so being a Korean myself i've looked a bit more into the Happier Journey channel, and i can almost certainly confirm that this channel is owned by just some old korean dude who really like travelling, love letter fantasies, and Korean politics. the thing that originally freaked me out the most is the fact that those "love letters" are clearly translated. not a single person who speaks korean would write sentences like that. this somehow gave off very unnerving vibe and made me dig deeper, and originally it felt like someone was pretending to be a korean guy while using a translation tool for some unknown reason. but when i watched one of his videos where he recorded himself going on a comment section of a korean news channel, leaving comments about democrats and fighting "liberals" for TWO HOURS, the mystery was gone. He is just a guy with a bunch of time (and probably money) who's enjoying his life at canada, teaching himself how to edit videos, and scrapping some chat messages from a foreign website to make "episodes" of love letters. Also the song that plays in "new face" video is a famous folk song from 70s titled "Face", and its lyrics are about a woman missing her lover because she sees his face everywhere. i'm guessing that he just put those woman's pictures because he thinks of her just like in the song... which might be a bit creepy.
Maybe he’s translating the love letters via Google translate into multiple languages and then back into Korean? I can’t imagine any chat AI writing so poorly. Even the most basic AI knows how to write simple sentences (as in the grammatical term, simple and complex sentences) unless Korean is somehow a REALLY difficult language with a lot of context that no robot can get, but I doubt that. And also…the letters often are from the point of a woman. But some of them seem to be directed AT the poster instead or written BY the poster to someone else. Im confused.
I'm certain that the love letters are in mandarin because 520 in mandarin , rhymes with the words 我愛你 and it means I love you , in the 20 May 2020 letter , the love letter mentioned it and the letter mentioned something about if you wanna get a men's heart you gotta get his stomach first , that too is a common chinese idiom . So the old guy is possibly just having a long distance relationship with a chinese woman or he is just getting those messages off a chinese website
‘I can’t sleep’ is honestly one of my favorite little animation channels. Like, it doesn’t really feel like it has some overarching complex narrative or stupidly vague world building for some half-decent monster, like an ARG, it’s just kinda… freaky.
Freaky's an interesting descriptor in this context. I can see what you mean though, like it freaks you out kinda? Honestly I have to agree with it being an expression of trauma. It looks and feels like vent art that I did back in those days. (Only theirs is way better and animated lol)
@@sourgreendolly7685 i think I might be mixing it up with a wrong channel but didn't they say that they were gonna off themselves on their discord server?
ikr? i’ve been waiting for Goose to review it! it’s so cool and unsettling and the way it portrays trauma in the art style and sound effects it’s absolutely amazing :D
As a trafficking survivor, I Can’t Sleep’s videos really speak to me in a way I can’t explain despite it having nothing obvious to do with it. I hope that person doesn’t have the same expirience but even if they havent they definitely make me feel heard and understood
I'm a survivor of CSA, physical abuse, and emotional abuse, their videos also resonate with me. They're very... Trauma abstract, for lack of a better term. The way trauma presents is very odd and different for every individual, but we all experience that... Void. That "void" is accurately represented in these videos, I personally feel. Things are normal until something else triggers the character.
Mine isn't that "void" there is a sense of that as I'm quite lonely despite having good friends that often are around me I still feel isolated and to some degree it's related but it's rage and being unable to understand why to the things that happened I don't know about any of.that but the pain I do on some level understand that pain the character feels perhaps in different ways but something in me does understand maybe that's just me projecting and maybe we all know that pain deep down maybe it's some part of the human experience for better or worse or maybe it's just empathy idk but I do hope if they have suffered especially at the hands of someone they loved and trusted I hope they can recover or can at least live a happy life despite the pain and trama
@@TetsuRiken then I suppose like any art it's open to interpretation! Trauma presents in different ways, depending on what happened, and at what point in development. I feel anger towards my trauma too, but I get stuck in the feeling I felt then, hopeless, bleak, dead, etc which I think "I can't sleep" manifests perfectly
It'll turn out every cipher, without exception, will either translate out into the most epic sprawling narrative ever seen in online storytelling, or they all translate to "DRINK OVALTINE"
Wholesome theory: author of UnknownSunrise created the ARG to lure people in, they believe they have to read every book and tome mentioned in the titles, knowing they were never going to reveal or produce answers, but then all mystery solvin' visitors are duped into educating themselves with the required reading list 😊
The "I can't sleep" channel reminds me of those old Flipnote animation on the DS and the violent Flash animation from the 2000s. Not only that it's terrifying, but it also addresses the relatability to the audience or create some kind of deep meaning behind the horrors that the goth girl have went through.
I miss those so much. People did some seriously amazing art on Flipnote and on the WiiU pad as well. I'm not a very good sketcher / character designer / drawer of anything, but I was really impressed with what I could do on those gamepads. It's like you said, the less features and little space actually forced you to get more creative.
Between the old 2000's artstyle and flipnote-eseque presentation it reminds me of the atmosphere young artists from that era thought they were creating. Back then there was so much fascination with that edginess and "Dark" style, but often not really for any profound or meaningful purpose, just because of an adolescent fascination with darker themes. I Can't Sleep using that presentation as an actual expression of real pain is sobering. The imagery and aesthetic feels familiar, hearkening back to a time in many people's lives when discussing horrible things like that was used for fun and entertainment because we didn't really know how serious they were, and injecting that edgy, middle-school understanding of darkness with the real pain and fear that these themes are based on. Ultimately it really shows how sheltered and arrogant we were when we were young and fixated on edgy, dark art because we didn't really know what it felt like. By creating something which looks and feels like it was made in that era, but gives much more of a realistic portrayal of how miserable these themes are, it shows us just how little our young selves really wanted to do with those things.
