I also love the quilt but the best part of this video is your unbridled enthusiasm! I appreciate all of your content but "lessons from and old quilt" are always my favorite. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and passion with us!
Oh, thank you so much! I am thrilled that my excitement shows on video, too! I really do love these old quilts. You are so kind! Thank you for watching, too. ❤️
Vintage quilts are treasures. However, I like your tutorials so much better. I learn much more with those, even though I have been sewing for many years. New techniques, new ideas are my thing. Your tutorials are great.😊❤
Wow! Thank you so much! I know many people love these old quilts and while they are fun videos to make, I love making tutorials! Thank you for your kindness! So happy you love my tutorials! ❤️
I really like the colors/fabrics used in this quilt and the fact that the maker used one color for binding and the fancy cross pieces in each dresden. It's brilliant! I love scrappy! But this detail really calmed the scrappy chaos. The fabrics play so well together!! It's a treasure! Don't you wish the label was complete with the maker's name?
Oh my goodness! Do I ever! I do love it when I get information about the maker. I am thrilled you love this one! I find so many wonderful ideas in these old quilts that I put into action on my own quilts. They really are treasure trove of wonderful idea, just like in this one. So happy you enjoyed exploring this with me! Thank you SO much for watching! I have many more to come!
That quilt is sssoooo pretty! What a bargain too - glad you got it and were able to share it with us - Lessons from an old quilt is the best series on TH-cam!!
Awww! Thank you SO much! The series is completely thanks to the Good Lord. The series idea came to me during a prayer walk. ❤️ So happy you love this series!
I love this quilt so much! Partly because I just love Dresden quilts but also because this one is so unique! I love the purple cross designs but as a bonus the centers are so unique too! What a great find!
So beautiful! It's delicate but colorful and fun! I smiled when you showed the fussy cutting. It reveals the personality of the quilter a bit - her sense of glamor or fun or whatever. Thank you so much for sharing!
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching! You are right! It really does speak to the maker's personality. I love the surprises in this quilt. So much fun!
I saw this quilt when you showed us your sewing room and hoped you would show us ,it shows that we worry too much about little things when quilting its ,i often see quilters say its not pefect, well they dont need to be pefect ,the Dresden plate quilt is beautiful
Yay! I am so happy you love this one. YES! We get too worried about perfection, don't we? This is a perfect example of how imperfections are perfect, too. Thank you so much for watching and enjoying this quilt. 🥰
This quilt pattern is featured in the book Fancy to Frugal by Kay Connors and Karen Earlywine. It is a collection of authentic quilt patterns from the 30's. The directions for this quilt begin on page 18 and show a picture of the original pattern which was McCalls #74. The pattern even came with the quilting design which could be copied and hand quilted. The original quilt also has an incredible border design which is really cool. I bought the book explicitly for this quilt pattern. With modern techniques it's really not that difficult to make. 😊
Thanks for the information. As for difficulty, I think it is all relative. We are all at different places in our quilting journeys. For me, the piecing isn’t the difficult part but that dense hand-quilting with those beautiful even stitches makes it a masterpiece. Others may struggle with making the templates or the applique or whatever it may be. Thank you so much for watching and sharing your insight on this one. I have also found this pattern in old magazine-it is a real gem, isn’t it? ❤️
Great video, Kris! I was gifted with an identical patterned Dresden Plate quilt (different colors, though) that was started around 1934 and came from a McCall's pattern. My quilt also has 24 plates but is a little larger at 78 x 110 (weighs 5 pounds!) and has an "Ice Cream Cone" border. Half of the plates were hand quilted, all the other quilting (thankfully!) was done, but the border was unbound. I finished hand quilting the remaining plates and finished binding the border, and it took me 152 hours! I--too--would like to wash mine but am afraid to do so. I was told that the fabrics for the plates came from a local apron factory at little or no cost. They are REAL 1930's prints! Whoo-hoo! 🤩
A friend inherited a similar quilt, all hand quilted and done by a distant relative. She wanted to make it smaller as it was to big for the spare bed. I spent weeks trying to dissuade her. Then realised that it wasn’t my job to dictate to her what she should or shouldn’t do. So I took one row out, remade the bottom of the quilt and it does indeed look better on the bed. But I couldn’t let those spare Dresden plates be cast aside so I made two cushions to go with the quilt so that the work lived on albeit in a différent format. This quilt also wasn’t labelled which was such a shame as the maker remains unknown.
