Openshot version 2.6.1: how to modify video speed to any custom speed.

  • If you want to change the speed of your video, Openshot has preset speeds you can choose from: 2x, 4x, 8x, or 16x the original speed to increase, or 1/2x, 1/4x, 1/8x or 1/16x to decrease.
    But what if you would like to speed up your video by 1.5x or by 1.25x? Or decrease its speed to only 1/3 of its original speed?
    I'll show you how in this video.
    Download your free video editor from the Openshot website: www.openshot.o...

    Thank you for explaining this useful skill. This steps in this video is for speeding up a clip starting from beginning of the video source. To deal with a clip starting from the middle of the video source, here are my steps:
    1. Apply time -> normal -> 1x.
    2. Drag the position to the end of clip, and set the following attributes in order:
    (Let S be the start, E be the end, and T be the time of the clip)
    a. Set End = S + (E-S) / speedup
    b. Move the cursor to the new position and set it again: End = S + (E-S) / speedup
    c. Set Time = T
    3. Done
    I found that 2-b. is needed to get it work. Just don't know why.

    Why is it so difficult to change video speed in Openshot? I'm just going to switch to a different video editor.

      i would seperate hastened audio and use different software to pitch it down, and then import it again.

    I appreciate the video, but I could not do this to slow down the video (for a specific exact amount).
    It just played as normal and put the end frame as a still for the remaining extended time.
    EDIT: I successfully 'bodged it' I think - I wanted it slowed by a factor of 0.72. I used the 'automatic' function to slow by 0.5 and then used your trick to speed it up slightly to 0.72.
    Looks like THAT worked it - Thank you

    Hard to follow and not intuitive at all. I need only a portion of video to move so the total time does not factor in at all for me. Why can't they just make us drag it left or right and it adjust?

    What about when you need to do this on a clip that was taken from the middle of a full video? The Duration and End values aren't the same.

      Ctrl+K at the beginning and end values where you want to change speed then use this videos guidance and replace the new video to where you spliced it out.

    Vido didn't helped. At 2:12 Time had the original value already. I have been increasing length of a track instead of shrinking it, maybe that's the cause

      It's the bottom most property in the properties pane at the left. If you don't see this properties pane go to the "View" menu - "Docks" - check mark "properties". I'm aware that there is a little discrepancy between the spoken word in my video and the values that appear on the the screen, e.g 1.509 - the value that appears on the screen is 1.503...

    as i did apply the given method for 1.5x speed, the embedded audio gets a ripple effect of the original audio and high pitch audio. suggest the remedy.

    • @yosefk2864
      @yosefk2864  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When speeding up a video with an audio track, also the audio track will get speeded up resulting in distortion. I suggest setting the volume to zero. You can do this by right clicking on the clip in the time line, volume, zero

      @@yosefk2864 So then how do I preserve the audio? Or do you suggest recording new audio for the clip? I am trying to compact a 1.25m video to below 1m and I need the audio track as well

    • @yosefk2864
      @yosefk2864  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MyViewsOfTheWorld In case the audio gets distorted too much I would suggest either recording the audio anew with the requested length or changing the speed of the audio separately using a program like Audacity (which is free); under the "Effects" menu there's an option to "Change speed". It will give you a much less distorted result than doing this with Openshot. Hope this is of any help.

    did this at 1.5 speed and it sounds like another voice was created. 1 with my voice at I'd expect it at 1.5 speed (quick but still deep voice) and then another overlay of a chipmunk voice echoing everything I say....

    • @yosefk2864
      @yosefk2864  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've seen this problem mentioned in forums. I don't think Openshot has a build in solution to it. I would suggest to strip the audio from your original video and use a program like Audacity to change the speed and afterwards add that to your up-speeded video. This is probably not the most convenient but as a workaround it should give the desired result.