homie flipnote isn't terrifying, and it didn't have stories with deep horrifying backstories because it was a ds app. also most flipnotes boiled down to "funny joke","character singing" and "epic stick figure fight"
@@my23bear youre lame and stupid. Language is fluid, meanings change. And some words have multiple meanings. My older sibling and I found Unknown Sunrise years ago and started up the subreddit! I’ve mostly stopped thinking about it, since it always seemed pretty impenetrable to me, but I kept the channel notifications on in hopes some new development would come up. Thanks so much for talking about it, I hope we can revive the search for answers!
So crazy to see someone finally covering Unknown Sunrise, we tried reaching out to a couple creators years ago but never got their attention. Thank you for bringing fresh eyes to the topic, I think a big part of the reason we stalled out is because we never had more than a handful of people working on it at a time, and this kind of thing isn't really my strong suit. There's already new people posting on the subreddit, so hopefully we can finally start making progress again. Also, so crazy to see my obsessive charts I made when I was 18 showing up on a youtube video with this many views. I could barely even get my friends to look at them. Almost makes me feel like I didn't blow a whole summer on this, lol
It’s cool u did it. There are numbers throughout a Kurt Vonnegut book, “Hocus Pocus” that readers could use to solve some riddle. I didn’t do it but always wish I found out what the answer was😄
Something I've noticed from I Can't Sleep's work is that they occasionally use sounds that are also used in Cry of Fear. Most notably, the scream used in their Smile Dog video is the same one made by the big screaming head at the beginning of the game.
@@MildlyMiffedMaxWhere they're walking through that black and white prison/hospital hallway with the eyes above it, I am pretty sure is literally just from AoM? It's either in AoM or the Sven COOP version with the level select, don't remember exactly but pretty sure it's referencing that which I always appreciated from the channel author
please do try to dive into the "i can't sleep" more! it's quite really interesting and chaotic...yet there might be a deeper meaning in it, trauma that has been, not in artist's mind, but in her character in those videos. i would love to see it one day! :D
if you think that work is by a mentally stable person putting their OC through trauma, and not that its someone expressing their trauma and venting using dramatized versions of what they went through. medical abuse being represented as alien probing sa being shown through monsters, hands grabbing, imprisonment, stalking, etc s/h and suicidal ideation being shown through the character willingly going through life ending or life endangering situations abandonment and hopelessness shown through isolation, shadows, empty rooms As someone familiar with this style of vent animation, as I used to be an animator who used the dsi's Flipnote Studio (which is basically like an early flipaclip, and many artists who used to use flipnote have now changed over to using flipaclip), so I have a pretty good grasp on ways artists, especially those trying to express their trauma in a way that helps them without the art being called "degenerate" or just creepy. Like many people that are furries make comfort NSFW furry pieces to deal with their CSA, and sometimes it ends up just looking perverted (i dont watch human nsfw so i dont have input about that) but generally I can see when someone is putting a character through something painful for character development, and when its literally vent art.
@yes homo I think to some degree it's either a fasnation with gore and expressing it in an artistic way (which I drought but I have seen that sort of art before) or it's some level of expressing their damage Either way they might be stable but we all have darker thoughts
i mean what else is there to talk about? it’s an artist expressing how they feel/felt via the medium of animation. it’s not that obscure or hard to understand imo
I discovered the “I can’t sleep” channel a while back, and I just, can’t get over how beautiful it feels to me. Just someone venting with their nostalgic art.
I Can’t Sleep uses a lot of imagery reminiscent of Silent Hill, and sfx from it. And we all know that story. I love I Can’t Sleep, it’s always vividly terrifying and unsettling. If the videos and art are based on the creator’s trauma, I think it’s beautiful and touching.
TH-cam actually recommended me I can't sleep and I went on a sort of deep dive into it. Reading theories on what it could be. Then it stopped being recommended to me and I forgot about it. This video made me look them up again because the last thing I remember was them reaching some sort of climax in their "story" and people assuming they were gonna stop the uploads. But they seem to be going strong. I grew up in the era that art style came from. (lenore, foamy the squrriel, contemplating reiko it was a little girlnwho was part of a demon family. I think the guy who was making the comic sold the site but you could never be to sure.) So I am 1 older fan in the sea of youngster lmao.
I think the Happier Journey one is either about - someone trying to get over the loss of their online (?) girlfriend (probably a catfish?) maybe the fake virus story was them trying to stop talking to him? (like they got the money and ran) but he's still grieving over her - someone grieving over their loved one and their final wishes "i want to travel the world with you" and I think the random woman appearing could mean something? they appear either in his head, near his heart, in the sky or in the background kind of "watching over him" ??? maybe the lake is either where he scattered the ashes or where they planned to visit or where they did visit and he goes there or wants to there for memories?? I also think the fake stories that sound like a someone advertising themselves is either him making up/copying an advert or him making up someone to get over the loss?
I have a theory about the love letters. What if the videos are being made by an AI that takes a bunch of poems, actual love letters, etc. and vomits them out into a video, which explains the very fast uploads, text-a-speech, jarring tone shifts and apparent formula? Doesnt explain the photos and videos but maybe that aspect was initially done manually?
I don't think they're AI. The misspellings and censored words feel human, and like a person with a poor grasp of the language. AIs (at least those prominent and available publicly) generally make relatively syntactically good writing but that is incoherent. This is semi-incoherent but maintains threads and distinct ideas, and is syntactically and grammatically very poor. The references to current events and violent ones especially make me think that this is mostly hand written by one or multiple people (perhaps it is his messages with people on dating platforms, etc, and particularly swers and scammers). Some of the messages seem to also conform to his own political views (conspiracy, etc). I think these are at least mostly human written.
