    As a young 3D artist who's spent the last several years learning to make realtime assets for UE4 current gen at college, I'm clearly not the authority for all things tech but this is fucking insane to me, from the absolutely bananas poly count to the global illumination, to the contextual animation, to the integration of workflows from programs like Niagara, I'm floored, absolutely cannot wait to work with this. I want it right goddamn now. Some of my profs said this kinda stuff was right around the corner but too many still thought of this stuff as pipe dreams and wanted us to dedicate fully to the traditional ways of asset creation, and while I'm glad I learned the old fashioned way this looks like many of the nitpicky bitch steps that stand in the way between art creation/ idea and realtime usage have been removed.
    If ur a gamer purely and don't care at least you can take solace in knowing some of the steps that makes games take as long as they do to make are gone and production should possibly be quicker next gen, possibly, still gotta know the downsides.
    Personally, I have not felt an ounce of next gen hype until right now.

      @Aidan S Yeah it looked a little like jelly. But making fluid simulations is a lengthy process of constantly readjusting values. That would be less the engine's fault and more the person who made it.

  • @JoshMarshain

    The use of crazy high resolution scans directly into the engine is also bananas, really wanna see if the process there is as easy as they seem to claim, the thought of abandoning all the optimization techniques I spent the last 4 years learning for rocks alone seems too good to be true, what about high res scans of people? How well do these higher polycount models play with rigging and animation? What about the pipeline for UE5 on a show rather than a game? I HAVE A THOUSAND QUESTIONS, what are the limits here???

      I mean it was just a demo cuz I was looking at that too like the environment is incredible but the character model was real
      current- gen looking and the face was real PS3 looking but like I said it's a demo I'm sure some big AAA company would push this engine to the limit and plus once u scan that face-scan on to the model I bet it looks stupid dope

    • @DidierSurka

      I'd say don't worry about it for now. There won't be a practical way to add those almost raw assets on disk. There's still ways to create LODs and bake automatically from scan data and we're not worried about those either.

    • @sagii86
      @sagii86 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's exactly why it's a game changer. You can already see the effect on indie developers using quixel megascans in 4.25. Check out their projects on artstation, it's available for PC for a while now, the fact that it's available for consoles is I guess what's excit everyone.

  • @tiernanstevens117
    @tiernanstevens117 4 ปีที่แล้ว +62

    Being able to just export a Zbrush sculpt eliminates you needing to retopo a model and bake out maps (mainly normal for detail) and just.. Wow. People don't understand that you can just sculpt something and plop it in with far less hassle and strain on the game engine. I promise you that it has never been that easy. This might just look like "Eh this looks cool?" to the average consumer and that's fine. But this makes having that level of detail- SO much easier. This could cut down workload so much because of how often you have to work backwards.

    • @unchpunchem8947
      @unchpunchem8947 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Seriously. And being able to use the same assets anywhere, not having to have different polycounts for foreground/background models is such a game changer. This makes the development process so much insanely easier. And with being able to import that much detail, you could get way up close to something and not have it look rough. My mind is blown

    • @pottuvoi2
      @pottuvoi2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes.
      Ability to 'bypass' manual labor involved in making LoD and baking parts will be huge. (Although I really hope it is still possible to bake a lot of information like curvature to the highres mesh.)
      It will be interesting to see how the import to UE and generation of continuous/automatic LoD works with Nanite and how textures are handled. (Will there be UVW or will it be more like PTEX or voxel structure with each voxel face projecting cubemaps invard..)

    This looks amazing, but let's remember folks: tech demos just show you what's POSSIBLE, but it's up to the developers to actually use the engine to its fullest.

      You also know that Sony developers tend to take the tech even further than what's possible on these tech demos. GoW, HzD, Spider-man and Death Stranding were just a few Sony developed/financed games that took way old tech to it's limit and beyond. No doubt they will take future games even further than what was shown by UE5.

All I was saying is this made me excited, not that the 1st game will look like this! It’s ok to get excited.

    For Top Left Guy: The way UE4's Nanite works is it uses the new graphics shaders introduced recently by the new graphics drivers, called Mesh Shaders, and these Mesh Shaders incentivize you to break your mesh into multiple smaller sub-meshes, the reason why this is important for Nanite is because Nanite is Virtual Geometry, a.k.a Geometry data that is live-streamed from the SSD when it is in view. Therefore by logical deduction if you then break every one of your meshes into super small sub-meshes then you could theoreticlly stream in only the necessary sub-meshes that fit onto screen, a.k.a dynamic LODs, and since Nanite only cares about filling the screen and not wasting extra resources that means that the system scales with Resolution only, meaning if you run this on a 360p display, you could even run it on a switch(Though Mesh Shader support is a requirement).

      use Reshade Graphics enhancer mod for all your games and use the sharpening shader, if properly calibrated it can make sharpness of the image feel like 1440p from 1080 or feel like 4K when its only 1440 but it doesnt drag down the frame rate. there are a bunch of other graphics shaders too you can add to make the image look better than Native 4K. on VR though just stick with Color and Sharpening shaders mostly because the other enhancements will drag down the framerate.

    You all have no clue 🤣 it's going to be longer than you think before games on PC get like this. Devs are not going to be optimizing games for SSDs on PC for a while due to the fact that not everyone owns SSDs, but I'm routing for you that it happens sooner than later. It's the PS5s SSD and custom I/O that's allowing them to derender everything the player isn't looking at to allow this fidelity, as said by the Epic CEO. I would say a year minimum after next gen releases before Devs start doing so. Also, there is still nothing comparable to the PS5 SSD coming in the near future, so it will still be lagging behind the PS5. Not to mention that PCs can not have custom I/O chips for bottleneck, which is why the PS5 SSD performs the way it does, and why Epic was able to make this tech demo so easily, and effortlessly.

I personally think Hellblade 2 will have a beautiful overall look to it and great art direction. I don't think it's a game that will be top tier that will blow you away compared to some other games. Horizon Zero Dawn 2 will probably be the first game where you go........holy shit. Just my prediction, though.

      Most likely not as great on Series X. What allows the Nanite tech to work is the ability to stream colossal amounts of polygonal data from storage in real-time. This is where the PS5 shines, with over double the I/O throughput. Series X will either suffer from reduced detail, or visible artefacts as the data can't stream in quick enough, probably a mix of the two. Series X will probably make better use of Lumen and better global illumination, but it will be very subtle at these levels. Not looking to start an argument of which console is better, but there's a reason Epic chose PS5 to showcase this. Graphics fidelity is more than just the TFlops under the hood.
