There's something I find ironic about Colors and Generations. See, the console version of Colors didn't really have any characters other than Sonic, Tails, Wisps, Eggman, and his assistants. But in the portable version, nearly all of Sonic's friends are at the park and Sonic can talk to them via missions. But then the console/PC version of Generations has nearly all of Sonic's friends, while the portable version didn't have any characters other than Sonic, Tails, Eggman, and the Time Eater. Weird, huh?
I was so hyped for Sonic Generations, that I couldn't wait to play it. It was actually THE reason I got an Xbox 360. I got it for PC but because of my computer, it was the first ever game that made me dizzy. The audio and music played perfectly, the cutscenes were so so, but the game itself was very slow, so imagine playing a very slow framerate game when the audio and music is great. Oddly enough, even with the worst FPS I've ever seen, I still enjoyed the Hell out of it. XD
filipeflower the game was originally going to be on Wii DS PSP and PS3. They were still negotiating a Xbox 360 version. But for some reason the PSP version was scrapped and was converted to the 3DS. Ideas from the DS port were brought over to the 3DS version. The Wii version was presumably continued work as an original game (possibly sonic colours) and work continued on the PS3 and Xbox 360 as normal. All of this happened late in development which maybe why generations and colours do sometimes get described as incomplete or rushed
I think the reason Classic Sonic was given the homing Attack was because he unlocks it at emerald Coast from Sonic Adventure and in that game sonic had both the homing attack and the spindash. That's the only reason I think they would for.
Classic Sonic doesn't unlock anything in any level from Sonic Adventure because Classic Sonic isn't in Sonic Adventure. Sonic Adventure is the first "modern Sonic" game (weird to say considering the gap of time between Sonic Adventure's release and now is longer than the gap of time between Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic Adventure's releases), which is why homing attack for Classic Sonic still makes no fucking sense.
no what he is saying is the homing attack originated from sonic adventure and classic sonic unlocks the homing attack after emerald coast which is from sonic adventure so thats probaly why classic sonic gets the homing attack in the 3ds version.
I love Generations 3DS. I like the level design, it controls really well(I love Rush 1 & this plays like that), although I would've wanted more handheld stages as well. And why does Classic Sonic get the homing attack again?
Sonic Generations is hands-down my favorite Sonic game since Sonic 2 and now that I've been watching your "vs. Sonic" series, I'm discovering there is so much more to do with it! You f*****g rock! Subscribed!
Even after 3 years, I still find myself going back to Colors and Generations again and again. I would say the same for the Adventure series, but I'd be lying.
Sonic Warrior I do go back to SA1 more than SA2 (it is my favorite 3D Sonic game after Generations and Colors), but it's definitely aged in some areas. While Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles did an excellent job of emulating the playstyles of their Genesis counterparts in a 3D world, but it's the other characters, as well as a few technical problems (like the wonky camera and occasional glitches that lead to unfair deaths at times) that keep me from enjoying SA1 to its entirety. And you already know why I don't go back to SA2 very much. With Colors and Generations, while they're not perfect, I enjoyed those games from beginning to end. With each playthrough I complete, I had just as much fun as the last.
For everyone asking about the DS version of Sonic Colors and when he'll get to it, wait until he reviews the Sonic Rush games, which will not happen until after a few years pass.
We need more Sonic games like Sonic Generations. Can be short, but is consistently a blast to play from start to finish, as opposed to long, drawn out and consistently mediocre or worse ala Rise of Lyric or '06
Well i can't say that is true for all titles but for sonic needs top notch gameplay before story, graphics, ect. Now i have to come to terms with is the boost formula, I think it is the best style of gameplay imo. I love adventures style, but the boost gives more of a thrill ride.
***** Quality above all else. Was Generations worth $60? No, probably not. But I got it on sale on Steam and it's the best Sonic title since S3K, better than everything before it and after.
I don't mind classic sonic in Generations but the level design of modern sonic's stages are just, ugh, it's like they expect you to know what the stage looks like.

