I'm glad I can play decent without effort. My grandfather taught me. I'll never shoot like him but enjoy shooting mid to low eighties. I have no slice, no hook, and no DISTANCE. But I'm really good inside 50 yards and expect to two putt most holes. Watching scratch golfers is another level. My grandfather shot 69 at 73 yrs, 77 at 77 yrs, and 82 at 82. Hard to believe an 82 yr old with emphysema could shoot 82. But he did.
Great interview...I can appreciate what he said about distance, a 3 iron of yesteryear being an 8 iron today, etc. Now, with the advances in technology, etc - I'm APPROACHING those distances of yesteryear; it really is a different game at the elite level.
As someone who has fitted and sold clubs for years I can add that lofts are different ( set lower ) today. The old standard lofts are basically no more . Todays irons have less loft than in years past. Example: Todays 5 iron has the loft of a 4 iron ( sometimes even less loft than that ). Same for hybrids. Manufactures do this to sell their clubs, making people think they hit their clubs farther. Of course the ball goes further too.
Yes,lofts are a lot stronger today sometimes two clubs stronger so hitting a seven the distance they do today, 172. Tour avg not more impressive than yesteryear.@@paulblaesing4615
In those days you bought golf shirts at the pro shop, only place that sold them. I remember as a kid the great satisfaction of playing 9 holes and not cutting a golf ball.
Al Barkow gave the best monologues iin the 1980s and 1990s on the show "Inside the PGA Tour". He had one or two minutes at the end of each episode like Andy Rooney. Some of his best I remember had to do with the change from Persimon drivers to steel and how good you could tell a player was by his shag bag. Those were the best.
That grip Sarazen used was one that the old time pro Alex Morrison taught, knew one of Alex Morrison’s students back in the early 1980’s, and he also taught that you should roll weight outside of right foot early on the backswing then roll back to the inside before you got to the top of the swing. Morrison also taught Jack Nicklaus swing instructor Jack Grout, Grout did teach Nicklaus to roll his ankles but not to put weight outside of right foot, but to roll his left ankle to the right in black swing and then roll your right ankle left for the downswing, and taught Nicklaus to keep both feet on the ground when practicing.
There is a story about hogan in a practice round i believe, on a par three his partner hit a hole in one and ben had a two. Without getting the story perfect walking off the green his partner was a little put out that ben didn't say anything so he says hen that was a fine two but didn't you notice i aced it ben said oh no i didn't. If true or not it really shows if hogan had a secret it was this incredible concentration. Also, im not absolutely not taking anything away from Hogans greatness , byron Nelson won over fifty tournaments and five majors but retired in early 1946, he won eighteen tournaments in 1945, snead played full year and nelson playing against hogan in eighteen tournaments eleven in a row and shot 68.33 average that season.he won the first six tournaments in 46 and writers wondered who could beat him, byro settled the question by retiring and buying a ranch. Byron was a great ball striker and retired at 34 there should be a what if not unlike bobby jones retirement at age of twenty eight with thirteen pre masters majors.
Didn't last very long at all. He could not compensate for his bad grip and swing plane. However, he was hot for a short time. Hopefully, his flawed technology won't be copied .

It’s all in the ball, my old VIP 5-iron will fly as far as my MB 5-iron.

They have got lower the lifts, it’s the was clubs are build and the modern ball, if they didn’t lower the lifts the ball would spin and up to high
