  • This might be one of the coolest things I've done. In today's video, we're touring St. John Cantius Catholic Church in Chicago, IL. It's an absolutely beautiful church, and Fr. Joshua Caswell shares with us the history of the church as well as the deep meaning imbedded in the design. I learned so much throughout this tour, and whether you're Catholic or not, I think you'll love seeing this incredible church and hearing Fr. Joshua's infectious love for Cantius. If you love architecture, churches, theology, or history, you'll devour this video. From relics of martyrs to icons with versace necklaces, Cantius has it all. This truly is one of the most beautiful Catholic churches in America. The best part is, everything has intention. The theology of the church is engraved in the floor... literally. You'll just have to see. Get ready to fall in love with St. John Cantius in Chicago, IL and learn more than you ever thought there was to know about the inside of a Catholic Church.

The Catholic Church is the only one established by God Himself with His apostles. He set His Doctrine and Sacraments in His Church. He taught if you do not remain in His Doctrine or do not receive His Sacraments, you do NOT HAVE GOD. Mt 16:18-19, Eph 2:19-22, 1 Cor 12:28, 11:23-29, Jn 3:5, 6:51-59, 20:21-23, 2 Cor 5:18-19, 2 Jn 1:9, Heb 13:9, Gal 1:6-9 are a few verses

So I Raised my (now adult) children as Pentecostal, we attended word of Faith , then United Pentecostal. My son Silas, now 38, converted this Easter. He took a journey of 3 years studying and made the move. His studies brought me studies and I am in the process now. I am exuberant and feel as I have finally found “my Tribe”. My purpose. @@violetaster3798 Wow, what an incredible story! Thank you so much for sharing! My husband and I were raised in the Assemblies of God church. We met there and started dating in high school then married there. Shortly before our first baby was born we moved away when my husband went on active duty. Around that time we started reading 1 Co 14 more thoroughly and realized that many of our beliefs went against that chapter. A decade of searching from denomination to denomination led to sitting in our non-denom church where I angrily told God that it wasn't right that He would promise to lead us into all truth but make it impossible to find. Shortly after that he answered my angry prayer and introduced us to Catholicism through an invitation by a new friend to a Catholic Bible Study after our move to our new duty station. I decided to give the study a try but wanted to find out what Catholics believed first so I started with Rome Sweet Home by Scott Hahn. At the same time the Holy Spirit was surrounding us with faithful Catholics. I did NOT want to become a Catholic, but the Truth of it knocked me upside my head and I couldn't NOT become Catholic. I am so incredibly excited with you and can't wait to 'see you in the Eucharist' when you officially come home!!! What an incredible day that will be, especially after your son making the swim across the Tiber. You two should write a book! God bless you!!!

On account of this I’m publishing a weekly TH-cam video on episodes from the life of Don Bosco, entitled ST JOHN BOSCO by JOE ZAMMIT. In this series I’m narrating events and miracles from the splendid life of Don Bosco. St John Bosco used to perform a miracle almost every day, through the intercession of Mary Help of Christians. You should see our protestant abbeys, cathedrals, and churches in UK. It's amazing. Best of all no pope so far away in Rome to control it. Only god and its local people as it should be. The Pope is even wanting Catholic gifts to the local church to go to Rome rather than our local churches and cathedrals. I really want to understand why Catholics allow this crime to happen? why allow your golden pope who has plenty of gold. To steal what people donated to their local church? isn't that stealing?

It's just me here alone in my home, but when the priest said that, I raised my right hand to toward heaven and yelled, "YES!!!" I so so so agree! I'm still early in my journey into Catholicism, but I have already seen both the historical churches and the modern, "Pizza Hut" type. There is NO comparison! Who wouldn't want to worship God in such an inspiring, beautiful place?
The modern buildings look little different from the Church of Christ buildings I've spent my life in -- plain, banal, weakly inspired and uninspiring inside and out. When I started attending Mass in my parish (it's a historical church building), I was instantly STRUCK by its beauty, and it was not lost to me how the experience engaged all the senses, pointing to Him who is higher than all things. Everything combines to DRAW you into worship. And it works!
I sincerely hope that the Church has learned from its architectural mistakes and goes forward embracing the more traditional spaces when it builds its new buildings. Let's have EVERYTHING working together toward the inspiration and salvation of souls!

      Your “anger” is dismissive.
Is it true or untrue that this is a function of churches? Until recently, Jews, Christians and Muslims (I’m sure other religions as well) understood that to be a function of their church buildings: to essentially assist, heighten, and guide the senses of the viewer/ church member to the transcendent.
We can support that mission AND condemn using the “blood of the innocents” to obtain the objective.

When I was converting I found out my husband had been raised Catholic by his Polish mother. My conversion led him back to the Faith just in time before his death. The True Ancient Catholic Faith is amazing and so deep in meaning. Do not judge the faith by some of the modernist almost secular Parishes you see these days. St. John Cantius is more what the church has been like for thousands of years.

