      @@mateussphilippi5029 Rousseau isn't either? And I'd say Traum is on par with some concert pianists. The pieces he plays, how quickly he learns them with some even having goofy twists to them. I'd say he's even better than some concert pianists. Also his identity has never been confirmed by Traum himself so he could be a concert pianist for all we know. The only thing that I feel is certain is that he's most likely Korean

    These super-virtuosic Liszt pieces are fun to listen to and they're of course impressive as heck. If you want another side of the master, try pieces like : Au lac de Wallenstadt, Ave Maria 'Die Glocken von Rom' or Consolation no. 3, they will give you a complete other side of Liszt. Very calm and beautiful.

  • @GreatCelestialTeapot
    @GreatCelestialTeapot ปีที่แล้ว +28

    Ways to tell how virtuosic a piece is, watch Gidi's eyes trying to track everything. Your eyes were twitching all over the place trying to take all that in. An absolutely amazing piece, as you say it's incredibly fast and virtuosic but has the musicality to match and make it more than just about hitting the keys as fast as possible.

    Oh, wow, Gidi...this is one of my favorite Liszt pieces and it was so well done. Even the top pros tend to speed through it, forgetting that it's a waltz and that it has a melody and mood that needs to be savored. This guy played it great! Next time you listen to it, keep in mind that Mephisto is "The Devil" and the spirit of the piece is "demonic"! I really enjoyed that! Thanks so much! And thanks to the Traum pianist!

    I‘d say this one is an actually difficult piece by Liszt and definitely harder than for example anything from the Annees de Pelerinage (yes, including the Dante Sonata and Valle d‘Obermann). The other Mephisto Waltzes (No.2-4) are also significantly less difficult (I prefer them tbh). All that being said, there are looots of Liszt pieces that are even more difficult, though I‘d say this one and Totentanz scratch the surface of what is about to come in terms of required technique (which would be the Transcendentals or the harder Rhapsodies). The opera fantasies (Reminiscenes de don juan for example) are at least 10x more difficult than this. I‘d also say that the B Minor Sonata is not as difficult. Even though the Mephisto Waltz 1 is a well known piece, it actually earns its reputation in terms of difficulty (unlike La Campanella). Lots of concert performers fail to play this piece without major mistakes in a live performance.
    A tier list of liszt difficulty could look somewhat like this:
    S: Reminiscences, symphony transcriptions of other composers
    A: Piano Concertos, Transcendental Etudes
    B: Paganini Etudes, Totentanz, Mephisto 1, pretty much all of his pre-1840 works, at least a good third of the rhapsodies
    C: Dante, Obermann, Benediction, all other rhapsodies, Bach variations, Ballades, Sonata
    D: Funerailles, Les Jeux, Odes Funebres, Fantasy and Fugue on BACH, Valses Oubliees, Legends
    E: Consolations, most of the Harmonies Poetiques, most of his later works
    F: Weihnachtsbaum
    Mind you that I consider everything from S to E pretty difficult on varying degrees. The great thing with Liszt is that Everything becomes easier the more you play him and get familiar with his writing :)

    • @SanAleksiusII
      @SanAleksiusII ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have you actually played even a single one of these pieces. There is no way Transcendental Etudes are more difficult than paganini etudes or totentanz or mephisto 1 or dante quasi sonata(you should mention its a quasi sonata which means its not really a sonata). Maybe you meant the grande etudes which are the first version of Transcendental Etudes that i wouldnt even dare to try and play. And not all symphony transcriptions and Reminiscences fall into your 's' category. His sonata(sonata in b minor) is also a lot harder and on par with difficulty ,both musicaly and technicaly, of symphony transcriptions and Reminiscences. There are many more difficult liszt pieces that befit the highest difficulty tier like La clochette and galop in a minor and many more.

    • @user-fu7zf4ck9z
      @user-fu7zf4ck9z ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@SanAleksiusII Of course I‘ve played a decent amount of Liszt myself. The Transcendentals are ridiculously hard. of course, not all of them, but pieces like Feux Follets or Mazeppa are insane. Only like 10 bars of the Dante are actually crazy difficult to play (The D Major presto right before the finale). The sonata is far from being easy but also nothing someone with a lot of liszt experience won‘t be able to accomplish. Of course the Grand Galopp or the Contrabandista could be mentioned as well, I also recognize that the Boccanegra fantasy is fairly average in difficulty compared to the rest. Totentanz might actually be Liszt‘s least difficult piano concerto in all honesty. I think a lot of people also underestimate how high up some of the rhapsodies have to be. HR12, 1, 9 are soo demanding, it’s unfathomable to imagine unless you tried to tackle them as well.

      @@SanAleksiusII Mazeppa and Feux Follets are harder than all of the Paganini etudes. I’ve only played harmonies du soir but still. Obviously if you consider the original versions of both sets it may be different

      vallee d'obermann definitely cannot be in the same rank as sonata + dante sonata
      im learning vallee d'obermann rn and yes it has moments that ur unlikely to play perfectly in concert (octave arpeggios at very high tempo) but that doesnt put it anywhere near liszt sonata or even dante sonata (even when taking interpretational stuff into account)

    • @user-fu7zf4ck9z
      @user-fu7zf4ck9z ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nandovancreij Fair enough, but it should be noted how untypically awkward some passages are to play. There are also some unusually big chords that you will not find anywhere in the Dante or the B Minor; the big chords in those pieces are more fair, thanks to their brilliantly pianist writing

    Franz Liszt fue un auténtico mago, un revolucionario de la técnica, un hombre desgarrado entre sus impulsos más sensuales y frívolos y el llamado de lo trascendental. Un conocedor del cielo y del infierno...
    Ojalá puedas escuchar y comentar la versión orquestal de este vals (Mefisto número 1). Recomiendo una que considero extraordinaria: la del director (conductor) Rene Leibowitz y la Filarmónica de Londres (London Philharmonic Orchestra). Está en TH-cam.