Although I agree with you even if I liked the 3ds version, I have to chime in on rival battles and a bit more. They used the system of Sonic Rivals, instead of SA2. Rivals had achieved using the race system, and they upgraded it a bit to optimize rival battles for the 3ds. That's the rival battle system overall. The recreated bosses were upgraded a bit from the original. The final boss references Sonic Heroes and 2 in a way. They let you switch between gameplay of Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic, giving you the hardest fight in the Game. Along with that, the Rush system worked for Modern Sonic when you're good enough. The infinite boosts, the added ring energy system from Sonic Unleashed, it all references the entire series. The 3ds succeeds at referencing more games than console version.

Definitely agree with you on all points of this, especially the 3DS version of Generations. I actually bought that version before Sonic Generations on the PS3, and though it was fun the first time through, it is considerably plain compared to its HD counterpart. To the handhelds credit though, I do think Tropical Resort is one of the best designed levels Dimps has ever made. I find myself playing that level more than the others on the rare occasions I go back to the 3DS version.
You know...generations was supposed to get a wii release... get this, it was cancelled do to graphics on the wii not being high quality enough to fit the game. i feel like i'm really missing out here. 3ds version was fun, but i can't get the better version.
SlashBeast101 It's a different version. Some people don't own the 360 or PS3 and own the PS2 and or Wii. Says the guy who doesn't own any of those consoles though I can afford them. I would own them if I could. *sigh*
5:17 Johnny, I know a lot of people complained about this, but the Homing Attack for Classic Sonic is also in the console version by collecting all Red Star Rings in Classic Planet Wisp, but it's completely optional.
Why do everybody think machine labyrinth was the best stage of sonic rush adventure? It was just another version of chemical plant zone. Other zones were really better! And leaf storm is just green hill, come on! The last zone would be better since the gravity and the missile challenged you to be fast. Of course, instead of only making modern sonic be able to boost jump and do a homing attack, the R button thing should be there since it is the best mechanic the game had. I always use it to speedrun. Or if we look at it in a completly different way, we could keep the sonic rush style but remove classic with adventure style of gameplay. I'm serious! It's a shame SEGA didn't even represent their best gameplay style for generations. We already got classic for the console version. However, This idea wouldn't work forthe idea of representing the handheld games. You know what? Doesn't matter! The 2d modern style could take care of it, and for the adventure style, just put the same level layouts mechanics that made the level stand out and it would be perfect. I think the idea of introducing adventure sonic would make the combination of the console and handheld a true anniversary, I think it would work better rather than put the same exact style of gameplay that the console version.
Game gear era 1. Green Hill 2. Aqua Lake 3. Sunset Park Advance era 1. Casino Paradise 2. Music Plant 3. Twinkle Snow Ds era 1. Water Palace 2. Machine Labyrinth 3. Starlight Carnival
How I would view a more handheld oriented stage selection for Generations 3DS: GG/Master System: 1. Green Hill 2. Sky High? (never got past Underground zone, so I don't know the other levels too well). 3. Sunset Park Advance: 1. Egg Rocket/Cosmic Angel 2. Music Plant 3. Chaos Angel Rush: 1. Water Palace 2. Machine Labyrinth 3. Starlight Carnival Rivals: 1. Knuckles 2. Gemerl 3. Blaze Bosses: 1. Sonic Triple Trouble Final Boss 2. Egg Saucer (Sky Canyon Boss) 3. Nega Mother Wisp Time Eater
One word of warning if you get the PC version of Generations: Get a USB 360 controller. The PC controls, while not unplayable, are pretty awkward to get used to. Especially since all the prompts give 360 buttons.
Sonic Generations 3DS stages should look more like this. Classic Era: -Green Hill Zone (Sonic The Hedgehog) -Sky High Zone (Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Game Gear) -Sunset Park Zone (Sonic Triple Trouble) Rival: Knuckles or Metal Sonic Boss: Egg Chamber Advance Era: -Ice Mountain Zone (Sonic Advance) -Music Plant Zone (Sonic Advance 2) -Cyber Track Zone(Sonic Advance 3) Rival: Gemerl from Sonic Advance 3 Boss: True Area 53 Modern Era: -Water Palace Zone (Sonic Rush) -Pirates Island Zone (Sonic Rush Adventure) -Colosseum Highway Zone/Windy Hill Zone (Sonic Rivals/Sonic Lost World) Rival: Blaze/Whisker and Johnny Boss:Egg King (Sonic Rush)
I'm definitely excited to roam around the open world and won't be surprised if it takes me a while to get started on the missions due to how awesome roaming around will be lol.