@Kile Coming from my background I was very critical of the Catholic Church. I did not want to convert to the church. One It was Going to cause problems with Me and my Family. The simple matter is I was convinced intellectually. But emotionally and spiritually as very conflicted. I knew it intellectually made sense and was most likely true. But my heart didn't want to come along because it knew the consequences with my family and with my way of thinking. Spiritually I don't wanna come along because I was raised in a very anti-Catholic tradition and I was afraid as being fooled. But when I kneeled down and lit a candle something I would never do before that moment. I said a prayer and left that church in complete peace. 2 years of struggle and one prayer all that struggle goes to peace in a matter of seconds. Of course the holy scriptures and you are right. Beauty can be used by satan and we can often think highly of our own beauty. Whether that be our car our clothes or a building. But it is fairly simple and Exodus and Leviticus And later on when God gives instructions for the temple. We see that God values beauty expressed in architecture and art. Of course if this beauty comes in the place of God it's not good. But when the beauty is there to point to the Lord and draw one's heart to heaven not only is a good it's Godly. Growing up in the tradition I grew up in Plain white walls were common. One day I asked my grandfather; how come some churches have art, some churches don't, some churches have little. He told me we don't need it because we have the beauty of God's word and that's enough. In a sense that's true. Knowing Gods scriptures is way more important than having a painting. But what if you can't read. Then that painting can become your knowledge of the scriptures. God does not forbid beauty. On the contrary God is everything good and everything that is good comes from God. Therefore wisdom and beauty side-by-side makes perfect sense. My replies to my grandfather would be this, Although you are correct knowledge of scripture is in s important. It's not the only thing that we should be concerned about. We all know this deep down. What if your girlfriend or wife came to you looking like she just woke up on your anniversary. She took no time to care for her appearance and came to this fancy restaurant with bed head and pyjamas. Sure you love her and you both have knowledge of eachother. But there's something to be said with taking time and making sure there's beauty involved.

@@elizabethf794 You can do alot with what God gives you! All Catholic Churches are still built on the same underlying principles. My Church was built in late 50's but it still follows the temple plan, has a narthex / vestibule, nave, sanctuary, font, altar, stations of the cross, relics... Not to mention all all the smaller elements (seasonal liturgical banners, chalices, thuribles, etc). We did something like this at a summer Bible School when I was young but I barely remember it. I've recently become more interested in it by watching Catholic vloggers. A tour makes for great catechesis and is sorely needed. Today if you say to any casual Catholic, "Meet me in the Narthex" they'll look at you like you're crazy! Lol.

@Denise Bond that's because most of them were Catholic Churches if they were built before 1500. Your history is built on Catholic tradition. Bishops, Priests and Parishes, are a Catholic organizational method. Christmas, Easter, all Catholic traditions. Those in the UK have amnesia about Church history because of Protestant propaganda since the Tudors. They know almost nothing of the more than 1,000 years of Christianity in the British Isles. Very sad.

@Denise Bond I am also an English Catholic and I am referring to ordinary Brits who are secular or nominally Anglican and have picked up bizarre notions of British history because they are taught very little about Catholicism and it's presence on our Islands for 1,000 years before Henry VIII cut the branch from the vine. They just don't appreciate that Charing Cross, Blackfrairs, Ladywell for example all refer to Catholic history. I know because I was an atheist who converted 33 yrs ago and to this day people say the most ridiculous things to me about Catholicism and British history.

Those of us who would like to see this young man find his way to the Catholic Church need to remember that he must be led by the Holy Spirit, and not by our comments and wishes. After all, in the Our Father we pray "thy will be done...", not "my" will. A person also should not become Catholic just because of the beauty of a church. This, along with the "bells and the smells" are fringe benefits of being Catholic. We must all pray for him, that is the best we can do for him! I don't know if others have suggested this, but "Rome Sweet Home" by Dr. Scott Hahn and his wife Kimberly Hahn could be useful to him.

The Holy Ghost often works through the faithful in the plan of salvation, so perhaps the Holy Ghost is using their comments and well wishes as an encouragement to conversion. The prophets were able to prophesy through the gifts of the Holy Ghost. According to your thinking, the Holy Ghost was wrong to use this means because the people should not have been "led by comments" from the prophets. The Holy Ghost should have given the gift of prophesy to every single individual directly so they would not be influenced by the "will" of the prophets.
We are all tasked with encouraging others to the faith through teaching, example and prayer.

Not all Catholic Churches go to the extent in adorning the interior. Fr Joshua belongs to a religious order that is dedicated to restoring some of the majesty and beauty of catholic life. I can see Fr Joshua is fired up in his presentation. Also, what’s missing in explaining catholic and orthodox churches is the idea of the “communion of saints”, that is that christians are members in a spiritual union of christians both living and dead. Christian believers in christ are all part of a single mystical body of christ. All living and dead christians (from christian beginnings) share in the good of each other. This accounts for the relics and paintings, statues seen of christians in past centuries. They all combine with each catholic (or christian) in prayer and sustenance.

