Hello Cpt. Another very nice and exciting video from the cold north! 😀 You can see your experience by looking at the taxiway conditions! 👌 I especially liked the ending, where you and your co can be seen outside of your machine! I can only say, it is again a very successful and beautiful video! I'm looking forward to the next one! With this in mind, I wish you and your crew a nice week! Greetings from Styria 🤗 Werner
So glad I found this channel. I always wanted to be a pilot but life took me other places and now I get to live vicariously through you! I do fly a lot, however, and so this just makes me look forward to getting back on a plane. Soon!
Thank you, I love these videos. Always professional with mutual respect between the Commander and First Officer. I love the little debriefs once you’ve parked up. Great for moral and is respectful.
I had a lot more snow in Vancouver when I landed in a snowstorm a week before Christmas. We had to wait 30 minutes for the ground crew to arrive so we could park at the gate. I enjoy your flights around Europe.
Thanks! You are right about the tricky conditions during the taxi. In anticipation of these conditions, we taxied very slowly. In the turns, you see on the navigation display only a taxi speed of 2 knots or so. The result was that we never skidded during the whole taxi to the gate.

@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Thank you for the answer. I appreciate your videos very much. The quality is very good. Also, I like that you have placed cameras at the displays and even show maps in the video on the side. Really thank you very much!
A couple years ago at Chicago O'Hare, a E145 went off the runway. I recently read a brief summary of the report, and when they started skidding they applied maximum braking -- a mistake! The best way to handle ice is no braking at all, or as little as possible. Obviously the best way to do *that* is to go as slow as possible in the first place -- Excellent taxiing here, and turning off the runway. I agree that single engine taxiing would have been very unwise! (I can even claim to have some real world experience: once in my life I've lost control of my car while driving on icy roads, and I like to think that my quick recovery from skidding to traction was a result of *not* panic applying my brakes. I let of both brakes and gas entirely and just kept my wheels straight until my traction came back.)
Thanks for watching and for sharing the information about the E145 incident at ORD airport. I fully agree to your statements. When taxiing in these conditions, you have to be very very slow during all turns. Being that slow helps to avoid skidding and if it happens that you are skidding, it won't have any bad outcome because you are very slow. During our flight in the video, our reward for being that slow was that we did not skid at all. Have a nice day!
Thanks a lot for the new video - approach & landing into snowy ❄️ Rovaniemi (RVN) 🇫🇮 That’s a nice contrast to the destinations in southern Europe 🇪🇺 In my opinion your channel is good to think about the Airbus procedures. I sometimes ask a friend of mine about them who is a Captain at Eurowings as well. For my personal use I recently bought a new 360 degrees camera and I gonna use and test it in the upcoming months. Maybe a 360 degrees camera (GoPro or Insta 360) could be an improvement for your YT-channel as well. I would love it. Please think about the idea 🎞️ Once again thanks for all your effort and great work! Shout-out to Airbus for the better LCD-Screens. I don’t like the old CRT-Screens 😜 Have a nice weekend! Lukas
Thank you so much for watching and the detailed feedback! I agree, the new screens are a great improvement. They are better readable and even have room for more information. I thought about using a 360 degree camera. My videos are all produced in 4k quality. The small 360 degree cameras which are currently available are not able to produce a straight 4k picture out of the 360 degree picture. We will only see 2.7 k or less. But I will keep your suggestion in mind and may come up with something in the future. Please stay tuned! Have a nice day!
Looking forward for the outbound flight, did you have to get the bird de-iced? That would be interesting for the video...Anyways, a butter landing as always captain, been learning a lot about CRM and the Airbus philosophy with your videos.
Thanks for watching and the detailed comment. No, deicing was not needed. The plane was completely free of ice or frost. The outbound video will be coming soon. Please stay tuned! Have a nice day!
The vertical speed selection was a "leftover" in the display. It was not activated and cleared by itself. As you can see in the FMA, we did use vertical speed mode at that time. The FMA is always the relevant source which tells us what mode the flight management and guidance system is using.
Just enjoyed your latest approach and departure vid Captain so it must be Saturday. Tell me, do you have some sort of noise-canceling device when you record the videos? Because there is hardly any engine noise in the background.
Yes, you are right: It is Saturday. In regard to the audio, you can hear the normal cockpit audio in the video. A good amount of that audio is from ventilation fans and, for example, from the landing gear. If you jump to the gear extension on the video, you hear the sound of the extending gear. The engines are far away from the cockpit. In some videos, I increased the level of the background sound channel on short final to hear some more of the engine sound. But this increases also the noise of the fans. Let me know if you would like to see this again.
Thank you for another fantastic video captain. I have a question, when taxiing, do you control the speed with small adjustments in thrust, or is the thrust from the idle engines enough for the maximum taxi speed, and you control speed with the brakes? Thank you so much!