With the video 988, I asked a native person. They said the korean TTS doesnt have any clear subject. There are somewhat sensible parts like "im a happy person and i want you to be happy too" but it just gets repeated. They're even scared listening to this and after watching a few more.
I was not expecting Happier Journey to be packed full of footage of my home town and province. Lake Louise, The Calgary Stampede and other places here in Alberta all came as a surprise to me
@@alimica Me too. When I saw those mountains and forest. They seem oddly familiar to me... Which only heightend the creepy aspect for a while before Goose revealed it be Canada.
Ahhh it was lake Louise, I used to work in glacier national park on the border and was thinking the lakes looked like some of the lakes from there but it couldn’t be because he said it was in Canada And then I remembered from your comment that I definitely saw lake Louise when I went to banff lol
RARELY comment on anything, but I actually got up out of my seat and went "Damn!" Whenever you brought up I can't sleep. Besides the sick aesthetics that I cannot get enough of i've been searching for anything about this channel for ages on just about every platform i can to only find nothing. I've almost been going crazy because there was nothing about it I could find! Tyvm for bringing light to it.
@@sexygirlmax2019 Vent art is still art. It's a bit dismissive to disregard it as just someone's angst when so much effort has been put into it IMO. Considering it has a patreon and it has been posted publicly its not like its supposed to be some secret vent art no one knows about! It's very interesting as a guttural, stylish project about turmoil and trauma.
If you like it you should check out all of Jhonen Vasquez's comics, I Can't Sleep is a direct fan homage to Vasquez and, imo, very likely just someone's Johnny the Homicidal Maniac-universe OC. which is not to say the work isnt very good, it is good, it's just also very clearly fan art. Like @yes homo says it is vent art, it's just very advanced vent art.
imo, "i cant sleep" isnt really an arg or anything, its just a channel with animations made by someone trying to deal with their problems and traumas. Nevertheless, the short stories they tell can sometimes be horrifying
the I Can't Sleep one might be one of the scariest things i've seen tbh. The jerky movements, scribbly art, scary scenes, horrible sounds, themes, literally everything is terrifying. I think the artist did an insanely good job making these and showing their emotions (if that's what they intended). I personally have no idea how make vent stuff, so it's really cool and scary to me.
The sad thing about the first channel is that the bad ARG possibility is the most likely. The thing to remember about puzzles/cyphers is that they are very easy to make difficult, even impossible. It's hardly like the original culture using the Vinča symbols wanted their writing to be undecipherable. The skill in ARG design, or any game design really lies in getting the difficulty just right for the audience you want.
What makes the last channel even weirder is that if you look at all the titles and go to the playlists he created, there are over 300 videos with the title "big love letter" and most of them seem to have huge letters in their descriptions, i thought "Sego" was the woman supposedly writting the letters, howerver there seem to be multiple woman's names and diferent stories with all the videos, for example, in the newest 1070 video we a woman named "lily", in "1061" we have an "Eloise" in "1053" we have "Pina" and in this particular one the translation i got made it seem like he was writting it in first person, but it could be a translation mistake, also at 10:11 and 19:46 that same vide i think there's a creepy black and white extremely small picture right of his face, but i really can't distinguish anything. I also ponder he is writing these himself, as in the about me section he mentions repairing computers and "love letter" whatever he means by it. Probably just someone who makes up these stories and edits them to video format, possibly having gone through something in the past and outleting it to youtube, however 2 videos per day is insanee
Also, he has a video in his channel titled ".... 살자!! 엄마야 누나야 [Big Happier]" where there's one of the only comments i could find in any of his videos, and he just drops links to white house documents from Trump pardoning inmates or some, also some of the links he provided are no longer availible, i believe he's just a bit unright and into conspiracy. The only other comment i could find was in one of his ufo videos from a ufo youtube video collector.
I think some others have come to similar conclusions, but i’m pretty sure the darker segments of happier’s love letters are chat logs from those websites where girls (or men catfishing) scam men for money with the promise of a relationship. They often use catastrophically bad things happening out of nowhere (hospitalization, the masked men, a robbery, etc.) as a way to extract money from the person they’re talking to. The more upbeat segments of the love letters are also likely to be either chat logs, or the profile bios of the women (and the images of them he includes in his videos probably come from there too). If he is a user of these sites, then he could be including the letters in his vlogs because he thinks they’re noteworthy enough parts of his day to report back to his audience. It explains a lot of the weirdness of the videos, i think.
@@glitch4010 I really want to find out more about this channel! There is 0 comments on all of his videos I swear! Ive looked to see if anyone has covered this guys channel but nope. I don't want to stop trying to figure this out, but it's getting kind of hopeless. I don't know if he's making these up or if he knows these people??? I just want to figure it out.
The really weird thing I personally noticed about Unknown Sunrise's Submissions have Closed video is that the "Hebrew" part is actually not Hebrew - it's Yiddish, as far as I'm concerned. Which is rather odd, as Yiddish is really close to being a dead language. Huh.
@@faithlessfate when something is called a dead language, it means that people don't really speak it as their native/first language anymore. it doesn't mean that it isn't learned or spoken at all. latin is a dead language, but a big chunk of roman catholic clergy speak it since their scripture is written in it.
Im aware of what it means. And hundreds of thousands of people speak it as their FIRST language. It was even in the running for the official languge of Israel but Hebrew won. Hebrew isnt even the most common Jewish tongue. Yiddish? Is.
I wonder if the Unknown Sunrise stuff is aimed at a different audience than present-day humans. Like, they thought they could talk to ancient aliens or time-travelers, that would explain using pictographs that are presently untranslatable
I get the feeling that Happy has a lot of female pen pals from dating sites and he includes some of the messages and pics he gets in his videos as an homage to them. I don't know if I would be particularly happy about that, if I was one of them, but maybe they're into it.
