Wesley P what’s more harmful. Vapor pens that contain Nicotine that helps take the edge off of prison life which is very stressful or a bunch of inmates fresh off the streets where a lot of them smoked going through withdrawals and or being stressed out/angry thus causing more fights/violence? Morally I think it’s wrong to deny someone the freedom to choose something that helps them cope with incarceration.
Yes and then you have the fact that people get incredibly anxious and immensely irritable without tobacco which in turn causes catastrophic hostile results. Not only for the population of the prisons but also the officers within the prison. It's a no brainer. And there is no solid evidence that E cigarettes are harmful, tobacco on the other hand is a very different story. It's pretty obvious how helpful this is.

Just remember not all criminals are bad people. That's the important part. Plenty of them are, but definitely not all of them. Stupid decision, wrong place wrong time, perhaps you just wanted to get high could get you locked up here and there so.... yeah.
That's exactly what caught my attention! He's not doing this to get rich.. he could charge more than 2/3$ to the prisons if that were the case... he understands they're human beings and they're going thru a lot and to expect someone just to up and change many addictive behaviors/habits all at once is to expect them to be superhuman while subjecting them to living in inhumane conditions; as is the case in countless jails/prisons...with sub-par Healthcare... if any...etc...etc.... the list goes on. I have to say he sounds like such a very respectful man who really just cares about the temperament of his prisoners and how that affects them in their recovery and rehabilitation. The first thing they tell you when you go to rehab is to not quit smoking cigarettes at the same time because mentally and physically we have a lot of growing to do and it doesn't happen overnight. But when cigarettes are cut from us just like that, due to our own actions, we do get angry and we do act out subconsciously and that could lead to more charges. I understand the whole accountability is on the prisoner who acts out but I believe this man's heart was in the right place by doing what he did. We can find fault in almost anything and if that man becomes wealthy because he created something good for the men that he takes care of, then so be it.
yea he is making money from it but he is also putting the money back into the system... so more less the prisoners are paying for the upkeep and new hardware....
He isn’t putting the money back into the system. The jail/prison is the one making profit from the cigs so that money gets put back in. He’s still selling the cigs to that prison, albeit at cost.
He's making money by selling to the prison. The prison is making money by selling to the prisoners but puts it back into upkeep/upgrades. The guy found something and is making good money from it, I don't blame him for that. A lot of people would do the same if they had a chance. But to say it's morally right isn't correct either, it's more or less in the gray area.

this jailer is a good guy, actually giving the inmates a luxury while serving their sentence is very respectable they are overpriced though, $15 is kinda crazy
That's downright genius. Nicotine addiction is basically 2 weeks to 2 months of absolute insanity. Prison riots have happened over cigarettes being taken away. This helps keep the inmates in line, helps keep their addiction under control and makes it in general, safer for everyone as it's easier for the prisoners to be able to relax. And it funds programs to help in rehabilitation. That's all fantastic.

I feel like this is something a lot of people misunderstand about journalism. Asking very blunt, almost rude questions like this is a good way to really highlight the trustworthiness (or lack thereof) of the interviewee. The more the interviewee tries to talk around the question or sounds defensive, the less likely they are to be genuine and vice versa. It's not a matter of "treating him as the bad guy", it's asking important questions that anybody should be thinking about in a situation like this and giving the man a chance to directly defend himself...or hang himself with the rope you gave him. Either way you're a bit closer to the truth.
@@Rynjinivar true, but you're asking someone to tone down their biases before watching a piece of journalism in order to see that interesting dichotomy in the first place. very hard when people are preemptively expecting to need to defend their mental set, lol
The thing is would you buy cigs that are contraband and risk going to the hole and lose all your privileges in prison or buy a vape and not risk shit and still get that nicotine that keeps you going through the day. This is the problem with guys who never been to jail or prison. Nicotine is the saving grace when serving time and well many people kill for cigarettes in prison where you can't get any nicotine legaly. Cigarettes is the second most valueable thing after dried noodles. Drugs are the third. So yeah nothing gay about not wanting to get put in isolation or a penal cell when you already serving time. Isolation and penal cells are the literal embodiment of hell on hearth you get out max an hour sometimes guards cheat you of your rectime and you don't get to go out at all and you are stuck there alone in a grey fucking concrete box that only seems to get smaller with each hour it breaks even the hardest mother fuckers when put in the hole for a long time.