Thanks for the good feedback and your question! Whenever possible, we taxi with idle thrust and reduce the number of brake applications because carbon brakes wear out by the number of applications. Depending on the weight and other variable circumstances like if engine anti ice is on, we may need a little amount of thrust to start the acceleration of the plane to taxi speed.
Great video. Thank you. I have a question, if you please have time. It is often said that the plane when landing "is stable". What does it mean and since when does it become stable? Thank you
Stable or stabilized is a term we usually use to describe the final setup and positioning for a landing. We are stabilized, when we do have the landing configuration (flaps and landing gear), the speed is at or near the final approach speed and the thrust is set accordingly. Coming close to the runway, we also want to make sure that the track we follow is the runway track and that our vertical speed is appropriate in relationship to the groundspeed and the slope of the approach. For example: On a 3 degree glideslope we have to use a descent rate of about groundspeed x 5 to stay exactly on that path. We normally say, only from a stabilized approach, we can make a nice landing.
A great video as always. Makes my Saturday evening, a beautiful approach with a beer in hand. What time of year was this, cause it looks like winter yet the daylight is good which I didn't expect?
Finland 🇫🇮 is a great destination. I can recommend Guesthouse Husky in Ivalo (IVL) - Great place for hiking, Husky and Reindeer sleigh rides, ice fishing and relaxing in March or April. With some luck you can see the magic northern lights (aurora borealis) 🍀 Amazing!
Beste Grüße an alle da draussen P.s.
Good morning captain . Wonderful landing .but have one doubt when you are pilot flying then why first officer is having hand on side stick. Just a doubt as I am simmer myself sir
Thanks for watching and the comment! During the approach, the pilot monitoring also has the stick at or near the stick. There are 2 reasons for that: The pilot monitoring has to be able to take over at any time and the push to talk button for the radio is located on the sidestick.
Questions: 1 why do both pilots have their hand on their sidestick? Isn't it supposed to be only the pilot flying? 2 and why was a flightattendant in the jumpseat? 3 are airports not required in the case of snow on the taxiway to clear the yellow line of snow? 4 i would like to see if the 2 engines exhaust melted the icy snow behind the plane?
The pilot flying has to have his or her hand at the stick to hand fly the airplane. During the approach, the pilot monitoring also has the stick at or near the stick. There are 2 reasons for that: The pilot monitoring has to be able to take over any time and the push to talk button for the radio is located on the sidestick. Airports are not required to clear taxiways of snow. Even the runway may be covered with snow. As long as the braking action on the runway would be ok, this is possible. Most of the time, the runways are deiced and only wet. The exhaust does not melt the ice during taxi because we taxi with very little or idle power. If we would increase the power to takeoff power I do assume that it may be possible that the snow and ice behind the plane may be melted and/or blown away.
Very interesting airport and landscape. I guess this is one of the perks as a pilot, that you see so much of our beautiful continent and planet. 👍 One question: Why was there no automatic "Minimums" callout this time?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! You are right. As pilots, we are able to get so many great views of the planet! That's one of the benefits of the job. This particular plane does not do the automatic minimum callout.
I agree. I expected some more snow. But the snow covered taxiways and the apron were very interesting. We see this very seldom. Also, the frozen rivers with the snow layers looked somehow different to me.
another awesome video...all brilliant by the crew...just i dont understand how is possible to have an airport open to the commercial traffic whit the taxy fully white frozen...i like to watch also the documentary...one is about Ted Stevense airport at Anchorage...to stay open they fight every day to clean non only the runways but also the taxys...in Rovaniemi the taxy was wonderfull....to have a bob competition....ok the captain is skillful an capable to face this situation in fully safety conditions...but the crew of the airport has only one runway and one taxy to take care, and their job must to be better, in my opinion. bottom line, congrats again Captain...well done despite all!!! Federico from Rieti🤗🤗🤗👋
Thanks for the friendly feedback and your detailed thoughts. In general, the airport decides whatever they want and have to do in regard of clearing the runways and the taxiways. When the snow is removed, they also have to make sure that the residual water does not freeze again and makes the taxiway even more slippery than before. I do assume that this needs chemicals which they only want to use if there are no other options. I am 100 % sure that airports like Rovaniemi do always the best for the actual weather situation. The winters up there are long and cold. The airport crew must be very experienced in regard to winter operations. I have no complaints: The runway was clear of snow and only wet. The plane decelerated very good on that runway. The taxiways were snow covered and we taxied with lots of caution. We did not skip or slip at any time.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos I Cap...of course glycolene an similar chemicals are really expensive, and to stay open and competitive, airports must fight non only the snow, but also the operative budget...and taxy in fresh snow, whit the proper care you do, is better and safer than taxy in frost ice...by the way tanks a lot not only to the time that you (and the staff behind the scenes, i guess) dedicate to produce this lovely contents, but also for answer to all of us, to explain de dynamics of your amazing job, A.K.A. our better dream. Next time, when you like to have a personal moment, try to turn your head to the empty jump seat, and try to close your eyes; you will find all of us, together with you!!!👍 tanks you all, waiting to board next flight, FedeLIQN.
