    I dont knows what to say! From the beginning, when you expanded the size of your base fabric to cutting portions of the doilies to have enough. I love it!

    I have two sets of Dresden blocks made by my Grandmother Ethel Adela and her sister my Great Aunt Elsie in 1927. I have several doilies they made and some my Mother Jean made in 1947. I recently laid them all out on my sewing table and wondered how I could incorporate them. Eureka! Your Junk Journal is the perfect answer. Thank you for sharing your beautiful creation.
    Blessings, Dawn

    Oh my gosh Fallon!!! My 2 weaknesses-dresdens & doilies 🥰 I love how this turned out! A friend of mine did something similar years ago with doilies-I don't think she did dresdens, though.

    Fallon, that’s a FABULOUS quilt! I’m a doily junkie and this is a terrific idea to use the ones I have but no longer display. I’m adding this quilt to my to do list. If you make another one, antique doilies are made with cotton thread. They were starched with heavy starch by soaking and pinned out to dry. So you can starch them within an inch of their life, stretch them out, then press to flatten. The ruffled or pleated ones were shaped during drying. I recommend avoiding those unless you’re making an art quilt. I used to make doilies. It was great fun!

    • @sewbeitquilts
      @sewbeitquilts  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for the tips. I decided to try ironing them and that helped so much. Since I am unfamiliar with doilies I was concerned about what might happen to them if they become wet or heated. I really appreciate the help!

    That blue binding really made the quilt sing. Way to deal with a difficult technique, incorporating stretchy doilies into a quilt. Your Dresden's are perfect, I struggle with making those. Good job Fallon!!

    Love your idea! Starching the doilies and blocking them is a great idea. They might not stretch as mych when you sew them on.
    You might consider a blanket stitch around the dresden petals for a more shabby chic look. Possibly finish the quilting and then add the doiles to make the quilting pricess easier. I'm adding this to my list of projects. Thank you!

    • @sewbeitquilts

      A blanket stitch would work wonderful! My machine that is mainly out only has a straight stitch and I didn’t think to set up my other machine! I wish I did!

    Great video. I recently made 9 Dresden Plates on 20" backgrounds. I will be using them as centers for medallion quilts for donation. I made my circles very easily. Cut your fabric and a piece of interfacing the same size. Place the interfacing on the right side of the fabric and sew a 1/4" in from the outside edge. Carefully pull the interfacing away from the fabric and snip a cross about an inch each way in the center. Turn the circle right side out through this hole, and press. No need to turn anything under or use glue. You can also put in a thin layer of batting to make your center puffy. I do that for children's quilts.

    Once you flip the Dresden petal and ready to press. I use the cardboard from a charm pack and stick the corner of the cardboard inside the Dresden petal and line the seam up with a line I've drawn from corner to corner. Then press all petals will be the same size.

    Wonderful! I think a glide quilting foot would work beautifully for quilting this. It's the clear, bowl-shaped foot that has no edges to catch on the threads of the crochet work.

    I have never heard of a junk journal before. I have made four Dresden Plate Quilts. I used to crochet doilies for my mother when I was young. You can starch them heavily and dry them flat. However, a ruffled doily will not lay flat; because, it has a lot of extra threat worked into it to make it ruffle. Press (don't iron) doilies. Your quilt is very interesting.