Was very pleasantly surprised to see I Cant Sleep on here! Ive been subbed to them for a long while now and also love how unique theyre animations are. Its good to see that people still appreciate whats now considered "edgy" culture and the different forms its taken since 2009! :3
"you guys are babies!" oh I was here when yt had public on-screen annotations and video responses, I'm ancient I didn't get to see the first upload, but I peeked at the channels myself in the meantime, so it's kinda nice to see this vid after getting a chance to preview the spooky stuff. and they gave me a chance to practice on my Korean again lol
The I Can't Sleep channel have been around for a while. Glad they are getting more coverage. Their art is amazingly creepy. The lack of any kind of sound 95% of the time just adds to it. And when sound is played, it's nightmare inducing. I love it.
About happy: I think the little images of himself that he uses might be like an yb avatar kind of thing, the differet photos representhing emotios or reactions etc
There is something to be said for those TH-cam channels you randomly stuble upon that have no real malicious or spooky intent, but end up oddly fascinating, especially when you're never REALLY sure if it is an arg or something. I still check up on this channel I found forever ago that always just felt off like eventually there is gonna be some big revelation or reveal, but nope just a weird vibe I guess lol
Really the first thing that could be done in solving Unknown Sunrise is to transcribe all of the videos into a computer and analyze the distribution of symbols. All words in natural language follow the same distribution. If it is a logographic cipher of English, which it most likely is, then computer analysis would crack it relatively quickly.
I just found I Can’t Sleep’s channel a few days ago. It’s cool to see you covering them even if I just found them myself. They’re a super talented animator, and I’m hoping their name gets spread around the gore community more
It's a mixture of ciphers. If you look, it has pigpen symbols which I couldn't find within any samples of proto-writing. The last video has Morse code. Several videos have variable indentation, which seems to be part of the solution. Perhaps it requires a way to identify which symbols are significant based on their arrangement. I'm curious as to how many cipher coding systems are used, based on the symbols. Would we see a pattern if we isolate each set? Would it reveal anything about the importance of arrangement or physical alignment on the page? If so, we are looking at hints of a grille cipher. Another possibility is a transposition cipher that requires identifying which cipher characters come from different cipher systems, and using that as a means to solve significant arrangements. I'll look into it more when I have an opportunity to sit down and really look at the ciphers. I don't think it's a coincidence that the symbols which are not present in proto-writing align with traditional pigpen symbols. Proto-writing Pigpen Morse Grille Transposition?
happier journey is so interesting,, i think it might be some kind of algorithm test for the most part. ive seen people do that thing where they add pictures of faces in the corner before, usually its been done to make the video seem like just another friendly vlog video or something. the love letters could be to see what youtube will allow someone to talk about and what theyll delete. they def seem stolen from dating site bios or texts, but the suggestive talk and dark themes make me think hes trying to see where youtube draws the line. super weird stuff though, i have no idea whats going on there :/
Gahhhhh I'm so happy someone is finally talking about I Can't Sleep! Is such an amazing animation channel to people to vent and enjoy the nostalgia the channel gives itself!
@@valentine.58 some other comments said that, the recording of someone’s performance of the song was copyrighted and others said the video didn’t have audio.
I love the look and aesthetics of I can't sleep but I cannot watch it. It's a bit too intense for me I think. I tried to watch the first video recommended to me and I couldn't handle the messages. Not sure why. Definitely not the first time I've watched or experienced those themes, but maybe it's the presentation, or maybe I was just extremely tired that day. All I know is it was awesome to see it being mentioned
I was thinking it's an ARG of some sort, and he's a serial killer. The pictures of the women are his victims that he found from escort ads. The love letters are the ads. I still think he's wrong and it's an arg
Has someone thought of asking him directly what's going on? Not sure if he still uploads but surely we can find him online and ask him, or at least find his facebook and find other people he's friends with and ask about him.
Super glad somebody’s covering I can’t sleep. I got the video “I woke up in a strange place” in my recommendations, and I was immediately invested. Needless to say, I didn’t sleep well that night
The Happier Journey honestly looks like an automated collage of stuff someone saved to their phone - text notes, photos saved (the women), photos made, music etc
I Can't Sleep was recommended to me a while ago, and I've been subscribed ever since. The art style is nostalgic and cute, I love it. As for the content of the videos, I can relate to them and I appreciate that I'm not the only one. It's almost comforting since I feel like I'm no longer afraid.
@@emmericon - Amazing. Reminds me of when I came across some other commenter (His name was “GuyFerriFan” or something) who had Deuce as his profile picture. You can see his picture in a comment section shown in the video.
I've recently become a huge fan of I Can't Sleep and I've always had an idea to make a video about the channel to get more people to find it, I think it's a very interesting art piece and the creator has a lot of talent. The videos are mature and do have some really dark themes, and I often wonder if these videos are meant to represent the artist themselves or if they are just creepy tales made by them. Either way, I hope that the creator is doing well and I think the mystery of the whole channel gives it a more enhanced experience.
"I Can't Sleep" was recommended to me as well, the one I got recommended with was the one called "Punishment" where it's clearly talking about rape in some way
The unusual thing is that they put 2 of the same message in japanese, one of them being in romaji, meaning it was written with letters instead of japanese characters.
Huh, i didn't realized but the line in Spanish is worded kinda odd, "Submissions" gets translated to "Presentación"(presentation), where it's supposed to translate closer to "Entrega" (as in, i submit my work) but im pretty sure this is just Google translate shenanigans
I'm definitely going to go check out "I can't sleep." I've been using nostalgia to heal from my trauma lately (I'm a csa survivor), and I get SO nostalgic for flipnote hatena style stuff. Not only that, I just started rereading my copy of JTHM again. Your timing is legit incredible lol

