Shut Down by the San Juans AGAIN | Hiking the CDT in Colorado

  • This was my warm-up hike for the Super Sierra High Route. I met up with Mudslide in Denver and we drove down to Wolf Creek Pass to hike the CDT through the Weminuche Wilderness up to San Luis Pass. On our 2019 CDT thru-hike, both of us had to detour around this section due to extreme snow levels. Turns out hiking in the San Juans is hard in any season, especially if you didn't train enough!

    Great job capturing this area! It was fun seeing it through your lens! Thank you for sharing your trekking experience through the San Juans, as well. Excited to be a new subscriber to see more of your adventures! 👍

    Love all of your videos! You have a great sense of humor and are willing to admit when you are defeated. I am a 73 year old female who still does nine-day solo backpacking trips, often on the Sierra High Route. Broke my hip last May (stupid kitchen accident), but was out in July doing another long solo trip. I’m proud that I may fall into the category of “grandmas who are crushing it!”

      Who knew the kitchen could be more dangerous than the SHR! That's amazing you were able to get back out there so soon. Definitely crushing it :)

    Nice video, Dan! BTW that a6600 looks awesome, even with the kit lens. Are you happy with it? And is there a huge difference to a fixed lens you used other time? Thanks, keep it up.

      Thanks! I’m mostly happy with it. In 4k it can be rather shaky, so you need to be super steady handheld and are somewhat limited in what shots you can get. With a prime lens you get a wider aperture which is nice, and the image quality is a little better. But after the winds trip I decided I still prefer the versatility of a zoom.

    Dude I'm so sorry for your loss,!,,,,,, it's one of my all time favorites ❤ and bummer bout the knee !!! My knee is permanently like yours.
    Military shortened my knee life.. but I can still get out I'm just the " grandma " u spoke of... lol. No more 25_30 mile cruising !!!
    It's all work but the playoffs are really worth while !!!!!!!
    The San Juan area is a huge fave of mine. Sadly it's quite a bit of up n down.
    But that may contribute to less use by ungrateful, careless users !!
    Hopefully we'll get to see you there in the near future !!! :)

    When were you in the San Juans? I finished the CT on July 28, 2020, going SOBO, the San Juans were definitely the highlight of the trip! The section where the CDT / CT diverges just above the Elk Creek drainage to Spring Creek Pass was probably the highlight of the trip too, was walking in thunderstorms for week tho! I also feel you on injuries, I rolled my ankle while doing a section hike on the AT this past fall and also had a nagging hamstring problem, but luckily nothing in the San Juans!

    • @DanStenziano
      @DanStenziano  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was early August, think we started on the 5th or so. We got really lucky and somehow had no storms! But I know how bad they can be in Colorado 😬 And yeah, it's pretty easy to get injuries like that on the AT with all those rocks!

      Yeah I've thought about it, the season is just a little awkward for me. If anything I would be most interested in the South Island.

    Another beautiful, chill vid! What did you do to rehab your knee before starting the Super Sierra High Route?

    • @DanStenziano
      @DanStenziano  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! We only had a few days, but whenever we'd stop on our drive to the Sierra I'd stretch my legs and hip flexors really well and I also tried to keep my legs straighter in the van. I think a lot of my pain came from worsened mobility due to sitting. Honestly I'm kind of surprised my knee stopped hurting on the high route. It was bugging me for the first day or two but I just stretched on every break and eventually it got better as I loosened up.

    • @conniechao3550
      @conniechao3550 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DanStenziano It's so crazy that I've been hearing so much about hip flexors nowadays. Maybe I am just surrounded by people who get injured frequently from backpacking or climbing lol. Glad the knee healed up so quickly or else we wouldn't have that great video to watch ;)

    • @DanStenziano
      @DanStenziano  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol hip flexors are a big deal! So important for mobility, especially for climbing and running. Hopefully you're blessed with flexible flexors, but mine get really tight when I'm less active 😩

    did you adjust your training after this and before the Sierras?

    • @DanStenziano
      @DanStenziano  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Didn't have time to train between unfortunately. After this we started our drive to the Sierra and a few days later were starting the high route. I think my problem this time around was not enough distance in my training. I focused on doing a lot of hills and elevation gain, which was good, but my body just wasn't prepared for longer distances.