I think this is a pretty good solution for the inmates and guards who manage them. Dropping an addiction cold turkey is really difficult and can have a lot of unpleasant side effects, and the money mostly just goes back into making the jail a better place for all the inmates, whether they use the cigarettes or not. The jailer seems like he cares about them as people and isn’t just using them to make money
It's hard to doubt him when he says his passion is with his jailer career. He could have quit to concentrate solely on his e-cig business especially since it's making $3mil/year.
He wouldn't have a market outside of the jail. Lol. They are shitty little $3 ecigs he buys from another company and resells them over 500% to the prisoners. It's extortion. He should have to let other e-cigarette companies offer their products at the jail at least. Then you'd have people saying all jails should have ecigs. Then you'll have people saying why ecigs but you can't have a cigarette. Lmao butterfly effect. I think he had good intentions, but sees the money in it. Prisoners are already exploited out the fucking wazoo, let's not make this worse for them. Make them stop bad habits. Not enable people to make insane amounts of money off of them and their families.
And he still shows up to work after having a 3 million dollar year. To me that shows he's genuine. I'm still not sold on what he's doing but he seems like a decent man
think about it this way, there's a market for a prison vape, if he didn't create one to fill that market someone else undoubtedly would have. At the end of the day, the prisoners themselves would rather have them than illegally sneak cigs in or go without. If anything, he's doing great work for inmates, giving them a way to relax and feel somewhat at home in a place of constant stress, he just unfortunately has to market that product to other jailers.

Spot on. He could have left the jail and launched his company. The jail has to put the revenue back into its own budget so he basically doesn’t earn money from it. Although since they say he sells the e cigs 5x the price he buys them, he could have easily left and sold the product to other jail for a portion of that 80% margin and be rich as hell
@@nytim666 You are an idiot. He is not the one who is buying the ecigs, as you stated in your comment. He owns the company that manufactures them. Only the jail has to put its profits back into the system. It said nothing about the company putting its profits into the system. The video said that the ecigs are purchased from the company at 2-3 dollars and sold at 12-15 dollars to the inmates. All of those profits should go to funding inmate programs, but knowing the corruptness of the American "corrections" system, it's probable that it doesn't actually work that way. Regardless, that has nothing to do with what the company itself makes. They might manufacture these ecigs for 50 cents each and be making huge profits. Those profits are completely his. Therefore, he is earning money from it and you are completely wrong. By the way, even if the jail wasn't putting the profits it makes back into its own budget, it wouldn't be his money because the jail's profits aren't his (unless there is corruption). No, he wouldn't have been able to leave and sell the ecigs to other jails for higher prices if he had left. What makes you think that was an option? It seems that institutions have been extremely skeptical of his products since only 33 of them have opted in. Every jail and prison works by selling their commissary at extremely high markups. They sell individual ramen noodle packs for $1 or more. Do you really think the prisons are paying much more than what grocery stores pay for them? I have no problem with inmates having access to nicotine. I do have a problem with inmates being taken advantage of because they have no other options. I also have a problem with idiots like you acting like others are doing things out of the goodness of their hearts when they are actually most concerned with making a profit.

In my area, police will sell cigarettes to inmates at triple the price. While here they're making money while providing cheap alternative, that really is a win win.
As a person who was a correctional officer for three years at a Maximum Security Prison, I can tell you this say fucking fantastic idea. You don't know the stress a man goes through when he loses everything, and that little cigarette can feel like his only source of escape and Hope. Reporter is being pretty douchey. He clearly has no idea how difficult it is to be a drug addict and be forced to deal with WD and PAWS without nicotine, let a lone be in prison. Jailer or not, he did a great thing here. He took something that could have been contraband, and turned it into a way for inmates to relieve their stress, at least for a little while. He can be an entrepreneur or a capitalist all day, but it doesn't change the fact that without him doing this, inmates would still have to hustle cigarettes and nicotine gum, which leads to extended sentences, and is a huge burden on the inmates, the police that have to deal with it, and the taxpayers who pay for their stay. He is taking something many of you young folks see as "he's making money off prisoners" and turned it into giving prisoners what they want, at the cost of parts+labor and a small fee. $2 can be gained by many inmates doing a lot of things, from hustling ramen and ketchup packets, to writing for those who can't read. Know this. This is a good thing, for everybody. Not just one man. Don't believe me? Ask the prisoners how they would feel if they took away their ecigs that they just got because you think they're being exploited. Ask them. Go down and ask someone from GenPop what they think. Because I know what they would think.

Excellent point.
Maybe, but then he would have a guaranteed market that he runs.
If he quit he would lose the monopoly in the jail. He won't quit.

