This fictional movie tells the story of Saketh Ram (Kamal Haasan). His wife Aparna (Rani Mukherji) is molested and killed during riots in Calcutta. He is convinced that Mahatma Gandhi (Naseeruddin Shah) is responsible for all the problems happening in the country and sets out to kill him. The rest of the movie shows whether he succeeded in his mission or not.

I was the British chief of police in this movie. @ 33:04 / Some film agent went to Mamallapuram, the foreigner hang-out near Madras, saw me - and decided I was their man for the movie. I got paid a couple of thousand Rupees for the day - not much at all, but they paid for my hotel and transport, and fed me on site, so it was OK, I only did it for the experience anyway - not the money. Kamal Hasan treated me well, I sat and ate with his family - I was also in one of his other movies a couple of years later, called "Abhey". As for the scene I did it in one take - I messed up my lines a bit, but he seemed to be happy. What I do notice is my uniform hat! It was way too small for me! I looked so stupid. My 6 month 1999 trip was very eventful, and not just for this movie, but months later I went up to Puri and then the place got smashed by a huge storm that killed 10,000 people, a war broke out with Pakistan, I was in Calcutta, was in a TV drama and then the city got flooded (worst flooding since 1978) - the hotel I was in became an island! And then I ended up getting stranded on a real island, a remote jungle place in the Andamans. The entire trip was freakin crazy. Loved it though .......... THANK U INDIA. ---

For lot many Kamal films even now I couldn't able to understand some frames and scenes he is really genius, even when I got many opportunities to snap a pic with actors I never showed interest but whenever I see Kamal I keen to take a picture with him, waiting for the day

The biggest problem of this movie is the live recording (even by non thamizh actors) and not adding subs for many important dialogues.
Hindi version didn't have live recording and it was only hindi for 90% of the dialogues.

Awesome movie. I watched this movie because most of the people were telling that they didn't understand this movie. Tbh, I also didn't understand the movie. But after watching the movie again by carefully observing the dialogues, I completely understood the movie. Movies like Hey Ram, Katradhu Tamil, Aayirathil Oruvan, Virumandi, Anbe Sivam, Vishwaroopam and Vada Chennai will be understood easily by the audience if they follow and carefully observe the dialogues of the film. Nowadays, people want masala movies without any story. If people say that they will watch cinema only for entertainment, then they are unfit for watching any type of cinema.

The gun Ram chose and uses is a Mauser c96, also called a broomhandle. It was one of the most accurate semi automatic handguns ever made by the germans during the Nazi regime. High ranking Nazi army officers used this gun and it symbolises fascism and Nazi ideology in this film. In the song where Ram is making love to his wife, she turns into a mauser c96 gun and he is making love to it. It shows how much he lusts for fascist ideology. 1:44:03 this is one of the most striking visual i have seen in Indian cinema. A fanatic man making love with Nazi facism. The film is highly eloquent of the chaotic political situations then and even now. Otherwise why an old dying man not allowed entry to reach hospital by the police who forces him and his team of doctor, etcto go literally underground!😢No humanity in approaching the public by the police is succinctly visualized.🎉
