      Yes that lady embedded that girl with male tendencies while she was carrying her. Even the way she didn’t nurture her AFTER she was born is what I feel made her turn to being a lesbian. And Lord knowsss what happened to Ms. Glady’s in her upbringing. U know the ol’ folks motto back then was “see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil.” And they damn sure ain’t alive to tell nothing and the ones who “heard” some shit ain’t gon come forward; they don’t wanna be the one to unleash some shit they feel isn’t “important enough” anymore to talk about; not understanding, this lady backstory is apart of history and helped pave the way for the gay community…. I also feel these “husbands” of hers were a beard to keep from being stripped from everything she worked hard for ANDDD to ease into being a minister without being judged as harshly had she done in it in her regular male getup. IMO, Ms. Glady’s was very much so still attracted to women. Who’s to say her husbands weren’t gay and used her as a beard also?? Back then that was very much so common for the gay community.( even to this very day for these young teens still trying to find their place in the world as a gay man/woman.) Supporting each to appease judgmental families, friends, and the masses by being in a heterosexual relationship as a front to keep those quiet and happy while behind the scenes they were in a authentic relationship with their same sex to have some kind of peace, happiness and there is where they found that they could truly be themselves for those stolen moments away from the “real world.”

    The mother of Gladys should've given her to a loving & caring family who wanted a child. Her mother was pure evil. I don't understand how some people mistreat, neglect, and abuse their children just because they didn't want them. Then give them to someone who will care to love and raise the child.
    Children and babies know when they're not loved.

    You should do Billy Tipton too. He was a biological female who started dressing as a male since high school because she wasn’t allowed to join the all-male band in her high school and went in to living as a man until death and that’s when everyone found out he was a biological female.

    I believe Gladys started acting heterosexual because of a need to survive during the turbulent McCarthyism era and to keep all that she had worked so hard to achieve, point blank period! Whatever her reasoning, I don't blame her. I blame the social climate of that time and it still doesn't diminish her accomplishments. Thanks Ashley for another eye-opening video and I can't wait for the next one! 👏🏾♥️🥰👸🏾👍🏾

    It really is a horrible feeling when your brothers are cherished by your parents. While the same parents reject, scorn, (in some cases are physically abusive) and have hatred towards you.. Even comfortable enough to verbally express their hatred to you. That part reminded me of my mother & father.
    Eventually I had to accept that it was not acceptable and move away, permanently removing myself from a toxic and unhealthy environment..and toxic people.

    Sounds like her mindset was altered by trauma. For some people, once you experience trauma you don’t see things the same way as someone who has not been exposed to trauma. Example: people who have been abused may begin to act out in different ways whether they become withdrawn or promiscuous. It’s their subconscious coping with what happened to them.

    She wasn't transgendered, she was trying to win the approval and love of her mother. The teacher being an older woman, represented her mother. It's funny, the mother caused the problem and blamed it on the child. I bet there are more stories like this. Later in life she married men.

  • @monilaninetynine3811
    @monilaninetynine3811 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    Yes, babies feel that rejection. I'm sure it affected her for the rest of her life. Gladys became masculine presenting because of that. "You want a son? Here ya go!!"

  • @zoradaughter
    @zoradaughter ปีที่แล้ว +37

    I feel bad for Gladys. She was severely neglected as a kid. The very hurtful saying comes to mind, "Mothers raise their daughters and love their sons." I know this is true for some mothers. Sounds like it applies to Gladys, as well. I wonder what kind of person she would have become had she received the love she deserved. But I do believe that both McCarthism & religion forced her to change her tune. I think she was just scared. And I don't believe that she loved the men she married, she just felt like she had to marry them out of fear. They certainly didn't last long AT ALL. She lived in an frightening and oppressive time. Had she been living in these times, she probably would feel freer. *sigh*

    I believe from the beginning her mother had damaged her because her mother really wanted a boy. She wanted to be accepted so bad by her mother that she thought she was gay. She hated her brothers because of mother wanting only boys. She was actually very confused with her sexuality. She really wanted to be loved. Going through the estrogen shots really didn’t help. She needed some psychological counseling. I believe that the doctors needed to get to the root of her problems. This was a very sad story.