Goose, are you aware of _Welcome Home?_ I’d assume so, considering it is building to much popularity, but it is a very good ARG in the beginning stages.
@@cottonfrost12It's en ARG based on a website themed after a children's puppet show, haven't dug deep in the story but has an absolutely beautiful artwork
"I can't sleep" is definitely a reference to Johnny The Homicidal Maniac and the whole "Z?" which is an insomnia based symbol. People have the right to express how they feel, that's what art is, it's supposed to make people feel a certain way. Trauma is not a pretty thing, a colorful and eye pleasing ideology. That's why I enjoy horror art, it expresses a feeling of nervousness, paranoia. If the person of "I can't sleep" did go through something, I hope everything is going well for them, I hope they're doing better and living life to it's fullest
Ultimately I think I can’t sleep is precisely what you said, it’s a dark twisted retelling of the pro gal animators experiences mixed with their favorite animation style and grotesque visuals.
1-I like stuff that manipulates old shit like I can't sleep can and they tend to do it really well and 2-I like anything that takes something old and makes it interesting out of its own originality
thank you so much for talking about I can't sleep, theyve been one of my favorite horror artists for a while and its hard to find videos about them in english.
I feel like i recognized some of the symbols from "Unknown Sunrise" as cuneiform and some type of pagan runes, any way they are probably all different types of glyphs from all different types of cultures and locations from all over the place... or not idk.
They're definitely a variety of runes & symbols from various cultures, religions, and whatnot. The way they're set out seems very intentionally though, so it's definitely not just random nonsense
@faithlessfate The issue is that even if we were to interept these in a specific way with this mindset, there's a large variety of interpretations that can be made from it, which is one of many reasons why it's still unsolved. There's so much room for error that it's truly a mystery on the internet that'll stay unsolved for probably years or even decades from now
i remember once looking up "i cant sleep" at some late hour in the night hoping to find something to help me sleep, nope i just stayed up watching that channel it was so creepy
I think this may sound a bit silly, but I'm glad you brought up "I can't sleep" in a respectful way. I can't think of any specific examples right now, but it isn't uncommon for some youtubers to take an obvious vent art project and brand it as if it was something like "SCARY AND HAUNTED VIDEO DO NOT WATCH AT 3 AM!", and welp, it's nice to see someone who's better than that. As for the "Happier Journey" channel, I have a feeling the love letters may just be Happy making up his perfect woman (or women?), and the pictures floating around him may be stock photos he uses as "face claims" for her. Why does he put all of this over vacation footage, you may ask? Now that's something I don't understand. Perhaps it's something similar to how kids will sometimes just write random dialogues or straight up go wild in the comments of VGM uploads.
Happier Journey seems less like a "creepy disturbing channel" and more like a weird thing that clearly has SOME logical explanation behind it. my personal theory is that maybe this person is a nurse or works in a hospital, since there's a lot of mentions of hospitals and illnesses. maybe the first letter is from a patient and Happy is "archiving" them for some reason. that might be a stretch but that's all I could think. and sure, Happy is way weirder than this theory explains so I'm probably way off the mark lol
Really creepy that this Happy guy, who's a boomer, keeps posting photos of young women who are young enough to be his daughters. Gives me a real stalker vibe, ew.
With the korean video, I asked a native korean and they said that even though the profile pic is a guy, most of the videos seems to be coming from a woman. They tried 5 to 6 videos and they're all messed up (pertaining to the korean parts). With the 988, they said the korean part doesnt have a clear narrative or even sense. There're sentences like "I'm a happy person and I want you to be happy too..." but these just gets repeated in a non sensical way.
i just wanna say I hope love letter guy finds happiness and someone to share it with. he just seems like an old lonely guy with money traveling through Canada, probably got corona, got scared that he was gonna die from all the hype, then moved on with his life. that's... honestly one of my biggest fears in life. living out the last of your days just trying to enjoy them as they come, but also lonely and wishing that you had someone to share it with. kids, a wife, brothers, sisters, anything, anyone. from the bottom of my heart, I really hope he finds a friend at the very least in his journeys. everyone deserves that. also yeah, wtf are those ufo videos? please tell me there was a love letter included in those, that would make my day so much better lmao.
I want to point something out with I Cant Sleep. Random thought i had when you mentioned how they style is very similar to Jhonen vasquez style. Jhonen uses a symbol in hsi books sometimes thats a "Z?" Standing for "question sleep" or "do you have insomnia?" I wonder if that influenced the title of the channel.
The symbol is right on the cover of of Johnny the Homicidal maniac directors cut and is seen throught its story. And it can also be seen in an episode of Invader Zim.
When you scroll thru those symbols fast they remind me of puzzle pieces, I wonder if you printed them out cut around the symbols if you put them together I dunno
In retrospect, I have a personal "theory" that Happier Journey was possibly a very sad, lonely man, asking a random rudimentary chat bot to write him love letters, full of typographic and grammar errors, which as a non-native english speaker he didn't notice. I think this because of the "love letter" where it randomly starts talking about a home invasion, as from personal experience, old chatbots would usually ramble on about unrelated stuff on rare occassion. My theory on the hospital and virus-related letters probably come from the result of the old man deciding to tell the bot to make them somewhat related to "the virus" which then leads to all that weird thing.
This is weird but i think the first channel belongs to a old childhood friend of mine when we where very young we made a alphabet together that looked exactly like that I have the book somewhere at home maybe I'll be able to find it and translate it
Oh neat! I recognize that that gasping/moaning noise at 15:36. It's the same one used in Silent Hill 3's soundtrack, specifically in the track "The Nightmare To Come" starting at 1:49 into that song, though specifically it's able to be heard clearly without any of the background noise at 3:54 in the song. (for any interested, the sample itself is called "Nasal Voices" from a sample CD titled Zero-G - Ghost In The Machine)
I think Happy is writing some sort of fiction, maybe creating love stories by translating with Google things he wrote in Korean. The virus story in some way feels like a very stereotypical dramatic scene that could be found in a soap opera or something of the sort. Also the usage of sexual language here and there feels like he is writing it as it feels more like a masculine way of writing than anything. I think it is truly just a man writing stuff out as he feels, dumping anything in it from politics to personal opinions to religion. I think we can’t really understand the full thing without knowing what is going on in his life, and him being not very internet savvy because of his age makes it more complicated.
I've been subscribed to I can't sleep for a bit now and I think whoever makes the animations is extremely talented, they manage to capture the feel they're going for absolutely perfectly in my opinion, particularly the lack of sound for the most part. It makes sure you know that whatever is happening on screen is serious if a sound is used to enhance it.
I'm always hearing that dark souls music from majula in the background and i wanna cry but then im like 'oh thats soothing', dark souls is still emotional rollercoaster in my head. Great video though.