Kris, this quilt is amazing! Thank you for sharing. Tomorrow I will be going to an antique quilt display at a historic home in our area. The quilts range from mid 1800s to 1930s or 40s. I thought of you when I found out.
Hi Kris, I love Dresden quilts, and I’m just so envious you found this beauty. All that handsewing blows my mind! The maker so creative…love it. Thanks for sharing. 💕🇦🇺
Dear Kris, What an amazing quilt! Thank you for buying it! Thank you for sharing it with us! What a wonderful find on your vacation. I just love the definition between the curved blades and the pointed ones. The middle has a cathedral windows effect. Take care. Marion in Oregon.that
Hi Marion! So happy you love this! It really is amazing, isn't it? What a great eye! It does look like a cathedral windows block! Wow! I didn't notice that. Thanks so much for sharing!
I absolutely adore antique quilts. I have one made in 1905 by the grandmother of a board member of the Non-profit where i use to work. She donated the quilt to our fundraising Gala. The first bid by some lady was $5! 😡 I came along and bid $200 cuz I KNOW how much love and labor went into it. I won it and will cherish it forever. PS- I love yours!!
I love the Dresdens - one of my favorite blocks, and it's more versatile than it first appears. This quilt maker put a lot of thought (and effort - all that hand-sewing - yikes!) into this quilt, and it's really nice. I hope you're able to make the necessary repairs and get some of the stains out. This one is definitely worth the effort.
So happy you love this one as much as I do. It is amazing! Once the weather gets a bit better, I am going wash this one and hang it outside to dry in an effort to brighten the white. I feel the same way--so worth the effort. Thank you so much for watching and sharing!
This is one of the best old scrappy quilts you've shown us. The maker chose and placed her fabrics well, the overall design is great and the construction very skilled. Btw, if you want to sew in and hide the threads on the back, you'll save yourself a lot of annoyance by using a self-threading needle.
I am very lucky to have a queen size quilt that my Aunt and her friends did also all hand done . It's chocolate brown and gold satin with a large rose quilted in the center. It was done in the mid 60s I just love it
i love this. I love learning the history. And Dresdens are my favorite block. Thanks Kris for showing these quilts again and again. I enjoy your channel.
Dresden plates are my favourite blocks. I never really thought about combining the pointed blade with the rounded ones. Looks really good. I love all the quilting that has gone into it, also the rounded corners of the quilt blends in the the roundness of the blocks. I have nothing constructive to say, I just simply love it.
All the Dresden Plate quilts I have made had 12 blades (except one). The exception was the Stack and Whack, 11 blade, Elvis Presley print, double bed quilt (that I made for fun) and gave to a co-worker (who had gone through some very depressing losses in a short period of time). I had misplaced the template that I used to cut my 12 blade versions when I moved. So I found a printable template and copied it on to some clear plastic (that another co-worker gave to me). I bought the Elvis Presley print fabric at the old Walmart. I was told that she cried when she opened the big bag and found the quilt. A few days later she whispered to me, "This may sound dirty; but, I slept with Elvis Last night." Eleven (blades) is an odd number. Elvis Presley was a lot different (odd) from other singers (which is why so many of us loved him so much and still do). Yes, Dresden Plate quilts are beautiful. Yours is very special also. Thank you for this video.
Wow! What a great experience! Thank you for sharing this, especially about Elvis. I remember my mom crying when Elvis died, but I was too young to really understand. My parents listened to his music growing up, however. So interesting yours had only 12 blades! I will have to check that design out! Thank you so much for sharing. This is wonderful!
Fabulous lovely quilt. There are so many neat things about it! But one of the most enchanting is the "Easter egg" element--fussy cut piece that you might not notice on first glance. Adorable!! Now I want to put one of these in my next quilt. Thanks again, Kris, for the super fun video. I can tell you adore this old darling!
I really do love this one! It makes it extra special that I got it on a vacation with my mom to celebrate the end of her cancer treatments. I didn't mention this part in the video, but I really should have, because it is almost a quilt of hope or something. Super special one, for sure. I love that you love it, too! Thank you for sharing and watching. 🥰
So cool that you love your mom and celebrate the end of cancer treatment. Moms can be the absolute best in our lives! I adored my darling mother (who died at age 99!) And I am close to my daughter. I make quilts for guess who! Daughter, if course!