Some days are really hard. I catch myself feeling useless and think about what I could do to 'earn' a lifetime spent in solitary confinement without hurting anyone else to get there but just removing myself from a chance to be a waste of existence or resources. Spot on. He could have left the jail and launched his company. The jail has to put the revenue back into its own budget so he basically doesn’t earn money from it.
In my area, police will sell cigarettes to inmates at triple the price. While here they're making money while providing cheap alternative, that really is a win win.
I completely support what he is doing. It’s actually a very smart move all the way around!
“Lets kill the prisoners”
Smokers are some of chillest people out there. Its a great conversation starter with strangers. I rarely smoke nowadays though.
As a person who was a correctional officer for three years at a Maximum Security Prison, I can tell you this say fucking fantastic idea. You don't know the stress a man goes through when he loses everything, and that little cigarette can feel like his only source of escape and Hope. The thing is if they don't get those e-cigarettes or going to find tobacco in the prison. Pretty much everything that you find on the street you can find in the prison, just that extremely accelerated prices. I can't tell you how many people get extorted over tobacco prices and things of that nature because they owe money. This seems like a fantastic idea and I wish more facilities would listen to this
I Seriously think they should give prisoners Ecstasy once a week, optional of course. :) Before the regimine there are gang fights... after the block on E... half are singing, some are wandering like fairies even though they straight as an arrow... Races mixing to play Twister and Poker... Skin head and Muslim Emum playing Patti-cake Bakers Man... The Bully of the Block, the unreasonable BISON is sitting at a table knitting... Yeah... Pot would work too but they would all sleep ... that might be good too though, but they will get fat on munchies..

dude seemed pretty down to earth and chill... didn't detect ulterior motives or evil from the Mr Jailer at all. the inmates seem happy, the medical records were the first priority... looks like a lot of good is happening here
dude must’ve never had an addiction himself cause anybody who has and then been confined like jail fr will understand the level of assistance just a couple puffs will provide you. it’s not a crack head thing it just helps. it also creates a big social situation that hasn’t really happened in years, which is smoking in groups. it’s a community thing
as a former inmate myself and somebody who is a recovering addict i know all to well what it is like NOT having a smoke even more so if you are going through withdrawals not having a smoke during that nightmare process can make even the most gentle of souls snap .
Smart move. Been in jail. Mothafuckas will chill if they have a crutch.
Yeah cause we owe some piece of shit in jail "a free lifetime crutch." Meanwhile, out in the real world, you have to get a full time job just to support your own crutch and bills.

Right on point.
It's his job to investigate every possible angle of a story. The questions he asked were fair.

It's a vice reporter. What, you expected him to actually know something? ;)
he's doing his job as a reporter not to take either side imo. i thought it was a good interview. and i certainly don't begrudge the jailer making a profit just the same as any entrepreneur. his mark up does not seem outrageous. not when compared to something like big pharma
He’s doing a good thing. Leave him be.
My heart is with the jailer he doing great work for his coworkers and inmates.
Guy is really compassionate and humble he deserves it.
The majority of vice fans are completely ignorant, if you want a good example there in this comment section.
He's still making a profit, hell even a killing. It just ends up making more for the prison than the dude but he's still making millions.
I don’t think you understand, the Jailer owns the company, he sells his product to prisons and prisons raise the price and sell it to inmates and that money from the inmates is out back in the prison, not the money the jailer who owns the company gets

You know what? There might not be a tomorrow for them, they could get raped and stabbed, infected with diseases and killed. Their lifestyles before this probably included crippling and potentially fatal withdrawals and hangovers. Please think of how hard prison life really is, never being able to see your family or kids grow up. Etc. A 5watt or whatever vegtable glycerine vape is NOTHING to worry about.
@@Dirtxbc that's church bro. A lot of people commenting have no idea what it's like. I was in SCI- Smithfield (pa state prison) When they took Away tobacco in 2019. And they had already introduced us to e cigarettes it was the crossbar too. I tell you a lot of violence happened and if it wasn't for having vapes , I don't know how it would have went down. but it was devastating losing tobacco and watching the lifers have the deal with it. But hearing This warden talked about coming in withdrawing and needing a cigarette man he's not lying . He's gotta be a millionaire now.
Seems to me if he only cared about money he'd quit his job and only focus on selling the e cigs but he's not. And I guarantee the prisoners are fine with it.
I think it's a lot easier to sell them to other prisons if he is a warden himself. I don't really know just a thought
Yeah i agree. The only reason it was brought up is because vice likes painting law enforcement in a negative light
no, because then he'd have to deal witha fair market instead of the monopoly he already has.

I like that the interviewer asked the hardball questions but ultimately this is a net positive all around in my opinion.
Except for the people living in cages to enrich those with more wealth and power than anyone. Sorry about the outburst it's hard to see anything about prison in a vacuum without commenting on our modern day slavery.
i also like how the warden evaded answering those questions and "lets the viewers decide"