I know that feel. One day, in early 2010-ish(?) I downloaded Sonic 2 from the Wii Shop Channel, and since then, I became a full-on Sonic fan. And then Sonic 4 was announced. The same thing happened when I decided to watch the Toy Story movies again, loving those more than I did before. Then Toy Story 3 was announced.
I don't see how praising the Unleashed Project is redundant. The Unleashed Project is the result of volunteers. I praise it because it allows people to experience a completely different game, or wanted a better Sonic Unleashed experience. Of course it seems redundant if you already own it, but you can't assume everybody else does. You can either download it, or not, but that doesn't mean I can't compliment it. Don't like it? Don't mod your copy of Sonic Generations.
Sonic Generations on PC was the reason why I went and ordered parts and built on and I've never been happier with a decision related to gaming. Was pretty envious of the mod support and the doubled frame rate.
What sucks is that the special stages prove it can be done in 3d on the 3ds....why they bothered to scratch the game and just do a generic 2d sonic game perplexed me
I think it was because they thought it would be best for the handheld version of Sonic Generations should focus on the 2D gameplay of the handheld games in the series rather than a directly inferior version with no new or noticeable content. I don't know why they didn't use the handheld stages throughout the whole game though because it was a missed opportunity to show off the handheld games but oh well.
they should have romoved classic sonic and satisfy avventure fans with the adventure formula while keeping the rush gameplay and add hte R button thing.
Lord Baldur Jaleel White had a weird voice that sounded out of place for Sonic. So having Classic Sonic talk like Jaleel White would be very unfitting.
Now that Johnny has given us the Generations 3DS review, I can't wait to see what game review (non-Sonic related) will come next! =D Maybe the Uncharted 3 review? (And oh snap, I wonder when we'll get a Sonic Rush/Sonic Rush Adventure review. We gotta see Johnny review the funky music games!)
***** I know I usually don't lose my cool since this is TH-cam after all and people are going to be disrespectful but there are just some things I can't take sitting down.
Classic sonic can get the homing attack in the HD versions of Generations. If you get all the red rings in Planet Wisp, you can get the homing attack. I know, it's optional but still, it's there anyways.
+William White Have to disagree Mr. White. While I do love Unleashed (love the speed) I think the werehog sections are more bland than the design, which I find fun every time. I have to say I like Colors better. But Generations curb stomps both of them. Great gameplay, 75% 3D when its allowed, and a great story. I love Generations. I actually got it a couple of weeks ago just so I could play it 4-5 years after the demo.
happy 30th birthday sonic the hedgehog!!! :3 these and the adventure games/unleashed/to an extent heroes were the peak of love to me in 3d sonic and hope sonic 2022 focuses on being fun like them.
oh I'm sorry,I can't have a different opinion to you? The game was a mess, the level designs where just long stretches of nothing happening, megaman type block platforming and a real lack of speed.the game is overrated and loved because Sonic was the only playable character.Sonic heroes was better than this crap game
Y'know, since the 3DS displays 3D graphics that go IN to the screen more often than pop OUT of it, having the 3D on allows you to save your eyes by not focusing as close as with the 3D off.
There was a short game war where Somecallmejohnny and ClementJ642 fought to see who could get the best score on the 30-second trial for Classic City Escape. If you look at the video responses in the original Sonic Generations review on this channel, you'll see what I'm talking about.
I love Sonic Colors but I never played Generations(but I would like to one day), it was the game that got me back into playing those games again, but Sonic Advance 2 will always be my favorite Sonic game I ever played.
Johnny, do you think you could make a quick video talking about your 3DS recording device? Like, talking about your impressions, how easy it is to use, how well it works. I've been thinking of getting one, but I'm a little skeptical, so you might help out.