'Fan'tastic quilt story. What a treasure. Thank you for all your dedication to bring us the history of our art. What surprises will you find in my quilts? 🎶💐💖
I like that the binding matches the pointed blades. I wonder if the maker didn’t bury the threads because they ran out of time before gifting or may not have been taught to do so.
Oh, that could be it! I wonder if that is it. I am so surprised the quilting hasn't pulled out over the years. Glad it didn't. Thanks so much for watching, Joe!
Oh my gosh Kris! I LOVE it!!!! It is so beautiful. I love it. You are so lucky to have it. Kris you mean you have 70 old quilts! Wow! What a deal. Kris, now be careful thinking 1962 was so lomg ago ... I was 9 years old! Hahahaha, 2 years later in 1994 the Beatles were on Ed Sulivan! Yes, My favorite back then, I ran track with a little radio and something similar (but not nearly so good) as ear buds you pluged the cord into the radio! Oh what memories. One of their top songs was Michelle but mine is spelled MiChelle, so is my Daughters and 2 of my granddaughters.
Love this! 🥰 My husband was born in the 1960s and I always tease him about it. I was born in 1972, but still--that's a totally different time period, right? 😀 I actually have a quilt in my collection that is pre-Civil War. That's the oldest one I have, however. The majority in my collection are from between 1900s-1940s. If you are interested, here's the pre-Civil War quilt video: th-cam.com/video/5gOxrsHAGT8/w-d-xo.html
Beautiful quilt! I’m currently bidding on an antique quilt at an auction (you’ve inspired me!) and hoping I can snatch it up 🤞. Love your shirt - where did you get it?
Yay! So happy I have inspired you! Fingers crossed that you get it. 🥰 I got my shirt on Amazon. Here's a link: amzn.to/4arVke0 Make sure you size up if you get it. They run small. Hope this helps! ❤️
It is a great quilt, for sure! I got my shirt from Amazon. Here's a link: amzn.to/4a94yfc Hope this helps! If you get one, make sure to size up. They run really small.
This is a spectacular quilt and it does seem spring-like with its colors. It is so strange that a person of obvious piecing and quilting talent did not bury the threads on the back! My mind immediately made up a story that her recently married daughter need the quilt to stay warm and took it even though that one last detail wasn't done. She probably thought it didn't matter. We'll never know, so any story could be the reality.
That is a great theory! You are just like me--I love thinking about this stuff and then making up stories (that I sometimes think are real! 😀) about the quilt, the odd thing about it, whatever! Glad I am not the only one! Thank you so much for watching and sharing your theory. I hope you are right because it is my favorite theory so far. 🥰
I like the purple color to bring everything together. Do you think that the one piece that didn’t match the others is a patch. I’m wondering if you can tell whether the fabric is 100% cotton or whether it feels like a cotton polyester blend. I have several quilts from my grandmothers that have clumped batting like that.
I love the purple, too! Great question! As far as I can tell, all of the fabric is 100% cotton. At first I thought the odd piece was a repair, but on further inspection, it isn't. My guess is the maker simply ran out of one of the fabrics, but who knows. I just love the clumping. Not sure why, but I do. 😀 I love that you have some of your grandmother's quilts! So wonderful! Thank you so much for watching and sharing!
I quilted with a lady who pulled the knot through the backing to bury it. As her vision deteriorated many times she didn't realize that the thread tangled and the knot didn't pull through into the batting. Possibly what happened on that one...
Interesting and beautiful quilt. Would love to recreate this what size are the blades? Maybe do,some videos on recreation of this block would be awesome
I am currently on vacation, so I am not sure, but I can find out when I get home. I do like recreating blocks for videos. I am not sure about this one, however.I am not that great at appliqué. Let me see what I can do! Thank you so much for watching and sharing!
Aloha! Such a great question! I stuff them into every corner of my house. LOL! I have them everywhere! I can't seem to part with any of them. I have well over 100 in my collection now. At some point I will probably end up selling some, but I can't decide which ones. I love them all. We are never cold, that's for sure. ❤️

Love these beautiful old quilt blogs and am never disappointed at your summing up, this one’s a beauty. I’d like to see it after it’s washed. 😊
Thank you so much! I am hoping to wash it when the weather gets a bit better and I can wash it outside by hand. Stay tuned. ❤️
Thank you for sharing this beautiful quilt Kris. Love the pattern and so much admiration for the creator of this quilt ❤

Most beautiful "old quilt" you have showed us to date. Thank you for sharing your passion of these quilts with us.