    • @CodyCole80
      @CodyCole80 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      And in time that lack of love from her mother and her mother treating her brothers better than her did a number of her psychologically where because she never received a mother's love, her mother wanting Gladys to be a boy, these issues started to affect her into puberty that made her attracted to women when the root of the attraction was the lack of motherly love and attention from her mother and also the feeling of being loved and appreciate by a woman that could hopefully fill that maternal void that Gladys never got from her mother. And status and attention because a thing for her because of how much attention her brothers were getting and men in general at that time.

    Her parents damaged their daughter emotionally I really blame her mother for that. When I had my first child I wanted a daughter but I had a beautiful baby boy and I loved him from the get go! I had my daughter several years later and I am very proud of both of them! A mother’s love is unconditional ❤❤.

    This was a great video, I never heard of Gladys Bentley before watching. Her early life was sad asf but when she was a teenager hitting it big in the speakeasies and basically the New York underworld was very interesting. Then in her “I became a woman again” era,I’m a little confused by it cause there’s so many theories to what made her change. The McCarthyism theory is extremely believable cause that was a time when they had to live in secret or lose everything they had and then the theory of her finding God so she changed due to that is very believable too, it’s hard to figure out what happened since we ain’t live in that time so reading about it and living during that time is hard to feel that climate

    I think people always try to downplay when a person decides they aren't attracted to the same thing anymore...Everybody cheers and claps if a person goes from the opposite sex to the same sex attractions (somehow that's an "accomplishment") but they always talk smack when a person goes from same sex to opposite sex attractions like somehow a person's prerogative to like what they want only applies if you're going from straight to gay. Why can't that same person change their mind if they want to without hassle?

    Ashley, thank you for introducing me to stars from days gone by who I knew nothing about. I'm very naive when it comes to the transgender community. I'd never seen any transsexuals (to my knowledge) until the early 80s when I lived in DC and I was flabbergasted. The male-to-female transsexuals were GORGEOUS.
    I believe Gladys wanting to be a male initially was due to being rejected or not being fully accepted by her mother. Wanting to be loved by your mother is universally a primal need. Gladys felt that if she were male, her mother would be more accepting of her

I hope she got it towards the end. But Ashley when you were imitating Gladys and you put those gifs of Queen Latifah as Cleo in there I laughed. 😂😂

    Happy Valentine's Day! I think she was telling the truth, when she said, she was trying to be a boy because of her mother's rejection. Even though, she came to that realization, it was not easy to just be a female, because it's ingrained in her, that her mother wants a boy. I think that is why she still had a struggle. Psychological hurt is very deep! That's just my opinion.🤷

    That is the first thought that came to mind , worth looking into the study of this, rejection of a child, post pregnancy and birth and denying that child based on their gender .I could imagine that it was a psychological effect on her but this is not in any way the case for people who are born in a healthy child birth and childhood growing up who were embrace. Sexuality is not psychological in my opinion but, I wonder if some people can be forced into preference sexuality based on how their parents reject or embrace them. And thank you Ashley for mentioning the lavender scare this is the term where lavender marriage is came where is well documented that a lot of the 1940s 1930s actors and actresses had fake marriages to the opposite sex called lavender marriages and you don't often hear that term but you reminded me of something I looked up through Wikipedia and it had a name for it which was hence lavender marriages.

    It's very obvious Gladys was a lesbian, there could be an argument that she was actually trans, but regardless she was not a heterosexual woman. Gladys sadly did what many homosexual and trans people did during that era, and that was to hide DEEP within that closet. Even as far as the late 60s, many performers and actors in Hollywood who were part of the LGBTQ community kept it a deep secret so their careers would not be derailed. In fact it got so bad in Hollywood that it was actually mandatory for studios to NEVER portray homosexual characters. Sure it could be "implied" but they never were called "Gay". However many directors and screenplay writers decided to work around this rule by using queer undertones that only queer people could understand, this practice was called Queer Coding. The LGBTQ community has a deep rich history that is often ignored because of the social climate we exist in. But stories like Gladys Bentley should always be shared and discussed, because it gives a clear view into the culture that America existed in, and how many queer people who worked in Hollywood had to move in it. We can not learn from our mistakes without understanding the history that led to those mistakes. And that's not even getting into the politics of also being a queer POC either.

Her mother never could love her,because she only wanted sons. This was a very sad traumatic story. Gladys Bentley grow up and became boy. I believe at first she was searching for a mother's love something she wasn't receiving at home. As an young adult realize she was a lesbian. She left home to live her best life. Gladys Bentley became a famous lesbian entertainer of her time. I hope she found some happiness. Gladys Bentley never had love and acceptance as a child.
