@@mellogan6796, yes, but they know how to use it to it's best effect. Even with the best photo equipment in your hands, you'd still take amateurish photos. Dude.
Agreed on all your points as to buy. But remember these comments are mainly correct on a full frame sensor. On an APS-C it becomes a small telephoto of around 80mm on Canons (75mm on Nikon & Sony etc) and the subsequent slight loss of depth of field by a 1.6 factor (1.5x factor on Nikon & Sony etc). But it is still THE lens to buy as a first lens for price, performance, optical quality and making you learn how to take great photos. Great video
Your video makes me very glad that I ordered this lens last week. I'm still awaiting its arrival and can hardly wait to try it out. Thanks so much Kellan!
Interesting video, though I'm a bit confused. I was recently looking into getting 24mm pancake and everyone said it's perfect, because it gets you close to the 50mm (24*1.6=38mm) while being super tiny. This 50mm on APC-S sensor (which the 50D is) turns the 50mm into 80mm, which is imo starting to get pretty inconvenient for general photography. I personally only ever use it for product photography and portraits, as anything else is just pain to frame right.
I started with the 50 1.8. I loved it so I got the sigma 50 1.4 art... it’s the same size as my 16-35 2.8 and is about a 3rd heavier... it’s a BEAST though
Size, Fantastic for travel Bokeh (because of 7 aperture blades) Shooting in Low Light (high aperture) Depth of Field Focal Length (field of view of eye) Affordable (f1.8: 125$) Tip: Flip the lens and use it as a macro lens
Oh yeah it only makes sense to have a shorter lens maybe even a 46mm or 40 mm is going to be better in low-light like doesn't have to go that far to travel
Tomos Snow it has a smaller sensor than a full frame camera, so if you have a one hundred mm lens, it appears as a 160 mm lens. In other words, it is cropped in 1.6 times. This is called an aps-c sensor.

Low f numbers are nice for low light, but be careful, they also reduce depth of field, so if the subject(s) are close to you (e.g. two people in front of you at some angle), you may end up with only one person in focus. I've mad this mistake with my Nikon 50mm 1.4 :(
Another great video! But with the 50mm canon lens you need to be roughlt 6 feet away from the camera with that 50mm lens on with a background that is 3 or 4 feet behind you to get that blurred effect do you not?
If size is what you are going for the EF 40mm f2.8 STM pancake is smaller and sharper. Same for the EF-S 24mm f2.8 STM pancake. I also the EF 50mm version 1 I bought in 1988 and the latest STM version that I got used last year cheap. I think the latter is the best of the two 50s. Other than that I agree with your points. :-)

er... Flip your Lens around for macro shots??? ( @4.53 ) are sure about that?.. I mean, how do you attach the lens the wrong way around to the camera body ? , have you got a video of you doing this by any chance? Thanks.
Thanks for the informative video. I'm a novice in photography and I recently purchased the Canon M50 and still awaiting delivery. I've been reading articles about focal length and aperture and have a question regarding the "nifty fifty". Question 1: Since the Canon M50 has a crop factor of 1.6x, if I want to purchase a "nifty fifty" should I look for a lens that is a (approx) 31mm f/1.8? (31mm being 50mm divide by 1.6). If I bought a 50mm f1.8 wouldn't give me the same capabilities you are talking about on my new Canon M50, correct? Question 2: Besides the aperture, is a 50mm on a telephoto lens same as fixed/prime lens? In other words, can I take the same photos using a telephoto/zoom lens at 50mm and take the same photo as a fixed/prime lens, given it's not a low light situation and amount of light wasn't a big factor, say during the day? Thanks for all the help!
Great questions! The 50mm f/1.8 will appear more like an 80mm lens on your cropped sensor camera, yes. So you could look to purchase a 35mm lens and get closer to that 50mm look. Sure you can take a similar looking photo by zooming to 50mm on a zoom lens as you might get with a 50 prime, however prime lenses tend to have a sharper image when you compare these too. You'll also get that much faster lens with the prime vs the zoom. Hopefully this helps.