so being a Korean myself i've looked a bit more into the Happier Journey channel, and i can almost certainly confirm that this channel is owned by just some old korean dude who really like travelling, love letter fantasies, and Korean politics.
the thing that originally freaked me out the most is the fact that those "love letters" are clearly translated. not a single person who speaks korean would write sentences like that. this somehow gave off very unnerving vibe and made me dig deeper, and originally it felt like someone was pretending to be a korean guy while using a translation tool for some unknown reason. but when i watched one of his videos where he recorded himself going on a comment section of a korean news channel, leaving comments about democrats and fighting "liberals" for TWO HOURS, the mystery was gone.
:0 that's really interesting! thank you for your explanation/interpretation :D
Thank youu!!! I've been looking for an explanation.
So the old guy is possibly just having a long distance relationship with a chinese woman or he is just getting those messages off a chinese website
fights liberals and democrats so typical schizo republican
‘I can’t sleep’ is honestly one of my favorite little animation channels. Like, it doesn’t really feel like it has some overarching complex narrative or stupidly vague world building for some half-decent monster, like an ARG, it’s just kinda… freaky.

Freaky's an interesting descriptor in this context. I can see what you mean though, like it freaks you out kinda?

I'm a survivor of CSA, physical abuse, and emotional abuse, their videos also resonate with me. They're very... Trauma abstract, for lack of a better term. The way trauma presents is very odd and different for every individual, but we all experience that... Void. That "void" is accurately represented in these videos, I personally feel. Things are normal until something else triggers the character.
Mine isn't that "void" there is a sense of that as I'm quite lonely despite having good friends that often are around me I still feel isolated and to some degree it's related but it's rage and being unable to understand why to the things that happened
I don't know about any of.that but the pain I do on some level understand that pain the character feels perhaps in different ways but something in me does understand maybe that's just me projecting and maybe we all know that pain deep down maybe it's some part of the human experience for better or worse or maybe it's just empathy idk but I do hope if they have suffered especially at the hands of someone they loved and trusted I hope they can recover or can at least live a happy life despite the pain and trama

