She also stood up for black performers Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington when Hollywood producers balked at having them in her movie. New York was more integrated than Los Angeles so at first she didn't understand why the producers didn't want to cast them. She vouched for them and their appearance in the film boosted their careers.
Similar to how Marilyn Monroe supported Ella Fitzgerald being hired to appear at the Macambo (I think) nightclub. She told the owner if he booked Ella, she'd be at every show and he could advertise that. He did, Marilyn was at a front table for every performance, people came to see Marilyn, heard Ella sing, and Ella's career took off!

I think she thought if it was THAT out in the open, as it started to be in the early 1970s with gay liberation, that it was like promoting it in society and would have an undue influence that could in our society hurt children and the family... Because i think even though she accepted gay people, there was still the idea that it wasn't a GREAT thing and that there shouldnt' be an actual shift in society... I can see why someone of her era (I mean, the woman came of age in the 10's!) could believe that, while at the same time saying gays and lesbians should not be censured and should be appreciated for themselves, their talents and contributions, but that those who happened to be gay or lesbian should keep their sex lives more on the private side... She exaggerated her swinging hips etc, acting like a brazen hooker. She was once jailed for obscenity & later said "I love censorship, it has made me rich". As her films were heavily censored she added more risque material so less of the original was removed. Her last film bombed, it was a dreadful adaptation of Gore Vidal's bizarre novel Myra Breckinridge & despite the star studded cast bombed; Raquel Welsh played the ambitious transgender actress & West her ruthless agent. Mae was old & was put on a trolley to move, she couldn't remember her lines so was fed them through a radio ear piece. The trouble was that it was on the same frequency as a cab company & she would often repeat their directions. I like this absurdity to the end of her film career, it is more interesting than Dietrich's dull finale a few years later with Bowie in Just A Gigolo which was received badly by critics & audience. West was not a man, she copied drag queens.
She was in another ridiculous movie after that one where they also wheeled her around on a trolley I believe. I've seen it and it was really bad. It was called Sextette and in 1978 was her last film.

She could have had a thyroid problem which can give the appearance of an Adam's apple in females. I believe that the more traditional women started these rumors about her because she looked different from them but could still pull all their men and that had them pissed. I've seen it before. Some women who other women don't consider attractive have that thing that men like, whatever that is, and guys are just drawn to them.

My grandmother was like that. She always had a man trailing around after her even though she really wasn't that attractive. She had a thing for married men and could get them. Go figure. I worked for Santa Monica Bank in the late 60s and had the pleasure of meeting Miss Mae West when her chauffeur would pull up out front and park in the red zone and make deposits for her and one day we needed her signature and I was taken to the car and told to climb in and get her signature, trust me she was not a man and was one of the sweetest ladies I've ever had the pleasure of meeting and from that day on she called and told me to come to the car and personally retrieve the deposit and appreciated the personal service.
I was only 24 and a recent corporate officer at this bank and every other officer in the bank was jealous as hell.

If you didn't actually witness the birth, then you don't really know. We don't really know anything about these "stars", except the created backstories and narratives we are fed by media machines. They are all owned, controlled, and part of the agendas. No one reaches high-level fame unless they are owned by the entertainment industry, and none of their lives are what they portray or what we are told. They are all fictional characters playing roles, on stage and off stage. You may not want to believe the tales, but don't believe any of the mainstream narratives either.

@@crankledloner3383 Ì think you need to check your biology, I've had a hysterectomy and I haven't gone through menopause because I've kept my ovaries. When you have a "complete hysterectomy they take the uterus and ovaries and you go through menopause which leaves you without the main producers of your female hormones. Your fat still makes some though.

I think it is important to note that she started, and lived, much of her life in very different times. In some ways she belonged more to our contemporary world than she did in her earlier life. She was clearly ahead of her time. She was gorgeous and talented and very mindful of the expectations of her fans. Back in the day, many of us would not leave the house without makeup, coifed hair, or a nice outfit. I still do.