It is my pleasure! I am so happy you love this one! God bless! 🥰

Loved the idea in this quilt of adding a purple cross like design to rack plate. How clever. Thanks for sharing 😊
You are so welcome! It really is a beautiful example of a fancy Dresden plate quilt. So glad you enjoyed this!
I finished hand quilting the remaining plates and finished binding the border, and it took me 152 hours! I--too--would like to wash mine but am afraid to do so. Oh wow! What a wonderful treasure! So happy you saved it! Thank you so much for watching and sharing your experience with this. ❤️
A friend inherited a similar quilt, all hand quilted and done by a distant relative. She wanted to make it smaller as it was to big for the spare bed. I spent weeks trying to dissuade her. So true! Amazing talent.
I absolutely love this quilt. Thinking I should get the Accuquilt die for it.
Ohhhh--do they have one for this? Looking now! Thanks for the tip!
It's not quite like that beautiful quilt but it could work with some modifications. However the die is out of stock.
Oh no! Bummer. Hopefully it is back in stock soon!
It’s a great pattern
It really is! Love it!

Dear Kris,
What an amazing quilt! Thank you for buying it! Thank you for sharing it with us! What a wonderful find on your vacation.

Isn't a great one? Love it too!
That is a beauty!
Isn't it? Love the dense quilting in the middle and the loose threads on the back. So curious about that! Thank you so much for watching!
It is so beautiful!
Isn't it? Love the purple and the fussy cutting on the blades. So cool! Thank you so much for watching! ❤️
Beautiful quilt! I’m currently bidding on an antique quilt at an auction (you’ve inspired me!) and hoping I can snatch it up 🤞. Love your shirt - where did you get it?
Yay! So happy I have inspired you! Fingers crossed that you get it. 🥰
I got my shirt on Amazon. Here's a link: amzn.to/4arVke0
Make sure you size up if you get it. They run small. Hope this helps! ❤️
I LOVE this quilt! Also where did you get your shirt?
It is a great quilt, for sure! I got my shirt from Amazon. Here's a link: amzn.to/4a94yfc Hope this helps! If you get one, make sure to size up. They run really small.
Thanks.
You're welcome! Thank you for watching! ❤️
Lucky you!
Thanks. I am always on the hunt. 🥰
This is a spectacular quilt and it does seem spring-like with its colors. It is so strange that a person of obvious piecing and
quilting talent did not bury the threads on the back!
My wedd8ng quilt I did hand. It was a dresden plate.
Oh, that's awesome! Thank you for sharing!
Beautiful
I love it, too! Especially the quilting. It reminds me of sunflowers. Love that!
Thank you for watching! ❤️
I quilted with a lady who pulled the knot through the backing to bury it. As her vision deteriorated many times she didn't realize that the thread tangled and the knot didn't pull through into the batting. Possibly what happened on that one...
Oh, wow! That could be it! Thank you so much for this!
That took LOTS of work!
It sure does! So many steps, too!
I meant to ask in my comment, where did you get that white strip holding the iron and scissors? Thank you.
No problem! I got it at Lowes. Here's a link to it: www.lowes.com/pd/Style-Selections-SS-6-Hook-White-Flat-Rail/5005328043
Hope this helps!
@@SewtheDistance thank you!
Have you seen the Double Dresden Pattern by Me & My Sister designs??
I just looked it up! Love the secondary pattern with a star. So pretty! Thank you for sharing!
@@SewtheDistance You are welcome! Used it to make a table topper when it 1st came out.
Aloha from Hawaii.
What do you do with all these quilts after you review them???
Aloha! Such a great question! I stuff them into every corner of my house. LOL! I have them everywhere! I can't seem to part with any of them. I have well over 100 in my collection now. At some point I will probably end up selling some, but I can't decide which ones. I love them all. We are never cold, that's for sure. ❤️
I’ve noticed you are losing weight! Looking great! What’s your secret? Haha
Thank you! 🥰 Hoping to lose some more before bathing suit season. 😬
Beautiful quilt
I think so too! ❤️
