    Great work, thanks for this. I've just put a new Pioneer head unit in my Prado, and did buy an after-market converter for the steering wheel controls. But I was mystified as to how it worked - how so many buttons could send signals over basically 2 wires, one of which is ground! I was even thinking maybe it was serial RS232 data. But now I know - not RS232, but much simpler and very clever. I wish I'd seen this before I did the job.

    On my ford transit there is no cable in the harness for the steering wheel controls. The BEMM manual (body equipment mounting manual) says there should be 2 pins for steering control. They don’t exist in my van so how would I go about testing which wires input steering wheel controls into the radio?

    • @MaxELECTRONICS
      @MaxELECTRONICS  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you don’t have any cables in your steering wheel you’d have to buy the “spring cable” that goes into steering wheel. Then you’ll be able to connect the buttons.

    • @tomloweshow
      @tomloweshow ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MaxELECTRONICS I’ll have to have a look inside my steering wheel, there are buttons that controlled the OE radio (skip/rewind track, volume and voice recognition). There should be cables into the harness in theory but I can’t fathom why they’re not there and how the radio previously operated perfectly 🤯

    • @MaxELECTRONICS
      @MaxELECTRONICS  ปีที่แล้ว

      @tomloweshow you can have a look at the datasheet of the current radio you have and see what pin is remote. Or you can open steering wheel and check for continuity with multimeter

    I have a Pioneer radio. Will the Sony resistor setup work the same way on my Pioneer?

    • @MaxELECTRONICS
      @MaxELECTRONICS  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends, check if your pioneer has learning function for the steering control, then any steering control will work. If it doesn’t you can try to see if it’s gonna work as is, if not you’ll need to resolder your steering wheel resistors.

    hi, very informative video. Do you know if chineese head unit devices do in the same principle? There only KEY1 (and KEY2) wires, no 3.5 jack for SWC. What voltage they are using?

    So I'm assuming the seek buttons work as track up and down on the USB and cd player(if equipped)?

  • @raymondgabriel5724
    @raymondgabriel5724 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My Mazda steering controls seem to work backwards. I have not analysed the circuit, but based on my multimeter readings: no buttons = 5KΩ, then it drops off depending on the button: mute = 2KΩ, mode = 1KΩ, down = 550Ω, up = 300Ω, vol+ = 150Ω, vol- = 55Ω. I think I need to somehow reverse this so no buttons = no resistance, then it adds resistance on pressing of buttons.

    • @MaxELECTRONICS
      @MaxELECTRONICS  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can remove “termination” resistor, some steering wheels have termination resistors that complete the circuit, they usually required for OEM head units.

    • @raymondgabriel5724
      @raymondgabriel5724 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MaxELECTRONICS I'll check the board and see. Your video is excellent by the way thank you.

      My Chinese import headdeck has programmable button inputs, and I managed to get it working without removing the termination resistor. I needed to put one of the wires from the steering wheel to ground, and the other to one of the SW wires from the head deck, then programmed the 5k resistance to "none" button, and all works perfectly!

    I got one for you ,the 2017 Dodge charger / Challenger steering wheel I've got it apart in front of me 😖
    Does canbus make a difference or can I just wire it up may I add it's a bit of a project as this is going on to a stratus /eclipse ,which is funny because your exact steering wheel is why I'm doing this there's a writeup on club3g about upgrading well I figured I stead of the steering wheel you have Ior outlander , would use this one a 2015-17 dodge wheel out of a challenger I know this is doable just not sure where to start looking or who to ask to further my education 😖,thank you for you time brother 😊I'm going to watch you video for the 20th time and continue attempting to apply it to mine thank you again 😊

      If you have an aftermarket unit but steering is canbus (it’s unusual) you can just use the wire to connect to the unit and on the steering wheel side just rewire buttons to resistors and connect to the wire that’s going to the headunit

      You know what I was thinking the exact same thing ,but beings the wheel is out of a canbus vehicle I wasn't aware that we could just wire them the same way oh wait ok ok,I see what you are saying ok I misunderstood you ,you know what that is worth a try for sure thank you ,I did get everything disassembled before and it is a quite bit different then mine or your wheel I think, I wish I could show you 🤔 ... at least where I should solder at I wish I had someone to vet that , it looks more like a motherboard now then a circuit board. The unless you want to try and do a video on playing around with that wheel haha mabey hooking it up to your vehicle I think youd see what I mean I'm going to try what you said tho I'll keep you updated thank you for the feedback max I really do appreciate it !!! Watch it be this simple haha as someone who tinkers with stuff too it's in my experience that once the project is over and your looking back, it's usually us that makes it more difficult then what it was haha thanks again !!!

      First check if your head unit has a learning function, sometime they have learning function and you can just learn buttons digitally on head unit without any external adapters. If it doesn’t then you can use 2k resistors to probe out what happens, so power the head unit and then short the 2k resistor between the control and ground, see what function it triggers, then 4K then 6k ect (just 2k resistors in series) unfortunately there’s no website that has all this info, you can try contacting the manufacturer and asking them

    Found your vid and curious: the Sony (MEX 5300) has programable functions. Like mapping a game console controller on PC. You select the function on the head unit and it prompts you to press a button on the steering wheel. Is it safe to assume I would just need to directly wire my steering wheel leads to a 3.5mm Jack and the Sony head unit would map based on resistance and as such no need to solder resistors?
