May God Bless you Lou! I pray your Museum remains for many years to come, and serves as a Historical destination for everyone to see how beautifully crafted so many of these statues and religious articles were, and are! Especially for those persons who attended the Catholic Churches that are now closed within your range of statues. I will pray for you and also donate to your cause.

Hi Lou, I was wondering if you have found that some of the colors of the statuary are connected to biblical scripture or if some of the colors are more about the era they were originally created in? I ask because I have restored a few Catholic altar & niche statues and I am in the midst of restoring several right now. It seems the hands take the worst abuse but oh the many nicks, gouges, and missing chunks of plaster!
I restored a Sacred Heart Christ that originally had a coral colored cloak but the priest who owned it preferred a rich red cloak.
Right now, I'm working on a Madonna and I'm wondering about her aqua cloak. It's full of gouges, so it must be repainted. Many Medieval paintings use lapis luzuli (blue) for her cloak. I'm torn between restoring it to the factory aqua, or the lapis luzuli. However, the luzuli seems garish. The aqua was soft & lovely - your thoughts?
Also, I feel that the original paint was likely oil paint, but I have a friend who also restores; he uses acrylic. If acrylic is not to go over the top of oil, how can this work? I trust him but I worry about future paint flaking.
I would also like to refer Ms. Smith to the 'Iconoclastic Controversy.' This issue was hashed out centuries ago; Christ was a physical man, as well as spiritual. No one worships the actual statues. Most faiths have a history of depicting the physical and the spiritual; yes, even early Judaism and Islam (see Dura-Europos and the Mughal Empire, and contemporary Jewish works) I'm sure if you take a Theology class, Art History, or even Art Appreciation, the issue of "idoltry" would likely be academically covered, but alas, I, too, tend to be concerned with the plank in my own eye rather than deal with criticisms of other religions . . . as long as they don't preach hate!

@@jonathanmacias2911 have you forgotten that god in the Old Testament personally went down to earth to speak with Moses because his spirit was not send yet. When god came to earth he throned on the cherubs of the covenant - likewise in heaven god throned on cherubs. The Jews didn’t bow for the cherubs no they bowed for the person who was throned on them.
