Honestly I like looking at the beginner one the most. It's not too dark, it's not an optical illusion in your face, and the design is just elegant and clean.

But I agree, first one is the best.

It's a crisp piece of work. Sam's board is great, John's is masterful (and I'm a fan of Mondrian) but Jordan's board is elegant.

I agree, been making cutting boards for about 12 years, made those fancy optical illusion ones and I've come to find out people like them but they dont seem to sell very well. the easy cleaner looking cutting boards go fast, and people want those ones more.

So what happens when you flip it to use the back side?
      Cutting boards have 2 sides!
Personally I just want performance from my board, and all of these land on low performance.
A cutting board has 1 job. To protect your knife. Here is a list of things cutting boards shouldn't be made from. Stone, glass, metal, hardwoods, or bamboo (technically a grass!)
Here is a list of professionally accepted materials. Rubber, some soft plastics, and some softwood (hinoki, larch, spruce, yellow pine, etc)
The goal when selecting a wood for a cutting board is a soft wood that isn't too soft and strong antimicrobial properties.

To have in my kitchen to actually use and see on a regular basis? The "beginner" one. Very simple but beautiful use of the colors and contrast.
The other two would be nice novelty pieces to pull out when there's company for something overly fancy (which, honestly, we never do), but that would be it.

    • @brandonhoffman4712
      @brandonhoffman4712 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

I'll agree it's a commonly seen board type of superior construction.
But I really think people need to move away from hardwoods for cutting boards.
Hinoki, spruce, larch, or yellow pine are about all I will accept anymore. A wood needs to earn its place in my home by passing my bar exam! And it better test out between 500-900 on the janka scale while having strong antimicrobial properties.
A cutting board isn't something you cook up in a ez bake oven with shop scraps.
These are more like fancy serving boards. To which I'll take the mitered one because it's easy to carry, weighs less, and reminds me of surfing which also fits a beach theme which suits me.

Mamma would be chopping parsley about 9 days earlier than waiting for the other two to finish their fancy layouts. John yours is immense in all ways and perfect for the Zen cook that has to contemplate the very nature of infinity as they chop. Jordan's is good for a serving board. Hardwood makes for inferior cutting boards that hurt knife edges.
I'd rather buy a yoshihiro hinoki board 1.25" thick version, or the larchwood endgrain boards. Much better on the knives and both have strong antimicrobial properties.
That being said the best cutting board in existence might be the Parker Asahi boards. A proprietary mix of rubber and sawdust! Fully self healing, sandable, they even have antimicrobial ones, and all are gentle on the knife.
Another goo brand, but mostly for slicing is the Hasegawa cutting boards. They are a plastic cutting board with pure rubber surface and wooden core for lightness. But the kind of grab the blade, so are best for slicing.
If your ever in a sushi joint and look across to the cutting boards. It's pretty much always a Hasegawa, Asahi, or Hinoki wood cutting board you will see.

I am Not a woodworker, but, back in the day, we had wood shop in school. Even I built a level 2 cutting board with 5 types of wood in that class. It turned out great, I gave it to my mom for mothers day. I'm 53 now. When my mom died 4 years ago, I got it back, and, I still use it. If you use them, they will last. Can't leave them laying around getting dried out.

My vote is Sam for the win. Nice job from everyone, but that walnut displays technique, experience, and has a lot of natural character. Great job to all!

Sam took the win on this one. The medium chopping board was way better than the expert one. The inlay for liquid when chopping fruit or meat.

Great job you guys. Jordan, I like that you took a little extra time explaining. Sam, your board is my favorite, I just wish you’d gone into just a little bit more detail. For example, you mentioned ensuring the grain direction for a better glue-up, but didn’t explain what to look for. The other part that was missing was exactly the glue up progress to get that pattern. Maybe I missed that. Love that you guys have so much fun building.