The "I can't sleep" channel reminds me of those old Flipnote animation on the DS and the violent Flash animation from the 2000s. Not only that it's terrifying, but it also addresses the relatability to the audience or create some kind of deep meaning behind the horrors that the goth girl have went through.
Ah, the true OG (original gang-banger) has arrived.
By creating something which looks and feels like it was made in that era, but gives much more of a realistic portrayal of how miserable these themes are, it shows us just how little our young selves really wanted to do with those things.
homie flipnote isn't terrifying, and it didn't have stories with deep horrifying backstories because it was a ds app. also most flipnotes boiled down to "funny joke","character singing" and "epic stick figure fight"

please do try to dive into the "i can't sleep" more! it's quite really interesting and chaotic...yet there might be a deeper meaning in it, trauma that has been, not in artist's mind, but in her character in those videos.
i would love to see it one day! :D
Have you not seen they're "sins of the flesh" animation?
if you think that work is by a mentally stable person putting their OC through trauma, and not that its someone expressing their trauma and venting using dramatized versions of what they went through.
medical abuse being represented as alien probing
sa being shown through monsters, hands grabbing, imprisonment, stalking, etc
s/h and suicidal ideation being shown through the character willingly going through life ending or life endangering situations
abandonment and hopelessness shown through isolation, shadows, empty rooms
As someone familiar with this style of vent animation, as I used to be an animator who used the dsi's Flipnote Studio (which is basically like an early flipaclip, and many artists who used to use flipnote have now changed over to using flipaclip), so I have a pretty good grasp on ways artists, especially those trying to express their trauma in a way that helps them without the art being called "degenerate" or just creepy. Like many people that are furries make comfort NSFW furry pieces to deal with their CSA, and sometimes it ends up just looking perverted (i dont watch human nsfw so i dont have input about that) but generally I can see when someone is putting a character through something painful for character development, and when its literally vent art.
@yes homo I think to some degree it's either a fasnation with gore and expressing it in an artistic way (which I drought but I have seen that sort of art before) or it's some level of expressing their damage
Either way they might be stable but we all have darker thoughts

I think the Happier Journey one is either about
- someone trying to get over the loss of their online (?) girlfriend (probably a catfish?) maybe the fake virus story was them trying to stop talking to him? (like they got the money and ran) but he's still grieving over her
- someone grieving over their loved one and their final wishes "i want to travel the world with you" and I think the random woman appearing could mean something? they appear either in his head, near his heart, in the sky or in the background kind of "watching over him" ??? maybe the lake is either where he scattered the ashes or where they planned to visit or where they did visit and he goes there or wants to there for memories??