I actually didn't know the console version of Sonic Generations had new stages even for the classic stages. I thought kinda the point of Sonic Generations was to replay stages from older Sonic games remastered in HD, in both a classic and modern gameplay style. Still cool that it has new stages though, I guess it makes it more exciting since you haven't seen them before.
You get what I mean. Though I'd still consider them different stages if the layout is different, but still having the exact same theme as the ones they're based on.
First of all, I love your stuff Second of all, this was really good. But now I'm curious. Do you have a favorite level from Generations 3DS? Mine would have to be Water Palace, especially Act 2. It's really fast paced, has multiple paths which encourages speed (because which path you take at the fork usually depends on how fast you're going), and I just have so much fun blasting through it.
There's something I find ironic about Colors and Generations. See, the console version of Colors didn't really have any characters other than Sonic, Tails, Wisps, Eggman, and his assistants. SlashBeast101 It's a different version. Some people don't own the 360 or PS3 and own the PS2 and or Wii. Says the guy who doesn't own any of those consoles though I can afford them. I would own them if I could. *sigh*
I totally forgot I had this video saved in my Favorites list. Good to know Johnny showed his review of Sonic Generations for the Nintendo 3DS.
I actually kind of enjoyed the 3ds version of sonic gens, but it is definitely not an amazing game.
5:17
Johnny, I know a lot of people complained about this, but the Homing Attack for Classic Sonic is also in the console version by collecting all Red Star Rings in Classic Planet Wisp, but it's completely optional.
Generations 3DS Done Right:
Game Gear Era

2.
3.
Gameboy Advance Era
1.
2.
3.
DS Era
1.
2. Machine Labyrinth
3.
Bosses

3.
Put In Your Own!
For the DS era:
Leaf Storm/Dead Line
Machine Labyrinth
Asteroid Coaster
Rivals:
1.) Knuckles
2.) Emerl
3.) Blaze
Game Gear Era:
Bridge Zone
Sunset Park Zone
Mecha Green Hill Zone
Game gear era
1. Green Hill
2. Aqua Lake
3. Sunset Park
Advance era
1. Casino Paradise
2. Music Plant
3. Twinkle Snow
Ds era
1. Water Palace
2. Machine Labyrinth
3. Starlight Carnival
great review as always john keep up the good work
What about the ds version of Sonic Colors
How I would view a more handheld oriented stage selection for Generations 3DS:
GG/Master System:
1. Green Hill
2. Sky High? (never got past Underground zone, so I don't know the other levels too well).
3. Sunset Park
Advance:
1. Egg Rocket/Cosmic Angel
2. Music Plant
3. Chaos Angel
Rush:
1. Water Palace
2. Machine Labyrinth
3. Starlight Carnival
Rivals:
1. Knuckles
2. Gemerl
3. Blaze
Bosses:
1. Sonic Triple Trouble Final Boss
2. Egg Saucer (Sky Canyon Boss)
3. Nega Mother Wisp
Time Eater
One word of warning if you get the PC version of Generations:
Get a USB 360 controller. The PC controls, while not unplayable, are pretty awkward to get used to. Especially since all the prompts give 360 buttons.
Wow man, you speak and don't take breaths, You just say everything without stopping
Sonic Generations 3DS stages should look more like this.
Classic Era:
-Green Hill Zone (Sonic The Hedgehog)
-Sky High Zone (Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Game Gear)
-Sunset Park Zone (Sonic Triple Trouble)
Rival: Knuckles or Metal Sonic
Boss: Egg Chamber
Advance Era:
-Ice Mountain Zone (Sonic Advance)
-Music Plant Zone (Sonic Advance 2)
-Cyber Track Zone(Sonic Advance 3)
Rival: Gemerl from Sonic Advance 3
Boss: True Area 53
Modern Era:
-Water Palace Zone (Sonic Rush)
-Pirates Island Zone (Sonic Rush Adventure)
-Colosseum Highway Zone/Windy Hill Zone (Sonic Rivals/Sonic Lost World)
Rival: Blaze/Whisker and Johnny
Boss:Egg King (Sonic Rush)
Good list but sonic 2 should be casino night
sonic generations is before lost world
Sonic Generations came out before Lost World, so take out Windy Hill.
