Namma Gramam is an bilingual film written, directed and produced by actor-producer Mohan Sharma. It was simultaneously made in Malayalam and Tamil languages under the titles Gramam and Namma Gramam, respectively. It stars Nishan, Samvrutha, Nedumudi Venu, Sukumari Nair, Mohan Sharma, Y. G. Mahendraa, Nalini and Fathima Babu. The film, which was well received by critics upon its screening at various film festivals, won two National Film Awards and two Kerala State Film Awards among other laurels. Gramam is the first part of a trilogy on the Palakkad Brahmin community. Set between 1937 and 1947, the film is about a child widow and how she fights societal conventions. The second and third parts of the trilogy will be respectively set between 1947-1962 and 1962-1975. The film got released in Kerala on 10 August 2012. Sukumari received the National award for Best Supporting actress in 2010 for her sensitive portrayal.

One of the finest movies deserves awards. All the actors lived their respective roles. Independence of India is correlated with freedom from social evils and personal liberty are very nicely dipicted. Unlocking the cage of the parrot with joyful faces of the newly wedded young couple at the end is well designed climax.👍🌹

What an excellent and thought provoking movie; I just watched this 10-year old movie, superbly made and directed. The movie is a true reflection of the state of affairs in the then conservative and superstitious society of Iyer Brahmins and you don't get to see such movies nowadays. My too belated compliments to all those involved in the creation of this movie.

I hate the culture of removing hair, bindhi, and flowers. If the husband dies, then his wife becomes single again. So she has full rights to be the way she likes. I have no idea why many women follow this unaccetabe culture, but men are free to live the way they like after their wives die.

There was a similar Tamil movie with actress Shoba, major soundrajan. Were the father-in-law was against Brahmin customs to be done for young widow. He encouraged her to study and got her married in another caste. Movie was directed by k.balachander