I think these are at least mostly human written.
it's not AI happier journey edits their videos 40:52
With the video 988, I asked a native person. They said the korean TTS doesnt have any clear subject. There are somewhat sensible parts like "im a happy person and i want you to be happy too" but it just gets repeated. They're even scared listening to this and after watching a few more.

the I Can't Sleep one might be one of the scariest things i've seen tbh.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the symbols which are not present in proto-writing align with traditional pigpen symbols.

happier journey is so interesting,, i think it might be some kind of algorithm test for the most part. ive seen people do that thing where they add pictures of faces in the corner before, usually its been done to make the video seem like just another friendly vlog video or something. the love letters could be to see what youtube will allow someone to talk about and what theyll delete. they def seem stolen from dating site bios or texts, but the suggestive talk and dark themes make me think hes trying to see where youtube draws the line. super weird stuff though, i have no idea whats going on there :/
Gahhhhh I'm so happy someone is finally talking about I Can't Sleep! Is such an amazing animation channel to people to vent and enjoy the nostalgia the channel gives itself!
if i had nickel every time Goose Boose uploaded this video, i'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot, but its weird that it happened twice

I feel like the "Love Letters" are something from a mail order bride type of situation.
I was thinking it's an ARG of some sort, and he's a serial killer. The pictures of the women are his victims that he found from escort ads. The love letters are the ads. I still think he's wrong and it's an arg

Super glad somebody’s covering I can’t sleep. I got the video “I woke up in a strange place” in my recommendations, and I was immediately invested. Needless to say, I didn’t sleep well that night
Words cannot describe how happy it makes me, personally, that I can't sleep is in there.
I love these videos. Thank you goose - awesome as always.
The “happier journey” clip still catches me off guard because of the stupid music
Its so funny to me. It seems so out of place

A lot of these love letters remind me of romance scam emails, they just have that kind of energy about them.
"I Can't Sleep" was recommended to me as well, the one I got recommended with was the one called "Punishment" where it's clearly talking about rape in some way
4:00 holy shit, they even included the phrase in irish! nobody speaks that language anymore, i'm honestly kinda flattered they thought about it
They used Yeddish as well (Rather than modern Hebrew).
@@jonh3132 really? that's so weird, i wonder why they did that
The unusual thing is that they put 2 of the same message in japanese, one of them being in romaji, meaning it was written with letters instead of japanese characters.
@@Jixsurez oh yeah, i didn't notice that before. everything about that is so weird lmao

'I can't sleep' is beautiful and traumatic but also nostalgic I will most likely check it out
40:00 sounds like a boy scout training manual tbh.
I taught First Aid a couple times, and we covered this exact stuff in a similar order.
Ultimately I think I can’t sleep is precisely what you said, it’s a dark twisted retelling of the pro gal animators experiences mixed with their favorite animation style and grotesque visuals.
Them "Love Letters" is what gotten me creep out and invested in lol
1-I like stuff that manipulates old shit like I can't sleep can and they tend to do it really well and 2-I like anything that takes something old and makes it interesting out of its own originality
Unknown sunrise just seems like some edge lord trolling everyone. No way any of it means anything
why do you even ask
thank you so much for talking about I can't sleep, theyve been one of my favorite horror artists for a while and its hard to find videos about them in english.
Thats my thought. Like a movie serial killer cutting letters out of a magazine, its one letter from each culture
Angry aging vibe hits deep. I remember, Goose 😭
Do they allow un-vaxxed people to work in hospitals in Canada?
@@vinnyc365 No idea but there's plenty of people that lie about their status, etc, and there's also plenty of medics that refuse to
"Every emo person I've ever known has loved Invader Zim" He says while I wear a Gir tshirt, Gir hoodie, carrying my stuff around in a Gir backpack
insane to me how more people aren't talking about happier journey here WHAT is bro cooking
Had totally forgotten about geddan and decided to look for old videos; people are still making new ones!
My theory on the hospital and virus-related letters probably come from the result of the old man deciding to tell the bot to make them somewhat related to "the virus" which then leads to all that weird thing.
i feel like goose would freak out if he ever found out about thoth rhobot ghod

Happier Journey is really strange. I speak both English and Korean, and this person doesn't seem like a native speaker of EITHER language.
These mini mysteries videos are always so good
I've been subscribed to I can't sleep for a bit now and I think whoever makes the animations is extremely talented, they manage to capture the feel they're going for absolutely perfectly in my opinion, particularly the lack of sound for the most part. It makes sure you know that whatever is happening on screen is serious if a sound is used to enhance it.
personally i think the first one could be some kind of conlang! the symbols presented look like something akin to a logoraphy or smthn