Generations came out BEFORE lost world so take windy hill out.
I'm definitely excited to roam around the open world and won't be surprised if it takes me a while to get started on the missions due to how awesome roaming around will be lol.
Then Lost world happened...
It's not a bad game
@Boi nope
9:10 - Minecraft.
Literally two usernames with "shadic" down here. Fucking wow.
lol
Nice review! I am really curious on what will be the next sonic game!
Are you going to do Now and Then for Heroes, Adventure 2, Black Knight, etc.
Alight I'll tell u I wanted to know what they thought of storm in xmen dofp
Alejandro333777 Thanks :D, whats your opinion on Sonic Generations.
Torrence Sampson I liked it why? It felt nostalgic and I have it and replay levels from time to time
Alejandro333777 I feel ya I do the same. In my opinion I think this is probably my 2nd or 3rd Sonic game after Unleashed or Shadow.
I only like unleashed for morning stages
I can't wait for Johnny's review of Sonic Lost World and see his reaction when he sees Spin Dash is back for 3D Sonic levels :D
11:45 Welcome to freaking Sonic Boom.
Trololololol
+TheBaconGamer it was sonic lost world not boom
+chaosjems 950 *and lost world
+TheBaconGamer Sonic Boom isn't part of the main Sonic series
"Next MAINSTREAM sonic game"
Don't worry that's in the past now we got sonic mania and project sonic 2017 (not generations 2)
Sonic Generations on PC was the reason why I went and ordered parts and built on and I've never been happier with a decision related to gaming. Was pretty envious of the mod support and the doubled frame rate.
What sucks is that the special stages prove it can be done in 3d on the 3ds....why they bothered to scratch the game and just do a generic 2d sonic game perplexed me
probably because they where playing it safe just like they did on the console versions.
I think it was because they thought it would be best for the handheld version of Sonic Generations should focus on the 2D gameplay of the handheld games in the series rather than a directly inferior version with no new or noticeable content. I don't know why they didn't use the handheld stages throughout the whole game though because it was a missed opportunity to show off the handheld games but oh well.
they should have romoved classic sonic and satisfy avventure fans with the adventure formula while keeping the rush gameplay and add hte R button thing.
why does generations 3d not have a boss representing the handheld era?
1 BIG QUISTION... how can classic tails talk but not classic sonic? I don't remember classic tails ever speaking in the old days.
No tears, only dreams now.
Mike Anthony If I recall, they wanted to get Jaleel White to voice classic Sonic, but they didn't voice him due to time restraints.
Lord Baldur I think that would be worse because if I recall Jaleel White voiced Sonic in the SAT AM cartoon.
Mike Anthony
So?
Lord Baldur Jaleel White had a weird voice that sounded out of place for Sonic. So having Classic Sonic talk like Jaleel White would be very unfitting.
Now that Johnny has given us the Generations 3DS review, I can't wait to see what game review (non-Sonic related) will come next! =D Maybe the Uncharted 3 review? (And oh snap, I wonder when we'll get a Sonic Rush/Sonic Rush Adventure review. We gotta see Johnny review the funky music games!)
Too bad Lost World was a step backward in terms of a Sonic game.
***** Did you even see what awesomeguy2009 said to me?? He said he would find me and kill me plus he outright insulted me!! How else should I react??
***** I know I usually don't lose my cool since this is TH-cam after all and people are going to be disrespectful but there are just some things I can't take sitting down.
***** Well by that logic I don't have to show that jackass any decency then.
***** Well he pissed me off, I told him to fuck off, the end.
***** Yup peace
Classic sonic can get the homing attack in the HD versions of Generations. If you get all the red rings in Planet Wisp, you can get the homing attack. I know, it's optional but still, it's there anyways.
DS copy of Sonic Colors
Maybe, but that will be up for him to decide. Can't wait for the BSC playthrough and Johnny's review.