Not all Catholic churches have the financial possibilities. Some of the. Most. Beautiful churches were taken and became protestant after Luther.s reformation in Europe. . In England the same thing happened. The ornaments were taken out because they are idolatry according to them . The beauty of the architecture is still present .

    • @beautifulspirit7420

@@ilonkastille2993 yes it was very said. Hundreds of monasteries and abbies were destroyed and all the states of Our Lady, such as Our Lady of Walsingham were brought to London and burned in a huge pyre. History Professor Eamonn Duffy used the historical records in England to show how ordinary people were forced to change the interior and liturgy in his book "Stripping of the Altars".
      en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stripping_of_the_Altars
The people were fined and their livelihoods ruined if they did not attend the new services. That's why mostly only a very few aristocratic families were able to keep the faith for hundreds of years as they had the money to pay the fines and also build private Catholic chapels. Virtually every ecclesiastical building in England built before 1500 was originally Catholic. Henry VIII had a devotion to Our Lady and went on pilgrimage to Walsingham. He wrote theological treatises supporting the Pope and was given the title "Defender of the Faith". Its so sad to see how little people in the UK know about the historic faith that surrounds them. I know, because I was one of them. I had absolutely no comprehension of how England had been Catholic for a thousand years before Henry broke from the Church and how that had created our culture.

Dan thanks for your kind words. If I may ask, why did you leave the Catholic Church? I realize it is a very personal question. I think it is important to understand the why. I think it is sad for those who leave but at same time we shouldn't judge people on this but at same time reveal the truths of the Catholic Church and pray and hope like the prodigal son that Jesus and the people of the Church would welcome you or anyone else back with open arms. I have read a lot and sadly it seems a lot of folks leave the Catholic Church because of their own lack of understanding of the Church poor catechism, not knowing the real history if the Church and yes sometimes bad shepherds and scandal in the Church.....Jesus never promised that the Church would be perfect as Judas was with Jesus at the Last Supper....but He established a Church....and I am sorry to say a lot of misinformation about the dogma and unchangeable teaching of the Church persists because of ignorance and often times an anti catholic bias by many historians and other protestant denominations...some of it may be deliberate and some and a lot due to folks who dont want to have real civil discussion and open minds. I pray we all are united in the fullness of truth ....the Eucharist is the highest form of having an intimate relationship with Jesus. I will pray for you and ask you to consider reading about the Early Church Fathers and see how their beliefs were Catholic from the start. You may disagree now...but wonder what could change your mind.

The joy that I have felt, from my conversion has never left me . because it is the true church , that Christ started, The one Holy Catholic and apostolic church. According to the nicene creed. This church is so beautiful, but one day I brought a Protestant friend of mine to a very small, church here in Canada. And as I pushed her (she is unable to walk) into this small church I heard her gasp , I believe she felt the actual presence of our Lord in the Tabernacle. Which we never felt in our Baptist hall . Because the body of Christ is not there.

@@GospelSimplicity Matt Fradd is not a very good source for the traditionalism of the Catholic Church. He is also rough around the edges. I am not a fan of him. I am a very traditional Catholic and so are a great majority of the parishioners at St. John Cantius.
By the way, this is my parish! I've been going to this church for the past 12 years. I love the church but mostly, I love all the Canons. Those are the priests and brothers that reside there and serve in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Thank you so much Austin for this video. God bless you. I am praying for your conversion to the Catholic faith. In God's time... all in God's time.

@@GospelSimplicity Matt Fradd is very nice, I live in the same city as he does. He attends a Byzantine Rite (aka Eastern Rite) church, and in this video you just did, this is what you would call a Latin Rite (aka Western Rite) church. So many Catholics are leaving their Novus Ordo Mass churches and returning to the traditional Latin Mass churches like St. John Cantius or, like Matt Fradd, Eastern Rite liturgy churches (ones that are united to the Chair of Peter.) We are all on the journey of seeking the Fullness of Truth. God bless you and thank you for this beautiful video!!

Saints are not dead. There was Elijah and Moses talking to Jesus. Hebrews says we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses. If we can ask people to pray for us, why can't we do the same with Saints who are up there in heaven, not bound by any eartly limits, adoring and praising before God, who while they were alive showed us the unique expression of Jesus in their lives.

To be honest I’m only really a Baptist because my family has been that way for as long as we can trace back (1856) Mississippi but I’ve always been so amazed by the dedication that Catholics put into their churches. (Mines is one of the typical Deep South church houses) but my God this is breathtaking. Maybe once I learn more about Catholicism I’ll convert because this is beautiful
