I have had this lens for many years and used it on my crop body and it was my general walk around lens. It works great. I bought a 70-200 f4 IS to go along with it at the same time (I did not know much on what I needed but was just excited). This lens made my 70-200mm obsolete because the 105mm range covered all my needs. If I needes really far reach, 200mm was not enough anyway. If my main lens was a 18-55mm range, then that higher telephoto would be more needed. This is simply a do everything lens.
I thought about trading my 24-105mm f4 for a 24-70mm f2.8, because of a lot the reviews were not as favorable as compared to the 'scary-sharp' reviews the 24-70mm was getting. Some people even said the lens was not sharp and kind of slow. I really started thinking that it was more of a 'kit-lens' according to those reviews. My 24-105mm came with a Canon 6D FF camera vs 1. I paid $900 for both camera and lens in great condition ! After shooting a couple of weddings with this lens I soon came to love it. I can't say much for the focusing on the 6D, but when it focused the pictures were scary-sharp. I was really impressed with this lens and it stayed on my camera most of the time during a wedding unless I wanted to shoot really wide-angle with my 16-35mm f2.8 (which is another great lens). I was able to capture razor sharp images standing on a balcony about 150+ yards away with this lens in dim lighting conditions, no problem. This lens is not going anywhere, even if I do decide to get the 24-70mm f2.8, but right now that's not really a main priority.
I have one and it’s very much a jack of all trades, master of none. Yes, you can take it to the zoo and snap pictures of animals... but you’ll miss the extra range. You can take it to a portrait shoot... but you’ll wish you could come down to f/2.8. But anything in between and landscapes? You’ll probably be fine!
Thanks for this review, trying to made a decision between this lens and the Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8. I want something which is good for video and stills. Thank you.
@@kahzmedia Auto focus does not work, but I am usually behind the camera, so I do not need auto focus. If I need to be in front of the camera, the tilta nano does the job for me. I wouldn't upgrade unless you're usually at 70mm and cropping. I think most folks save for a 70-200mm go along with it. By the time you sell them one you've got and buy the replacement, you'd be a significant way down the road to having the money to buy the other lens.

Thankyou for this video tutorial I bought this lens due to it`s price at the time but have since discovered it is part of the bundle pack that Canon gave out with the 6D ( I purchased the lens and my 6D seorately) so not really knowing what this lens was for I have to say it was the BEST accidental purchase I`ve ever made and I have now found I grab this one over my 200mm Unless I am shooting a concert or something in low light .. I love this lens and I never leave home without it .. I have discovered as well the photos are brighter on my 1500D than the 6D but I still would not part with my 6D .. It`s extremely useful as it can be used on both my APSC camera which I use if I`m just out and about but when doing photography for Clients I grab my 6D so it`s nice to know that I can add this lens and my 35mm lens and I am set for the day .. my poor 200mm lens hasn`t seen the light of day since I bought this 2 years ago for $400 second hand
Can't argue about the versatility of this lens, but from the image quality standpoint, IMHO, this lens shouldn't be in L category. I have this lens, the chromatic aberration in this lens is high, and as you show it in your video, the IQ on the edge is really not good. I think, IMO, instead of buying this lens, I'd prefer to buy the Tamron 24-70 F2.8 G2 instead. Yes, you can't get the 104mm, but for most portrait photos the 70mm can handle it quite right. However, the RF 24-105mm F4 L, is a superb lens.
Thinking about this lens for static car stuff/walk about. I have 10-20mm sigma and a 18-50mm sigma f2.8 with a 70-200m canon L. Hoping 24mm is wide enough on a crop sensor
Beave not sure man, I also have a Crop, though I’m considering Full Frame. I feel like 24 might be a bit tight in some cases! But if you’re keeping the 10-20, then it could be very nice!
I just joined your subscription and really like your presentation. I own a Canon RP with a RF 24-105 mm F4 L IS USM and a Canon EF 50mm STM 1:18. Its funny. I’ve had this lens for 15 years. Came with the 5d mk II. It’s razor sharp and bores me. Its really great at rendering what I see but never transforms the scene into something other. So I rarely use it. I tend to go for a prime that can pop or move my feet so I can use a closer zoom. It’s just never been my ride.
Yeah, it has a versatile focal length and the useful IS, but I haven't used mine that was purchased a few years back because of the slower f/4. My go-to lenses are mostly the Lens Trinity and 85 f/1.2 L II. Not trendy but just a traditional collection that can stand the test of time.