The level design in Sonic Colors has indeed become bland Sonic Unleashed and Generations are better games
+Xcalibur64 The levels are beautiful in Sonic Colors but not as fun as Generations and Unleashed
+Xcalibur64 It's good you respect my opinion so I'll respect yours
+William White Have to disagree Mr. White. While I do love Unleashed (love the speed) I think the werehog sections are more bland than the design, which I find fun every time. I have to say I like Colors better. But Generations curb stomps both of them. Great gameplay, 75% 3D when its allowed, and a great story. I love Generations. I actually got it a couple of weeks ago just so I could play it 4-5 years after the demo.
I should have been more specific I meant to say the daytime stages are better than Sonic Colors
+William White Oh. Well, I consider them even. Maybe Unleashed a bit more
happy 30th birthday sonic the hedgehog!!! :3
these and the adventure games/unleashed/to an extent heroes were the peak of love to me in 3d sonic and hope sonic 2022 focuses on being fun like them.
reveiw ninja gaiden
4:12 actually the special stages in sonic generations are entirely 3d
Kill me if ya want to, but Colors is better than Generations for me
10/10 Colors
9.5/10 Generations
There, i said it. I can die in peace now.
Why does everyone feel the need to say on thing is better?
In my case, human curiosity.
I always wonder what others will react to what i say.
Hmmm
Colors sucks!!!
Solaris642 Opinions brother, opinions.
Generations is still a fantastic game I love it! Colours is still shit
Sonicrushtoast colors was the game that brought many sonic fans back to the franchise, the game was awesome
oh I'm sorry,I can't have a different opinion to you? The game was a mess, the level designs where just long stretches of nothing happening, megaman type block platforming and a real lack of speed.the game is overrated and loved because Sonic was the only playable character.Sonic heroes was better than this crap game
you can I am jiust saying that I disagree with u
i strongly disagree with you.
I strongly don't care :D
I look forward to your eventual review of Sonic Lost World.
7:00 But John... What about Sonic 3D Blast on the Genesis? What about *those* special stages?
I clicked on the annotation at 6:30.
...what has been heard cannot be unheard.
Y'know, since the 3DS displays 3D graphics that go IN to the screen more often than pop OUT of it, having the 3D on allows you to save your eyes by not focusing as close as with the 3D off.
Fantastic review man!
I dont think the werehog is that bad. hes really powerful and i can tell that they put lots of work into his artistic fighting style
I still love Colors and Generations after 3 years
There was a short game war where Somecallmejohnny and ClementJ642 fought to see who could get the best score on the 30-second trial for Classic City Escape.
You're awesome Johnny. Keep up the good work!
I completely agree. Generations is just freaking awesome in general. Also, OMG the Unleashed Project looks amazing! If only I had the game on PC D:
Johnny, do you think you could make a quick video talking about your 3DS recording device? Like, talking about your impressions, how easy it is to use, how well it works. I've been thinking of getting one, but I'm a little skeptical, so you might help out.
LOL I keep watching your videos and I just realized this was posted today
11:41
Oh Johnny, if only you knew then what you knew now about the next couple of Sonic games.
Cool to see Johnny likes the PC version of the game and the Unleashed mod. didn't know he did any PC gaming
+Natok the Dragon [PresStarToPlay] no new stages
They have different level design from the originals, so they're technically new stages in a way.
Still old stages from Sonic's past. The levels are old and I think you mean the level designs are new.
You get what I mean. Though I'd still consider them different stages if the layout is different, but still having the exact same theme as the ones they're based on.
Since john has a capture device does that mean his next sonic marathon will be handheld
Well, this City Escape Theme fragment was a part of "Sonic Generations" ending theme, which starts in 09:16.
This review came out three years ago? Holy hell.
Finally I have been waiting for this
Went back to playing this awhile back and got 100% completion and it felt so good and yet I STILL play this, that says a lot about this game
Johnny, you forgot to mention that Classic Sonic's Homing Attack is also in the console version.
Did anyone else notice that classic tropical resort has the same layout as the DS version of Sonic Colors?
Megapig9001 same with the water area I beleive from rush, whatever that area's name was
