FINALLY! A video made for BEGINNERS. TH-cam seems to be full of presentations made by people who have forgotten what it's like to learn a new skill. At last, someone who actually explains how to get started and not how to use an editor when you have been doing it for 15 years! Thanks for taking the trouble to explain the basics!

Best 36 minutes in recent memory. I did video editing 30 years ago and it was all 3/4" analog so digital editing was completely new. I've been piling up drone footage and knew I had to learn to edit again if i ever wanted anyone to see it. One short tuorial later I'm ready to start editing it.

This is one of the best tutorials I've ever seen. You don't jump over things that you think people already know, you show us the various options we have to do things, and you don't jump around and confuse us. Clearly, you put a lot of work into this. It's very much appreciated! I'm now ready to tackle video editing. I've been confused, irritated, and lost before, but you've given me the confidence to try it. OpenShot seems to be the most straight forward software you can find. Thank you so much for this step-by-step tutorial!

Kevin: You Sir have a definite knack for teaching. The student can probably learn more in a little over half an hour watching one of your videos than they could by reading a manual on the subject for several hours. Another excellent concept that is unique to Your video is the fact that you have been generous enough to include a dozen files to practice with. Learn-by-doing. I couldn't agree more. Fantastic and educational video instruction. Many Thanks for a task very well executed. Barry Howard Begley.

I was overwhelmed a couple hours ago when I finally decided to try editing my first video. Google is my best tool for overwhelm, and you are now the love of my life...in a granny loves you sort of a way! I watched one "beginner" video before yours, apparently created for beginners with a grasp of the lingo and some experience editing with other software, and was thoroughly disheartened, as I'd had that experience at so many points in the creating and filming process, being the generation just before computers came home and cell phones filled every hip pocket. I didn't know how I was going to ever learn these skills, but figured I'd try a few more videos before I gave up. Your instructions were so clear and following along, pausing and practicing on my own clips, was painless. I also notice that, now that I have the basic idea, the other features are at least somewhat intuitive. This is no small favor you just did me! It's a business changer. Thank you so so so much!

In a future video, could you go over how to use hardware acceleration? I'm on Windows 10 with a 3070 card, but I'm not sure if hardware acceleration is enabled or not.

This is one of the most useful tutorials I've seen on youtube. I'm transitioning from other software to this and open-shot seems way more user friendly. One thing I wanted to express is this: as I was going through the video I would ask what something was or why something was doing this or that, in my head, and every single time i asked the question, it was answered by you a moment later. Your teaching style is very thorough, and I was surprised at the amount of information there was in this short video. I am beyond appreciative and thankful for your hard work...you rock

Conventional education is so inefficient, but you bring brevity and clarity, because you do the prep and have your materials well organised and logically sequenced. I'll go through your tutorial as often as I need to till I become proficient. Speaking personally, I apprecieted the way you showed the many alternative ways to operate the controls. Yo da man!

Amazing tutorial! I've started to use Openshot for simple editing and this is really helpful. Something I would add, not sure if this happens in all the versions, but I had to set the project profile resolution before starting importing videos for it to be able to export in the correct resolution afterwards. By default the profile is HD 720p 30fps (it says so in the title bar), if I wanted to then export in 4K it would export it with crappy resolution in my case. I solved it by changing the profile BEFORE importing files by clicking file => choose profile and choosing 4K in my case.

OpenShot had been my favorite for editing small videos for some time but not any more. It's recent updates starting from V.2.5.1 have been unusable due to excessive lagging issues. In these later versions, the playhead does not move at all or moves extremely slowly thus making it impossible to edit videos. This made me to switch on to another video editor and I am sorry to see that a nice simple video editor like OpenShot has come to this fate!!

At 20:20, a better way to remember the hotkeys is to focus on which part they delete, rather than which part they leave:
All three hotkeys put a cut, and split the clip in two halves.
    That is the common part.
But the difference to remember is this:
    1. The middle key (K) does not delete any part
    2. The left key (J) deletes the left half, and
    3. The right key (L) deletes the right half.
This makes it simpler to remember!
BTW, these same functions are also available with a single-key hotkeys: A, S, and D.
These keys are also located adjoining each other on the keyboard

Thank you Kevin, learning a lot about OpenShot from you and other experience video creators on TH-cam. I am Newbie on OpenShot. Used to use GoPro Quik from my phone to make quick videos after teaching tennis on court to make qucik lesson and tips videos but this new video editor has really sparked my interest and enjoying learning it. One question, how do I put 20 or 20 small video clips together one one track so they don't overlap? For example, I just received an amazing serve contraption tool from a tennis company and am testing it out after a lot of frustration from my homemade serve contraption tool which worked for a while. I have tested this amazing new serve fence tool with various ages starting from 5 year juniors to adult all skill groups in my tennis program over several weeks this year. Am trying to put short videos but about 15 to 20 and put them together in one track so it flows. I want tennis players and coaches to see how great this tool is and how I have tested it and showing it works. Being new to Openshot wanted to pick your brain, am sure the answer is simple but I am a novice.
    Thank you!

As an educator I can unequivocally state that this is a very high quality tutorial 👌 However you have managed to include a huge amount of data, specifically for complete novices. IMHO I would have made a shorter video discussing more about the terminology before presenting this excellent work flow. Having made this comment I still have a high regard for your excellent presentation skills. 🤝

Thank you Kevin. Your presentation is simple and systematically done with lots of details pre-planned to make the teaching "flow smoothly" and less confusing. Of course, there's an awful lot feature that cannot be taught at one go because of the limited video time. Thank you very much.

Job well done. Great for those who have no/limited background. This is the only, and best, I've found. Totally agree with 'Let's go solo' below. I would only offer that it would help to speak more slowly, so we can follow more easily. But congratulations. Others can learn from you.

I have been frozen in fear to learn this for over five years. My plan is to start a youtube video I have a bunch of ideas to post and have already done a bunch of videos but been scared to death to learn its been intimidating to say the least I down loaded this program I am forcing myself to learn if I don't learn my TH-cam will never get launched

Tube wont let me reply direct I couldn't find your reply to my reply. Don't feel like the lone ranger I just turned 65 this year I cannot believe time is going way too fast . I tried to use open shot and the video goes really slow that I down load to work with . I started last night off of one of my files I stored in my puter I thought well maybe its because of the file so I went direct off a card reader and same thing then it locked up and after I deleted the file in open shot and returned it when I didn't need it . It is just not working I had to delete the whole thing really screwed up. I am going to have to get something eles its not working. Hang in there I know how you feel

    • @thegringobaker
      @thegringobaker 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@madmanmechanic8847 Is it going slow in the preview? I had that issue and found that if I hit the fast forward arrow it went at a speed that was close to normal. After exporting, the resulting video ran at the correct speed.