In general, this is possible. But due to fact that the fixed camera locations in the cockpit are very limited, it is not that easy. I will keep your suggestion in mind.
Thanks for watching and for your good feedback! We had no snow tires! The tires are the same summer and winter. This is the reason why we had to taxi very carefully because we expected slippery taxiway and apron conditions. Have a great day!
We talk about QNH. This value is transmitted from ATC to the pilots. We set the value at the altimeter and then the altimeter shows the altitude of the airplane above mean sea level (MSL). Due to atmospheric pressure changes, this value changes constantly. We use this altitude during approaches and departures.
When we talk to ATC, we have to push a push to talk button on the sidestick. The channel to ground is not always open. We only transmit out of the airplane when we push the button.
Sehr gute Beobachtung!

Many thanks ;)
best channel 😍
Thank you so much! Please tell everybody about it!
A great video as always. Makes my Saturday evening, a beautiful approach with a beer in hand. What time of year was this, cause it looks like winter yet the daylight is good which I didn't expect?
Thanks for the good feedback! The video was recorded in winter. Not that long ago.
Yes! As I am from Finland, I was hoping that you got to fly north in the winter season, did you get to fly to Kittilä as well?
Finland 🇫🇮 is a great destination. I can recommend Guesthouse Husky in Ivalo (IVL) - Great place for hiking, Husky and Reindeer sleigh rides, ice fishing and relaxing in March or April. With some luck you can see the magic northern lights (aurora borealis) 🍀 Amazing!
I did not fly to Kittilä until now. May be in the future. Greetings to Finland!

Beste Grüße an alle da draussen
Good morning captain . Wonderful landing .but have one doubt when you are pilot flying then why first officer is having hand on side stick. Just a doubt as I am simmer myself sir
Because she is communicating with the atc
Thanks for watching and the comment! During the approach, the pilot monitoring also has the stick at or near the stick. There are 2 reasons for that: The pilot monitoring has to be able to take over at any time and the push to talk button for the radio is located on the sidestick.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos thank you for reply sir
Questions:
1 why do both pilots have their hand on their sidestick?
Nice one 👍✈️
Thanks a lot!
Nice outro. 👍🏻
Thanks for the feedback!
Danke!
Danke fürs Anschauen!
Where was the snow? The airport is so far north, I expected it would be several metres deep!
Is there any possibility of including in a video the engine start procedure including the visual display, or is this not allowed?
Thanks
Chris
In general, this is possible. But due to fact that the fixed camera locations in the cockpit are very limited, it is not that easy. I will keep your suggestion in mind.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos thank you very much for your reply! Completely understand the logistics side!
Many thanks, Chris
very nice approach! I hope you had your snow tires on 😂. By the way, no Tango in the cockpit, not even to the right 😂😂😂
Thanks for watching and for your good feedback! We had no snow tires! The tires are the same summer and winter. This is the reason why we had to taxi very carefully because we expected slippery taxiway and apron conditions. Have a great day!
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos I was joking! Hm
Good morning ...
Hello to you!
What is q and h please from Alan in Suffolk 🇬🇧
We talk about QNH. This value is transmitted from ATC to the pilots. We set the value at the altimeter and then the altimeter shows the altitude of the airplane above mean sea level (MSL). Due to atmospheric pressure changes, this value changes constantly. We use this altitude during approaches and departures.
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos ah okay vielen dank!
Talking to ground, is the channel open all the time without need for push-to-talk-button, or how does it work?
When we talk to ATC, we have to push a push to talk button on the sidestick. The channel to ground is not always open. We only transmit out of the airplane when we push the button.
How old does the a320 have to be do have that display placement?
I do not know the exact age of the plane.
D-ABNU is over 17 years old (planespotters net)
Newer aircraft display Baro and Radio instead on the MCDU
Who was the person in the jump seat?
A flight attendant.
This flight was done 01.03.2023
Due to privacy reasons, I do not release the exact date and/or time of a flight. I ask for your understanding.
Gravity was not your fiend! It made you pay that 10cm! 😂😂😂
Right. Maybe a small upslope or so stopped us about 10 cm before the final parking position was reached.
Btw right now we have propably more military plane in rovaniemi than civilian :D.
This may be the case. Times are changing.
I realize how I miss old CEOs while watching this.
Thanks for watching and your feedback!
I’ve never heard that one before…
Thanks for watching. I hope that you liked it! Have a good day!
Mmmm, not just the main flight crew on deck on approach,
But only for a few minutes.
I knew a guy on charlie and he didn't go right at all.
Hahhahhah CRT EFIS
Funktioniert auch ganz ordentlich.
