Another great video... You must have walked a ton of extra miles setting the tripod shots... worth it! Who has the combo to the yurt lol?
    Was that a trail angle house at the end?
    Good job again 👍

    • @SeekingLost
      @SeekingLost  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I definitely put in some extra walking with all the tripod shots! It's funny, a friend of mine just started watching the first few episodes, and said "I bet you don't keep up with all those tripod shots by the end of the hike". But I did... commitment the whole way!
      The lock on the yurt wasn't a key or combo lock, but instead one of the kind where you twist the shaft to open and close it. It's more for keeping it secure from animals and the elements than keeping people out. But that's a good question! And the house at the end was the Raven's Rest hostel. It was a really cool place to stay and a great town stop. The owner had done a lot of long distance hiking himself, I think he hiked the AT, PCT and part of the CDT. Super relaxed environment and pretty much all the CDT hikers stay at the Raven's Rest when passing through lake City, so it had a great social vibe.
      Thank you and I'm glad you're enjoying the series!

    I've been enjoying your videos of your CDT hike though it's been making it harder to think how I won't be hiking it this year and have to wait a little longer. I think this is the first video footage I've seen of the San Juans section that wasn't buried in snow in the first half of June or they didn't hike an alternative route around it. The trail looks absolutely gorgeous.
    Just remember, the trail is all downhill from here. At least that was what I kept telling myself on Mt. Whitney when I hiked the PCT. It didn't seem any easier afterwards though. ;-)

    • @SeekingLost
      @SeekingLost  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Sean. It might suck to not be able to hike it this year, but if there's any consolation, waiting longer builds anticipation and makes you appreciate it that much more when you do finally make it out there. At least that's how I felt. And I was pretty deadset on hiking the San Juans regardless of how much snow there was, so I definitely lucked out with the low snow year.
      I kept telling myself that too every section... don't worry, the next one will be easier... and it NEVER got easier! haha

      Hey Sean are you going in 2020? Im planning on hitting the trail then so I can have more time to prepare, save, and get the gear I still need.

    • @seannordeen5019
      @seannordeen5019 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Emery, every winter I always make sure I have the gear I need for a thru-hike because you never know. I do enough backpacking every year so it always gets used. I also have a rough CDT plan already done as the weather has been wet lately and I've been feeling a bit antsy. But next year does look more likely as I'll have almost paid off my car loan and have a larger savings. Not only do you need the money to pay for a hike, but also have plenty left over to live on afterwards until you go back to work, which may take awhile.

    • @SeekingLost
      @SeekingLost  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@seannordeen5019 Ditto on savings for after the hike. I wouldn't want to have to go back to work immediately after a thru hike!

      June 9th-14th. This was an unusually low snow year though, I don't think the trail would be this clear of snow for another couple of weeks in a normal year. September would be a great time though!

I was several weeks too early for flowers here, but by Wyoming, wow!!

  • @roachnole

    I see that you hiked this section in early June. There appears to be minimal snow. Did you have any snow issues that required spikes? I know that the amount of snow during a particular month is dependent upon the amount of winter snowfall, and then the subsequent weather that either results in an early snow melt or a longer snow pack. That being said, do you have an opinion of what the snow would have been like if you had begun this section at the beginning of May? Again, I know this subjective. Just kind of wondering what you think.

    • @SeekingLost
      @SeekingLost  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There were no parts of this section that I felt like I needed spikes for. However, 2018 was a really low snow year and my videos are a poor example of what to expect at that time of year normally. The snow in the beginning of May in 2018 was probably similar to what June is like in a normal year. So basically, I hiked it in early June and probably had conditions similar to early July most years. In a normal year, early May would have a LOT of snow. You would definitely need spikes and ice ax. You would be on snow all day long. River crossings could be an issue. It can certainly be done, but I think it takes a certain kind of person to push through at that time of year. If that's you, go for it!

    • @roachnole

      @@SeekingLost Thanks for you response. I' can handle some snow, but not when it dominates the trail. I'm looking at the Hugh Uintas no later than mid-August 2021 for a week or so backcountry. Neither snow nor high water should be an issue then. Once done, I'm heading up to the Winds for a couple of weeks. Thanks again, keep up the good work. It is appreciated.
