  • If you are working on Residential construction, you most likely are putting a DECK on the house or around the pool. This Revit Tip will show you best practices for creating a simple wooden deck using posts (columns), beams, a beam system, railing and stairs.

    I came upon that same problem with the locked beam system - you need to unlock the screen pin at the bottom right so that you can grab each beam individually!
    Great video!

      Thanks a ton Zvi! I hate when I'm trying to make a video and something in the program reaches over and says... "Not today." haha. It proves I'm human I guess... and I'm only trying to help people. =) Have a great day!

      I did a Railing Basics video on DEC 13, 2019 and Part 2 on FEB 24, 2020.... see if those help you with railings! Custom Stairs video is JULY 15, 2020. =)

    Excellent video. HUGE value. I really appreciate the fact that you do specific examples that I can mimic. That is where I learn the most as when I make mistakes I can keep rewinding until I can replicate what you are doing. Also I love your relaxed fun demeanor. Just as an aside and not that it matters for the purpose of this exercise but normally a deck is comprised of columns and then beams (so 4,6 or 8 feet apart for example) usually sitting on top of the columns and then Joists running 90 degrees to the beams and spaced 12, 16 or 24" apart. All this means is that you are missing one layer of the deck (the joists). Again probably a big don't care because you have taught me how to do the drawing of the framing. Thank you so much.

      Thanks a ton John. I appreciate your comment. I think we could all benefit from watching a video on someone building a actual deck - in real life and not on Revit!!! My professor in college told us all to go work in the construction industry BEFORE we got a job at an Architects office... we would learn a LOT there!

    I just found you, and was super intrigued by how you made dimensional lumber out of joists. I’m taking my first Revit class for certification this quarter, and that kind of thing is definitely not covered in the basics. Some of the steps that the book has us take, are not well explained, so it is hard to try to recreate the process on a different project. I’m looking forward to learning from your other videos.

      Hang in there. A lot of tutorials are not well documented... and I totally understand your frustration. But as you learn, things will get easier. And you will find creative ways to use the program! :)

    Great video! Definitely helped me out. I'm trying to create a simple railing with 4x4's with a 2x6 on top. The problem I'm having is the railing, the top, the 2x6 doesn't go to the end of the 4x4. your railing is perfect. If you could point me in the right direction that would be great. I'm a student and attempting to learn Revit. I was able to build the deck and create a 2x6 for the top and bottom railing it just doesn't go to the end of the 4x4 like I said.

    Hi, this video was very good. I have only used Arcitecual , but see that Strucrual has some benefits. But i get some problem gutting in the deck for a swimmingpool, and taking some decking on the side of the structure. Do you have any tips and tricks for this ? Thanks.

    • @miketaylor8211
      @miketaylor8211  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the Structural tools in Revit are very powerful and have some benefits. I've got a friend that can make just about anything out of a 'Structural Beam'. =)

      @@miketaylor8211 Could maybe he make a video on how to cut in the decking, and how to put some covering on the side of the decking ? Thank`s

    The beam system was not working because you didn't unlock the system. Unlocking the system will allow you to edit the individual elements in it.
