    7:00: I'm glad the random guy chimed in to talk about Moe Norman. I was a starry-eyed kid who took two days off school to caddie for some guy from the U.S. who was trying to qualify for the Canadian pro tour at a course not far from where I lived. One day I was walking past the range when I noticed a group of people watching some guy hit balls. It was Moe Norman. Moe Norman was an eccentric character who rubbed some people the wrong way. But to this day I still remember a kooky guy hit one ball after another using different irons in the same place. I am not exaggerating when saying you could cover every ball he hit with a blanket. It was astounding. The guy would hit a ball and chat to whomever was listening and then hit another ball in the same place. One after another. Moe Norman was a golf genius.

The pro at a club I was a member of about 40 years ago would brag that he could identify every member from a distance from their swing.....and he was right. Writer of the best golf book ever. "GOLF'S GOLDEN GRIND" is a must-read for anyone who loves the greatest game ever invented. Barkow may be the greatest golf writer ever. My favorite line in that great book was about Hogan. "The man had his own exclusive channel in the sky," he penned. UNREAL. About the players' tempers, he wrote of them spilling out, "The bile of the Furies." Few, if any writers had his command of a phrase. Al Barkow was one of a kind.

    Ky Laffoon!!! I thought I was the only one who knew of him. My dream group to play with would have been Laffoon, Lefty Stackhouse, and Tommy Bolt.

    • @utubefan991
      @utubefan991 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      So I have a little connection to this. I remember a million years ago reading about Ky Laffon in Golf Digest?, seem to remember just an out of control but talented golfer. One story was that he opened his car door while driving to drag his wedge on the road to sharpen the bottom of it. And also a million years ago, I was playing at Fairfield Bay Arkansas, and Tommy Bolt was holding court at a table in the clubhouse. There was not an open spot on the table, covered with empties.

    • @Mycroftsbrother
      @Mycroftsbrother ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@utubefan991 I would just love to play with that group to see the flying clubs, hear the cursing, and see the self-mutilation they would go through. I love the story of Stackhouse hitting a terribly hooked tee shot. He went over to a nearby thornbush and started raking his hand back and forth through the briers saying, "Roll over again on me, damn you!!!" That hand bloodied, he then looked at his other hand and did the same saying, "Don't think you're getting away with it either!!" I don't remember if it was Lefty or Ky, but one of them missed a short putt and then ran off of the green and started banging his head against a tree.
      Bolt was famous for throwing clubs and cursing. There's a story about Tommy's caddy giving him a certain club, and Tommy didn't want to hit it. After arguing with his caddy, Bolt finally snapped the club across his knee so that he COULDN'T hit it. The caddy, who was full up of Tommy by this time, took the club that Tommy wanted to hit and snapped it over his knee. I think the story had them almost breaking, in turn, all of the clubs in Tommy's bag.

The lesser players were very good but the strong horses should did shine. Ripping drives off the Tee Box shot making. One that I remember was a guy named Neal Lancaster he was hitting them further than John Daly in the Stats at the time. Hogan tour had some great players. A new Sub.. We talked a bit about golf and he scoffed at all the technique advice nowadays and said main thing is to keep your head still. Thinking about that, i agree. All else will follow if you can do that - spine angle, etc. Kind of like a great dancer, sharpshooter, pool player or swimmer. Keep head still and let everything rotate around it. Makes sense.

    17:30 ... yes, because the golf swing is all about inertia and acceleration. Trevino swung with an opposite loop, a front to back loop, but he kept the inertia of the club up ... he never lets the club head stop. if the club head stops anywhere during its motion the swing is dead because the inertia is dead. Isaac Newton's first law of motion is the key. and you must go down and get the ball and swing out to the right ... even to hit a fade you have to swing out to the right but on the inner quadrant of the ball. if a player doesn't understand inertia they will never be able to consistently strike the ball well with control.

      Weight training wasn't popular until the past 20-25 years. I remember when it was basically VJ and Tiger really training hard. From the 80s back, basically only Gary Player.

    • @nicholasschroeder3678
      @nicholasschroeder3678 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jimlongino8420 It's not necessary the best thing either. Tiger ruined his body with overtraining. Nicklaus, Snead, and Watson played well into their 50s and could hit it a mile still without weights. Golf is more about hand/eye and flexibility than brute strength. Staying in good shape is important, but golfers don't need to press 300 or squat 500. A lot of it is counterproductive. Things like swimming, yoga--core exercises that relief back strain--are probably the best for golf.

    What he didn’t tell you was that balls weren’t even provided for players. The pro had to bring his own practice balls and that’s why the caddie had to shag them. As a caddie in those days what really pissed you off was when your player would stop hitting balls and stand around bullshitting with other players. They were very long days for very small amounts of money.

      Yes, that didn't go unnoticed by me. The two players named as being hated or "cheating" were both South Africans. Gary Player is one of the all-time greats and should never be disrespected in that way, and to push Bobby Locke off the tour is just petty.
      Did they only want US players on the tour? That can backfire as it makes the victories less valuable if all the players come from one country lol.
      Imagine how many PGA titles Locke would have won if they didn't kick him out (he won 10 in the space of 24 months, 15 in total)? I expect he'd have won some or all of the other majors to add to his four Open victories.

    You can hit balls for hours on a range and accomplish nothing, you have to go out and play and play and play shoot good scores scramble and grind all the things that happen on a golf course can't be duplicated on the range. I used to play myself into shape, not hit tons of balls just a handful.

    As a guy who went to a lot of golf tournaments when I was younger, here was my observations. Bruce Crampton and Billy Casper were real jerks at times. They may verbally blame the fans for their own poor shot. Trevino can be a jerk at times too but in a different way. He thinks it is funny to belittle certain fans in the crowd as being "not cool" when he mimics them back. I have even seen him booed over that by the rest of the crowd. And I have seen him use very foul language to the point it is reported to the tour. There is just no sense to that behavior.