Some women do have signs of hair growth on the face. My friend did which she got from her mother and auntie who seemed to have a little more male hormones. I myself have been growing a few chin hair but in my case I think its just because I am in the early stages of menopause. Does it really matter what we all look like. I really would be surprised if Mae West was a man. I remember her movies, I’ve also critically looked at every photo you showed & saw no sign of an Adam’s apple. I am so glad I found your channel yesterday. It’s fucking gold man. This is the exact type of thing I’ve been wanting to listen to after months of feeling so bored and tired of everything else I listened to.
I always got the impression of Mae West that she pretended to be a man pretending to be a woman. That was the role she played.
There's no way that Mae was a man. She was too voluptuous. She has a pinched waist, broad hips and plenty of bossom. Now, you might say that those were falsies, but if they were, they're the most realistic falsies ever. I think that the rumor she was a man comes from the fact that Mae was way-ahead-of-her-time: she used to love gay people and hand around drag queens. By the way, she, also, had a black boyfriend. People don't talk about that much, but its true. Now that's really being super liberated considering that back in the day, a black man couldn't even whistle at a white woman.
Mae was an amazing woman who wrote, performed her songs as well as her scripts. She was a true pioneer in Hollywood for women. She was a strong woman - celebrate that - so why do people have to say she's a male?
I don't believe that her brother ever played her. People have tried to say the same about Martha Jane Canary (aka Calamity Jane) and it wasn't true (males do not give birth and Martha had a daughter and she was madly in love with Wild Bill Hickcock). It was wondered over because Calamity wore dresses but she also would wear men's garb as well).
Mae walked the way she did because she was very short - 5' or under I believe and she wore very high platform shoes but was afraid of falling off them so she trod carefully which gave her that "rolling hips" walk.
She despised W.C. Fields and made comments about him being nothing but a drunkard. He was so bad with his drinking that when the studio tried to get him to stop drinking on set, he would inject his oranges with liquor -- and he got away with it for a while. She gave Cary Grant his start (Why don't you come up sometime and see me?)
She did her last film at the age of 86 or 87 (I forget which) and the film was one of hers - Sextette.
The U.S. Navy referred to the life jackets that were worn at sea as "Mae Wests" for obvious reasons.
Mae was very smart and business savvy (as was Marilyn Monroe) who some people still believe was just a "dumb blonde". That was just a character that she played because people expected it - both were believed to be "all beauty and no brains" - except by the people who really knew them.
If a child decides to sleep with somebody and they Proclaim themselves a liberated young woman that's one thing but the men men who sleep with her should know better.

I’ve always loved May West and her maid shadow. Not to mention Her with Cary Grant, and we fields. We’re they ideal stars for a black child as good as we got. She was empowering,witty,and unapologetic. Not bad role model for independent women.

I don’t think Mae West was a man at all. There is a man her former assistant who was able to save much of her clothes and personal things after her death . Some he used his retirement to buys things of hers that came up on auction s. He was going to open a museum,got a building I think ,but in the end something happened,perhaps his own health but resented a few of her things have started to be sold.
He did show many of her items on a few videos on TH-cam, Jordan the lions channel.” Mae West” from seeing her hand made under garments,you can see she was a woman. Also if you look at her body changes throughout the years ,the fat distribution is female not male. She may have had a medical condition that gave her extra testosterone,many women have dark facial hair and if she shaved instead of bleaching the peach fuzz after 70 years it would come in like a man’s 5 o’clock shadow. She was so super tiny with tiny her shoes had to be specially made.
I am going to call bs on her brother taking over in the end because there would be a size difference she had perhaps a medical condition with too much T that came long after puberty , her female features outweigh the big hand’s & facial hair. The rough gal was her persona & in person at home she was sweet as pie say those who worked with her.
Her pictures were very different- sometimes she looks very pretty and feminine and other times she looks odd and masculine - I have always thought this was weird

Despite not being a conventional beauty Mae doesn't look typically male. I wonder if the rumors were fueled because she was a starlet that wasn't conventionally feminine in both looks and personality and this seems very sexist to me. This reminds me how all the transphobia that's happening right now has actually caused a lot of cis women who aren't conventionally feminine (like athletic women and butch lesbians) to be harassed in women's bathrooms. Also, some famous women or socialites didn't like to be seen without makeup like one of Capote's swans who's name I don't recall and of course Dolly Parton.
